"The three witches of Macbeth, hooded and cloaked, each holding a broom, are Liverpool (left), Sidmouth and Castlereagh (right). They surround a huge cauldron inscribed 'Cast--gh & C° Brass Manufacturers Fecit.', each adding something to the flames which tower up from it, surrounded by heavy smoke. A winged Devil at the apex of the design empties into the cauldron the contents of an 'Infernal Green Bag'; from it fall a dagger, a leech, tiny figures, manacles, a razor, an antlered animal's head, many legal papers docketed 'Lies'. Others are contributed by the witches; papers inscribed: 'Divorce', 'Reports', 'Leach', and 'Cooke'. There are also flames under the pot, which, are tended by two naked demons, one with the head of Canning who uses bellows inscribed 'Mother Hunn' [see British Museum Satires No. 13617]; the other with the head of Wellington, who uses a red-hot 'Waterloo Poker'. The Canning-demon sits on the back of a naked female demon (? his mother) who is blowing the flames. On the extreme left and right, each attended by a 'Blue Devil' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14598), stand George IV and the Duke of York. The King, his arms raised, exclaims: "Tell me ye d--n'd infernal Hags of Night, shall Fr--k reign?" [i.e. shall he get a divorce, remarry, and block his brother's succession, see No. 13789]. He stretches across the crown and sceptre which are on the ground. His Blue Devil, touching the George which is suspended from his neck, and his gartered leg ('Honi So[it]'), says: "All hail Macbeth! thou'rt now the cause of Laughter." The Duke of York, in uniform and holding a naked sword inscribed 'the Army', says: "I'll do!--I'll do!--I'll do!--" His attendant Blue Devil: "All hail Macduff!! that shall be K--g hereafter--." The witches chant their parodies. Liverpool: "In the Cauldron first we'll mingle, What shall make great Macbeth single; Oath of an Italian Slave-- Earth of Snuffy [Queen Charlotte] from the grave-- Blood of Radicals--and last In let the Divorce be cast, Hubble, bubble,Toil and trouble, Fire blase and Cauldron bubble!!--" Castlereagh: "Put in C--ke of Lincolns Inn, All that's evil, all that's sin, L--ch's honor--and Britain's shame, Put them in, and fan the flame, Now the broth is good and strong, Macbeth shall again be young." "Robinson, wearing his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, leans forward from the right to place an extinguisher on the head of Fortune who sits in profile to the left, on a small globe, regardless of her fate. He says: Come Madam put on your Night Cap. She is a comely young woman with feathered wings, and a high-waisted dress with classical sandals. Her Wheel of Fortune serves as back to her seat. She holds out a Ticket £20 000 to an eager and indignant crowd; in her left hand is a full purse. At her feet is a box of jewels, behind her a cornucopia from which pour gold coins, with a bag of Filings. At her feet four little blue-coat boys from Christ's Hospital kneel imploringly. Behind them are a brawny washer-woman and a gaily dressed young woman. The former points to tub, Soap, linen, and brush at her feet, and shouts to Robinson: Let her alone take off the Soap Tax. The latter screams Stop let Me get a Prize first. A burly bare-legged cobbler holds up an old shoe, shouting, give us a Lottery and no Leather Tax. A man next him shouts Shut up the Subscription Houses [clubs such as Brooks's]. The two on the extreme left shout No Tax on Tallow and No Horse Racing. A hideous man grovels on the ground behind Robinson to grab coins and two bags, Filings and Gold Dust, and a Prize Bag. He looks up, saying, Persevere and the Saints shall Praise you. Three men stand behind Robinson, watching; two say, with cynical smiles: Hear Hear I knew they'd Grumble and He's only a Young Chancsellor. The third says with a frown: Little Van knew [better] than to Abolish a Voluntary Tax. "A sequence of six designs in two rows. [1] 'Begging before the Door of his Benefactor.' Young Leach, as a crossing-sweeper, holds out his hat to a gentleman who amiably puts in a coin. The latter walks away from a street-door with a plate inscribed 'Sir Robt Taylor'. [2] 'In the Service of his Benefactor.' Leach, as a young footman in livery, walks behind Taylor and his wife, who are returning from a country church. He carries cane and prayer-book. [3] 'As Clerk to his Benefactor.' Leach writes at a desk in a bare room, with a shelf of books high on the wall. [4] 'Now a Lawyer!!!' He sits in a well-furnished room, smilingly giving advice to a dismayed client (cf. British Museum Satires No. 11931, &c.). [5] 'Becomes a Counsellor!!! Thanks to his Benefactor.' Scene in court, with a crowded gallery. "Satire on the end of Lord Rockingham's administration shown as a dance at court. The verses below describe the protagonists who have been numbered in pen and ink: in the centre, Princess Augusta (1) dances with Lord Bute (2) their joined hands holding a leading string attached to Pitt (3) with a gouty leg who leans on his crutch, adorned with a coronet, as he converses with America, a half naked native American woman holding a bottle of rum. To the left of the Princess, stand Charles Townshend (4), holding a weathercock, beside his partner Britannia standing on her head, her shield and spear fallen on the ground. Further left, Lord Northington (5) robed as Lord President of the Council holds a glass of wine towards his elaborately dressed young woman (6; identified by Stephens as Betty Careless, although she had died in 1752). On the right, Henry Fox (7) dances with the devil; behind him are a Frenchman saying he will not pay the Canada Bills recompensing Britain after the Seven Years' War, and a Spaniard saying he will not pay the Manilla Ransom, a sum of two million dollars offered to Britain by the governor of Manilla when the city was captured. At far left, the king (8) plays the fiddle accompanied by two Scottish bagpipers. Wilkes (9) flies above, a copy of his Essay on Woman in his pocket, bound for Paris on a broomstick with a witch who says she will take him anywhere but to Scotland; he defecates on the head of Lord Bute. In the foreground stand four politicians: Temple (10) saying that he will get Francis Hayman to paint the scene for his garden at Stowe; Newcastle (11) wearing spectacles; Rockingham (12) wearning boots and carrying a riding whip; Winchilsea (13).
