Abstract:: Lying on his stomach, a giant Lord North appraises the ship Britannia which is heeling over by the shore, as he encourages the members of his cabinet to pillage it. Diminutive figures of Fox, Portland, possibly Stormont, and Burke, stand on his back holding large sacks of loot. To the right on the ground stands "Sir" Jeffery Dunstan, the popular "Mayor of Garratt," and used wig seller, saying, "Old Whigs and Sham Whigs."

Abstract:: William Petty, Lord Shelburne, braces himself against the door to the Treasury in order to resist the pull of the rope tied around his waist. He is helped by John Dunning dressed in legal wig and cloak. The four men attempting to remove Shelburne from the Treasury are, from left to right, Charles James Fox, intent on forming a new administration; Admiral Augustus Keppel and the 3rd Duke of Richmond, both members of the Shelburne administration but opposing Shelburne; and Edmund Burke, later paymaster-general in the Fox-North administration

Abstract:: Sir Thomas Rumbold is depicted vomiting his ill-gotten wealth into a chamber pot decorated with a thistle. Kneeling beside it and embracing the chamber pot is Henry Dundas, Lord Advocate of Scotland who oversaw the prosecution of Rumbold in 1782-3. Rumbold's ankles are chained to two weights signed "Sureties," a reference to restriction on his leaving the country before the case was dropped in 1783. He is supported by his son, Captain Rumbold of 1st Life Guards, dressed in his regimentals and wearing a gorget. Behind them, an Englishman gallops on an elephant saddled with an enormous bag signed "Roupees." An Indian sitting behind him is holding a tall parasol above his head

Abstract:: George III, submerged in water, his head and hands raised in supplication above the waves, is being pulled out by four men standing in "Victory's Boat." They are, from left to right, Admiral Keppel, Lord Shelburne, John Dunning, and the Duke of Richmond. A "Diving Bell" with a head of a judge, possibly Thurlow, is attached to the boat by another rope. Watching from the shore are Charles James Fox, with a fox's head, and Edmund Burke. Fox comments that "As maligrida [Shelburne] now does reign / all their labour is in vain," to which Burke adds, "if boreas was here he would much swell / and prevent the efects of the Diving Bell." 'Boreas,' the fictitious designer of this print is Lord North. The printmaker Twitcher is Lord Sandwich. The title alludes to the loss of the warship "Royal George" during repairs in Portsmouth in 1782

Abstract:: Lord North and Charles Fox stand bound together by a ribbon signed "Tie of interest" looped around their necks. North holds in his left hand a sheet of paper with the popular ballad, "Vicar of Bray," while Fox points to the list of his own "Debts of honour" (gambling debts). Playing cards and dice spread on the table are partially covered by the "Plan for disarming the I__h V____rs" (Irish Volunteers). A large sack inscribed "Budget" lies on the floor. Behind North hangs an oval bust portrait of him dressed as a cleric and inscribed "Vicar of Bray." Behind Fox is a similar portrait of him with a rope on his neck inscribed "Sergius Cataline." Above are three paintings showing, from left to right, two men hanging from a gibbet with the executioner's cart pulling away, the "State Vessel" blown down the "Stream of Corruption" by "Boreas" [North], and a fox running away with a goose in his mouth

Abstract:: A Spaniard using his sword as a walking stick and capering with satisfaction, leads a procession along a country road to a building inscribed "Inquisition." He is followed by a happy looking Frenchman who pulls George III on a rope tied around the King's neck and through a gate made from two vertical spears with a third one tied horizontally on top. A lion is falling down from it while the unicorn tries to balance itself and the crown. The King is followed by Lord Shelburne (William Petty), mimicking both the royal posture and dress, and holding a rolled document signed 'Preliminaries." Their orderly progress is watched by a lean, simply dressed man holding in his right hand a scourge with many lashes and the word "America" between them. Abstract:: Charles Fox, with a fox's head in a wig, tilts to one side a wheelbarrow in which Lord Shelburne (William Petty) lies on his back, his arms and legs uncomfortably outstretched. Above them, Lord North as Boreas among the clouds, directs a strong blast on Shelburne's face. The text below the title, "The Devil can't Stand against A Double force. Vide the Votes of H: C: on ye. 18. [i.e., 17th] of Feby 1783," refers to the first of the two votes that, following the new coalition between Fox and North, led to Shelburne's resignation on February 24, 1783

Abstract:: Two renowned quacks demonstrate the superiority of each other's experiments and inventions. On the left, Graham, a quack, fashionable doctor and visionary, stands on the glass insulators used in his experiments with electricity and placed on top of a podium in the form of an E.O.(gaming) table, a reference to the illegal gambling he patronized at his residence. He stradles a long tube signed, "Prime conductor / Gentle restorer / Largest in the world." Behind his table stand two gigantic porters employed at his establishment, named here "Gog" and "Magog." The placard around Gog's neck, "The Temple of Health & of Hymen," is an allusion to Graham's 'celestial bed' for cure of sterility. His opponent on the right side of the image, quack, conjurer and showman Katerfelto, crouches next to a cylindrical conductor signed, "Positively Charg'd." The trident inserted in the back end of the conductor touches a grindstone turned by the devil. Electric sparks shoot from its front end and from Katerfelto's right thumb and index finger. Some sparks drip on a toy cannon in front of him firing at Graham. His podium is made of flimsy planks placed atop the container signed, "Reservoir for Dead Insects destroyd by Dr. Katterf[elto]."

Abstract:: Design in oval. In a ballroom, Lord North, dressed as a lady in hooped petticoats and wearing his Garter ribbon, is dancing with Charles Fox who holds his hat in his left hand. Behind them sits Lord Chancellor Thurlow playing the bagpipes while at the same time receiving a bag of money handed him by Britannia who sits next to him. Thurlow retained the chancellor's office through two administrations preceding the North-Fox coalition before he was forced by Fox to resign. The bag of money may refer to the pension he was then granted

Abstract:: George III, surrounded by members of the present and former governments, stands on the British shore of the Atlantic Ocean. He holds out his arms in a gesture of uncertainty asking, "My Lords and Gentlemen, what should I do." Each of the statesmen gives his advice. In the background, "England's sun" is "setting" behind the hills at the foot of which sailors, soldiers and civilians are shown fighting, perhaps in allusion to the mutiny of sailors in Portsmouth in March 1783. Between both groups, on the extreme right, a smaller group of men with peg legs or on crutches, apparently veterans of the American war, is addressed by Lord Amherst who says, "Gentlemen we have no further occasion for you." On the extreme left, on the American shore of the Atlantic, a young girl in Indian dress sits between the kings of France and Spain, who each hold her hand. Benjamin Franklin places a wreath on top of her head-dress. Above in the sky, a witch flies away on a broomstick with a banner reading, "Peace -- Peace -- P-e-a-c" issuing from under her skirts

Abstract:: An obese sergeant with a pike in his left hand stands in front of two lines of soldiers, their bayonetted muskets shouldered. He is watching a pretty young girl holding out a dish that an elderly woman sitting on the ground fills with cherries she weighs in a scale. Another girl, a young child, and an elderly soldier watch her intently. To the right of this group, a woman and a man, both on horseback, drink from cups handed them on a tray by a little boy. On the left, behind the sergeant, a small drummer boy and another boy playing flute are taunted by another small boy. Near them, an officer salutes with his left hand the line of soldiers. Behind that group, an elderly man watches the proceedings in front of him through his lorgnon, while a little boy who accompanies him, immitates the soldiers by shouldering a walking stick. A large dog stretches as if woken up from a slumber

Abstract:: In an outdoor setting, George III examines through his quizzing glass a giant boulder with three bust portraits on it, each described below. On the left, in profile, is the Duke of Portland, with vague expression, "Supposed to be the head of a Patrician ... that never contained much brain ..." In the middle, full face, with angrily drawn brows, is Fox, "... turbulent and factious Tribune of great abilities which he exerted occasionally for and against Government ..." To the right, in profile, is a complacent looking Lord North, "... a Tribune of Patrician ancestors ..." who "... had the Art to impose himself upon the People for an honest disinterested man ..."

Abstract:: A harnessed lion on the left struggles to pull away from "The Pit of ruin" into which he is being pulled backwards by four other animals whose harnesses are attached to a large hook at the end of his. They represent Spain (spaniel), France (cockerel), United States (rattle snake) and Holland (pug). The lion is hindered by four disoriented donkeys representing the new ministry who yank back on his rope bridle. A two-headed eagle (possibly Russia) hovers above the pit protesting its neutrality

Abstract:: On the right, William Petty, Lord Shelburne, attacks Britannia pulling on her hair and petticoat while pushing her to the ground. She leans on her shield; her broken spear lies next to it. William Pitt, who stands behind her with his arms folded on his chest, looks down at her indifferently. On the left, Charles Fox, taking Lord North's hand in his, points to the distressed Britannia with an entreaty to join their forces in her defense and "Fox and North stand together in consultation (left). Fox, holding the right hand of North who stands on his right, points with his left hand towards Britannia (right), who has been thrown to the ground, and is being maltreated by Shelburne. Her shield and broken spear lie beside her. Shelburne has seized her by the hair and is tearing off her upper garments; he smiles saying, "I smile at the feeble efforts of them single". Britannia looking towards Fox and North cries, "Help! tis only your united strength can save me". Pitt, young and slim, stands beside Britannia, his arms folded, looking down at her and saying "I see her danger, yet, better she should perish than I join the Man I hate". Fox is saying to North, "Forgetting our former disputes Quick! let us join to save her". In the foreground lies a large scroll, inscribed, "BRITANIA rescue'd from the wicked designs of an artfull------", the last word hidden by a curl of the scroll."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: Charles Fox and Lord North follow the post sign to "St. James 5 Miles." The surface of their saddles is covered with large projecting spikes. Lord North, holding a roll signed, "Taxation" under his arm, has lost his stirrup and holds on to the saddle of his fast trotting horse with an expression of anguish. Fox behind him holds a roll signed, "Coalition." In an attempt to relieve his awkward position, he has dropped the reins and tries to support his weight by leaning on the horse's withers and rump
