Glass stereographs of Frémont's Mariposa estate include exterior (and some interior) views of the Josephine, Mount Ophir, Oso, and Princeton mines; the Agua Fria, Bear Valley, Benton, and Oso mills; Guadelupe Valley, Mormon Bar, Stockton Creek, and Tower Rock; an Indian Camp in Bear Valley; and a railroad bridge at Hells Hollow. The first major series of outdoor photographs by Carleton Watkins, western photographer. Col. John C. Frémont hired Watkins to produce a series of photographs depicting Frémont's Mariposa estate and its assets. Frémont's mining estate, Las Mariposas, was situated near Bear Valley, California and included the gold mines of Princeton, Josephine, Pine Tree, Mount Ophir, and Mariposa., Negatives available, Glass stereographs and related material housed in 4 boxes., and Some stereographs captioned.

Abstract:
Mammoth-plate photographs of California, including views in Yosemite of Half Dome, North Dome, the Royal Arches, Washington Column, Cathedral Rock, the Cathedral Spires, Mount Broderick, Mount Starr King, Nevada Fall, the Bridal Veil, the Yosemite Falls, and panoramic views of the entire Yosemite Valley, from both Glacier Point and Inspiration Point. There are also views of San Francisco showing the harbour, of the New Almaden Mine, and one view of Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County
Description:
Carleton E. Watkins was a San Francisco photographer who worked both with official surveys and independently to photograph California, Nevada and Utah. In 1867 he served with Clarence King as the official photographer to the California Geological Survey, and in 1870 was the official photographer for King's Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel., Manuscript or letterpress captions on mounts, some with numbers. Additional titles supplied, when necessary, in brackets on mount versos., and Accompanied by a box list.

Sixteen albumen prints depicting a variety of locations and people in Southern California and Arizona. There are views of six missions, one of them identified as San Miguel, and three others probably the California missions San Buenaventura, San Luis Rey, and Santa Inés. Three views are of the Southern Pacific Railroad, including the Tehachapi Loop and the San Fernando tunnel; three more views are of buildings and a river landscape in Yuma, Arizona. Also depicted are Chinese women in San Francisco; a vineyard and winery in Pasadena; Indian huts at Sunny Slope, San Gabriel, California; and a Mexican family in Santa Barbara, California
