"Fox stands on a dais at the head of a rough table, the seat from which he has risen is magnificent, above it is the inscription 'Vive la Libertè' surmounted by a bonnet-rouge. He is held up (left) by Combe, the Lord Mayor, a pompous figure in gown and chain, and (right) by Erskine. The former holds a 'Petition to ye Throne; - or a new way to Combe the Ministers Wig'; the latter grasps a bottle of 'Brand[y]'. Fox is melancholy, and his swollen legs cannot support unaided his vast bulk. Before him is a frothing pot of 'Whitbread's Entire' (cf. BMSat 8638). Only the guests on Fox's right and left are visible; they are Grey (or perhaps Byng), [Incorrectly identified in Wright and Evans as Sir J. Sinclair. Identifications of Grey by Lord Holland appear conclusive, but he is identified in 'London und Paris' as Byng, M.P. for Middlesex, and he resembles the Byng of BMSat 8782.] turning to watch his chief, and Tierney, looking gloomily before him. Behind Tierney are the heads of a butcher, with marrow-bone and cleaver, and a chimney-sweep with brush and shovel. All listen intently to Fox, who says: "Gentlemen, you see I'm grown quite an Old Man in your Service! "A lumbering wagon drawn (l. to r.) by eight asses is stuck fast, up to the axles in water; the asses strain hard to drag it up a steep slope to dry land. Its dilapidated tilt is much patched and is labelled 'British State Waggon 1804'. The wagoner, Addington (r.), kneels on an adjacent bank, and shouts to a fat and jovial John Bull, dressed as a volunteer, who stands on the opposite bank of the deeply sunken lane, his bulldog beside him. Addington wears a smock, but his powdered hair is in a black bag. He holds his long whip and his hat in his right. hand, and extends his left. arm, shouting, " - help, Johnny Bull! - help! - my Waggon's stuck fast in the Slough! - help! help." John, who holds his bayoneted musket, looks down at Addington, pointing behind him with outflung r. arm at thirteen horses with human heads above and behind him on rising ground. He answers: " - stuck fast in the Slough! - ay to be sure! - why dost'nt put better Cattle to thy Wain? - look at them there Horses doing o' nothing at all! - what ether they matches in Colour, if they do but drag the Waggon out o' the Mud! - don't ye see how the very thoughts o' being put into Harness makes 'em all love and nubble one another?" The horses, [The identifications (most being self-evident) are those of Miss Banks, the alternatives in brackets being those of E. Hawkins. Wright and Evans arrange them differently and omit Spencer and Lansdowne.] though close together, are in groups. On the extreme left., and rather behind the others, Lord Spencer (or Carlisle) rubs noses with Carlisle (or Lauderdale), Erskine (in wig and bands) with Wilberforce. In front of this group the bulky Lansdowne (or Norfolk) lies on the ground, asleep, his back to the others. Next, Grey turns his head towards the haughty Buckingham, who wears spectacles and a Garter ribbon. Their backs are turned to the main group of four: Fox, with a foreleg placed on Grenville's shoulder looks up affectionately at the latter, who responds with a complacent smile. Pitt watches the pair with haughty benignity; Canning, behind, watches them intently. On the extreme right. Sheridan (a plump piebald), scowling fiercely, kicks up his heels at Windham, who retorts with a blast of excrement, his head turned towards Fox and Grenville. In the foreground (l.) is the stage-wagon (the slowest form of transit), drawn by its eight undifferentiated asses. The tilt is open at the back, showing it crammed with bundles, &c. The centre-piece is a bulging sack: 'Budget for 1804', from which project papers inscribed 'Taxes'. A treasure-chest is inscribed 'Treasury'; coins pour from a hole in its side. It is flanked by two bundles: 'Secret Service Money' and 'Family Pickings'. A bundle of 'Pensions' consists of bulky papers inscribed 'Sinecure'. Large volumes tied together are 'New Acts of Parliament'. Other papers are 'Defence against Invasion'; 'State of Ireland'; 'East Indies'. "Napoleon presides at a feast with Josephine seated on his left. A sumptuous dessert is on the table, with dishes moulded to represent English buildings, &c. Napoleon has begun to devour 'St James's', but has dropped his fork, and looks round in horror at the words 'Mene Mene, Tekel, Upharsin' (l.) at which the arm of Jehovah points. This emerges from clouds, the other arm holds over the head of Napoleon a pair of scales; one, inscribed 'Vive le Roi', contains a crown and outweighs the other, 'Despotism', which flies in the air, spilling the contents, shackles and a bonnet rouge. The room is lined with grenadiers at attention, with drawn sabres and pistols in their belts; they are partly obscured by clouds, but their eyes are turned to the writing on the wall. This is also seen by three grenadiers who stand rigidly behind Napoleon's chair, their sabres dripping blood, their eyes turned to the left. Of those at the feast only Napoleon has seen the message, but the general on his right. looks with alarm at his master who has overturned three bottles of wine. The others are absorbed in food or women. Josephine, grossly fat, drinks avidly, spilling her wine. Behind her chair stand three slim and meretricious young women, looking down at her: they are scantily clad, with hair arranged in the French manner in snaky ringlets. They are Napoleon's three sisters, Elisa, Pauline, and Caroline. The upper end of the table stretches across the foreground. On the extreme left. Arthur O'Connor, the only civilian, ogles a lady, holding her chin and offering her a dish of 'Pommes d'Am[our]', while she holds up a tumbler of wine. In front of him is a decanter labelled 'Maidstone'. Between this lady and the general on Napoleon's r. is a grotesque officer greedily devouring a large fragment of the 'Tower de Londres'. An officer (r.) ogles a woman with whom he drinks wine. All the women have the patched faces that in these prints indicate dissoluteness. Two of the officers have the plucked scalp of the Frenchman in BMSat 9960. Before Napoleon is a dish containing the 'Bank of England', flying a tricolour flag. The back of his chair is decorated with a carved eagle or vulture whose eyes are turned to the fatal message. Before Josephine is a dish inscribed 'Prune Monsieur' containing two plums; beside it are two bottles of 'Maraschino', one overturned. "Britannia (right), fat, good-natured, and richly dressed, holding a fan, is kissed by a tall lean French military officer who bends forward, holding her below the shoulders. He is war-worn, his pigtail stands awkwardly erect and his hair straggles over his face, while the crown of his head is almost bald, as if plucked (cf. BMSat 10072). He wears jackboots ; his hat and sword lie on the ground beside him. She is almost spherical; her shield and trident, replacing the usual spear, lean against the wall behind her and out of sight. He says: "Madame, permittez me, to pay my profound esteem to your engaging person! & to seal on your divine Lips my everlasting attachment!!!" A cynical and sensual grin indicates the character of his advances. She smiles with coy complacency, saying, "Monsieur, you are truly a well-bred Gentleman! - & tho' you make me blush, yet, you Kiss so delicately, that I cannot refuse you; tho' I was sure you would Deceive me again!!!" Above their heads are oval bust portraits of Napoleon (left) and George III (right), the two men extending their arms as if to shake hands; the King scowls, Napoleon regards him with brooding suspicion. "The centre of the design is an oval enclosed in a buckled garter, inscribed 'The Sun of the French Constitution', containing the 'Arms of France': a guillotine, dripping with blood, and irradiated by a large sun, partly below the horizon. The supporters are an important part of the design: dexter, a seated ape; sinister, a very rampant tiger; each holds a tricolour flag fringed with gold, and inscribed respectively 'Atheism', 'Desolation'. The ape wears a tricolour sash and a large bonnet rouge, forming a fool's cap, trimmed with bells and tricolour cockade. He sits on two thick volumes: 'Rosseau' [sic] and 'Voltaire', beneath which is a pamphlet: 'Tom Paine' [see BMSat 9240]. The crest is a boar. From the garter hangs an oval medallion or cameo, with the head of Bonaparte, cadaverous and sinister, in profile to the left., and having the inscription: 'And God made Buonapartè, and rested from his labours'; 'Vide French Bishops Address to the First Consul 1803'. The medallion has a background of foliage with pendent fleurs-de-lis. Below the medallion is an oval tablet with the inscription: 'Gallic Fraternity. \ - Spain, Inchain'd - \ - Holland, Plunder'd, - \ - Switzerland, Ruin'd; - \ - Italy, Destroy'd. - \ France, in Slavery.' Scrolls issuing from this extend symmetrically across the design, and form a base for the supporters; inscription : 'Invasion - Plunder \ And Destruction.' The Arms have an elaborate setting or background: Below are victims of the guillotine - piles of bleeding heads with a scroll: 'Death is an eternal Sleep'. On the left are the decollated heads of women and infants with a rosary and open book: 'Ave Maria'. These heads are comparatively few, and behind them ls a heavily barred dungeon window flanked by shackles and inscribed 'Toussaint'. On the r. the heads are much more numerous, and form a pile which balances the window. The foreground heads include a bishop, from whom a mitre has fallen, and a turbaned Moslem (cf. BMSat 10062). Above, the background is a piece of drapery framed by festooned tricolour curtains which form a border to the design. On the red stripes of the tricolour are the names of 'French Worthies'. Upper margin: (l.) 'Robespierre', 'Marat', 'Fouché', (r.) 'Buonaparte', 'Talleyrand', 'Cambaceres'. "A winding river flows (left to right) towards a hill in the background surmounted by a temple of Fame. In the foreground (left) is a 'Dunghill of Republican Horse Turds'; in the stream float turds from the dunghill, while farther up are golden apples, crowned and inscribed. The foremost is 'English-Pippin', close behind are 'Imperial-Pippin' and 'Russian-Pippin'; they are followed by a (turbaned) 'Turkish-Pippin' and a small 'Neapolitan' [Pippin]. From a mass of floating dung emerges the profile head of Bonaparte, wearing a feathered cocked hat inscribed 'First Horse Turd'; this is the central and dominating object in the river; from his mouth issues a large label: 'A ha! par ma foi - how We Apples Swim!' A spreading column of thick smoke arises from the dunghill, which is composed of inscribed fragments, from which in the left foreground tiny heads emerge, the dominant one being Fox, who says: "Caira! Caira! - chacun à son tour! We shall all Swim in our turns"; next him is 'Envy'. Tierney, the second head, says: "Yes! Yes! - none of Us was born to be Drowned". The others are Sheridan, Nicholls, Erskine, and (slightly smaller) Burdett, Derby, Taylor. "A drunken debauch in the new Union Club, see BMSat 9698. A long table, the cloth removed, one end cut off by the left margin, stretches almost across the design, slanting back slightly from the left, where it is in the foreground, and where Fox, grossly corpulent, sits in an armchair asleep, his feet on the table, a pipe in one hand. Nearly opposite his feet is the chair of state, on the table; on the empty seat is the Prince's cocked hat with triple plume, his motto 'Ich Di[en]' within the crown. The chair is backed by an elaborate architectural canopy with ornate pilasters on which swags of fruit and flowers are carved in relief: (left) grapes and lemons (materials for punch), and (right) roses and shamrocks. Above the seat are figures of Britannia and Erin, kissing, standing on a curved base inscribed 'The Union'. On the back of the chair are two clasped hands, elaborately irradiated. The chair is surrounded by broken wine-bottles; its former occupant, the Prince, lies on his back under the table, one arm flung over Lord Stanhope, who lies unconscious, clasping a bottle. On the Prince's stomach rest two feet in shoes with spiked, upcurved toes. In the foreground, opposite the Prince, Norfolk lies with his head against the seat of his overturned chair, looking very ill. All who are not incapacitated or fighting are toasting the Union (except Lansdowne and Parr, see below). On the table sits Moira, dressed as in BMSat 9386, a glass of wine held high above his head, his right leg thrust forward, while he stretches back to take the hand of Lord Clermont, [This is clear from the resemblance to BMSat 9575, and is supported by the shamrock which he and the other Irishmen wear. It is confirmed by 'London und Paris', vii. 80, where it is said that he and Moira were once bitter enemies. He is identified by Grego as General Manners, see BMSat 9288.] seated next Sheridan on the farther side of the table. Facing Clermont and in back view, Camelford sits erect, wearing a Jean de Bry coat (see BMSat 9425) and small round hat, with cropped hair. [The identification (that of Grego) is confirmed by BMSat 9716, Wright and Evans give Burdett, E. Hawkins 'Mr Manners'.] Beside him (right) two waiters bring in a full tub of Whiskey Punch, which they spill; one treads on the face of the prostrate Nicholls. Near the end of the table (right) sits Derby, his large head and crumpled features grotesquely caricatured. In the foreground on the extreme right Montagu Mathew (as in BMSat 9560) and Skeffington (as in BMSat 9557) advance dancing arm-in-arm, with tipsy grace, the former with a bottle in each hand; one reversed, the other, held above his head, splashes its contents over his partner's uplifted glass. (The pair, according to 'London und Paris', vii, 1801, p. 76, were known as inseparables in fashionable London resorts, cf. BMSat 9755.) ..."--British Museum online catalogue

"Bonaparte (right) sits at a small table writing with fierce decision; the second and third consuls sit facing him, biting their pens in pompous indecision, their papers are blank. The latter wear the flamboyant dress of the Directors (see BMSat 9199), Cambacéiès (left) has thick gouty legs. Bonaparte wears similar dress, but with a more fantastic cocked hat, in which, besides enormous feathers, is a large sheaf of olive-branches tied with tricolour (symbol of his overture to George III, see BMSat 9512); he wears jack-boots and a large sabre inscribed 'Liberté'. He writes the 'Nouvelle \ Constitution \ Grand Consul Buonaparte \ Tout en Tout Buonaparte \ Bu . . .' Beside him are papers docketed: 'Constitution pour l'Avenir: Buonaparte Grande Monarque' and 'Confiscations'. On the ground are torn papers: 'Vielles Constitutions'; 'Droit [de] l'Homme'; his foot rests on 'Constitution of 1793'. Behind, Sieyès, a lean grotesque savant, holds apart with both hands, with a violence that suggests impotence, a curtain which stretches across the design, revealing papers in pigeon-holes inscribed: 'Constitution de Parade', 'Constitution du Sang', 'Constitution de Foutre', 'Constitution de Despotism', 'Constitution de Vol[eur?]'. Above them is a model of a guillotine. Above the curtain is a festoon of tricolour, inscribed 'Vive le Constitution Une et Invisible', centred by crossed blunderbusses. The tablecloth is looped up to show a group of tiny fire-lit demons forging fetters. "The Devil, seated with his back to a dinner-table made of a butcher's block, roasts Napoleon on a pitchfork in the flames of Hell; excrement falls into a dish below. Attendant demons act as cooks. The Devil is obese and hairy with barbed tail, webbed wings, and carbuncled nose emitting flames. He wears a bonnet rouge in the form of a fool's cap, with tricolour cockade and scarf. The back of his ornate chair is a guillotine; beneath it is a pile of skulls over which is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Robespiere Marat'. A tricolour table-cloth only partly hides the dripping butcher's block. On it are a carving-knife, the blade inscribed 'Taleyrand', and fork; a chalice inscribed 'Atheism' and 'Cup of French Faith'; a salt-cellar, the salt spilled, inscribed 'Sal Infernal'. Beside it stands an ornate wine-cooler inscribed 'Favourite French Wines of the Consular Vintage'; bottles are labelled 'Sang des Suisse[s]', 'Sang des Anglais', 'Sang des Holland[ais]'. Near it lies a ballad: 'Invasion of Great Britain a Catch to be performed after Supper with a full Chorus of his Highness's Band'. Two demon attendants on the extreme right., partly concealed by the r. margin, enter with a steaming tureen of 'Crocodile Soup' [see BMSat 11057] and a sauce-boat of 'Mahomedan Gravy.' A little wingless female demon sits on a sack of 'Fuel for Everlasting Flames', plying bellows. Papers pour from the sack and others are already burning: 'Poisoning 580 wounded French soldiers' [see BMSat 10063], 'Massacre of 3800 Turks at Jaffa' [see BMSat 10062], 'Murdering 1500 Women at Toulon' [see BMSat 10095, &c.], 'Assassination of captive Swiss', 'Destruction of St Domingo' [cf. BMSat 10090], 'Fire', 'Swo[rd]', 'extermination', 'Murder', 'Treachery', 'Blasphemy', 'Blood', 'Breach of Faith', 'Cruelty', 'Envy', 'Perjury', 'Ingratitude', 'Devestation', 'Avarice'. There are three other demon cooks, winged, wearing bonnets rouges and aprons: each holds his nose. One flying above Bonaparte bastes him with a ladle-full of Brimstone. Across a vault up which the flames ascend is a beam inscribed 'L'Armée D'Angletarre' [sic] from which are suspended by the neck simian creatures wearing French military coats. "A view of the House of Commons showing only the Ministerial benches immediately beside and behind the Speaker's Chair, and, on the extreme right, the Speaker and the Clerk with part of the Table. Addington, scarcely caricatured, but wearing gloves, is the principal figure. He stands in profile to the right, right hand extended; in his left is the 'Treaty of Peace with ye Democratick ['Democratic' was then used as an equivalent of Jacobin, cf. BMSat 8310.] Powers'; from his pocket issues a paper: 'List of the new Administration'. On the front bench (left) next Addington's seat, marked by his hat, sits Hawkesbury, nervous and deprecating, legs crossed, crouching forward, holding his chin. Next him is a very fat man with gouty legs, his head concealed behind Addington, identified as Dickinson, see BMSat 9854. Just behind are Nicholls, clutching his cane, and Tierney (not caricatured), both gazing intently at Addington's back. Behind Nicholls is Wilberforce, much caricatured. "Turks and Bedouins besiege the base of a tall Corinthian column, on which is a group of terrified French savants. They have lit a fire at the base of the column whose smoke ascends in an expanding cloud; other Arabs advance with sheaves of reeds to feed the flames. On the small platform eight Frenchmen are crowded together; one, with wings attached to his shoulders and arms, steps into the void, stretching out his arms to a balloon, already wrecked by musket-fire. Their commander (probably Bonaparte), who wears a large plumed cocked hat and an order, shouts to the besiegers, holding up a placard 'Vive Mahomet Qui protegoit les Sciences'. A man kneeling beside him clasps him in terror; from his pocket issues a paper: 'Projet pour Bruler la Mecque'. A stout man (left) is about to hurl down a (? celestial) globe and a scientific instrument; another prepares to fling a large book: 'Le Ciel Revolutionné ou les Constellations Sans-culottisés'. A lean fanatic is about to commit suicide: he holds up a bottle labelled 'Tone', and clasps another labelled 'Louvet Opium'; in his belt are weapons inscribed 'Romme' and 'Roland' (all of whom but (?) Louvet killed themselves). A terrified face bites a book inscribed 'Savary'. A thin scholar (right) wearing a skull-cap is perhaps Monge. A ninth man falls from the summit (left); from his pocket issues a paper: 'Projet pour rendre les Hommes Immortels'. A stork (left) flies upwards from the column. Two scientific instruments (one electric) and six books fall from the column: 'Ebauche d'un Systeme de Législation pour une Colonie d Anthropophages' [cf. BMSat 9356]; 'Traité sur la Guillotine par un Théophilanthrope'; 'Sur le Reedification de la Tour de Babel'; 'Encyclopédie Edit: de Paris Vol: LX.'; 'Tableau de Logarithms'. The lowest, 'Projet de Fraternisation avec les Bedouins', hits a Bedouin and strikes him to the ground. On the ground is 'Le Contrat Social'. The besiegers fire at the Frenchmen or hold up their spears waiting for them to fall. One fires at an exploding balloon (right), 'La Diligence d'Abissynie' (cf. BMSat 9403), from which the (tricolour) boat has already fallen. One of the occupants falls head first towards the spears below; another descends by a parachute which has been traversed by the shot at the balloon; he is about to be transfixed by an arrow. Falling books are 'Les Ruines par le Cit: Volney'; 'Traité sur la Velocité des Corps Descendans'; and 'Theorie de l'Aerostation'. In the foreground right two fat Turks sit impassively back to back on a camel which gazes upwards; they are confident and incurious; one smokes reflectively. Arabs and Africans are in violent motion, some firing, others with spears. Behind (left) men gallop up on asses. A man (left) looks up through the wrong end of a telescope. "Burdett (right) declaims a speech whose heads are inscribed on a gigantic scroll held out to him by Fox. Fox raises his arms high to hold the scroll, one end of which falls behind his head and shoulders. The other end, still rolled and blank, is held by Sheridan who stands on the extreme left behind a writing-table over which the scroll passes. Horne Tooke, seated full face behind the table, an inkpot in one hand, writes on the scroll with a sourly inscrutable expression. Burdett, with arms thrown wide, hat in right hand, stands with legs astride on a large tattered volume: 'List of them London Corresponding Society'. He says: "There! - there! - see the causes of all our Woe! - Oh! my ruin'd Country! - Enslav'd! - ah Traitors! - Expiring Liberty! - precious, Aristocratic Villains! - Oh Unaccounted Millions! - murder'd Myriads! oh, Gallows! - Block! - Guillotine! - Caira! Caira!" Sheridan, the theatrical expert, leans forward delightedly to say: "Bravo! - Bravo! - but it should give more Emphasis to the beginning of the last Line of Exclamation." Fox, very corpulent and gouty, his gloomy face shaded by the scroll, says: "Bravissimo! - Encore the Unaccounted Millions! - Encore! - " The scroll is inscribed: 'Ministerial Crimes & Misdemeanours. - Ist Espousing the Cause of Loyalty & Old England. - 2d Making War against the Enemies of Loyalty and Old England. - 3d Destroying the Navy of the Enemies of Loyalty & Old England - 4th Capturing Malta, & all the foreign Possessions of the Enemies of loyalty and Old England. - 5th Ruining the Commerce of the Enemies . . . [ut supra]. - 6th Paying off the National Debt, in spite of the well-wishers to the Enemies . . . [ut supra]. 7th Uniting & Defending our Irish Brethren, when Invaded by the Enemies . . . [ut supra]. 8th Refusing to break Faith with the Allies of Loyalty . . . [etc.] 9th Holding out to the last, & Fighting single-handed with all the Enemies . . . Much that follows is obscured by folds in the scroll; a few words stand out: '. . . French Principles and destroying Democratic P ... 16th Extirpating [?] the Hydra of [?] Faction .. . Loyalty & Old England.' The words again become clear where the scroll rests on the table, and enfl under the pen of Horne Tooke: '18th - Destroying all hopes of a Revolution & leaving the Enemies of Loyatly [sic] & Old England to Despair & to hang themselve . . .' [see BMSat 9258, &c.]. Under the scroll lie other papers: 'Last dying Speech . . . Aristocratic Ministry' and 'Scheme of Ministerial Equality.' Against the wall and forming a background to Sheridan, Horne Tooke, and Fox is a high book-case, the books covered by a curtain, parted to reveal to inscribed 'Thel[wall]', 'Revoluti[on]', 'Cromw[ell]', 'Machiavel'. On the top three busts partly decapitated by the upper margin: 'Tom Paine, Abbé Seyeis', and 'Rob'spear'. Their positions imply that they are the 'doublures' (cf. BMSat 9261) respectively of Sheridan, Tooke, and Fox; for Fox as Ropespierre see BMSat 8450; for Tooke and Sieyes cf. BMSat 9270. On a small cabinet behind Burdett stands a model of a guillotine. "Lord Hawkesbury as a drummer boy, very thin and weedy, marches (left to right) in front of John Bull with awkward and shambling aggressiveness; he steps on to a rotten plank inscribed 'Heart of Oak' which connects the shores of England and France. His drum-sticks are a rolled document, 'Preliminaries', and an olive branch. Across his dishevelled bearskin is a ribbon: 'Peace'; from it hangs the end of a fool's cap. From his coat-pocket issues a paper: 'Instructions from Park Place' [Pitt's London address]; [So given in the Royal Kalendar (alphabetical list of the House of Commons). Broadley notes that Malmesbury lived at Park Place, Henley (this was his third country house). The crest on the drum, as well as political probability, supports the Pitt interpretation.] his drum is slung from his neck by a tricolour ribbon, and has on its side the Pitt crest, a stork holding an anchor. His expression is deprecatingly wary; and he looks sideways at John Bull, who is accompanied by a swarm of little English 'Jacobins'. He says: "Allons, Enfans de la Patrie! - now's your time Johnny! - my dear Boys! - did not I promise long ago, to take my Friends by the hand, & lead them on to March to the Gates of Paris? - Allons! vive la Liberta!!" In the narrow Channel which he is about to cross float Britannia's discarded shield, a large money-bag of '£400 Million', and papers inscribed: 'Malta', 'West India Islands', 'Cape of Good Hope', 'Map of Egypt', 'Restoration of French Monarchy', 'List of Soldiers & Sailors Killed'. John Bull (left), a simple yokel, very fat and good-natured, marches after Hawkesbury in high glee waving his hat; over his civilian dress is a sword-belt from which a sword falls to the ground, hilt downwards. He shouts: "Rule Britannia! - \ Britannia Rules the Waves!!! \ Caira! - Caira!" He is being urged forward by a crowd of little figures, members of the Opposition, who wave or wear their bonnets rouges. They vary in scale: the most prominent is Fox who marches along blowing a trumpet; Norfolk drags John forward, clutching his coat with both hands; behind Norfolk Tierney's head appears. Behind Fox is Sheridan pushing John from behind; on Sheridan's right is General Walpole; on his left, Burdett. Behind him on the extreme left is Moira, with a conspicuous whisker. Other persons are represented by arms waving caps. In front and under John's feet are three tiny naked mannikins: Nicholls holdup his eyeglass, his legs attached to his shoulders to show that he is 'nobody', cf. BMSat 5570; the paunchy Derby, blowing a French horn, and, smallest of all, M. A. Taylor blowing a trumpet. Across the water, in France, and on the extreme right, is a ramshackle building, perhaps a ruined church, with a large placard: 'Vive la Liberta'. "Windham, not caricatured, lies in bed dreaming, his right hand extended, his left hand against his head. The coverlet is patterned (inconspicuously) with dragons, &c. The bed is surrounded by solid clouds, supporting visions. At its head (right) is an olive branch bent down by the weight of a vulture, which clutches a bleeding hare, while it savagely croaks 'Peace!' On the left Death, a skeleton on stilts formed of spears (skeleton A stilts coloured red), bestraddles a pile of British trophies; one spearpoint pierces a 'List of British Conquests: Cape of Good Hope Malta Egypt West India [Islands]'; the other rests on a tilted dish inscribed 'Oh! the Roast Beef of Old England', from which a sirloin is slipping. The other objects are steaming pudding, an overturned tankard inscribed 'J. Bull's Old Stout', small cask of 'True British Spirits', spilling its contents; two coronets, a mitre, and a mace. The skeleton, reminiscent of Death in BMSat 6699, by Gillray, is in back view, turning a grinning head towards Windham; ['London und Paris' quotes (p. 319), as probably in Gillray's mind, Milton, 'Paradise Lost', ii. 285-7: 'Death Grinn'd horrible a ghastly smile, to hear His famine should be fill'd . . .'] it wears a large bonnet rouge and in the right hand is a cord attached to the dripping blade of a guillotine. This emerges from clouds beside the blazing dome of St. Paul's, from which the ball and cross are falling. On the extreme left is the Tower of London flying the French flag. By the foot of the bed stands a fat demon with barbed tail, webbed wings, and the features of Fox; he plays a guitar and sings delightedly: "Caira! - Caira! - Ca-i-r-a!" [cf. BMSat 10566, where he has discarded the song]. By the near side of the bed sits (on a chamber-pot) a small figure, Justice, with bowed head registering despair, her scales broken and dismantled, her sword, inscribed 'Justicia', broken. Emerging from clouds are four figures: Hawkesbury, with a sulky, youthful profile, writes 'Peace' on Britannia's 'Death-Warrant'. Behind him stands Pitt guiding his hand, a finger to his lips. Near them Bonaparte, scarcely caricatured, stands arrogantly, holding a rope which is round the neck of Britannia, while he points imperiously towards the guillotine on his right. She stands full face, weeping, her wrists shackled, with a broken shield and trident. Behind her is a (captured) fleet, in full sail, with tricolour flags. Above their heads flies a demoniac Fame, blowing two trumpets. Two groups of tiny decapitated figures kneel at the head of the bed, appealing to the sleeper. The French are on Windham's right, those in the front row being evidently (left to right) the Dauphin, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Mme Elisabeth; the King holds out a placard: 'Oh! Remember Our Cause! poor Ghosts of French Ladies and Gentlemen.' Behind, two bishops are conspicuous. On Windham's left are men in peers' robes; their placard is inscribed: 'Ah! See what is to become of Us poor English Men of Consequence'. In the foreground are two groups of (Opposition) politicians with the heads of rats. One eats from a dish of 'Cheese Parings', the other from a coffer of 'Candle Ends', inscribed 'Treasury' [both phrases derive from a speech by Windham in which he is alleged to have derided paltry economies, an old gibe, see BMSat 9515 and 'Windham Papers', ii. 178]. Both are filled with papers inscribed 'Place', 'Pension', 'Sinecure', 'Office'. The former group are identified (in Gillray's hand) [On a slip evidently written for Miss Banks, pasted to an impression from the Banks Collection.] as Erskine, Sheridan, Tierney, Norfolk, and Bedford; the latter are Nicholls, Grafton, Stanhope, and the Earl of Oxford (who is unmistakably Burdett), Sir G. "In a small space between the House Commons (left) and a rustic alehouse (right) Lord Temple and Lord Camelford play battledore and shuttlecock with the head (the features as in BMSat 9200) of Horne Tooke. In this are stuck feathers, five inscribed respectively: 'Deceit, Vanity, Jacobinism, New Morality [cf. BMSat 9240], Envy'. From the neck hang (torn) clerical bands. Camelford in back view, 'profil perdu', wears a rakish hat with curved brim (as in BMSat 9699), a naval officer's coat with sailor's striped trousers, and buckled shoes; from his coat pocket issues a paper: 'Effusion of Loyalty'. He says: "There's a Stroke for you, Messmate! and, if you kick him back, I'll return him again, dam'me! - if I should be sent on a cruise to Moorfields [i.e. Bedlam], for it! - go it, Coz:" Temple, a stout country gentleman, scarcely caricatured, wearing a stiff round hat, prepares to return the stroke vigorously, left fist clenched; he says: "Send him back? - yes, I'll send him back Twenty Thousand times, before such a high flying Jacobin-Shuttlecock shall pearch [sic] it here, in his Clerical band." Both play vigorously with legs astride. Through the wide doorway behind him, inscribed 'St Steevens', is seen the Opposition side of the House of Commons densely packed, the Speaker just visible in his chair, the Clerk staring apprehensively. All the (tiny) members wave red caps to cheer their champion, shouting "The Church for Ever, [?] dem[me]". Sheridan and Fox only are characterized. The alehouse is a primitive thatched building with the chequers sign. On it are two placards: 'The Old Sarum Electors', five pigs in a sty eating from a trough. Below: 'The House of Call for Independent Members'. Against the building are a rustic table and bench. On the ground by Camelford is a 'List of Candidates for Old Sarum, J. H. Tooke, Black Dick [it was reported, though denied by Camelford, that he had declared his intention of returning his black servant if Tooke's election should be annulled], Thelwall' [see vol. vii]. "Britannia, terrified, faint, and dishevelled sits on the ground supported by Addington and Hawkesbury, and defended by Sheridan, a Silenus-like and ragged Harlequin. They are on the coast towards which are advancing many rowing-boats filled with little French soldiers. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the foremost boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body, to show that he is Nobody, as in BMSat 5570, &c. The distant French coast (right) is covered with troops marching towards the shore. Clouds of smoke rise from the beach, which is concealed by the foreground. Britannia, wearing Roman dress with cothurnes, raises her arms, and shrieks (parodying Hamlet): "Doctors & Ministers of dis grace defend me!" The 'dis' is scored through but conspicuously legible. Addington holds a bottle of Gunpowder to her nose, and looks in alarm at the approaching army. He says: "Do not be alarm'd my dear lady! the Buggabo's (the Honest Gentlemen, I mean,) are avowedly directed to Colonial service, - they can have nothing to do Here - my Lady! - nothing to do with Us! - do take a Sniff or two, to raise your Spirits, and try to stand, if it is only upon One Leg!" Hawkesbury looks down with deep melancholy, supporting her (cracked) shield, and holding her (damaged) spear. He says: "Yes my Lady, you must try to Stand up, or we shall never be able to "March to Paris"". Sheridan holds Harlequin's wooden sword of 'Dramatic-Loyalty' in his right hand (cf. BMSat 9916). On his left arm is a shield with Medusa's head, the snaky locks inscribed: 'Abuse', 'Bouncing', 'Puffing', 'Detraction', 'Stolen Jests', 'Malevolence', 'Stale Wit', 'Envy'. He wears a hat turned up in front with a tricolour cockade; its crown is a fool's cap with two ears and a bell. Round his paunch is a tricolour sash through which is thrust a paper: 'Ways and Means to get a Living'. He shouts in defiance at the distant army: "Let 'em come! - dam'me!!! - where are the French Buggabo's? - single handed I'd beat forty of 'em!!! dam'me, I'd pay 'em like Renter Shares, sconce off their half Crowns!!! - mulct them out of their Benefits, & come ye Drury Lane Slang over 'em!" Behind, between Addington and Sheridan, is the head of Fox, holding his hat before his eyes; he says: "Dear me - what can be the reason of the Old Lady being awak'd in such a Fright? - I declare I can't see any thing of the Buggabo's!" "Sir Francis Burdett, scarcely caricatured, is being drawn (r. to left.) by his supporters in his carriage towards the hustings, past a densely packed and cheering mob. He bows gracefully, his tricorne (with a tricolour cockade) under his arm. On the three panels of the barouche are depicted (1) a bird with an olive-branch, and the scroll 'Egalité'; (2) a hand emerging from flames holding up a fire-brand, with a scroll, 'The Torch of Liberty') a frothing tankard on which is a bust portrait of 'Buonaparte', the scroll 'Three Pence a Pot'. The first and third panels have the motto the 'Peace &\ Plenty'. The driver is Horne Tooke; he flourishes his whip over the heads of his team, and smokes a long pipe. In his hat are a tricolour cockade and a blue and orange (buff) favour. From his pocket issues a stream of election literature, part of which has reached the ground: 'Speeches for Sir Fra[ncis] on ye Hustings'; 'Hints'; 'Speech from the Hustings'; 'Speeches for the Crown & Anchor Dinner'; 'Sir Fra[ncis's] Address to the Mob'; 'Bills for all the Pissing Posts [cf. BMSat 9886]; 'Hints for the Democra[tic] Newspapers'; 'Sir Francis's Patriotic Speech on the Defence of the Country' [see BMSat 10054]; Bills for Hackney Coaches'; 'Important Fact - Pitt the Supporter of Justices'; 'No Begging Candidate'; 'No Squinting Representative'; 'A Squeese for the Contractors.' The last lies besides a dog over whose body the hind-wheel passes makine a wound from which guineas are pouring. Its collar is inscribed 'A Cur-tis' (Sir W. Curtis, a contractor, cf. BMSat 7676, was one of Mainwaring's chief supporters). Behind the carriage, in place of footmen, stand Sheridan Erskine, and Tierney. Sheridan, a favour inscribed 'no Govr Aris' in his hat, holds up a fringed pictorial banner, inscribed 'Governor Aris [the name almost obliterated] in all his Glory': Pitt violently scourges Britannia, whose hands are confined in a pillory. Erskine (in wig and gown) holds up a banner 'The Good-Old Cause' (a republican slogan of the seventeenth century), surmounted by a cap of Liberty with a tricolour cockade. Tierney holds up a huge key tied to a pole and labelled 'No Bastille'. Ten or more men drag the carriage by ropes; the wheelers are Fox as a ragged chimney-sweeper with a brush under his arm, and Norfolk, wearing a striped shirt and an apron and mopping his forehead. In front of these are Derby, as a jockey, and Lansdowne. The next pair are the Duke of Bedford as a farmer in a smock and (?) the Duke of Northumberland, wearing an apron. He wears Roman armour with medieval greaves and a huge sabre; in his left hand is a large oval shield, in his right he supports a vertical tilting-lance, the head of which is cut off by the upper margin. "The new Ministers (identified by inscriptions below the design) don the clothes of their predecessors. These are (left to right) the Chancellor (Eldon) on the Woolsack, in back view, wearing the wig, enormously elongated so that it trails on the floor, characteristic of Loughborough (cf. BMSat o. 6796): 'Lord L------gh------h's large Wig'. He says: "O such a Day as This, so renown'd so victorious, \ "Such a Day as This, was never seen!" His feet are pressed against the front bench. The principal figure is that of Addington standing in profile to the right on the 'Treasury Bench', inside an enormous jack-boot, reaching to his neck: over this hangs Pitt's far too large coat (the Windsor uniform, blue with red facings). His forehead disappears in a vast cocked hat, and his wig-bag is enormous. He is 'Mr Pitt's Jack-Boot'. He says: "Well! to be sure these here Cloaths do fit me to a inch! - & now that I've got upon this Bench, I think I may pass muster for a fine tall Fellow, & do as well for a Corporal, as my old Master, Billy, himself!!! - ". In front stands Hawkesbury, youthful, nervous, and almost tearful; he stands within the bulky breeches of his predecessor as 'Ld G - n - le's Breeches'; he says: "Mercy upon me! - what a Deficiency is here!!! ah poor Hawkee! - what will be the consequence, if these d------d Breeches should fall off in thy ''March to Paris", & thou should be found out a Sans-Culotte?" Lord Hobart, a very broad figure, 'Mr D-d-s's Broad Sword', stands full face, a curious divided petticoat (made out of Dundas's kilt) is buttoned under his arms, over a military coat. His head is overweighted by Dundas's large Scots cap; he stands defiantly, left hand on hip, in his right he holds erect a broad-sword dripping blood. He says: "Ay! Ay! leave Us to settle them all! here's my little Andrew Ferrara!!! - was it not Us that tip'd em the broadside in the Baltic? - was it not Us that gave ye Crocodiles a breakfast in Egypt? - I'm a Rogue if it is not Us that is to save little England from being swallow'd up in the Red Sea!!!" In the foreground (right) the fat, elderly, but comely Lord Glenbervie (who succeeded Canning as Paymaster General) sits on the floor in shirt and waistcoat, trying to pull on the pointed slippers which are far too long and too narrow for his gouty feet. He is 'Mr C-n-g's Old Slippers'. He says: "ah, Dam'n his narrow Pumps! I shall never be able to bear them long on my Corns! - zounds! are these Shoes fit for a Man, in present-pay Free Quarters". Behind him stand together the two new Treasury secretaries (John Hiley Addington, brother of the Minister, wearing spectacles, and Nicholas Vansittart). They wear the coats of their predecessors, which trail on the ground, and hold, like muskets at attention, two enormous pens. On the head of each is a vast round ink-pot: 'G. Rose's old Stand' and 'C. Long's old Stand'. They are 'Treasury Ink Stands'. Behind (left), partly hidden by Eldon and Addington, are two unidentified figures: a man wearing a large naval cocked hat, and a lawyer in back view. The former must be St. Vincent who succeeded Spencer at the Admiralty. The latter may be Law who became Attorney General. Between and behind Addington and Hawkesbury is a sulky-looking man in a military coat and an enormous busby in which is a huge pen: 'Wyndham's Cap & Feather'. "A reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Fox to various groups of the Opposition, [With one or two exceptions the identifications are those of Miss Banks; the characterization is excellent, and most are unmistakeable.] in which the arrangement has political and social significance. Three Grenvilles bow to the host and hostess; the Marquis of Buckingham, wearing his ribbon, holding hat and gold-headed cane and showing a gouty leg and foot, bends low. Next is Lord Grenville, clasping his hat to his breast, more ingratiating but less obsequious than his brother. Next is the stout Lord Temple, awkwardly imitating his uncle's gesture. Fox, wearing a sword, returns Buckingham's bow, his hand on his heart; on his right. stands the fat Mrs. Fox, curtseying, and ogling Grenville. She holds a fan on which is a profile portrait of 'Napoleone Ist'; from her pocket projects a flask of 'French Brandy', indicative of her antecedents (cf. BMSats 7370, 10589) as well as her sympathies, cf. BMSat 9892). On the extreme right. is the Prince of Wales, in back view, the greater part of his figure cut off by the margin, but unmistakable. From his pocket projects a paper: 'Henry IV. Sc. I [sic] Pr of W -l know you all, & shall . . . while.' A short fat man gazes up at him admiringly, obsequiously amused; he is identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr [i.e. General] Fitzpatrick', but resembles M. A. Taylor. Beside him is a dog, his collar inscribed 'Tommy Tattle' [? Thomas Tyrwhitt]. Mrs. Fitzherbert sits, in semi-state, in the corner of a sofa, holding a fan on which are the Prince's feathers and 'Ich Dien'; she is about to take a ticket, 'Coalition Masquerade', proffered with ingratiating vivacity by Lord Carlisle. Next Carlisle behind the sofa stands the Duke of Clarence, facing the Prince, and cruelly caricatured. Mrs. Jordan takes his right. arm, but is reading Jobson & Nell [characters in 'The Devil to pay] with the Farce of Equality' [see BMSat 7908, &c.]. Behind the pair are Col. McMahon, sly and furtive, and a large man, resembling the Duke of York. He looks at Napoleon, whose head peers over the top of a triple fortification on the French coast, bristling with guns, at the base of which small gun-boats are drawn up, on a low cliff rising from the sea. Napoleon, wearing his feathered cocked hat, haggard and alarmed, says: "I'm a com'ing! I'm a' coming!!!" Beside him flies a tricolour flag inscribed 'Vive la Liberta.' John, brawny and contemptuous, asks: "You're a' coming"? - You be d-n'd! "John Bull stands squarely, holding a thick stick with a carved head representing a bull-dog, and a frothing tankard ornamented with a crown. He turns his eyes with appraising disparagement towards Sheridan (r.), a ragged bill-sticker, who slouches forward with conspiratorial impressiveness. The latter, r. hand raised warningly, says: "The Corsican Thief has slip'd from his Quarters \ And coming to Ravish your Wives & your Daughters". In his left hand is his bill-sticker's pole, under his arms are papers: 'Loyal Bills distributed pro bono publico', 'Sherry Andrew's Address'. From inside his coat project 'Play Bills'. A bonnet rouge with tricolour cockade, shaped like a fool's cap, hangs from his coat pocket. John answers: "Let him come and be D------n'd! - what cares Johnny Bull! \ With my Crabstick assured I will fracture his Scull! \ Or I'll squeese the vile reptile 'twixt my Finger & Thumb, \ Make him stink like a Bug, if he dares to presume!" John wears a laced cocked hat and powdered wig. His dress is old-fashioned, with spotted handkerchief round his neck, unbuttoned waistcoat, and the wrinkled gaiters of the farmer. From his waistcoat pockets hang papers: 'List of the Volunteer Corps'; 'God save the King'; 'Navy List.'; 'Rule Britannia'. Behind him is a Gothic chair, resembling the Coronation Chair, and having the Royal Arms on the back. This shows that, despite his dress, John is George III. [This is asserted in 'London und Paris', xi. 169.] Beside it (r.) is one end of a heavy, ancient table on which lies a 'London Gazette' with columns headed 'List of Captures' and 'Imports'. Across it lies John's long pipe. On the wall is a broadside, 'The Roast Beef of Old England', headed by a print of an ox regarding a frog. It begins: 'As once on a time a Young Frog \ Beheld a large Ox that . . . \ . . . O the Roast Beef of Old . . . [other words illegible].' "Napoleon, enthroned, receives the obeisance of Fox and his party. The centre figure is the enormous Mrs. Fox, burlesqued, and full face, who curtsies, fan in hand; her coarse features and patched face indicate Gillray's view of her antecedents, cf. BMSats 5352, 5587, 10589. On her right and next Bonaparte, O'Connor bends forward, chapeau-bras; from his pocket projects a pamphlet: 'Trial of O'Conner at Maid[stone]'. Opposite Bonaparte, and on his wife's left, Fox much caricatured, and with gouty swollen legs, makes a low bow, right hand on his breast, hat held out. He wears court dress with a sword. From his pocket issues a document: 'Original Jacobin Manuscripts'. Behind him Erskine, tall and self-important in barrister's wig and gown, bows with a complacent smile, holding out a brief bag in his left hand. Behind him Lord and Lady Holland (who is meretricious-looking) are bowing. In the foreground and on Fox's left, Robert Adair, much emaciated, grovels on the floor, his head between his arms which are extended along the carpet, in a gesture of abject homage. From his coat pockets project 'Revolutionary Odes, by Citizen Bow-ba-dara' and 'Intelligence for the Morning Chronicle.' Napoleon, very thin, sits on a canopied throne whose arms terminate in globes covered with maps of the world, each supported on the shoulders of a naked manikin. On one globe the Consul rests his right hand, clutching it with long predatory fingers; the left hand is extended towards Fox. He wears military uniform, with a huge plumed cocked hat, and (like Fox) a black bag attached to his coat collar, below his cropped hair. His throne is on a circular dais, covered with a fringed carpet, with a tasselled cushion for his feet. Behind it is a carved irradiated sun, reminiscent of Louis XIV, le Roi Soleil, but with eyes which look down in surprise at the First Consul. Behind him walk Spencer (First Lord), holding 'Enemies Ships taken & Des[troyed]', and Loughboroug in his Chancellor's wig. Three heads are dimly visible in the shadow of the archway. The rabble are led by Sheridan and Tierney; the former a butcher with cleaver raised to strike, the latter a ragged cobbler wearing a bonnet rouge; he is about to fling a cat which he holds by the tail. Behind them are Jekyll, as a chimney-sweep with brush and shovel, but wearing a barrister's wig and (tattered) gown, Bedford dressed as a jockey and holding out whip and cap (cf. BMSat 9261, &c), Nicholls and Tyrhwitt Jones, both holding up hats with tricolour cockades. At the back are Norfolk, about to hurl a bottle of wine, and Burdett. There is also raised above the crowd an arm which has just hurled a full tankard of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421]. Other missiles include a lighted squib, a bludgeon, vegetables, and a book: 'Jacobin Charges, Speeches Essays'. Bedford cries: "Push on, dam'me! - work 'em! - its our Turn now!" The sentry answers: "Your Turn! - no, no! - whoever goes out You'll not come in!" "The fat and clumsy William Dickinson stands on gouty legs in profile to the right, outside the open door of the House of Commons, where Addington is speaking. He stoops, holding a cane in his gloved hand, and from his closed and protruding lips issues a cloud inscribed : - "let me see - 25 Millions! how are we Ruin'd? - 10 pr Cent for my Money! - income tax taken off! - well! - well! - well! - ". "'The Feast' is a steaming sirloin in a dish inscribed John Bull's Comfort, flanked by (left) a frothing tankard decorated with the Royal Arms and (right) a plum-pudding. The three harpies, Tierney (left), Shuckburgh, and Jekyll (right), malignantly vomit and excrete on the feast. Tierney hovers over the tankard, Shuckburgh over the beef; Jekyll, with webbed wings and barrister's wig and bands, is planted on the pudding. "Count Starhemberg (left), Austrian Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to England, drives in a post-chaise drawn by two galloping horses past the gate of the Tuileries (right), where Napoleon stands, with straddling legs and outstretched arms, small, angry, and impotent, shouting, "Ha, diable! - va't 'en! Grenadiers are drawn up on both sides of Napoleon, their heads receding in perspective under the arch of the palace. They have huge moustaches, and wear bearskins, high stocks, and Hessian boots. "The corner of a tailor's fitting-room. A hideous and plebeian Englishman, fat and short-legged, and wearing a curled Brutus wig, looks at his reflection in an elaborately framed wall-mirror crowned with a bonnet-rouge (left). The tailor, a simian monstrosity standing behind him (right), adjusts the sleeve of the coat. The coat (so styled after de Bry, see BMSat 9389) has a high collar, is heavily padded, with full sleeves gathered at the shoulders, and is cut back into narrow tails. The boots have long pointed toes, the tops, with high tasselled peaks, projecting in front of the leg far above the knee. He stands on a large volume: 'Nouveaux Costumes'. The tailor is foppish, though wearing a bonnet-rouge with a long peak, long queue, ungartered stockings, and slippers. A tricolour measuring-tape is draped about him. He says: "A ha! - dere my Friend, I fit you to de Life! - dere is Libertè - no tight Aristocrat Sleeve, to keep from you do, vat you like! - aha! begar, dere be only want von leetel National Cockade to make look quite a la mode de Paris!!" John Bull answers: "Liberty! - quoth'a! - why sound I can't move my Arms at all! for all it looks woundy big! - ah! damn your French Alamodes, they give a man the same Liberty as if he was in the Stocks! - give me my Old Coat again, say I, if it is a little out at the Elbows." "A mounted officer with drawn sabre heads a procession of 'Volunteers' linked by a chain to his horse and to each other. The horse is a well-bred animal with handsome trappings, but the rider is lean and has torn breeches. He is followed by a file of three whose necks are attached to the horse and whose hands or arms are pinioned. All are miserable wretches, barelegged and ragged; the last, less abject, has sabots and takes snuff. He is chained to the neck of a donkey on whose back is a pannier containing three despairing conscripts. To the animal's tail is tied a low truck on which a moribund shackled man lies on his back, his knees drawn up. To the truck is chained, in a stooping position, a man whose hands are tied behind his back, his nails being long talons. Birds, scenting carrion, fly towards the procession. "A burlesqued battle-piece. A French army on the sea-shore flees in wild confusion from the fire of a group of English soldiers with a Union flag and two cannon on a low sandy cliff (right). Clouds of smoke suggest an intense cannonade from invisible British troops. In the centre of the French fugitives is Napoleon spurring a white horse, his sabre flying into the air from his outstretched right hand. Two other officers are mounted, one hurls away a banner with skull and cross-bones; the rest are infantry. Corpses, decollated heads, weapons, &c, lie on the ground, trampled on by fugitives. On the horizon are men-of-war; in the sea, ships boats in advance or retreat. The British are realistically drawn, the French are burlesqued. "A crowded design: the room of a quack doctor or astrologer; Larevellière-Lépeaux sits at his table in a gothic chair; five generals approach him from the right, two others are seated (left) behind his chair. The doctor wears his official (Director's) dress (see BMSat 9199) with feathered hat; a bonnet-rouge crowns the back of his chair, against which leans a book: 'Hortus Siccus' (Larevellière was a botanist). He is hunchbacked, with deformed legs ('The holy Hunchback . . .', cf. BMSat 9240). He holds up a retort in which a liquid explodes, so that tiny decollated heads fly upwards. On his table are jars, bottles, and an open book: 'Mal de Naples sive Morbus Gallicus'. (The blockade of Naples by the British fleet was followed by its evacuation by the French (8 May) and risings against the republicans.) A mortar is inscribed 'Arch-Duke Boluses' (the Arch-duke Charles had beaten the French decisively at Stockach, 25 Mar.). A jar is 'Preparation of Lead', a box is 'Lake's Pills' (a pun on Leake's quack remedy; Lake had defeated the Irish rising in 1798). A large jar of 'Esprit de Robespierre' contains a guillotine; a smaller one, a dagger. The five generals are in advanced stages of disease or decay. The foremost holds his hat; from his pocket issues a paper: 'Case of Diabetes'. The next hobbles, contorted with pain, his shambling puny legs swollen below the knee, his boot slashed; he has a paper: 'l'ennemi inquietait mes derrieres'. A lean man has one eye and holds an ear-trumpet to his ear. On the left a general, his face distorted, sits painfully on a close-stool decorated with a bonnet-rouge and motto: 'Vive la grande Nation'. He clutches a paper: 'Ordres, les Ordres'. Beside him is a torn paper, 'Plans de Campagne'. Jourdan, facing him, vomits into a chamber-pot punningly inscribed 'Jourdan' (cf. BMSat 7908, &c). On the ground are clyster-pipe and syringe, books, and papers: 'French Conquêtes' (torn); 'Regime de Terreur' with 'alo Septembre' (BMSat 8122), 'Russian Regimen' (see BMSat 9408, &c), 'Hosologie [sic] Francoise', and 'Catalogue of new French Diseases'. A large crocodile, emblem of the quack and of Egypt (see BMSat 9250), is suspended (as in BMSat 7735) from the roof by tricolour bands. Against the wall are many emblematical objects: on the extreme left an ape (Liberty) seated on a bracket holds a bonnet-rouge on a staff. Above is a terrestrial globe suspended upside down. Next are two mummies swathed with tricolour bandages; the larger is 'Buonaparte', the smaller 'Kleber' (both confined to Egypt by the British fleet). Glass jars containing specimens of abortion are ranged on a long shelf inscribed 'Projets Avortès' [sic].
