Print signed 'Corbutt', which was a pseudonym used by the mezzotint engraver Richard Purcell. However, Purcell's generally accepted date of death occurred twelve years prior to the publication of this print, prompting Chaloner Smith to list it under "Engraver not ascertained." For a note about this decision, see: Smith, J.C. British mezzotinto portraits, v. 3, page 1018.
"One of a series of portraits of officers in the American War; artist and publisher may be fictitious"--Note in local card catalog record, Lewis Walpole Library.
