Illuminated manuscript on parchment, in unidentified hand, containing a collection of letters, attributed to Hippocrates (ff. 1r-50v). Also includes a series of epitaphs (ff. 51r-53v); incipit: Caesari sacrum Ennius Montanus fecit auxit. Concludes with a collection of pseudo-classical letters of unknown Renaissance authorship (ff. 54r-72v): correspondence between Marius Appius and Latianus (2 letters, 54r-55r), letters by and to Curtius Rufus (22 letters, ff. 56r-73v), and a letter by Genutius to the Roman senate (1 letter, ff. 73r-74r). Leaves 50, 73-77 are blank

Title assigned by cataloger.
Script: humanist minuscule.
Decoration: historiated gold initial showing king seated on a throne (Ataxerxes?), with sword and orb in hand, and full border decoration including animals, puti, and human figures (f. 1r); five-line gold initial on blue frame (f. 25r); 2-line gold initials on purple and blue frames; gold capital letters. Rubrication.
Layout: 1 column of 15 lines.
Binding: old burgundy velvet over parchment.
Foliation added in modern pencil. - Provenance
- Unidentified armorial stamp on front flyleaf. Nineteenth-century French ownership notes (f. 78r): Ce reueil antique et precieux vient de la Bibliotheque du Vatican de Rome que mr. De Parcieux luy meme aporta en France en 1740. Followed by another note, in a different hand: M. l'abbe Nive bibiotecaire de Mme Louise de France pretend que lecriture est de 15me siecle. Formerly owned by Sir Thomas Phillipps, MS 197 and a22.652. Purchased by E. P. Goldsmith in the Phillipp's sale, Sotheby's, 24 June 1935, lot no. 182. Acquired by Dr. Cushing from E. P. Goldsmith & Co. (London). Accompanied by correspondence from E. P. Goldsmith, describing the manuscript. Armorial bookplate of Dr. Harvey Cushing on inside front cover. His bequest to Yale Medical School Library.
