With his right hand he extends a pair of tongs into the fire, at the end of which is a document entitled "For the Times". On the floor behind him is a large pile of similar documents, several with visible titles including "for the Penny Mag-" and "on the education of monkeys". The room is cluttered with natural history specimens (skulls and mounted skeletons), as well as with scientific instruments and aids (including a globe and a telescope). Bookcases full of books line the back wall; additional books are piled upon a table at left.
