Abstract:
"An enormously fat lady flings up arms, legs, and tea-cup in terror, as her flimsy gown catches fire from a red-hot poker falling from the grate (left). She, a stiff military officer, and a young woman sit at a round tea-table. The man sits paralysed, alarmed and helpless, spilling his tea; the girl has added to the calamity by knocking over the tea-table so that urn and tea-pot spill their scalding contents, and crockery slides towards the floor. A loutish footman enters (right) but has stopped dead, dropping a dish of muffins. A frightened cat scampers from the hearth-rug. Over the chimney-piece is a picture of Vesuvius in eruption. The woman is a monstrous creature with bare arms and elaborately dressed hair (or wig), a patterned carpet completes the design."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A squarely built young man walks, with an unseeing stare, diagonally towards the spectator and to the left, on a pavement. He wears a round hat, high coat-collar over swathed neckcloth; his double-breasted 'Jean de Bry' coat, see BMSat 9425, is strained across a double-breasted waistcoat horizontally striped. He wears long breeches or pantaloons which drape his legs, and low pumps with cross gartering above his ankles. "An ugly middle-aged woman, wearing a calash hood (cf. BMSat 5434) over a cap, picks up her petticoats to step over or through a bush shaped like a forest tree, but spotted with red fruit. She grins and clutches in her right hand a paper inscribed 'Wonderful Aeronauts'. She is walking towards a garden latrine (left). Two concentric circles of greenery surround the bush. "An elderly lady sits very upright in a glass-fronted coupé, the side window forming a frame. She has simply-dressed powdered hair on which is a turban-like drapery; a fichu covers her neck. Her dress, in front of which is a large bouquet of flowers, is shaped to the waist in a way very different from the fashion of the day. On the carriage door ls a baron's coronet above the initial 'D'. On the left is seen part of the coachman's back, and an elaborate hammer-cloth trimmed with gold fringe. Below the design: '-'t'was thus, heretofore, honest Dames shew'd their Faces, When Ball Nights & Birth Nights, call'd forth all their Graces! - But now, (-las-a-day!) what with Wigs and with Vails, Our Fair Ones, hide Faces, and all, - but their Tails! - '."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Sheridan leads the forces of the professionals against the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society, who are performing on a small, elegant stage, rising (without orchestra) from the boards in the foreground where these enemies advance. He is dressed as Harlequin; the tight chequered dress (slightly torn) accentuates his obesity; an empty purse hangs from his belt; in his left hand is a hat with a tricolour cockade (emblem of Jacobinism). In his right hand he flourishes a large pen whose feather makes wide swirling curves, terminating in firework-stars, and inscribed with the names of newspapers: 'Courier', 'Morning Post', 'Morning Herald', 'Morning Chronicle'. He is masked, to indicate that he has been writing anonymous squibs against the Pic Nics. The swirls of his pen partly obscure a figure of Comedy, meretricious, and half-naked, holding up a mask which decorates the left pilaster of the proscenium. The actors follow in characteristic attitudes. Kemble (as Hamlet) wearing a ribbon, ranting in tragedy, directly behind Sheridan, staggers back with legs astride, both arms raised. On the left is Mrs. Billington, singing as in BMSat 9765, left hand on her breast. Mrs. Siddons (? as Lady Macbeth) clutches a dagger. Behind is the head of Lewis (see BMSat 9915), with a comedian's smile, wearing a cocked hat. Crowds of actors pressing on from behind (left) and in deep shadow, are indicated by arms holding up banners; the chief one with the head of 'Shakespeare', badly torn. Others are 'Otway Rowe'; 'Kotzbue', and 'Schiller', both tricolour (indicating the supposedly revolutionary tendencies of modern German drama, cf. 'The Rovers' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', and BMSat 7054); 'Jonson', 'Congreve', 'Addison'. "Robson speaks in the House of Commons, with outstretched arms: "We're all ruinated, Sir! - all diddled, Sir!! - abus'd by Placemen, Sir!!! - Bankrupts all, Sir! - not worth Sixteen Pounds, Ten Shillings, Sir! - ". From his coat pocket project bundles of papers: 'Ignorance of ye Old Administration'; 'Stupidity of ye New Administration'; 'Charges against the Ministry'. In his hat, on the seat behind him, are other bundles: 'Ministerial Tricks', 'Plunders', 'Blunders', 'Collusion'; 'Impeach[ment]'; 'Punishm[ent]'. Behind him, and next his vacant seat, sits Tyrwhitt Jones, listening with a fierce scowl, a pen in his mouth, his hat beside him; he holds a bulky sheaf of 'Notes'. "Lady Salisbury stands on a mound holding up a fox's brush. She has outstripped the hounds who rush towards her, the foremost just about to reach her. She turns her head in profile to the left; her long dark hair streams down her back; she wears a hunting-cap resembling the helmet of a light horseman, the skirt of her habit and an under-petticoat are in tatters, the lower part torn away, showing laced half-boots and torn stockings. A masculine collar is thickly swathed with a coloured scarf, as in BMSat 10169. She wears an eyeglass on a ribbon. The background is a landscape with distant mountains; horses and hounds in the middle distance. "The Duke of Bedford stands in a stockyard in profile to the left, the fingers of his right hand dug into the flank of an immensely fat ox. He is not caricatured and is plainly dressed, wearing a round hat and heavy top-boots, holding a stock-whip. He says: "Ah, here's your sort! - here's your Nine-Inch Fat my boys! "O how he will cut up! (as my old friend Burke said!) - "how he will Tallow in the cawl and on the Kidneys!" Behind are three corn-stacks, trees, two other oxen, some very fat sheep (right). "A street scene lit by a lamp projecting from a high brick wall: 'Maiden Lane'. A tall man, very thin and pale, walks (right to left), wearing spectacles, a cane in his right hand. His shoulders are thickly sprinkled with powder, cf. BMSat 8190, &c. He terrifies an Irish fishwife, who holds up both arms to avert the spectre, turning away with a terrified stare, saying, "Governor Wall's Ghost! - [the only title] by J .... s!" Her basket of fish falls to the ground. The man is corpse-like, and his clothes seem to hang on a skeleton. The woman is stout and very ragged. Beside her a tunnel penetrates the wall, slanting down from the street-level, under an arch inscribed 'Cyder Cell[ars]', a famous night-resort in Maiden Lane."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The fat and clumsy William Dickinson stands on gouty legs in profile to the right, outside the open door of the House of Commons, where Addington is speaking. He stoops, holding a cane in his gloved hand, and from his closed and protruding lips issues a cloud inscribed : - "let me see - 25 Millions! how are we Ruin'd? - 10 pr Cent for my Money! - income tax taken off! - well! - well! - well! - ". [further words have been erased], behind him is the hooded chair of the door-keeper. Addington, in profile to the right, makes his budget speech; in his hand is a paper: '25 Mill. Loan'. Behind him is a crowd of undistinguished-looking members, as in BMSat 9843. Hawkesbury sits next Addington's empty seat, holding the 'Treaty [of] Peace'; his fingers are to his face as in BMSat 9843, but to his nose in place of his lip. "Napoleon, enthroned, receives the obeisance of Fox and his party. The centre figure is the enormous Mrs. Fox, burlesqued, and full face, who curtsies, fan in hand; her coarse features and patched face indicate Gillray's view of her antecedents, cf. BMSats 5352, 5587, 10589. On her right and next Bonaparte, O'Connor bends forward, chapeau-bras; from his pocket projects a pamphlet: 'Trial of O'Conner at Maid[stone]'. Opposite Bonaparte, and on his wife's left, Fox much caricatured, and with gouty swollen legs, makes a low bow, right hand on his breast, hat held out. He wears court dress with a sword. From his pocket issues a document: 'Original Jacobin Manuscripts'. Behind him Erskine, tall and self-important in barrister's wig and gown, bows with a complacent smile, holding out a brief bag in his left hand. Behind him Lord and Lady Holland (who is meretricious-looking) are bowing. In the foreground and on Fox's left, Robert Adair, much emaciated, grovels on the floor, his head between his arms which are extended along the carpet, in a gesture of abject homage. From his coat pockets project 'Revolutionary Odes, by Citizen Bow-ba-dara' and 'Intelligence for the Morning Chronicle.' Napoleon, very thin, sits on a canopied throne whose arms terminate in globes covered with maps of the world, each supported on the shoulders of a naked manikin. On one globe the Consul rests his right hand, clutching it with long predatory fingers; the left hand is extended towards Fox. He wears military uniform, with a huge plumed cocked hat, and (like Fox) a black bag attached to his coat collar, below his cropped hair. His throne is on a circular dais, covered with a fringed carpet, with a tasselled cushion for his feet. Behind it is a carved irradiated sun, reminiscent of Louis XIV, le Roi Soleil, but with eyes which look down in surprise at the First Consul. "Lord Kirkcudbright stands at a dressing-table on an immense baron's coronet which serves as a foot-stool, regarding himself in a draped mirror. He wears a court suit and sword with an immense bag to his wig, which sticks out from his humped back. His left arm is akimbo, fingers outspread, right arm bent and holding a small tricorne in a swaggering pose that exaggerates his deformity, which is further accentuated by a shirt frill. His profile is almost concave; the mirror reflects a satisfied full face. On the table are toilet appliances and a large bottle labelled 'Velno', a quack venereal remedy, see BMSat 7592. "A satire on the fashionable lectures at the Royal Institution. The audience are in a semicircle facing the lecturer's table, which is covered with apparatus. The lecturer, probably not Garnett but Thomas Young who succeeded him as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Institute in July 1801, and who delivered thirty lectures there between January and May 1802, is experimenting on Sir J. C. Hippisley (left). Holding him by the nose, he applies to his mouth a tube from a series of retorts in which a gas has been made. The result is a violent explosion of flame and smoke from the victim's breeches. Next Young stands Humphry Davy, assistant lecturer to the Institute since July 1801. Holding a pair of bellows with vapour and gas spouting from its nozzle, he watches the experiment with a sardonic smile. Facing the table from the right, Count Rumford (see BMSat 9565) stands a little apart from the audience, looking on with a complacent and proprietary smile; he wears an order. On the extreme right the audience are Isaac D 'Israeli, wearing spectacles over half-closed eyes, Lord Gower, watching impassively, and Lord Stanhope, looking intently through an eyeglass. Beside him on the padded green bench is an open book: 'Hints on the nature of Air requir'd for the new French Diving Boat.' (Fulton's submarine was tried in Brest harbour in 1801, and a small vessel was blown up by a torpedo; Stanhope's experiments with steam navigation had been unsucces-ful, cf. BMSat 8640.) Two unidentified ladies watch open-eyed. Immediately in front of Stanhope sits Lord Pomfret, enormously stout, his eyes almost shut. These watch from the right. Facing the lecturer sit (right to left) Sir H. Englefield, holding note-book and pencil, and a thin and elderly lady turned in profile, taking notes earnestly, but not watching the experiment. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A view of the House of Commons showing only the Ministerial benches immediately beside and behind the Speaker's Chair, and, on the extreme right, the Speaker and the Clerk with part of the Table. Addington, scarcely caricatured, but wearing gloves, is the principal figure. He stands in profile to the right, right hand extended; in his left is the 'Treaty of Peace with ye Democratick ['Democratic' was then used as an equivalent of Jacobin, cf. BMSat 8310.] Powers'; from his pocket issues a paper: 'List of the new Administration'. On the front bench (left) next Addington's seat, marked by his hat, sits Hawkesbury, nervous and deprecating, legs crossed, crouching forward, holding his chin. Next him is a very fat man with gouty legs, his head concealed behind Addington, identified as Dickinson, see BMSat 9854. Just behind are Nicholls, clutching his cane, and Tierney (not caricatured), both gazing intently at Addington's back. Behind Nicholls is Wilberforce, much caricatured. A fat, youngish man, standing full face (right), resembles Lord Temple. Of the other heads gazing fixedly at Addington only Tyrwhitt Jones (see BMSat 9401 and Index) can be identified: according to 'London und Paris', Jekyll and Whitbread are there. "Three women seated at a round table listen intently to a fourth who reads 'The Monk' by M. G. Lewis, one volume of which lies beside her on the table. One, full face, is old and ugly, the others young and comely; they register excited horror. The reader sits in profile to the left, elbows on the table; from an ornamental clasp at her waist hangs a watch, showing that the time is 12.45; a younger sister, hardly grown up faces her. The room is lit by a single candle on the table; beside it lie smoking snuffers in a tray. Curtains are draped across the window, a fire burns in the grate (right). Heavy shadows are thrown. The ornaments on the chimney-piece (the right of which is cut off by the right margin) are a Gorgon looking down at the women, a skeleton from which snakes emerge, and a dragon. On the fireplace is a carving in relief: Pluto carrying off Persephone in his chariot. There is a picture of a man in armour carrying off a protesting young woman, with rape and slaughter indicated in the background. "A scene in a vaccine institution; poor patients crowd in through a doorway on the left; in the room are those whose treatment has had dire consequences. A comely and frightened young woman sits in an armchair in the centre, the doctor (Jenner, a good portrait, see BMSat 9925) holds her right arm and gashes it with his knife, while a deformed and ragged boy holds up a bucket of 'Vaccine Pock hot from ye Cow'. A charity-schoolboy's oval badge on his sleeve is inscribed 'St Pancras'; from his coat pocket projects a pamphlet: 'Benefits of the Vaccine Process'. From the patients miniature cows sprout or leap. A pregnant woman (right) stands in profile to the right, a cow issues from her mouth, another from below her ragged petticoat. A man dressed as a butcher registers despair at the horns which sprout from his forehead. A labourer with a pitchfork sees a cow bursting from a swelling on his arm while another breaks through his breeches; cows struggle through huge swellings on nose, ear, and cheek. Another patient has only reached the stage of large carbuncles on forehead and chin. The doctor's medicine-chest and a close-stool stand on the left. On the chest are bottles, a syringe, &c, and a tub of 'Opening Mixture'. This a haughty assistant ladles contemptuously into the mouths of the patients as they crowd into the room. "Pitt stands beside John Bull in a basket, inscribed 'Sinking Fund', which is attached to an elaborate pagoda-like parachute. On the apex of the parachute is a solid ball or weight inscribed. 'Million pr Annum at Interest & Compd I[nterest]'. From this floats upwards into the clouds a tattered ribbon inscribed 'National Debt', by which the parachute was attached to the base of the balloon. The umbrella of the parachute is covered with the words 'Compd Interest \ Interest', many times repeated. The ropes which attach it to the basket are encircled by a 'Hoop of National Security'. John Bull looks down grinning and cheering, waving his hat. Pitt's right hand is on his shoulder, his left points out the earth beneath: the tiny British isles in a curving ocean near the edge of the globe. "Britannia, massive, but childlike, sleeps in a large wicker cradle, rocked by Addington, dressed as an elderly woman, who is seated on a low stool (right). Hawkesbury, a thin and spinsterish nursemaid, (left) approaches the foot of the cradle holding out an ornate child's commode, inscribed 'French C . . k . . g Chair'. Behind the cradle appear the head and shoulders of Fox, looking furtively towards Britannia and Addington, while he hangs out napkins to dry on a cord stretched across the fireplace; one is 'French Cambrick'. Britannia sleeps with her thumb in her mouth, her right arm across the coverlet, holding her shield and spear; her uncovered shoulder shows that she is wearing a Roman corslet. The head of the cradle is inscribed: 'Requiescat in Pace'. Addington sings: "o, By - my Baby, my Baby, - o, By - in Peace! my dearee! - For such a sweet Nap as This, You never had, far nor nearee! - so. By - my Baby, my dearee!' On the ground is a casserole of 'French Pap'; on the plain chimney-piece are a bottle labelled 'Composing Draught' and a box of 'Opiate Pills'. A fat citizen, the judge of the court, sits in an armchair on a low dais, a gouty leg resting on a cushion; he holds his nose in pained disgust. On the left a tailor in shirt-sleeves snips his shears angrily at the doctor, who stands (right) hat in hand holding up a pair of breeches on the end of his cane. On the wall (left) are bulky volumes: 'Game Laws', 'Folio XI', 'Vagrant Act', 'Penal Laws', 'Blackton [sic] Vol 2'. A satire set in an assembly room: Two well-dressed older men with caricatured faces, one with gloves and a large belly, bow to a old woman equally caricatured. The other members of the party are also caricatured in the background, some dancing. Musicians play in the balcony above on the right.

Abstract:
A "find lady" presumably an anonym of the period, finds herself in the fastness of a spunging house; she is made as welcome as circumstances will permit; a bottle of wine, the refreshment customary, is ordered, and the stern hearts of the sheriff's men are appealed to, while bail is sent for. It was a well-known practice at the beginning of the century, and earlier, to pay some obscure individual a trifling fee to become security on emergencies. Similar fictitious householders were always in attendance, and producible from the bar-rooms in the neighborhood. In the present case a professional limb, of the Hebrew persuasion, is presented, decently made up for the occasion, to tender himself as bondsman for the lady's due appearance. It is evident, however, that a suspicious recognition is taking place; 'Harry Holdfast, Officer of the Four Counties,' or his deputy, does not, judging from his expression, seem to approve of the surety, and the Jew looks somewhat disconcerted under his inspection. The tears of the unfortunate captive, and the plausible reassurance--as to the respectability of the bail offered--of her chaperone, or duenna, are powerless to move the stoic breast of the experienced catchpole.

"The instrumentalists are closely grouped round the armchair of the father of the family, a stout man in old-fashioned dress, who sits full face singing loudly, an open music book on his knees, his feet supported on the bar of his chair. His very fat wife sits beside him (right) blowing a trumpet to the grotesque inflation of cheek and neck. The eldest daughter (left) plays the double-bass; behind her stands a girl beating a tambourine. The younger children flank the design: a fat little girl (left) plays the triangle, looking up at her sister's tambourine. On the right a little boy sits at his mother's feet beating a large kettle-drum and shouting; he sits on two large volumes: 'Doctor Burneys Musical Travels [i.e., The Present State of Music in France and Italy ... 1771', and 'The Present State of Music in Germany . . . [etc.]', 2 v. 1773]. Mother and daughters are fashionably dressed; the daughters are comely.
