"A view of the pavement of Pall Mall seen from the cobbled roadway; it recedes slightly from left to right and is backed by part of the screen and façade of Carlton House, with part of the adjacent house on the extreme left on which is a door-plate inscribed Sherry [Sheridan]. On the pavement are three of the new gas-lamps; a tall post with three globes, one at the summit, flanked by two others on slender curving branches. In each globe is a triple flame. A fashionably dressed young man (left), points with his riding-whip, instructing the lady who holds his arm: The Coals being steam'd produces tar or paint for outside of Houses--the Smoke passing thro' water is deprived of substance and burns as you see. A fat Irishman turns to say to the speaker: Arrah honey if this man [Winsor] bring fire thro water we shall soon have the Thames and the Liffey burnt down--and all the pretty little Herrings & Whales burnt to cinders. The doctor wears old-fashioned dress, with powdered wig, and has a huge gold-headed cane. On the right are old-fashioned houses, one of which is alined with a church, the scene suggesting one of the older parts of the City of London with seventeenth-century houses. NB. Bleeding and Teeth drawn gratis. The striped pole slants forward above the board. At a casement window under the roof a woman is washing; a cat prowls on the tiles. This is a corner-house, its (invisible) side facing Bubble Alley, where the corner-house has a large placard: Peter Puff--Manufacturer of Deal Boards--without Knots from genuine Saw dust &c. At right angles to this is a narrow street receding towards the church. On this are more bills and a projecting lantern: Subscri[bers or ptions] taken in here. Spectators gaze at the bills in the foreground, middle distance, and background. A handsome young prostitute, elaborately dressed, with curls, feathered hat, and fluttering sash, walks from it, gazing straight before her. Behind her is a fat and hideous bawd, hands on hips, who watches her with calculating malevolence. The bawd wears a watch and seals dangling from her waist; behind her is a doorway inscribed 'Hotel', with an oil-lamp (as in British Museum Satires No. 11454) projecting from the door-post; a bell-pull is inscribed 'Ring the Bell'. Just within the door is a dark lobby lit by a lamp hanging from the ceiling and leading to a second (closed) door in which there is a small grille or judas. "The centre of a sunflower encloses a bust portrait of an ugly elderly man with a sly expression. The stem, inscribed Weak Stocky rises from a tub of Rank Butter which rests on two cheeses, the upper inscribed Mouldy, the lower Rotten; in the latter is a Rat Hole, with rats scampering in and out. The leaves of the plant droop, many have fallen off. "An elderly schoolmaster sits by a writing-table, in profile to the right, addressing an old countrywoman who faces him, making a slight curtsey. Behind her (right) are four little boys, two with bags of books slung from the shoulder. The schoolmaster, who wears night-cap, slippers, and buttoned overcoat or dressing-gown, says: "Good woman you are always making complaints against my Scholars, what have they done to offend you now?" She answers: "Please your Honors Worship they followd me up and down--and said one to another--At her!--beat her! damn her!--pelt her!-- and a great deal more that I do not recollect". The leader of the boys, bowing, cap in hand, says: "Indeed Sir, we were only repeating our Greek Alphabet, in order to get quite perfect--what the Old Woman heard was only Alpha--Beta-- Gamma--Delta--and so on to the conclusion". "Mrs. Clarke stands between Wardle and Wright, arms akimbo, an impudent and alluring virago. Wardle turns his head from her to speak to General Clavering, who stands on the extreme left. Clavering, in regimentals, his cocked hat poised absurdly on the top of his head, stands glaring angrily at Mrs. Clarke; he says: I intend to commence an Action against her for obtaining Mony under false pretences in the case of French's Levy -- I'll teach her to send Gentlemen to Newgate. Wardle, in civilian dress, answers: Leave her to me Ill touch her up in the Furniture Business. Mrs. Clarke says: I dont care a fig for any of you -- and as to you Mr Furniture Monger [Wardle]--ll be before hand with you. Wright, the upholsterer, stands behind her (right); he looks to the left scowling, and says: Thats a good girl follow him up--ll back you Ill let him know who's Wright and whose Wrong. "Heading to verses printed in four columns. Napoleon sits by a wicker cradle containing the sleeping bear of Russia (left), which he rocks with hand and foot. He leans against Holland (right), a fat burgher fast asleep. Behind a low hill on the left is a rising sun, inscribed Spain and Portugal, which irradiates part of the sky. Napoleon, precariously seated on thorns, supports himself on the point of his sheathed sword, and looks to the right, saying, This Rising Sun has set me upon thorns. The bear is tightly muzzled, the muzzle is labelled Boneys Promises. On the hood of the cradle stands a measure of Turkey Wheat. The King of Sweden stands behind Napoleon, fiercely raising his sabre; he leans towards the cradle, saying Awake thou Sluggard ere the fatal blow is struck and thou and thine execrable ally sink to eternal oblivion. In his left hand he holds up a staff and cap of Liberty. Holland sits on a cask of Genuine Hollands, holding a pipe; a broken sceptre dangles from his limp right hand. Behind him is a shadow inscribed Poland. Denmark sits with elbows on knees, his head and shoulders covered by a large extinguisher inscribed Denmark.
