Fox takes deliberate aim, resting his musket on the back of his shooting-pony (his stalking-horse), whose head is held by Sheridan. The headband, inscribed 'Ich Dien', and holding the Prince's feathers, indicates the Prince of Wales. His eyes are covered by blinkers. Under his fore-feet are two papers: 'Addresses from Edinburgh Glasgow Borough of Southwark' and 'City of London Vote of Thanks to Mr Pitt . . . 267'. "The title is spaced to indicate the persons depicted. In a room in Carlton House the 'Greeks', or Foxites, superintend the obeisance of the Persians' or Grenvilles before the 'rising Sun' of the Prince of Wales. On the extreme left stands Thurlow ('Achitophel'), turning his back on the others with a morose frown. He is bearded, and wears old-fashioned dress with a tie-wig. In his pocket is a paper: 'Secret Advice to his R H No Respecter of Persons to invite Tag Rag & Bobtail to dine'. Next (left to right) stand Foxites: Norfolk, Windham, Fox (with a satisfied smile), and Sheridan who touches the shoulder of the kneeling Lord Grenville, saying, "lower my Lord". Next Grenville is the spectacled Marquis of Buckingham kneeling very low, and pressing down his son, Temple, who kneels immediately in front of the two brothers. Four others, all in back view (as are all the 'Persians' except Buckingham), and all with identical bag-wigs, kneel before the rays of a large sun. These rays are surmounted by the Prince's feathers and strike a solid mass of cloud above which are the (obscured) Royal Arms, supported on a motto: 'Auspicium [meli]oris Ævi'. "The Prince of Wales is seated in a magnificent dining-hall before a bare table. The Duke of Leinster (right) offers him across the table a dish of 'Potatoes from Leinster'; the Prince extends his arms to take them, but turns his head to look at the forbidding Thurlow, dressed as a doctor, who stands (left) on his right. Thurlow points authoritatively to the potatoes with the head of his cane, saying, "Take back the Irish Potatoes". The Prince says with a peevish expression: "If I must not have the roast Beef [the English Regency] let me have ye Potatoes Doctor I have paid for them". On the extreme right, behind Leinster, Sheridan, with a melancholy expression, tries to take a dish containing a sirloin from a beefeater, who says, "This belongs to my Master Sir." In the foreground (left) Weltje (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7509), dressed as a cook, stands looking at the Prince, his hands clasped in dismay, saying, "By Got now we sail not heb our Desert". Two colonnades of pillars recede in perspective behind the Prince; on the plinth of one is a relief of Tantalus vainly trying to drink from the vessel at his lips. In the foreground (centre) are two dogs coupled together, one is Burke, in spectacles, looking hungrily at the bare table, the other is Fox, turning his back on the table and straining away from Burke. The Prince's chair is surmounted by his coronet and feathers. "Between Fox and Surrey, Powys, the second violin, is seated on the ground, looking with an agonized expression (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6413) towards Fox, the first violin. From Fox's pocket hangs a paper: 'Irish Propositions set to music for the White Boys'. Burke is farther to the left, blowing his trumpet with a deeper scowl. Lord Derby has been displaced from his central position for Lord Sandwich, seated in an arm-chair, holding a roll inscribed 'Catches & Glees' with which he beats time, turning to the right where Stormont blows the French horn as before. Farther to the right Lord Carlisle, in profile to the left, plays the clarinet (or hautboys). Derby, standing between Burke and Sandwich, plays the pipe and tabor. Eden plays the Irish harp as before and in the same position, but at his feet is a squalling cat, watched contemptuously by a large dog whose collar is inscribed 'watch'. Another dog howls with its fore-paws on the open music-book inscribed 'Ballanamonioro'. On the extreme left, in 'profil perdu' to the left, Portland is seated at the harpsichord; his music is also '[B]allanamonioro'. In the foreground (left) is a fox, its collar inscribed 'Fox', standing on a kettledrum, its cloth decorated with the Cavendish arms and motto, 'Cavendo tutus', and snarling at an overturned side-drum decorated with the royal arms; this indicates Fox's attitude to the Crown and the support given to him by the Duchess of Devonshire. Other books of music, a cittern, &c, lie in the foreground. On a chimney-piece, behind Portland, is a bust, laurel-wreathed with a blank face, inscribed 'oντiς'; against it lean a lyre and a smiling mask. Two manuscripts hang down from the chimney-piece: 'Critique on the Rolliad' and 'Probationary Odes for the Laureateship'. These emblems signify the anonymity of the two famous political satires which went into several editions in 1785 after appearing in the 'Morning Herald'. On the back wall, above the heads of the performers, are (left to right) marrow-bones and cleavers, reminiscent of the bands of butchers who had supported Fox in the Westminster Election. Next is a framed picture: Fox beating a tambourine, North playing a clarinet to which dance performing dogs and a hare. In the centre is an oval bust portrait of the Prince of Wales, the frame inscribed 'Auspicium melioris Ævi' (see British Museum Satires No. 6771). The third depicts Fox leading a performing bear, while a man, resembling a bearded Jew, plays a hurdy-gurdy. On the extreme right a legal wig is hung above a set of bagpipes; it is inscribed 'New Wig' [Whig] with the letters 'C.P'; on the bag are the letters 'PC', on one of the pipes '1745'. "Parodied by, or a parody of, British Museum Satires No. 7277. A design based on the tickets of admission to Westminster Hall, which bore the name and arms of Sir Peter Burrell, Deputy Great Chamberlain; [in right of his wife, Lady Priscilla Bertie, who with her sister was jointly hereditary Great Chamberlain of England] in the centre of the escutcheon were the arms of his wife: three battering-rams placed horizontally. The crest was an embowed arm holding an olive-branch. In place of the rams' heads of the battering-rams are the heads, in profile to the left, of Burke, frowning, of Fox, smiling, and of Francis with a fixed stare. The arm of the crest holds a scourge whose lashes terminate in scorpions and is inscribed 'Lex Parliamenti omnipotens'. Beneath the escutcheon is a motto on a scroll: 'Sub libertate Tyran' [sic] which replaces the original motto: 'Sub Libertate Quietem'. Two supporters have been added: Dexter, a weeping judge, his cap inscribed 'Common Law', holds a scroll whose words are scored through: '[Magna] Charta Judicium Parium aut Lex Terrae'. Sinister, Justice, looking up in terror at the scourge by which she is threatened, and dropping her scales. Beneath the escutcheon is a view in miniature of Westminster Hall showing clearly the Managers' box (left), in which Fox stands, violently declaiming; Burke sits next him frowning. A document inscribed 'First Article' hangs over the side of the box. The head of Hastings, a good profile portrait, is turned towards Fox; on the right, are his three counsel in back view. Behind them are the heads of the peers, wearing hats, and on each side the Commons (left) and the ladies (right) in the peeresses' seats. At the far end of the hall the throne with the Queen's box and the Prince of Wales s box are freely sketched. The foreground is decorated by branches of leaves (? olive) and an open book inscribed 'From Envy Hatred & Malice and all Uncharitableness Good Lord deliver us.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"Five members of the Opposition watch with admiring surprise 'Ombres Chinoises': figures whose shadows are thrown on a sheet or screen, the scene enclosed in a circle: three fat Dutchmen seated on the sea advance directly towards the spectators. On the shoulders of each sits a French sansculotte soldier, cadaverous and sinister; the central figure wears a cocked hat from which project cannon or trench-mortars, he holds a tricolour flag. The others wear bonnets-rouges; one (left) blows a trumpet, the other (right) beats a drum. The Dutchmen are impassively smoking pipes, two wear French cockades; from the hips of each project the mouths of cannon. The light background of the circle stands out on a tinted ground; above it is a scroll, apparently issuing from the mouth of the trumpet: 'Terror the Order of the Day'. Only the heads and shoulders of the spectators are visible, all in back view except that of Lansdowne on the extreme right, who says "Astonishing effect". The others (left to right) are Fox, looking through a glass as in British Museum Satires No. 8641, Sheridan, Stanhope, and a bishop identified as Watson of Llandaff. With a look of astonishment. she looks behind her at the ghost of Samuel Johnson in a night shirt who with his right hand points to the portraits of James Boswell and Sir John Hawkins on the wall and in his left hand holds a money purse. Another portrait on the far right depicts John Courtenay with a pen in his hand looking toward a bust of Prisian. On her desk is a letter "D Johnson ... Letters Dear Lady", implying that she has been concoting Johnson's letters to her. "Stanhope stands in his library, declaiming; he has just risen from his chair and holds his pen in his raised right hand, his left rests on a small table (right) covered with documents. He wears a cocked hat; his leanness is caricatured, his legs being of exaggerated thinness. His right foot rests on a large volume, 'Cocker's Arithmetic'. Under his left hand are 'Observations upon Mr Pitts Plan' and 'M . . of Mr Sheridan's Speech - I prefer the Noble Lord['s] Plan to th[at] of the Minister less visionary'. "In the foreground are Wellington and Peel as grave-diggers; Eldon, a stout elderly Hamlet wearing a cloak, stands (left) holding a skull, and saying: "Here's fine revolution and [sic] we had the trick to see it." Wellington stands in a grave, in profile to the left, wielding a pickaxe. His shirt-sleeves are rolled up, he wears a small cap; his military coat, cocked hat, and sword lie beside him. He says to Peel: 'Come take off the Orange Peel [see British Museum Satires No. 15683] quickly, I can't get on without you.' Peel, wearing garments of green slashed with orange, is about to take off an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15701). He answers 'I'll change my self before you can say Jack Robinson.' On the extreme right are the posterior and left leg of George IV (as in British Museum Satires No. 12803) who is scurrying off to the right, beside a tombstone which serves as sign-post and is inscribed 'To Hanover' [see British Museum Satires No. 15704]. In the middle distance (right) is the funeral procession, the coffin carried by four bearers with a pall inscribed 'Constitution 1829'. B.), who covers his face with a despairing gesture, exclaiming 'Oh! dear! Oh! dear, what will become of Mrs Bull, & all my little Bulls?-- We shall have nothing but the Popes Bulls. Oh my--' Behind are (left) St. Paul's and (right) York Minster. The pediment of the former is inscribed 'St Pauls now St Patricks' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11898]. On the steps, about to enter, is the Pope, rollicking indecently between a monk (left) and O'Connell (right) in wig and gown. The Pope: 'Och! my darling you have done the job. fal lal la!!' "The left and wider portion of the design represents 'England', the right portion 'France'; two posts and the corners of two buildings meet along the dividing line. From each post a horizontal beam projects to support a signboard, in each case that of a crown. In England this is in place, and has the inscription 'Good Entertainment for Man & Horse'; two Frenchmen standing on the opposite side are pulling at the English sign with ropes. They stand on the sign of the (French) crown which has already been cut down. They are assisted by Tom Paine who sits astride the horizontal bar to saw it through, but leaves his saw in the wood to stare in terror at a large bill, posted on the house from which the sign projects, and inscribed: 'Association for preserving Liberty & Property against Republicans and Levellers Resolved. . . '. He exclaims, "Here's a Stop to my Levelling." He is dressed in a slovenly manner and from his pocket protrude 'D Priestley Sermon' (see British Museum Satires No. 7887, &c.) and 'Rights of Man' (see British Museum Satires Nos. 7867, 8137, &c). On the ground, and opposite the door of the Crown Inn, stand a sailor (left) and a soldier (right) who clasp hands; the sailor waves his hat, crying, "for our King and"; the soldier, who holds a musket, the butt end resting on the ground, adds "Country". Against the door is pasted a bill headed 'Proclamation' (see British Museum Satires No. 8095), and ending 'God save the King'. The rays of the sun dispel some dark clouds which surround Paine. In the background is a castle, flying a British flag, and the masts of ships. In front of them is a wall on which stands a small defiant British Lion. In France the sky is covered with heavy clouds. On the building are three large placards: [1] 'Liberté & Egalité Ca ira', [2] 'Mr Fox's Speech to the Vig Club Anglois', [3] 'Memorial of Cit Thos Paine to the Nation[al] Conven[tion]'. Beside the two men who pull at the English crown is a third Frenchman, a ragged sansculotte, who holds a pike on which is a head; he stands astride a recently decapitated body, shouting, "Vive la Nation." "The interior of a hall intended for the French National Assembly. On the extreme left a large tub raised from the ground serves as tribune, its right half only being visible; from this leans a grotesquely caricatured and foppish Frenchman, blowing a trumpet with a force which distends his cheeks. In his right hand are leading-strings supporting a lean youth who stands on the floor leaning forward, a firebrand in his left hand, an electrical rod in his right. From the trumpet of François (de Neufchâteau) issue the words 'Voici un beau Garçon le fils de Dr Pr***tly grand Democrat &c.' Young Priestley addresses the members who are seated on the extreme right under a gallery, travestied as men with the heads of animals (an ass, two frogs, an owl, a boar); he says, "Papa sends me to you for Improvement I will bear true Allegiance &c." They put their fingers to his electrical rod, which emits sparks. This rod is connected by a chain with a large jar inscribed 'Phlogiston from Hackney College'. "A party of clumsy Dutch burghers with frogs' heads advances through very shallow water to attack a ramshackle thatched booth, one corner of which is visible on the extreme right; from it hangs a sign with the half length portrait of a man in armour ... Heads of the members of the new ministry stand on wig blocks in a barber's shop. The barber washes his hands in a bowl attached to a double stand with the bewildered looking head of Lord North and the happily smiling one of Charles Fox on it. Behind them stand blocks with the heads of the Duke of Portland, Lords Cavendish, Stormont (David Murray), Carlisle, and Admiral Keppel. Samuel House, a well known Fox supporter, and a plebeian politician, is seated, with his tankard in his hand, in a chair placed next to Keppel's head. The head of Burke behind him wears an unhappy expression, perhaps at the distance between him and the other cabinet members. Behind the barber on the floor lie the discarded heads of former ministers, the Duke of Grafton, Lord Shelburne, and Dundas. Above on the wall are mirror images of Charles I and Cromwell, ready to embrace each other. "A new Map of Great Britain and Ireland" above the fireplace is torn between Ireland and the British Isle on which the name 'England' is conspicously absent below Scotland and Wales

"Mrs. Abington stands facing three quarters to the right dressed as Scrub in Farquhar's 'Beaux' Stratagem', with her hair in tightly curled ringlets (resembling the wig worn by Weston in the part). Her hand is in the pocket of a long, old-fashioned coat worn over an apron. On the wall behind her head is a bust of Farquhar, scowling down at her, disgusted to see a woman play the part. On each side is a picture: on the left the head and shoulders of a man calling "Murder Murder", the frame is inscribed, "Mr Weston in ye part of Scrub". On the right a woman emerges from the funnel of a bottle, as the Bottle Imp. "The gate of Bedford House (Bedford Square) with the double doors sufficiently open to show a man descending the steps of the house carrying a sack of plunder. On one side of the gate sits the Duke of Bedford, dressed as a jockey and seated on a saddle supported by trestles; he looks down, his face is concealed by his cap, his arms are folded. At his feet is a paper: 'Motion for Peace with France'. On the opposite side sits a sansculotte astride a pile of plunder topped by a bundle of 'Title De[eds] of Estates in -'. His feet rest on money-bags and on a ducal coronet. He wears a bonnet-rouge and grasps a bag inscribed '£1000', looking towards the Duke. A horizontal beam or 'Bedford Level' touches both their heads, from its centre rises an upright against which hangs a plumb-line, exactly vertical. On each gate-post is a double-headed Sphinx (cf. "A number of men with asses' heads sit round a table signing a petition. They are upon a platform in a ramshackle room; a ladder rests against its left corner; on the ladder appear the head and shoulders of Fox in back view; he holds strings attached to the noses of the asses. The ass seated at the head of the table (left) hands down to him a 'Petition to the House of Commons for Delay [signed] Ign[or]amus'. An ass holds a long document, the 'Commercial Treaty with France', which falls across the table on to the ground; on his right shoulder an ass rests his head; another on the left sleeps with his head resting on a pile of books on the table. A spectacled ass writes busily; next him, at the end of the table (right), an ass leans back asleep. The nose of a braying ass appears through a door on the extreme right. Behind the table an ass places a notice on the wall: 'Chamber of Commerce at a Meeting held the 10th of February Resolved'. This partly covers another bill: 'Chamber [of] Commerce at a Meeting 9th Decr 1786 Resolv[ed]'. On a shelf (left) a figure of Mercury with a wooden leg dances, flourishing a caduceus; the right hand is broken off; behind it part of a vase is visible inscribed 'Wedgwood'. "Erskine, dressed as an officer of the Inns of Court Volunteers, kneels on one knee to receive spurs from Sir James Mansfield, in legal wig and gown, who stands over him, his sword held vertically. Erskine's knee rests on a bulky brief: 'The King v. Hardy Brief for Def[ence]'; he says: "Henceforth I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance [? and abjure] traiterous . . . (the words obscured by his plumed helmet)". In the foreground two couples of privates or N.C.O.s (left and right) walk off scowling suspiciously over their shoulders at the investiture. The design is framed by two arches of the cloister of the Temple Church. Through one (left) is seen the body of the church: three (sculptured) recumbent Knights Templars raise themselves from their tombs to gaze in horror at the scene. All five volunteers wear plumed helmets and epaulets. The two on the left carry, one a pike, the other a bayoneted musket, both directed towards the new knight. "Fox and his party (three quarter length) surround a Twelfth Night cake which Weltje was about to cut into portions. The cause of a sudden check to this proceeding is indicated by a broad ray of light (which strikes the cake and the bystanders) and by a scroll: 'The King shall enjoy his own again'. Weltje stands on the left, his arms extended towards the scroll, saying, "Den by Got we sail heb no Cake"; he drops his knife. He and Sheridan are the most agitated of the party: Sheridan with a face of despair looks up, saying, '"Now our Ruin is complete" School for Scandal'. (He is Joseph Surface as in British Museum Satires No. 7510, &c; the actual words are "Tis now complete!') Fox stands disconsolately, his hands in his pockets, his back to the ray. Burke (right), his arms folded, scowls up at the ray. Behind these three Stormont, Loughborough, and Sandwich (on the extreme right) regard it with less pronounced despair. Portland stands behind the cake, frowning fixedly. The centre of the cake is ornamented with the Prince of Wales's coronet and feathers (as are Weltje's buttons); on the centre feather is poised a crown. The cake has been marked in sections where it is to be cut, these are inscribed 'Ist Lord Admy' [Sandwich had been considered for the post and also for that of Ambassador to France], 'Secrety State foreign' [Fox], 'Secrety State home' [Stormont], 'Paymar Genl' [Burke], 'Ist Comm Board Control', and 'Treas Navy' (Sheridan's arm extends across this, the place intended for him, pending a transfer to the Chancellorship of the Exchequer, Sir G. "Eight dissenting ministers, headed by Dr. Abraham-Rees, approach the King with an address whose inscription is the only title; it continues: 'in & about the Cities of London & Westmr We your Majesty s loyal and faithful...' Rees, a bulky 'Encyclopedia' in his coat-pocket, puts one foot on a step leading to a doorway within which are visible the legs of the seated King, and his right. hand, which rests on a wall-box from which issues a paper: 'Bramah Patent Water [C]losets'. Just outside the door, holding his long wand of office, Salisbury, the Lord Chamberlain (actually Dartmouth, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10283A), stands stiffly looking over the heads of the Addressers, who are ushered in by a beef-eater on the extreme left. Rees is scarcely caricatured except for a grotesque stalk-like neck which issues absurdly from a wide coat-collar. Behind him is Theophilus Lindsey, holding his hat and a big umbrella. Most of the other six are probably portraits, but two may be generalized sectaries with lank hair. All have sour, apprehensive expressions. A quasi-Tudor window suggests St. James's Palace. "Within a handsome room, whose roof is supported by Corinthian columns, is a medley of playing-cards: the whole suit of clubs headed by the king and queen. On the extreme right is the knave (Fox), who is being kicked out of the door by the toe of the king which protrudes beyond the lower right corner of the card. Fox looks alarmed, saying, "Now I must associate". The queen holds a shield on which are the arms of the City of London. A banner emerging from the cards is inscribed: 'Associations for preserving Liberty & Property against Republicans & Levellers'. Above the door (right) is a picture: 'Plan of a new Constitution'; a house of cards is being demolished by a blast inscribed 'Loyalty' which issues from a head in the upper left corner; the topmost (but dislodged) card is the knave of clubs. "Whitbread, his body, limbs, and head covered by tubs of varying shapes and sizes, raises a drayman's pole, to which is attached a hooked chain to smite the drooping head of a thistle with the features of Melville, his profile facing the ground; the flower forms a spiky coronet. The stem is inscribed 'Me quisque impune lacerrit' (replacing the 'nemo me impune ...' of the motto of the Order of the Thistle). Whitbread's heavy pole is 'Tenth Report'. The tub on his body is 'Wormwood', those on his legs are 'Quashee' [Quassia] and 'Aloes' (allegations of adulteration against his beer, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10574). He tramples on torn papers: 'Trial by Peers' and 'Magna Charta'. Another torn paper is 'Criminal Prosecution by the Atty General'. A large intact paper is: 'New Law Inquisition Committees Torture Question Thumb Screw Peine forte [et dure]'. On the right is a ruinous ale-house, before the door of which Fox sits astride on a large cask. He holds a big frothing tankard and watches Whitbread with cynical satisfaction. The head of the cask is inscribed 'Old Hollan[ds] For Ullage Cas[k] defict . . . Millions.' (An allusion to his father, Lord Holland, as the 'public defaulter of unaccounted millions', a gibe recurring over a long period, referring to the City Petition of 1769, cf. British Museum Satires No. 9739, &c.) Beside him a man in Highland dress, resembling Lauderdale, leans against the building, watching the outrage with frank pleasure. From a broken first-floor window leans Wilberforce, a sour sectary in a steeple-crowned hat inscribed 'Puritanism'. His hands are clasped; he says: "I say. Amen to all Cantwell." Above his head is a placard: 'Hymns & Spiritual Songs on the Slave Trade by St Wilber.' From his window projects a sign-board with a bust profile portrait of St. Vincent, hunch-backed and wearing a ribbon, inscribed 'System of Terror' and 'Hoc Signo non Vincent.' [Parodying the often-quoted in 'hoc signo vinces', the inscription on a vision of a fiery cross, to which legend attributed the conversion of Constantine. The 'non' is added inconspicuously with a caret.] On the building is a torn placard: 'performed The Tragedy Timon of [Athens] Lord Timon Mr Melville Lucullus a false friend & Kinsman Mr Kinhard [Kinnaird] little more than Kin and less than kind Scotch Reel &c.' "A comet traverses the design diagonally and downwards from right to left across an aquatinted background; the head is that of the Prince Wales in a star, the tail contains the heads of his disappointed followers. This broadens as it recedes from the head; immediately after the Prince is the head of Sheridan, with a gloomy expression. Behind him are Fox, with a melancholy smile, and Portland, looking angry. After them comes the wig in back view of Lord Loughborough (see British Museum Satire No. 6796). Next come Stormont and (in 'profil perdu') North. They are followed by the Duke of Queensberry (one of the 'rats') holding up a quizzing-glass and Powys with his habitual melancholy scowl. Behind them are Lord Lothian (another 'rat'), Burke, with an angry frown, and the Duke of Norfolk. Between Norfolk and Queensberry is the 'profil perdu' of Derby. "Letters on the design refer to an 'Explanation' etched below the title. A scene on the stage of a theatre symbolizes Westminster Hall. In the foreground a large cauldron is sinking through a rectangular opening in the floor. It is inscribed 'A. \ Exit in Fumo', explained as 'The Managers Cauldron'. From it rises a dense mass of dark smoke which divides into two curving branches, one on each side of a brightly irradiated bust of Hastings. The bust looks towards the Managers' box (right) and stands on a large rectangular pedestal inscribed: 'Virtus repulsæ \ nescia sordidæ \ incontaminatis \ fulget honoribus'. The cauldron is filled with burning documents, the origin of the smoke, inscribed, respectively: 'Charge', 'Charge Presents', 'Charge of Oppression', 'Charge of Cruelty', 'Charge of Extortion', 'Charge of Peculation in Contracts', 'Torture'. These are: 'B Ingredients mix'd up by the Managers to blacken C a character out of their reach'. Standing within another rectangular opening in the floor is Burke in profile to the left, gesticulating furiously, a paint-brush in his raised right hand, a document, 'more Ingredients', clasped in his left hand. Above the bust are two projecting beams, each supported by an angel (as in Westminster Hall), wearing a judge's wig and gown with a scroll issuing from the mouth. The figure on the left is Thurlow, looking calmly down, his hand on his breast and saying: "not black upon my Honour." The other is Loughborough, his head turned away, showing the back of his wig only (cf. BMSat 6796), and saying: "Black upon my Honour". They are: 'K a great Critic in a high Situation, who has paid close Attention. L another great Critic, not quite so good a Judge, giving his Opinion on the other Side'. On the right is a stage-box, representing the Managers' box. From it Fox, wearing a bag-wig, leans forward, looking excitedly and near-sightedly through his glass, his hand outstretched as if to restrain Burke. Behind him is the quasi-imbecile profile of Sir James Erskine (see BMSat 7152) looking over his shoulder. On the extreme right are the backs of the heads and shoulders of two Managers who are leaving the box. Below (right) a profile looks gloomily towards the stage. Fox is 'E Another Manager a great Actor very anxious about the fate of the Farce'. The others are 'eee Other Managers very well dress 'd [cf. BMSat 7309] but not very capital performers some of them tired of acting'. Just outside the box is the profile head of Francis, his baleful stare (as in BMSat 7292, &c.) fixed on the bust. He is: 'F The Prompter, no Character in ye farce but very useful behind the Scenes.' The outside of the box ('G The Managers Box') is traversed by the winding track of a snail, beginning in '1787' and meandering past '1788', '1789', '1790', '1791', '1792', '1793', '1794', the snail's head touching '1795'. A rat has gnawed a hole in the front of the box, though which he peers; in his mouth is a ticket: 'Permit the Bearer to Pass & Repass 1787 renew'd 1795', on which are indicated the arms of Sir Peter Burrell (on all tickets of admission, cf. BMSat 7276). Above the design is a stage curtain with the usual motto, 'Veluti in Speculum'. Below the stage (right) appear, in an oblong aperture fringed with flames ('H. a Court below to which the Managers retire upon quitting the Stage.'), the head and hands of a corpse-like Devil holding a pitchfork which points directly to the Managers' box. He is 'I Usher of the Mack Rod there'. He says: "By the pricking of my Thumbs, Something wicked, this Way comes." "A view of the left side of the stage, including part of a stage box on the extreme left. From this leans a figure of Folly wearing a fool's cap with ass's ears, clapping his hands. Within the shadow of the box is the head of a staring owl (cf. British Museum Satires No. 5363). A frieze of dancing dogs (cf. British Museum Satires No. 16715) decorates the lower part of the box; above is a grinning mask flanked by dogs' heads. The capital of the Corinthian pilaster that flanks the stage is formed of dogs' heads. At its foot is a figure of Thalia covering her face with her hands. At the base of her pedestal is an open book: 'The Caravan or the Driver and his Dog a Farce.' This lies on and obscures another: 'The Critic or Tragedy rehearsed'. "Catherine II places in its niche the bust of Fox which is being hauled into position by a rope over a pulley held by a Russian bear, who crouches (right) beside the steps on which the Empress stands. She is in back view, very stout, wearing ermine-trimmed robes with a laurel wreath in place of the usual crown. On each side of the bust is a larger alcove for whole length statues of 'ΔΕΜΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ' and 'M.T. CICERO'. These statues are stepping down from their niches, looking apprehensively at Fox. Their eyes have the blankness of sculpture, but their faces express indignant alarm. Cicero holds a scroll: 'In Cata[linam]'. Fox's head is that of life rather than of sculpture. Above it is an oval picture or bas-relief inscribed 'Regulus'; a number of men are imprisoning a victim in a large cask lined with spikes. Demosthenes (left) steps down from his niche on to one of two large packing-cases inscribed 'Houghton Collection For The Emp[ress of] Russia' and 'Hough . . .' (Catherine having bought pictures from the collection of Sir Robert Walpole). Beside them stands a bust of Paul Jones, wearing a cocked hat and looking up at Fox with a sinister glare. Cicero steps down on to the arm of the Imperial throne, which is formed by the neck of a vulture; the legs of the throne are those of a bird of prey. On its seat lies a scroll inscribed: 'Memorial Ambassador extraordinary Sheweth That your Memorialists are attached to your Majesty and have opposed the Armament, divided against the Minister [ ? leaving him in a] small Majority, rai[led] against the Balance [of] Power, chalked up [on] the Walls in capital [letters] No Russian War.' (The right edge of the document is cut off by the margin of the design, leaving some of the words to be supplied by the reader.) Under the chair lies a dog. Burke kneels at her feet, head bent down, supporting himself on his left hand; his right hand is on his breast; he frowns, his spectacles are on his forehead. He is between Sheridan and Fox. "A complicated design: advocates for religious toleration in a church, the pulpit occupied by Priestley, Price, and Lindsey. The central figure is Price, to whom the clerk standing below has passed up in a cleft stick a paper inscribed: 'The Prayers of this Congregation are desired for the Success of the patriot Members of the national Assembly now sitting in France'. Price takes the paper, and, raising his left hand sanctimoniously, says: "And now Let us fervently pray for the Abolition of all unlimited and limit[ed] Monarchy, for the Annihilation of all ecclesiastical Revenues and Endowments, for the Extinction of all Orders of Nobility and all rank and Subordination in civil Society and that Anarchy and Disorder may by our pious Endeavours prevail throughout the Universe - See my Sermon on the Anniversary of the Revolution" (see BMSat 7629, &c). Priestley leans over the left edge of the pulpit, his right arm raised; flames issuing from his mouth expand into four columns of smoke inscribed respectively 'Atheism' (smaller than the others), 'Deism', 'Socinianism', 'Arianism'. This blast strikes an angel carrying a cross; he flies out of a window (left), looking over his shoulder at Priestley with an expression of horror. Through the window is also seen a church steeple, being pulled down by a rope. Seated in a pew below is Fox (left) who looks up at the preacher, smiling; a similar column of smoke issues from his mouth and rises towards Priestley, inscribed 'Hear hear hear'. Lindsey leans over the right side of the pulpit, holding out 'A Table of the Thirty nine Articles' in a frame, this he tears to pieces. The back of the pulpit, above Price's head, is ornamented with an inverted and irradiated triangle containing the letters 'PPL', the initials of the three preachers. Above it is suspended a marquess's coronet with Lord Lansdowne's beehive crest. On the sounding-board are (left) two books: 'Priestley on civil Government' and 'Price on civil Liberty'. Beside them hangs from the roof a striped flag inscribed 'America' (Price's 'Observations on civil liberty . . .' (1776) had encouraged the Declaration of Independence, see BMSat 5644). In front of the pulpit the central figure is an exciseman standing with his back to the pulpit and looking over his shoulder at Stanhope with a smile. An ink-bottle is attached to his coat, under his arm is a book inscribed 'Excise'. His folded hands rest on the head of a cane, the tip of which is in a chalice which stands at his feet. Under his foot is a paper: 'Order for the Ministration of the holy Communion'. He is gauging a Communion cup, and is evidently Thomas Paine. Next him (right) in back view, kneeling, is a bishop, with enormous lawn sleeves; he is identified by Miss Banks as Edward Law, Bishop of Carlisle, but an open book in front of him is inscribed 'Watson Tracts', suggesting that he is Watson of Llandaff, cf. BMSat 7419. In the foreground on the left a kneeling man is flinging out the contents of an open chest on which are a bishop's escutcheon, and a female figure with a cross and chalice, probably representing religion. He throws out a large book: 'The Book of Common Prayer' to join a book of 'Homilies'. Beside this lie a mitre, a crozier, a chalice, a communion plate with bread at which rats are nibbling, a paper: 'The Communion of Saints, &c.' Looking over the shoulder of this despoiler of the Church is a bearded Jew, his hands raised in admiration, saying, "O vat fine plaat I vil give you de Monies for it Sar." On the right and in profile to the left sits a soldier, with the lank hair and upward gaze of the enthusiast; he holds his sabre by the scabbard. In his right hand is a steeple-crowned hat. Behind him sits a shadowy worshipper, full face, with upturned head and clasped hands. In the foreground on the extreme right a beadle is seated on the floor asleep. His hat is inscribed 'Oliver Condable St James'. Beside him are a dog and an open book: 'Killing no Murder a Sermon for the 30th of January'. Above the back of a pew on the extreme right is part of the back of a wig, identified as that of the Lord Mayor. A large mace is beside it, and a pillar surmounted by the Royal Arms: the lion is headless and in place of the crown is a puritan's steeple-crowned hat. Through a doorway inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctor[um]' is a three quarter length portrait in an oval frame of Oliver Cromwell. From a gallery in the upper right corner of the design, a ruffianly looking man leans over with a clenched fist, saying, "No Test no Bishops". "A design divided into two portions by a vertical line and a slanting line which diverges to the right from the vertical line forming with it an obtuse angle. On the left of this division are the Speaker and three members of the House of Commons; on the right the Chancellor and three peers. Only a small part of the Speaker and his chair are visible on the extreme left. Fox stands facing him, his right hand extended, his left on his hip, a scroll inscribed 'Consuetudo et Lex Parliamenti' issues from his mouth. Burke stands with his back to Fox, scowling with folded arms; his scroll is inscribed 'Tropes Figures and a long Speech'. Sheridan stands in back view, facing Burke and bending forward, his scroll is 'Speech all Point'. The figures on the right have similar attitudes to those on the left, only the extreme left of the Chancellor and Woolsack being visible. "Wilberforce, as a weathercock, stands with his right foot poised on a pinnacle at the point of intersection of the four points of the compass. He leans forward in profile to the right, both arms stretched out towards a bird which grasps a scroll resting on clouds: 'Peace and Fraternity with France'. The bird is half-dove, and holds an olive branch in its mouth, but the left leg is that of a bird of prey, and in its talons a dagger is clasped, while the left wing is fantastically webbed. Two papers issue from Wilberforce's coat-pocket: 'Charge agt Kimber' and 'Abolition of the Slave Trade'. From his back rises a vertical spike supporting the hat of a Roundhead, its brim inscribed 'Fanaticism, Puritanism'. On its crown sits a raven, shrieking at Wilberforce the word 'Kimber'. "Burke lies back asleep, but scowling, in profile to the left, his arms folded in an arm-chair whose seat is inscribed 'Otium cum Dignit[ate]'. The top of his head is on fire, and the smoke rising from it forms the base of the upper and larger part of the design. Immediately above his head: 'This royal Throne of Kings, this sceptred Isle This Earth of Majesty, this seat of Mars This fortress built by Nature for herself Against Infection and the hand of War This Nurse, this teeming Womb of royal Kings This England that was wont to conquer others Will make a shameful Conquest of itself Shakespeare'. The British lion stands as if supported on these lines; from his angry mouth issue the words: "I protest against Peace with a Regicide Directory Went: Fitzw." Their background is a rectangular altar, wreathed with oak leaves which forms a centre to the upper part of the design. It supports a scroll: 'Naval \ Victories \ East India \ Conquests \ &ca &ca.' Against its base is a scroll headed 'Basle' and signed 'Wyckham', the intermediate (illegible) text being scored through. Above the altar flies a dove, an olive-branch in its mouth, clutching a sealed 'Passport'. Behind and above the lion Britannia stands in back view, her discarded spear and shield beside her; she plays a fiddle, intent on a large music score: 'A new Opera \ Il Trattato \ di Pace \ Overture \ Rule Britan[nia scored through and replaced by] \ Ca Ira \ God save ye King [scored through and replaced by] The Marsellois Hymn.' The apex of the design is an Austrian grenadier, his cap decorated with the Habsburg eagle, playing a flute with melancholy fervour: 'To Arms to Arms my valiant Grenadiers.' On the left of the altar and facing Britannia and the lion stands a sansculotte, standing on a large map, one foot planted on 'Britain', the other on '[I]reland'. In his right hand is a pike bearing the head of Louis XVI (see British Museum Satires No. 8297, &c), in his left a large key labelled 'Belgium' and attached by a chain to his belt, in which is a dagger; his coat-pocket is inscribed 'Forced Loan'. He says: "I will retain what I have got and treat with you on fair Terms for what you have got". Behind him and on the extreme left stands a creature symbolizing the Dutch Republic, linked to the sansculotte by a chain round its spinal cord. It has the head of a frog wearing a bonnet-rouge, thin, spidery arms akimbo, the ribs, &c. of a skeleton (cf. British Museum Satires No. 8848), baggy breeches, and shrunken legs.
