Abstract:: "Rows of French soldiers (left) do infantry drill with muskets seated on the backs of sorry asses (cf. BMSat 9361), with no harness but rope halters. The man in the foreground (the others being concealed by the closeness of the ranks), though smart, is ragged, his foot projecting through the boot. Their officer (right), with raised sword, gives the word of command seated on an ass which brays with outstretched neck at the other asses. He has a saddle and his ass is in slightly better condition. Clouds form a background. See BMSat 9355, &c."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "Two Frenchmen, who have been attempting to domesticate the crocodile, are seized by the angry beasts. A monster seizes in its jaws the leg of the man who has attempted to ride it; the man clasps halter and whip, his saddle lies on the ground together with a large book, 'Sur l'Education du Crocodile', beside which are three plates: 'Planche 1st', a Frenchman rides a crocodile; 'Pl: 2de', a Frenchman drives a high phaeton drawn by a pair of crocodiles; 'Pl: 3me', a small boat is drawn through the water by a crocodile. In the middle distance (right) a crocodile seizes the coat of a terrified man, who drops a book: 'Les Droits du Crocodile' (cf. BMSat 9352). Abstract:: "A French hussar on a sorry horse flees before a well-mounted Mameluke (cf. BMSat 9272), with a sabre in each hand, who rides him down. The Frenchman (left) turns in his saddle to hold out defensively a sabre whose blade is inscribed 'Vaincre ou Courir'; he spurs his horse viciously. His enemy rides in heel-less slippers, one rein in his teeth, the other on the horse's neck, two pistols on cords fly out behind him. The expressions of the horses reflect those of their masters: abject terror and fierce confidence."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "A grotesque, obese, and negroid Copt, holding a mace or staff, rides (right to left) an ass which, though led procession-ally by a Copt, proceeds on account of the bayonet with which a grinning French soldier stabs its hind quarters. The 'Mayor' wears a French military coat and breeches, with a tricolour scarf and cocked hat with large tricolour plumes. He is otherwise naked, and a heavy chain of beads hangs from his ear. The 'Procureur' is naked except for a cocked hat and tricolour scarf; he carries a (?) goad as a staff of office. Behind his ear is a pen."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "An elderly courtier of the 'ancien régime' (left) bows low, in profile to the right, grimacing: 'Je suis voire tres humble Serviteur'. His features are aquiline; he wears a high toupet wig and a large black bag (which flies into the air as he bows) with a solitaire ribbon round the neck. His small tricorne hat is in his right hand, his left hand is on his breast; his fingers are extravagantly pointed. His successor (right) stands in back view, legs astride, hands thrust deep into his coat-pockets, a bludgeon projecting vertically from the left pocket. His head, with blunt, coarse features, is turned in profile to the left, to say: "Baiser mon Cu [sic]". He has shaggy hair with a long pigtail queue, and wears a large cocked hat, one peak on his neck, round which is a clumsy neck-cloth. His coat is loose with broad collar and projecting revers. His breeches are tied beneath the knee, showing striped stockings above very wrinkled boots with grotesquely pointed toes."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "Design in an oval, placed on an oblong background representing a stone wall, and thus simulating the projection of a magic lantern. The figures, except Wilberforce, are light against a dark background. Addington, Hawkesbury, and Fox, as the three witches in Macbeth, cook their hell-broth in a cauldron. From this rises a cloud inscribed 'PEACE' which frames a skeleton (of Britannia). Its long hair shows that it is that of a woman; in one hand is a trident, in the other her shield. From the pot issue the tail and one paw of the British lion. His decollated head lies on the ground (right); on it stands a crowing Gallic cock wearing a tiny bonnet rouge. Addington stands on the left ladling into the pot guineas from a sack inscribed: 'To make Gruel Thick & Slab' [Macbeth, iv. i]. He raises his right arm, holding up an olive branch; a serpent twines round arm and branch; its fangs pointing at the word 'Peace'. Hawkesbury crouches on the right, recklessly feeding the fire with papers inscribed: 'Dominion of the Sea', 'Egypt', 'Malta', 'Cape', 'Continental Alliances', 'Honduras', 'Switzerland', 'Brit[isk] Isles'; beside him are others: 'Gibralter' and 'Ireland'. Among the papers already blazing the word 'West Indies' is just visible. At his side hangs an ink-pot with a pen, suspended from a tricolour ribbon, indicating the Foreign Secretary. Behind him Fox, as a fat old woman, stands full face, holding up a broom tied with a tricolour ribbon. All three wear conical hats; that of Addington has a tricolour favour, that of Fox a tricolour cockade and bunches of olive. Addington is grave, Hawkesbury melancholy, Fox exultant. In front of the cauldron, beside the lion's head, kneels Wilberforce (left), a little figure in Monkish robes, hideously caricatured, chanting a 'Hymn of Peace' from an open book."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "Bonaparte (much caricatured), standing precariously on a 'Dutch Cheese', is attacked by the allies. Austria and Russia pull from his thin leg a large clumsy boot, consisting of a map of 'Italy'; coins (French plunder) pour from the boot, on which 'Naples', 'Rome', 'Florence', and other geographical divisions are indicated. Austria is a fierce hussar, smoking a pipe, on his cap is the Habsburg eagle; he tugs at the boot, the Russian bear (on the extreme left) assists him, its paws clasping his waist. A ferocious Turk holds Bonaparte by the nose and raises a scimitar whose blade, inscribed 'St Jean d'Acre', drips blood; across his shoulders are strung bleeding ears and noses to which Bonaparte's is to be added. A sailor (right), representing the British Navy, seizes Bonaparte from behind; in his hat are ribbons inscribed 'Nelson', 'Duncan', 'Bridport'. A fat Dutchman on the extreme right, with the blunt profile of the Prince of Orange, tugs at the cheese in order to dislodge Bonaparte; he kneels on a paper, 'Secret Expedition'. Bonaparte's uniform is ragged, his left foot is bare, but in each hand is a blood-stained dagger. In the background (right) tiny figures (probably Dutch) dance hand-in-hand round a bonfire in which burns a 'Tree of Liberty', a bonnet-rouge on a pole, cf. Abstract:: "Addington and Napoleon face each other defiantly across a narrow channel. Addington, the nearer, is the larger, and much the taller. He wears regimentals, cocked hat, and shapeless boots; he stands with arms akimbo, sabre in his hand; from each pocket projects a medicine-bottle, one labelled 'Composing Draft', the other 'Stimulating Draft'. He looks at Napoleon with a chop-fallen stare, saying, "who's afraid? damme? - \ O Lord. O Lord - what a Firey Fellow he is! \ - Who's afraid? damme? \ O dear! what will become of ye Roast Beef? \ damme! who's afraid? \ O dear! O dear." (The lines are alternately in large and tiny letters to distinguish between words spoken aloud and to himself.) He straddles across a steaming sirloin on a dish inscribed: 'O the Roast Beef of Old England'. Napoleon, who straddles even more widely, holds the hilt of his sabre; his head is large, his cocked hat grotesquely huge. He glares at the beef, saying, "Ah! ha, sacrè dieu! vat do I see yonder? \ Dat look so invitinly Red & de Vite? - \ Oh by Gar! I see 'tis de Roast Beef of Londres \ Vich I vill chop up, at von letel bite!" (Cf. BMSat 5790.) Behind Addington is the front bench in the House of Commons. Hawkesbury, thin, stooping, and melancholy, his hands on his hips, his arms curiously twisted, says: "Ah who's afraid now of Marching to Paris? ah who's afraid now." Behind Addington's seat stand two dim figures, waving their hats; they say: "who's afraid! Brother Bragg" and "who's afraid Brother Hely" ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

Abstract:: "Addington and Hawkesbury, in the gateway of the Treasury (inscribed 'Granary'), snare three bats with the heads of Grey, Sheridan, and Tierney. Addington kneels on one knee holding out a dark lantern and a hat with a tricolour cockade filled with papers inscribed 'Sinecure', 'Place', 'Annuity', 'Pension', 'Post'. Hawkesbury, standing behind him, holds out a net supported on two sticks in which to catch the creatures which fly, like harpies, straight towards Addington, dazzled by the lantern's rays. Grey's eyes are fixed on the lantern, those of Tierney and Sheridan, the last with an expression of eager greed, on the papers in the hat. Beside Addington is a sack of 'Sterling British Corn', overflowing with guineas. After the title: '"Bat-catching, (says Buffon,) does not require much art, for, flying always in the Night, they are easily attracted by a Dark-Lanthorn & being always hungry, may be easily caught, by a few Cheese-Parings, or Candle Ends; - they are so rapacious, that if they once get into the Granary, they never cease devouring, while there is any thing left." - Vide.
