A mahogany case, lined with a dark red velvet, and containing amputation and trepanning instruments, of which include forceps, gouges, several saws (Hey's, capital, and chain), a trephine and trephine brush, scalpels, a spiral tourniquet, knives, and an osteotome. An inscription on top of the box reads 'Dr. W. G. Alling. Presented by friends and patients at the State Hospital, New Haven, Conn. Dec. 22nd, 1869'. Dr. Alling was the House Physician of the General Hospital
