Subjects include his planned itineraries; travel expenses; his elaborate entertainment by Veli Pasha; impressions of and experiences with Lord Byron and Lady Hester Stanhope; his shipment of "vases and other treasures" home to Ireland from digs in Greece; and his dislike of Constantinople. Other comments concern remittances from home and his thoughts on better estate managementThere are also four letters and letters copy between the dowager Lady Sligo and her husband's creditorsHowe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo (1788-1845) was educated at Eton and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he befriended Lord Byron. After succeeding to his father's title in 1809, in 1810-11 he toured the Mediterranean and the Levant, sending home over 1,000 archaelogical specimens from Morea and the Greek lslands. He was arrested on his return to Malta for "abducting" two Navy deserters who had captained his hired ship and later served four months in Newgate upon his conviction. In 1834-35 Sligo was Governor General of Jamaica and vigorously enforced the British decrees on the emancipation of slaves, later publishing "Jamaica under the Apprentice System, by a Proprietor" (1836).
