The first volume, labeled "Rough Notes," consists of jottings made in the course of the journey.  The second volume, labeled "Journal," is a consecutive narrative compiled from the notes.  In addition to describing notable churches, palaces, statues, and museums, the writer also describes the weather; costumes of the inhabitants; carriages and horses; roads and scenery; and the hotels and inns where she stays; and often compares these items and practices to their British counterparts.  She mentions the brickwork and houses at Rotterdam; singers and acrobats who beg for money in Holstein; and Upsala's museum of natural history; as well as describes and criticizes Sweden's system of government and complains about customs examinations throughout.
