After her engagement to a nobleman, young Arthur Cairns, Lord Garmoyle, she left the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. However, her fiancé Cairns broke off the engagement, prompting Fortescue to return to the stage. She received £10,000 from Cairns as a result of the breach of promise lawsuit.
