A portrait of Thomas Morell, a classical scholar and friend of Hogarth's, shown "in the character of a Cynic Philosopher"; behind him, an organ aprtially hidden behind a curtain; in front of him on a table is an ink well, brush, and a pile of books; he sits at the table, pen in hand poised above a sheet of paper. On the wall near the door hangs a watch on a ribbon; over it a coat of arms

Final state was used as the frontispiece to Morell's Thesaurus Graecae Poeses ... Eton : Joseph Pote ; London : T. Pote in Fleet Street, 1762.

- George Steevens bequeathed this collection to William Windham (1750-1810). At Windham's death, the collection was put up for sale on 20 July 1810 and was bought in by Mrs. Windham at 292 guineas; by descent through the Windham family; Sotheby's, 17 February 1919 to Dyson Perrins for £400; Sotheby's sale including Property of the Late C.W. Dyson Perrins, Esq., 11 June 1959, lot 100 purchased by Maggs Bros. for W.S. Lewis for £1300.
