"Uncle Toby (right) marches from right to left, a crutch under his left arm, pointing with his right crutch towards the fortifications (left) built on the bowling green, where the 'Gate of St Nicolas' is flanked on each side by a jack-boot. In his left hand he holds the 'London Gazette'. Trim, holding up a pickaxe, marches in front of his master. He has a long pig-tail, and a pad is tied over his left knee. On the ground behind is a grenadier's cap. Behind Uncle Toby is the sentry-box, in it is pasted up the plan of a fortification. The background is a rough paling behind which are trees. Shandy Hall appears behind the Gate of St. Nicolas. Beneath the design is engraved, "What an honest triumph in my Uncle Toby's Eyes as he march'd to the Ramparts with the Gazette in his hand & Trim with a pickaxe ready to execute the Contents; what intense pleasure in his Eyes as he stood over the Corporal! A player, in profile to the right, holds up with exaggerated care a cue in front of a ball lying near the corner. He wears a long pigtail queue, on the back of his coat is a large ribbon bow or cockade to which a key is attached. A number of spectators stand round watching intently: of two behind the player, one resembles a footman. Two others stand behind the corner of the table, one wearing a hat like that of a coachman; two others stand on the right behind the table. They are probably all men-servants. The wall behind is papered or stencilled in a pattern of horizontal lines and spots. "Satire on Grand Tourists: scene outside an inn in France, with a sign reading "Poste Royale", where a young English gentleman, holding a copy of "[Lord] Chesterfield's Letters", arrives with his tutor. He is greeted by the smiling inkeeper wearing large wooden shoes stuffed with wool who holds out a menu; beside the innkeeper a positllion holding a whip climbs out of his large boots On the right, a fat servant carries two bottles of wine and four books; behind him another postillion drives the coach with two horses towards the right. In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. An image of a young Bacchus seated on a barrel has been chalked on the wall; a dog jumps up towards it. "An elderly country parson, in profile to the right, on a horse which rears almost vertically, he clasps the animal round the neck, and is seated on his hind-quarters, having lost his stirrups and slipped from the saddle. His whip flies through the air behind him, his coat-tails fly out, and the sheets of his sermon inscribed 'IOB' protrude from his pocket. A small dog (left) rushing towards the animal's hind-legs and barking furiously appears to have caused the 'symptoms of rearing'. The parish clerk, with two large volumes under his arm, beside the horse, looks over his right shoulder and stoops or runs to escape being trampled on. Trees and a church steeple are indicated in the background (right). "A stout, complacent-looking man rides a small horse in profile to the left. He has a very bad seat and is pulling hard on the curb; the animal puts down its head. A servant on a rough-looking pony canters behind him, carrying a basket of hay and a triangular box or package (perhaps his master's hat-box) under his left arm. The scene is a country road, with a signpost (left) pointing 'To Hackney, To Isling[ton'], and (down a turning on the right of the riders) to 'Shoredi[tch]'. Abstract:
A scene from Tristram Shandy in which Susannah stands holdings her nose with her right hand while in her left she holds a candle over the cradle where the swaddled infant Tristram lies with a plaster on his nose. She addressed the doctor with obvious fury, her mouth agape. On the left Dr. Slop raises his left fist at her while in his right he holds a cataplasm in a ladle, ready to fling at her. His hat lies at his feet, and his wig is ablaze. Obadiah stands behind him carrying in his hands a chamber pot and a bowl, a medicine bottle tucked under his arm. The two men stand before a screen. A servant on a rough-looking pony canters behind him, carrying a basket of hay and a triangular box or package (perhaps his master's hat-box) under his left arm. The scene is a country road, with a signpost (left) pointing 'To Hackney, To Isling[ton'], and (down a turning on the right of the riders) to 'Shoredi[tch]'. "An elderly country parson, in profile to the right, on a horse which rears almost vertically, he clasps the animal round the neck, and is seated on his hind-quarters, having lost his stirrups and slipped from the saddle. His whip flies through the air behind him, his coat-tails fly out, and the sheets of his sermon inscribed 'IOB' protrude from his pocket. A small dog (left) rushing towards the animal's hind-legs and barking furiously appears to have caused the 'symptoms of rearing'. The parish clerk, with two large volumes under his arm, beside the horse, looks over his right shoulder and stoops or runs to escape being trampled on. Abstract:
"Design in an oval. An old military officer with a wooden leg describes his campaigns to two cronies. He is seated in a chair (right) in profile to the left wearing regimentals and sword, his wig has a long loosely twisted pigtail queue; his wooden leg (right) projects horizontally from his chair. He holds a map or plan taken from the wall, and is showing it to a stout man sitting on his right, who looks at it through spectacles. The third man standing behind, his left arm on the back of the soldier's chair, looks over their shoulders at the map. At their feet a small dog lies asleep. Through the open door (left) a man is seen dancing along while he plays a fiddle."--British Museum online catalogue

"The left sheet of a three-plate composition, British Museum Satires Nos. 5925-7. Riders, probably in Hyde Park, looking with astonishment at an elderly lady (right) walking from left to right followed by a little black boy carrying her umbrella. She wears an enormous calash hood, see BMSat 5434, &c, and holds in her left hand a shepherdess's crook. Three men (left) ride side by side, from left to right, the nearest pulls on his reins, leaning back, the next looks at the lady through his spy-glass, the third, staring open-mouthed, lashes his horse. The horse of a stout man riding from right to left, immediately behind the lady, is rearing. In the foreground an old woman sits by the roadside with a sheaf of ballads or newspapers. "One corner of a billiard-table is visible, the rest being cut off by the right, margin of the print. A player, in profile to the right, holds up with exaggerated care a cue in front of a ball lying near the corner. He wears a long pigtail queue, on the back of his coat is a large ribbon bow or cockade to which a key is attached. A number of spectators stand round watching intently: of two behind the player, one resembles a footman. Two others stand behind the corner of the table, one wearing a hat like that of a coachman; two others stand on the right behind the table. They are probably all men-servants. The wall behind is papered or stencilled in a pattern of horizontal lines and spots. On it are a rack of cues, the "[Rules of the Ga]me [of Billia]rds", three framed pictures: (a horse-race, a duel, and an oval portrait) and what appears to be a satirical print."--British Museum online catalogue
