"A stout stage-coachman, perhaps an amateur, holding a bowl, stands by the door of an inn, taking the chin of the very buxom landlady. He has a team-whip and wears a round hat and many-caped overcoat reaching to the feet. Above their heads swings the (pictorial) signboard: 'Widow Casey at the Sign of the Cock and Bottle' [in reversed characters]. Just within the door stands a young maidservant, smiling at the encounter. Above the door: 'Genteel Accomodations'. On the wall is a bill headed 'York Races'. "Large clusters of straw bonnets and hats hang from the ceiling of a room which is both show-room and work-room. A pretty shop-girl with a hat in each hand smiles at a lean ugly woman who wears a similar but ill-fitting hat, and whose complacent profile is reflected in a wall-mirror (left). A child with a rattle looks up at her. She (or he) wears frilled drawers to the ankle. A fat woman wearing a bonnet sits looking up admiringly. A cat sits on a chair. Behind, six pretty girls are seated at a table making bonnets. An ugly elderly man peers in through the window, using an eye-glass. On the wall is a large placard: 'Mrs Flimsy's Fashionable Warehouse The greatest Variety of Straw Hats & Bonnets made up in the most Elegant Taste. A large stock of Spanish Flemish Provincial Gipsey Cottage Woodland &c &c Adapted to shew every Feature to the best Advantage'. Below the title: 'Misery A La Mode. "Four designs on one plate. All have punning titles. [1] A young calf, led by a butcher, runs off, throwing the man to the ground. A dog barks, an amused woman watches from a casement window. Scrawled on the cottage wall is 'H Soak for ever.' 'Pluck', a butcher's term for edible offal, was then pugilistic slang (from c. 1785). [2] A fat market woman on a shaggy pony has a turkey tied by the legs to the back of her saddle. Unknown to her a dog drags at its neck. An amused man watches from behind a tree. [3] A pig is being driven with a three-cornered yoke over its head. A man rides beside it; the horse puts a hind-leg over the animal's back so that the pastern is caught under the yoke. [4] A boy drags forward a bad-tempered pig by a cord tied to its hind-leg. A youth plies a whip, a dog barks. Beside them is a signpost: 'To Rumford'. "The interior of an apothecary's room: jars on shelves; a counter with drawers, pestle and mortar, flasks, &c. A bust of Galen stands on the lintel of the door (right). An alarmed undergraduate in cap and gown stands clasping his stomach. The doctor faces him triumphantly, with raised arms and holding a pill-box. His man, who wears an apron, walks off with a large box inscribed 'Anti-Fibbibus'. The (prose) inscription below the title relates that a 'College Wag' called on a 'travelling Empiric' and asked to be cured of a bad memory, and a habit of lying. He is cured by the 'gilded pill called - Pillula Memoria - Anti Fibbibus!!' The youth complains that he is poisoned with Asafœtida, the doctor answers that he speaks the truth and will never forget the medicine, so is cured."--British Museum online catalogue

"George III (l.), just risen from the throne, kicks Grenville from the presence, holding him by the pigtail, and raising the sceptre to smite. Other members of the Ministry flee in confusion, their gestures showing that they also have been kicked. The Kings head, as a sign of respect, is hidden by a pillar in heavy shadow which supports the voluminous canopy over the throne, itself in full light. A large label floats from the King: " - what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you! - what you thought I was like little-Boney & would turn Turk, or any thing? - but if You have no Faith or Conscience - I have!! - ay, & a little Old Protestant Spunk too! - So Out with you all!! - out! - with all your Broad-bottom'd- Popish Plots!!! - Out with you - out! - out! - out!" Grenville wears peer's robes, which fly back, exposing his heavy posteriors (cf. BMSat 10530) to the King's toe. He drops a long scroll: 'Catholic Bill - for bringing the Papists into Power & supporting the Broad bottom Jesuits in their Places for securing the Papists in commanding of the Army & Navy & all the Public offices - .' This tears as it floats over the shoulder of Howick, the mover of the Bill. Grenville is propelled against the massive Ellenborough, who hurries forward with a savage backward glare. The spectacled Buckingham looks up at his brother in dismay. Temple, huge and globular, waddles off, feeling his damaged back. In front of him, Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), slinks off stooping low. In the foreground Petty and Erskine lie on their backs, legs in the air, both in their gowns, Erskine having dropped the Purse of the Great Seal. Behind the nearer figures are (l. to r.): Windham, Moira with both arms raised, and Lauderdale, looking to the left.; next, Sidmouth in full flight, and on the extreme right. a head identified by Miss Banks as Fitzpatrick, but resembling Gillray's Adair. On the back of the throne within a wreath: 'G 3d/ R.' On its r., and on the extreme left., is a stool which supports a cushion on which rest a large 'Bible' and a crown. "An elegant schoolmistress in a neat parlour addresses two visitors, a fat and over-dressed farmer's wife with a daughter of about fifteen, similarly dressed and resembling her mother. On the right is a piano with open music, and a chair on which is propped a needlework picture of Charlotte mourning under a weeping willow, at a tomb with an urn inscribed 'Werter'. The governess holds in her hand a card: 'Terms of B[on] Tons School'; she points to the picture, saying, "You would perhaps like the Young Lady to work something in silks Madam! there is a pretty subject, Charlotte at the Tomb of Werter". The visitor exclaims: "A very pretty piece I pertest! my Dater has a Genii for Drawing! Penelope my dear! you shall work Charlotte at the Tub of Water". The girl, delighted, answers: "La Mother! A buxom maidservant with an alluring glance shows a handsome young plumber that the tap over the sink (left) needs renewing, since the water splashes widely. He carries a coil of lead piping, a new tap, tools, and a ladle for melting lead. Behind them (right) an irate old man wearing a dressing-gown advances upon the unconscious pair.
