Abstract:
A zoological encyclopedia listing the names of the different animals, birds and insects arranged alphabetically, with anecdotes, poems and folkloric tales, but the most important part of this work is the description of the medicinal properties of the animals and their different organs. It is the most comprehensive zoological work in Arabic and a store-house of folk-lore and popular medicine. The author is Muḥammad ibn Mūsá al-Damīrī (1341?-1405), a Shafiite Egyptian scholar, from Cairo. He worked as a tailor, but then devoted himself to learning and scholarship and became a prominent scholar at al-Azʹhar. He also lived for a while in Mecca and Medina. al-Damīrī finished writing his book in the month of Rajab, 773 H (January/February, 1372). The book is in two versions: long and short. The present manuscript is the long version and according to a recent note on leaf 1a it was copied from a manuscript copied in 805 H (1402/1403). A collection of two treatises: 1. Kashf al-asrār ʻan ḥikam al-ṭuyūr wa-al-azhār "Unveiling of secrets on the sagacity of birds and flowers" (folios 1a-47a), a treatise on sufism, in the form of "maqāmah" genre, by ʻIzz al-Dīn ʻAbd al-Salām ibn Ghānim al-Maqdisī (died 1279? in Cairo), a ṣūfī author, preacher and poet. Copied in the middle of Jumādá al-ākhir (31 March, 1657). Name of copyist and place of copying not mentioned. 2. Naẓm "Muthallath Quṭrub" (folios 47b-52b), by Ibrāhīm ibn Sulaymān al-Azʹharī al-Ḥanafī, active 1688, a little known author (See Brockelmann: G II, 215; Suppl. I, 161: "al-Manẓūmah al-sannīyah fī bayān al-asmāʼ al-lughawīyah" [Illustrious poem presenting the linguistic nouns]). The treatise is a versification of "al-Muthallath" of Quṭrub (Muḥammad ibn al-Mustanīr, died 821 or 822, a well-known grammarian and philologist, from Baṣrah, Iraq), enumerating the trilateral homonyms in Arabic which have different meanings according to the three Arabic vowels (fatḥah, ḍammah, kasrah). Quṭrub was the first author to write on the "Muthallath" genre. Abstract:
Manuscript on medicine and pharmacology by Abū Saʻīd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Mutaṭabbib al-Maghribī, a little known physician and pharmacologist who seems to have lived in the 12th century. The name of the author is given as "Abū Saʻīd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Maghribī" in one of his medical/pharmacological manuscript works: "Kitāb fatʹḥ al-tadāwī min jamīʻ al-amrāḍ wa-al-shakāwī fī mufradāt al-ʻaqāqīr, [17--?]" which he dedicated to the Amīr Shams al-Dīn Abū ʻAbd Allāh Muḥammad Dhū al-Qarnayn ibn ʻAyn al-Dawlah, the son of Amīr Ghāzī who seems to be the Danishmendid ruler Dhū al-Qarnayn, d. 557 H/1162 CE (OCLC 244629229). In the printed editions with slightly different titles: "Taqwīm al-adwīyah al-mufradah, aw, al-Munjiḥ fī al-tadāwī min jamīʻ al-amrāḍ wa-al-shakāwī" as Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Saʻīd al-ʻAlāʼī (OCLC 785065773) and "Taqwīm al-adwīyah, aw, al-Munjiḥ fī al-tadāwī min ṣunūf al-amrāḍ wa-al-shakāwī" as Abī Saʻīd Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Saʻīd al-ʻAlāʼī al-Maghribī (OCLC 796221762). He was sold into slavery in approximately 1807 and transported to the United States. Raḥmat al-ummah fī ikhtilāf al-aimmah "Mercy of the nation in the differences of the scholars." A treatise on the different opinions and interpretations of leading Islamic law scholars pertaining to legal matters, by Muḥammad ibn ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʻUthmānī (active 1378), a Shāfiʻī Islamic law scholar, originally from Damascus (Syria) who became the Qāḍī (Chief Judge) of Ṣafad. Shams al-maʻārif al-kubrá (Larger Sun of knowledge), by Abū al-ʻAbbās Aḥmad ibn ʻAlī al-Būnī (died 1225), a well-known Ṣufī scholar from the city of Būnah (Bône), now ʻAnnābah (Annaba, Algeria), who died in Cairo. This work is designated "al-kubrá" (the larger) to distinguish it from the author's two other treatises: "al-wusṭá"́ (the middle) and "al-ṣughrá" (the smaller). It is also listed in the text under the title "Shams al-maʻārif wa-laṭāʼif al-ʻawārif" (Sun of knowledge and intricacies of diviners), a treatise on magic, alchemy, astrology, divination, Islamic occultism, the name of God (including 'al-Asmāʼ al-Ḥusná', the 99 beautiful names of God), the magical use of the Arabic Alphabet, and talismans. A treatise on Islamic law according to the Shāfiʻī tradition by Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Maḥallī (1389-1459), an Egyptian, Shāfiʻī, Qurʼān and Islamic law scholar, from Cairo (Egypt), being a commentary on "Minhāj al-Ṭālibīn" of al-Imām al-Nawawī (Yaḥyá ibn Sharaf, 1233-1277), a well-known and prolific scholar from the village of Nawá in Ḥawrān (Syria), an authority on the Hadith and Islamic law. On the magical qualities of the letters of the Arabic alphabet, their numerical values and their categorization into fire, air, water and earth letters, in Ottoman Turkish (folios1a-2a). 2. Talisman (folio 2a), in Arabic. The copyist (Tawakkulī Muṣṭafá) claims to have seen this talisman in the year 1162 Hijrī (1748/1749) and copied it in Jumād Thānī, 1175 Hijrī (1761/1762). 3. Miftāḥ Kitāb Sāmūr Hindī (Key to the book of the Indian Sāmūr" (folios 2b-22a), by Darwīsh Fatʹḥ Allāh Rūmī (could not be identified), in Ottoman Turkish, an elaborate work on numerology with magic squares. al-Mūjaz fī al-ṭibb, a compendium of medicine by Ibn al-Nafīs, Abū al-Ḥasan ʻAlāʼ al-Dīn ʻAlī ibn Abī al-Ḥazm al-Qurashī al-Mutaṭabbib (1210 or 1211-1288), an illustrious and prolific scholar of the 13th century and a prominent physician and a practical and experimental medical researcher who refused to accept the previous medical opinions of Greek and Muslim scholars (including Galen and Avicenna) without proof and to whom is attributed the discovery of the micro cardiovascular system. He was born in Damascus, Syria but lived and worked in Cairo, Egypt. He depended in his treatment of illnesses mostly on nutritious foods rather than medications. The present manuscript is an abridgement and explantion of Avicenna's al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb "Canon of medicine" (excluding the chapters on anatomy and physiology) based on his own observations and experimentations. al-Qanūn fī al-ṭibb, a comprehensive manuscript on Arabic medicine by al-Ḥusayn ibn ʻAlī ibn Sīnā (980-1037), commonly known by the Latinized version of his name Avicenna who was born near Bukhara in Persia (present-day Uzbekistan). Avicenna was the most famous and influential of the many Islamic scholars, scientists, and philosophers of the medieval world. He was foremost a physician but was also an astronomer, chemist, geologist, psychologist, philosopher, logician, mathematician, physicist, and poet. His al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb (Canon of medicine) became the authoritative reference on medicine in the Middle Ages, not only in the Islamic world but, in Latin translations, in Europe as well. Presented in this manuscript is the second half of al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb (from al-fann 11 "the 11th art" of the third book to the end of the fifth book). The whereabouts of the first part of the Canon are not known.The colophons indicate that the copy was copied in 1055 H (1645/1656) in the city of Shīrāz, Iran by Muḥammad Qulī al-Shīrāzī al-muʻallim. The manuscript was a gift of Harvey Cushing (1869-1939), a Yale-educated neurosurgeon, whose collection of rare medical books forms a key part of the Medical Historical Library in the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University
