Also notable in the decorative border of volume 3 are the Angel Gabriel and Virgin Mary at upper left and right corners, two bishop saints at center left and right, and Saint Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Egypt at lower left and right corners. Ivro ego Ioanes Svperantivs Eqves Consiliarivs Venetiarum Sexterij Sancti Pauli ad avangelia sancta Dei, quod donec ero Consiliarius,...", This decorated manuscript, known as a Giuramento, contains the oath of the government-appointed counselor of the sestiere (district) of San Polo in Venice. In 1569, the Venetian patrician Giovanni Soranzo held this position, and he commissioned this illuminated legal document, the first page of which includes his name in large golden letters; his patron saint, John the Baptist, in the upper left corner; and his coat of arms in the lower margin. Account book dates from the early years of Davenport's legal career. Among his clients were Timothy Dwight IV (1752-1817), then a distinguished minister and schoolmaster in Fairfield, later president of Yale, and Joel Barlow (1754-1817), the notable poet, diplomat, and politician, then living in Hartford. Other clients belonged to such prominent Connecticut families as the Beaches, Merritts, Seymours, and Whitneys. Perhaps the most intriguing client (?) was "Tom [,] Negro of A.W. [or A.T.] Watson," who engaged Davenport's services in 1791 and paid the balance in his labor. (Slavery was abolished in Connecticut in 1848.) It is also possible that he was loaned to Davenport to pay a debt. However, Tom is listed in the index, which is a list of clients.

Contains 3 small, hardbound notebooks with marbled exterior papers. The folder heading says: “Reeve, Tapping, 1744-1823. Lectures on law: notebooks kept by unidentified student(s) at Litchfield Law School, 1792-1795.--Finding aid., Notebook 1: 10x16 cm, approx. 40 sheets with writing on both sides. Paste-down on inside of front cover says: “Contents. Baron & Feme. Parent & Child.” Recto of first page says: “English Law & Connecticut Law Contrasted.” I don’t see any indication on the item regarding who took the notes or when they were made. The volume is fairly tightly bound, but in good shape.--Finding aid., Notebook 2: Also 10x16 cm, also approx. 40 sheets, the first sheet is blank, followed by 9 sheets with writing on both sides – the remainder of the sheets are blank. First sheet that contains writing headed as follows: “Litchfield September 19th 1792. New Trials. Rule –”. The separating of the cover has loosed the binding somewhat on the interior pages and they are easy to open.--Finding aid., Notebook 3: Also 10x1 cm, also approx.. 40 sheets with writing on both sides. Paste-down on inside of front cover says: “Contents. Master & Servant. Contracts.” Recto of first page says: “Comparisons of English & Connecticut Law. B.T. Reeve. 1795."
