Abstract: George IV, wearing a coat and top hat, punches a plainly dressed Caroline in the face on a dirt street in front of buildings; blood gushes from her nose as she falls backwards from the blow. Lady Conyngham, elegantly dressed, stands behind the King and converses with a soldier on the left edge of the design. Another man, dressed as royalty in a fur-lined cape, stands in a doorway on the right, angrily pointing and yelling at a woman; a sign posted next to the doorway advertises "The Life of King Henry VIII." A dog runs in the foreground on the right, its collar reading "John Bull."
Description: Title etched below image.
Print signed twice; "Marks fect." is etched within bottom center portion of image, and "Marks" is etched beneath lower right corner of image.
Sheet trimmed within plate mark.
Not in the Catalogue of prints and drawings in the British Museum.
Watermark (mostly trimmed).
Mounted to 58 x 39 cm.
Mounted (with one other print) on leaf 62 in volume 1 of the W.E. Gladstone collection of caricatures and broadsides surrounding the "Queen Caroline Affair."
Figures of "Lady Conyngham," "George IV," and "Caroline" identified in pencil at bottom of sheet; a mostly illegible note, with the date "1820" at the end, is written in pencil in lower right.
Provenance: Sold by London's Dulau and Company to the New York City bookseller Ernest R. Gee in 1928. Earlier ownership by W.E. Gladstone is suggested by a manuscript note from Dulau formerly laid into the front the first volume (now in the object file), which states that "These came from the Gladstone Library at Court Hey, Broad Green. The manuscript notes written below the caricatures are in the handwriting of W.E. Gladstone." William Reese Company; February 2024.
