"Self-portrait of Hogarth painting the Comic Muse, after the painting in the National Portrait Gallery; the artist is seated looking to right, wearing an indoor cap and a loose coat, he holds a palette, brushes and palette knife while a pot of oil is on the floor beside the chair; in a niche in the wall behind the easel is a volume of prints and a burin; leaning against the leg of the easel, a copy of the "Analysis of Beauty" and the accompanying print, Plate I (Paulson 195)."--British Museum online catalogue

Title, state, publisher, and date from Paulson.
After the painting in the National Portrait Gallery.
State with "Serjeant painter to His Majesty" in caption below image heavily scored through. 'Comedy' inscribed on the Muse's book is partially excised. The face of Comedy and mask are now outlined in black as well as white. 'Comedy 1764' is engraved on the pillar in the painting. See Paulson for other changes to the plate.

- George Steevens bequeathed this collection to William Windham (1750-1810). At Windham's death, the collection was put up for sale on 20 July 1810 and was bought in by Mrs. Windham at 292 guineas; by descent through the Windham family; Sotheby's, 17 February 1919 to Dyson Perrins for £400; Sotheby's sale including Property of the Late C.W. Dyson Perrins, Esq., 11 June 1959, lot 100 purchased by Maggs Bros. for W.S. Lewis for £1300.
