"Pitt as Death on the pale Horse rides naked on the White Horse of Hanover, galloping over the prostrate bodies of pigs; other pigs, a multitude extending to the horizon, flee before him. On the horse's fringed saddle-cloth is a crown. Pitt is very emaciated, his flaming hair streams behind him encircled by a fillet inscribed 'Destruction'. In his right hand is a large flaming sword; in his left he holds the thread-like body of a scaly monster with gaping jaws, webbed wings, and serpent's tail. Behind him on the horse's hind quarters sits a naked imp wearing the feathered coronet of the Prince of Wales, with the motto 'Ich di[en]'. He grasps Pitt, and kisses his posterior; in his left hand he holds out a paper: 'Provision for the Millenium £125,000 pr An'. The horse's tail streams out, expanding into clouds, and merging with the flames of Hell which rise from the extreme right. In the tail and flames imps are flying, headed by Dundas holding a pitchfork; he wears a wig and plaid with horns and webbed wings. Behind are three imps: Loughborough, indicated as usual by an elongated judge's wig in back view (cf. BMSat 6796); Burke with webbed wings and serpent's tail; Pepper Arden [Identified by Wright and Evans as Lord Kenyon. The identification in the text is confirmed by Lord Holland.] wearing a large wig. In the foreground (right) Pitt's opponents are being kicked towards Hell by the horse's hind legs. Fox has just been violently struck in the face, and staggers backwards, clutching a paper inscribed 'Peace'. Sheridan lies prone, face downwards, hands raised, as if for mercy. Wilberforce sits on the ground clasping his 'Motion for a Peace' (see BMSat 8637). Behind Fox Lansdowne looks up from the ground, clenching his fists. "A close parody of West's picture, 'The Death of Wolfe' (1771). The three officers supporting the mortally wounded Pitt are (left to right) Burke, Pepper Arden (Master of the Rolls), and Dundas. From Burke's pocket projects a paper 'Reflections upon £3700 Pr Ann.' (The policy indicated by his famous book, see BMSat 7675, &c, had been rewarded by two pensions, see BMSat 8654.) Dundas, wearing a kilt, offers Pitt a glass of wine (in place of stanching his wound); a bottle of 'Port' projects from his coat-pocket. The officer behind holding the British flag is identified by Lord Holland as Chatham and the man who supports him as Powys, noted for his propensity to tears (see BMSat 6642). The White Horse of Hanover (cf. BMSat 8691, &c.) on the flag is more conspicuous than in West's picture, and a scroll inscribed 'Magna Chart[a]' has been added. In the group facing Pitt the place of the Mohawk Indian seated on the ground is taken by Loughborough, half-naked, the purse of the Great Seal replacing the Indian's beaded bag, the mace that of his musket, a bloodstained headsman's axe that of his tomahawk. In place of the beaded headdress is the Chancellor's wig surmounted by a monster with the head of a cock, whose limbs are snakes. The two men who lean forward to Wolfe, pointing back to the messenger with the news of victory, are dressed as running-footmen in livery and hold the long sticks with the head enclosing an egg carried by these men. Ink-pots are slung across their shoulders by bands inscribed 'Ist Treasury Runner' and '2d Tre . . .', showing that they are the two Secretaries to the Treasury, George Rose and Charles Long. Grenville, in peer's robes, stands between Lord Mansfield and Windham, who supports him. In place of West's handsome young officer who runs up with the French flag is a man with the face of a demon holding a tattered tricolour flag inscribed 'Libertas', its shaft broken. A large bonnet-rouge lies on the ground. The couple who stand on the extreme right watching Pitt with clasped hands are Richmond and a man with a wooden leg. Richmond, in general's uniform, his bald head contrasting with the luxuriant hair of West's corresponding figure, has a cannon slung to his back to indicate his Mastership of the Ordnance (cf. BMSat 6921, &c.) in which, however, he had been succeeded by Cornwallis (Feb. 1795), see BMSat 8341. His weeping companion has been identified as Wilberforce, though his wooden leg might indicate Brook Watson, Commissary-General (see vol. vi). The background differs from West's picture. In place of the confused fighting and the smoke which surrounds the Heights of Abraham, the Ministerial cavalry advance in even line, rank upon rank, and put to flight a small body of sansculottes with bonnets-rouges (left). "John Bull (left), a stout countryman wearing jack-boots, rides (right to left) through a wood on a wretched hack, ready to fall under his weight. Pitt kneels on the ground (right) in profile to the left, aiming a blunderbuss (which is supported on crossed sticks) point-blank at John; it is inscribed 'Standing Army'. He masquerades as a beggar: his dress is tattered, on the ground is his hat, containing coins; he says: "Good Sir, for Charity's sake \ "have Pity upon a poor ruin'd Man; - \ "drop if you please, a few bits of \ "Money into the Hat, & you shall \ "be rewarded hereafter -" From his coat-pocket project a cocked pistol and a paper: 'Forced Loan in reserve'. He points to a document on the ground beside him: 'Humble Petition, for Voluntary - Contribution Subscriptions & new Taxes, to save the Distres'd from taking worse Courses.' John Bull has dropped his righteins and holds his hat, full of guineas; he looks with melancholy distrust at Pitt, but drops guineas into his hat. His horse, disfigured with sores, is evidently the white horse of Hanover, its head-band is red and blue, the Windsor uniform (cf. BMSat 8691, &c). Dundas wears Highland dress, Grenville peer's robes and a grenadier's cap with the letters 'Wm R' (cf. "Letters on the design refer to an 'Explanation' etched below the title. A scene on the stage of a theatre symbolizes Westminster Hall. In the foreground a large cauldron is sinking through a rectangular opening in the floor. It is inscribed 'A. \ Exit in Fumo', explained as 'The Managers Cauldron'. From it rises a dense mass of dark smoke which divides into two curving branches, one on each side of a brightly irradiated bust of Hastings. The bust looks towards the Managers' box (right) and stands on a large rectangular pedestal inscribed: 'Virtus repulsæ \ nescia sordidæ \ incontaminatis \ fulget honoribus'. The cauldron is filled with burning documents, the origin of the smoke, inscribed, respectively: 'Charge', 'Charge Presents', 'Charge of Oppression', 'Charge of Cruelty', 'Charge of Extortion', 'Charge of Peculation in Contracts', 'Torture'. These are: 'B Ingredients mix'd up by the Managers to blacken C a character out of their reach'. Standing within another rectangular opening in the floor is Burke in profile to the left, gesticulating furiously, a paint-brush in his raised right hand, a document, 'more Ingredients', clasped in his left hand. He is: 'D One of the Managers & a principal Performer who having "Out-heroded Herod" retires from the Stage in a Passion at seeing the Farce likely to be damn'd.' Above the bust are two projecting beams, each supported by an angel (as in Westminster Hall), wearing a judge's wig and gown with a scroll issuing from the mouth. The figure on the left is Thurlow, looking calmly down, his hand on his breast and saying: "not black upon my Honour." The other is Loughborough, his head turned away, showing the back of his wig only (cf. BMSat 6796), and saying: "Black upon my Honour". They are: 'K a great Critic in a high Situation, who has paid close Attention. L another great Critic, not quite so good a Judge, giving his Opinion on the other Side'. On the right is a stage-box, representing the Managers' box. From it Fox, wearing a bag-wig, leans forward, looking excitedly and near-sightedly through his glass, his hand outstretched as if to restrain Burke. Behind him is the quasi-imbecile profile of Sir James Erskine (see BMSat 7152) looking over his shoulder. On the extreme right are the backs of the heads and shoulders of two Managers who are leaving the box. Below (right) a profile looks gloomily towards the stage. Fox is 'E Another Manager a great Actor very anxious about the fate of the Farce'. The others are 'eee Other Managers very well dress 'd [cf. BMSat 7309] but not very capital performers some of them tired of acting'. Just outside the box is the profile head of Francis, his baleful stare (as in BMSat 7292, &c.) fixed on the bust. He is: 'F The Prompter, no Character in ye farce but very useful behind the Scenes.' The outside of the box ('G The Managers Box') is traversed by the winding track of a snail, beginning in '1787' and meandering past '1788', '1789', '1790', '1791', '1792', '1793', '1794', the snail's head touching '1795'. A rat has gnawed a hole in the front of the box, though which he peers; in his mouth is a ticket: 'Permit the Bearer to Pass & Repass 1787 renew'd 1795', on which are indicated the arms of Sir Peter Burrell (on all tickets of admission, cf. BMSat 7276). Above the design is a stage curtain with the usual motto, 'Veluti in Speculum'. Below the stage (right) appear, in an oblong aperture fringed with flames ('H. a Court below to which the Managers retire upon quitting the Stage.'), the head and hands of a corpse-like Devil holding a pitchfork which points directly to the Managers' box. He is 'I Usher of the Mack Rod there'. He says: "By the pricking of my Thumbs, Something wicked, this Way comes." "A stage-wagon drawn (left to right) by four horses with human heads, whose large, hairy ears suggest asses rather than horses. The wagon is inscribed 'Fox. Sheridan & Pennylus. India Papers'. It is piled with books and documents, inscribed 'Vol. cxii, Letters &c, India Papers, Private Correspondence', and 'Delhi'. The tilt or cover, which is pushed back to show the papers, is punningly inscribed 'To Battle Hastings'. The two leaders are led by a demon who flourishes a whip; both have rosaries with crosses round their necks; the near leader is Burke wearing his Jesuit's biretta (cf. BMSat 6026), the other has some resemblance to Sheridan. The near wheeler is Fox, the off wheeler resembles Lord Surrey: the rosary would be more appropriate to him than to Sheridan. In the background is Brooks's, the cornice inscribed 'Brooks's hot-hell'. The building is drawn with topographical correctness, and resembles Malton's plate of 1800, except that it is detached on the north as well as the south. "The Prince of Wales and his friends besiege the Treasury, whose gate is on the right: a massive door, spiked and triply padlocked, fills a stone arch inscribed 'TRE[ASURY]'. Fox, his legs encased in armour, stoops down to bite one of the huge padlocks. Behind him are Hanger, about to strike the door with his massive club (cf. BMSat 6924, &c), and a barefooted Scot in Highland dress, probably Adam, preparing to smite with a sword whose blade is inscribed 'Faction'. In the centre, but rather behind his followers, stands the Prince, ragged and dishevelled, but fashionable, firing at the gate a blunderbuss inscribed 'Itch Diadem'. On the left are Burke and North: Burke, very lean, wears armour, a Jesuit's biretta (cf. BMSat 6955) and huge spectacles. "A fantastic representation of the supper at the ball given by the eleven Knights of the Bath installed on 19 May in Westminster Abbey, see BMSat 7318. Full accounts appeared in the newspapers, and the scene depicted appears intended for 'the Prince of Wales, Duke of York, and a select party of their friends' who 'supped privately in the cotillon room'. 'London Chronicle', 27 May 1788. The guests sit on each side of a long narrow table, scantily provided with food, the bench on the near side of the table showing legs and feet in characteristic attitudes. The design, long as it is, shows only a section of the table, the ends not appearing. [Pl. 1.] On the extreme left, on the near side two elderly and ugly ladies lean ingratiatingly towards Major Topham, the seat of whose breeches is decorated with Prince of Wales's feathers. On the opposite side, on the extreme left, is a couple identified as Sir J. Johnstone and lady. He is very unlike the herculean uncouth figure described by Wraxall, 'Memoirs', 1884, iv. 404. Next (opposite Topham) Lord Bathurst takes wine with Lord Stormont who grasps a decanter of French Wine. Burke, seated next Topham, on whom he turns his back, holds out an empty plate towards Hastings on the opposite side of the table who keeps to himself a whole ham; they regard each other with wary suspicion. On Hastings's left sits Mrs. Hastings, also looking warily at Burke. She is decked with jewels and wears a small crowned turban as a head-dress. Next her is a man wearing a ribbon and star, drinking, who is identified as the Marquis of Buckingham (K.G.). Opposite Mrs. Hastings sits a very fat lady talking to a lean man wearing epaulettes. They are identified as Mrs. Hobart [Whom she does not resemble] (actually Miss Jefferies) and Col. Jekyll. Next Jekyll, Lord Sandwich and an ugly (unidentified) man share the same jelly-glass, holding between them the plate on which it stands. On the extreme right, on the farther end of the table, a man of plebeian appearance drinks from a tankard; he is identified as Dr. Parr. The man between him and Buckingham is identified as the Duke of Portland, whom he does not resemble. [Pl. 2.] On the extreme left the Duke of Grafton turns towards the fat Mrs. Hobart (identified as Miss Jefferies). Opposite him a stout man drinking from a jelly-glass has been identified as Lord Nugent (whom he does not resemble). Next him Cornwallis, wearing ear-rings, puts his arm round the shoulder of a lady, identified as Lady Clive, who looks languishingly at him as she takes a (?) peach. Next her is Lord North. Opposite him is a man identified as Sir George Shuckburgh [He is unlike the Shuckburgh of Gillray's 'French Habits' (1798)] who takes his neighbour by the arm offering her a glass of wine; she demurs deprecatingly. On the farther side of the table, with no one seated opposite him, is the Prince of Wales, a fork held to his mouth (as in BMSat 8111), sitting impassively between Lady Archer and Lady Cecilia Johnston, two bedizened harridans, who ogle him, putting their hands on his shoulders. Next Lady Cecilia (right) is Mrs. Fitzherbert, ogling Wilkes, who sits next her, squinting and leering. On the near side of the table is a man in back view wearing a ribbon and (right) Lord Carlisle talking to Lord Heathfield who sits behind a sirloin of beef. Opposite him and on the extreme right is a pretty young lady identified as Miss Bingham. [Pl. 3.] On the extreme left, on the near side of the table, a middle-aged couple, holding knives and forks, turn to each other with animated smiles. Opposite them sits a good-looking young man wearing a ribbon and star (perhaps Lord Mornington). On his left the Duke of Richmond turns with an expression of pained surprise to Lord Rawdon. Opposite this pair two stout men turn to each other, both drinking. The central group of this plate, a pendant to that of the Prince of Wales on pl. 2, is the Duke of York sitting between two pretty young women, his right arm is round the shoulder of one, probably Lady Tyrconnel, the other holds his left arm and shoulder; both look languishingly at him. On the near side of the table are two more couples: Lord Amherst (caricatured) puts an arm round the waist of a lean and ugly old woman wearing the fashionable false 'derrière' in an exaggerated form. On the extreme right Lord Derby, his hand on his breast, drinks wine with the witch-like Lady Mount Edgcumbe. On the farther side of the table are two unidentified men, one of whom drinks from his plate; next him is a pretty young woman. On the extreme right Dundas turns to speak to his left-hand neighbour; he grasps a decanter and glass, spilling his wine. [Pl. 4.] On the farther side of the table Philip Francis turns to speak to Dundas. Opposite him, and on the extreme left, a stout lady, identified as Lady Salisbury (see BMSat 6115), sits in back view, her petticoats enormously inflated behind. She speaks to no one: Pitt, her right hand neighbour, leans behind the back of the Speaker (alternatively identified as Thurlow) to touch glasses with Fox, who smiles amiably, holding a decanter in his right hand. Cornwall bends avidly over his plate; he wears his Speaker's wig, the mace lies across his knees. Four figures sit opposite this group: the ugly Pepper Arden who gazes admiringly at a pretty young woman on his left; she appears displeased at her position between Arden and a fat woman who puts both knife and fork to her mouth. Next the latter is Lord Lansdowne, who seizes affectionately the hand of Lord Sydney who turns towards him with a smile; they drink to each other. Next Fox on the near side of the table a plain and elderly couple drink to each other; both are thin. They are identified as Lady Powlett and Sir H. Powlett. Opposite them, and, like the lady on his left, intent on his plate, is a military officer identified as General Bligh. His neighbour is old and haggard, her hair elaborately dressed. Next her and on the extreme right two men carouse together, both wear stars; one is identified as the Duke of Bedford, the other (right) as the Duke of Norfolk (neither had an order). Opposite, a man wearing a ribbon pours out wine for an elderly and ugly lady who receives the attention with a gesture of satisfaction. They are identified as Sir George and Lady Yonge. "A strip design of figures, generally in pairs, in the manner made popular by Bunbury's 'Long Minuet' (BMSat 7229). All attempt to imitate the bow of the Prince of Wales; the words spoken are etched above the head of the speaker. A tall thin man bows, facing a short fat one who says, "What do you think of mine, Sir". The former answers, "It won't do upon my honor." An isolated middle-aged man stoops, his left hand on his back, his right leg raised, his face contorted with pain, saying, "Oh, damn the Lumbago!" A tall thin man, whose dress imitates that of the Prince of Wales, bows, hat in hand, saying, "Monstrous like the Prince, the very bow dem me". His stout and ungainly 'vis-à-vis', dressed in the fashion of c. 1760, is a doctor with medicine-phials projecting from his coat-pocket; he bends low, saying, "Curse it, I've burst the waistband of my breeches". A man wearing a sword bows, holding his hat in both hands; he says to his 'vis-à-vis', a young Irish volunteer in regimentals, "Good God, Sir, you should take off your hat when you make a bow!" The other (the first figure on the second sheet) answers, "Arrah let a Volunteer alone, my dear, did you ever know a man fire before he presented!" A stiff, thin man, resembling BMSat 6718 (Furtado), says to a man who bows from the waist, his body almost horizontal, his long pigtail queue projecting stiffly, "You bow too low, Sir". The other answers, "And you seem to be spitted, Mr few." A Frenchman, 'chapeau-bras' and wearing a bag-wig, capers like a dancing-master, saying, "Ha! Ha! by gar poor John Bull's back will ache at this amusement". His foppishly dressed 'vis-à-vis' stiffly imitates his attitude, saying, "These tight stays will be the death of me." A plainly dressed man bends towards a boy who bows awkwardly, saying, "Vary weel, Sawny, vary like the Prince's bow!" A stout and ugly bishop (the first figure on the third sheet) with an ill-fitting wig, bowing obsequiously, his hands on his breast, faces a thin stiff man who looks at him through an eye-glass, saying, "It may do for a poor Curate presenting a Petition!" The bishop answers, "Better than yours you Pulpit Prig." Burke and Fox, both 'chapeau-bras', bow facing each other: Burke says, "Garrick's bow at the Shrine of Shakespeare was nothing to it." Fox answers, "This is to a certainty something like it." Thurlow, in Chancellor's wig and gown, bows, saying, "He take precedence of me! d-----n his bow!" (cf. BMSat 7320). "The interior of a large church or cathedral. Burke, dressed as a Jesuit, standing within a low, semicircular wall at the foot of a crucifix, marries the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Fitzherbert. The Prince is about to put the ring on her finger. Fox gives her away, holding her left wrist. Beside him (right) stands Weltje in back view but looking to the left at the ceremony. A napkin is under his left arm, bottles project from his coat-pockets, and the tags on his shoulder denote the liveried manservant. To the left of Fox appears the profile of George Hanger. On the left North sits, leaning against the altar wall, sound asleep, his legs outstretched. He wears his ribbon but is dressed as a coachman, his hat and whip beside him. All the men wear top-boots to suggest a runaway match. Behind the Prince in a choir seat is a row of kneeling monks who are chanting the marriage service. The crucifix is partly covered by a curtain, but the legs and feet are painfully distorted ... A collection of four engraved admission tickets to the trial of Warren Hastings for the 75th, 116th, 136th, and 141st days in Westminster Hall, each signed by (presumably) the chamberlain for the day -- Chedworth, Somerset, Darlington, Dorchester. Two are printed in black ink, another in blue, and the fourth in green ink; they all carry seals. Three contain comments in a contemporary hand about the day's proceedings praising Sir Robert Dallas's defense, commenting on the fact of Mr. Pitt's reply, and evaluating Edmund Burke's remarks on his second day of speeches. The ticket for the 116th day contains extensive notes on the verso. The ticket of 136th mentions Mr. Fox's reply to Hasting's counsel. Three of the tickets have been torn in the corner, possibly when the bearer entered the hall?
Description:
Warren Hastings (1732-1818) was the first governor-general of British India, from 1773 to 1785. He joined the British East India Company in 1750 as a clerk. In 1757 he was made the British Resident of Murshidabad; appointed to the Calcutta council in 1761; a member of the Madras council in 1769; made governor of Bengal in 1772; and appointed the first Governor-General of India in 1773. However, Hastings resigned in 1784, and, returning to England, was charged with high crimes and misdemeanors by Edmund Burke. One of many satires on the morganatic marriage of George IV and Mrs. Fitzherbert. on the left Mrs. Fitzherbert as Dido sits on a funeral pyre made up of phallic-shaped logs and watches the Prince of Wales sail away in a small boat whose flag is inscribed with the word 'Windsor' [Castle]. The wind which fills the ragged sail of the boat appears to be produced by a blast from the mouths of Dundas and Pitt, whose profile heads are on the extreme left. It is directed at Dido's head, and has blown off a royal crown, an orb and sceptre, and a coronet decorated with the Prince of Wales's feathers. With a tragic gesture she holds out in her right hand a mutilated crucifix. Her breast is bare and her girdle of 'Chastity' is broken. At her feet lie emblems of Popery: a sharp-toothed harrow inscribed 'For the conversion of Heretics', shackles, a pair of birch-rods, an axe, a scourge, and a rosary and crucifix. The pyre seems to be made of money-bags. The boat is the 'Honor'; the Prince is seated between Fox, who holds the tiller, and Burke, who holds the sail; his arms are folded and he looks over his shoulder at Fox, saying, "I never saw her in my Life". Fox echoes "No, never in all his Life, Damme"; Burke, wearing a Jesuit's biretta, says "Never", and North, who sits beside him, apparently asleep, says "No, never". "The interior of a large church or cathedral. Burke, dressed as a Jesuit (cf. BMSat 6026), standing within a low, semicircular wall at the foot of a crucifix, marries the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Fitzherbert. The Prince is about to put the ring on her finger. Fox gives her away, holding her left wrist. Beside him (right) stands Weltje in back view but looking to the left at the ceremony. A napkin is under his left arm, bottles project from his coat-pockets, and the tags on his shoulder denote the liveried manservant. To the left of Fox appears the profile of George Hanger. On the left North sits, leaning against the altar wall, sound asleep, his legs outstretched. He wears his ribbon but is dressed as a coachman, his hat and whip beside him. All the men wear top-boots to suggest a runaway match. Behind the Prince in a choir seat is a row of kneeling monks who are chanting the marriage service. The crucifix is partly covered by a curtain, but the legs and feet are painfully distorted as in BMSat 6026. "A ship's boat, containing the Prince of Wales and his friends, puts off from shore. In the stern is Sheridan clenching his fist at two bearded Jews (left) who kneel in supplication for payment of their debts. Behind them stands Perdita Robinson, her hair loose, her arms outstretched, also in despair at the departure. Captain Morris stands in the stern, pushing off with a boat-hook. George Hanger turns round to threaten the two Jews with his bludgeon (cf. BMSat 6924). In front of him sits a man in legal gown and flowing wig, his face almost concealed, identified in an old hand (in BMSat 6992) as Erskine. His wig is inscribed 'Leather Bag'. The two central figures are the Prince and Fox; the Prince sits astride a cask of 'Imperial Tokey', holding up a glass and looking reflectively towards the shore; Fox stands behind him, his hands resting on the hilt of a large sword inscribed 'chop Logic'. In the bows stands Burke, bending forward, his arms outstretched as if giving a benediction; he wears a monk's robe with a mitre in place of the usual biretta (cf. BMSat 6026). At his feet sit North and Portland, wearing his coronet. Sheridan, Morris, and Fox wear armour and helmets; that of Sheridan is inscribed 'From Drury', that of Morris 'W Morris'; that of Fox is plumed, and decorated with a fox's head, a gallows, and the words 'We escape'. The Prince wears a fool's cap trimmed with his feathers. "The cattle-pens (right) of Smithfield Market are filled with cattle with the faces of peers and draped with ermine-trimmed robes. [The ermine is apparent only in the coloured impression] Thurlow, dressed as a farmer, the owner of the cattle, stands on guard with his back to the pens; he wears his Chancellor's wig and uses the mace as a walking-stick. He clutches a full purse in his right hand and looks fiercely at a smaller number of cattle who are being driven from the left towards the pens. One of these, with the head of Lord Derby, stands on his hind legs, saying, "I move an adjournment till after the next Newmarket Meeting". The cattle in the pens (right) have the heads of peers who were believed favourable to Hastings. In the front row are (left to right) Lord Sydney, the Duke of Grafton, and (between two unidentified peers) Lord Bathurst. An ox with the head of Lord Lansdowne, his horns tipped to prevent mischief, stands (right) outside the pen which he tries to enter, his eyes slyly fixed on Thurlow (cf. BMSat 7311). Others cannot be identified. The Opposition peers include the Duke of Portland (who glares fiercely at Sydney), the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Carlisle, and Lord Stormont. They are being driven by a fierce-looking drover (left); a dog wearing a peer's robe, his collar inscribed 'Mountford', barks at them. On the extreme left Hastings, dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding (right to left) a miserable horse fit only for the knacker (the horse of Hanover), carries off a calf with the profile of George III, its forelegs tied together. He whips his horse ferociously. Behind him is a pawnbroker's shop-window, with three balls and the sign 'Money Lent'. In the middle of the cattle-pens (right) is a bell (that of the Market) on a post, a man (? George Rose) wearing a bag-wig pulls the bell-rope, looking round with a cynical smile. Undifferentiated ministerial cattle at the back of the pens push with their horns at a watchman's box which they are overturning. Three men dressed as watchmen, seated on the roof (which they have climbed to escape the cattle), drop staff, lantern, and rattle and are about to fall off; they are Fox, Burke, and Sheridan. The background is formed by buildings; the pawnshop (left) adjoins a large inn behind the cattle, a house at the corner of 'Smithfield' and 'Cow Lane', which diverges on the right. It is the sign of the Crown; in a balcony over the large gateway which leads to the courtyard sit Dundas (left) and Pitt (right), much at their ease, facing each other in profile, regardless of the turmoil below. They are smoking and have foaming tankards marked with a crown; Dundas is in Highland dress, Pitt is dressed as an English farmer or drover. On the balcony is: 'Good Entertainment for Man and Beast'. The new ministry is depicted on a large carousel, erected in front of the "Crown and Royal Bob" Inn. The structure is supported by a center pole held in place by pegs labelled "Treasury," "Navy" and "Army" terminating at the top with the head of the King in the form of a wig block. Fox, with a fox's head and tail, leads the procession, holding a bag of money. Behind him, Lord North on a horse with its legs cut short, loses his wig; Burke in Jesuit's habit and on a similarly lame horse, has partially turned into a skeleton due to his economical reform; Admiral Keppel behind him is desperate to remain seated on his donkey. Lastly a Scotsman labelled "President" signifies Scottish influence over the Crown. "John Bull (left), a stout countryman wearing jack-boots, rides (right to left) through a wood on a wretched hack, ready to fall under his weight. Pitt kneels on the ground (right) in profile to the left, aiming a blunderbuss (which is supported on crossed sticks) point-blank at John; it is inscribed 'Standing Army'. He masquerades as a beggar: his dress is tattered, on the ground is his hat, containing coins; he says: "Good Sir, for Charity's sake \ "have Pity upon a poor ruin'd Man; - \ "drop if you please, a few bits of \ "Money into the Hat, & you shall \ "be rewarded hereafter -" From his coat-pocket project a cocked pistol and a paper: 'Forced Loan in reserve'. He points to a document on the ground beside him: 'Humble Petition, for Voluntary - Contribution Subscriptions & new Taxes, to save the Distres'd from taking worse Courses.' John Bull has dropped his righteins and holds his hat, full of guineas; he looks with melancholy distrust at Pitt, but drops guineas into his hat. His horse, disfigured with sores, is evidently the white horse of Hanover, its head-band is red and blue, the Windsor uniform (cf. BMSat 8691, &c). From the bushes behind Pitt emerge the heads and shoulders of (right to left) Dundas, Grenville, and Burke, each with a pistol levelled at John Bull. Dundas wears Highland dress, Grenville peer's robes and a grenadier's cap with the letters 'Wm R' (cf. BMSats 7479, 7494, &c.): he looks down reflectively at Pitt instead of at his victim, implying that he is his cousin's henchman; Burke has a pen in his hat. "Burke (left) as a shambling beggar, holds out his hat towards the Duke of Bedford who looks between the folding gates of Bedford House, holding one side to keep them almost closed. Their words float upwards from their mouths: Burke says: ""Pity the Sorrows of a poor old Man, add a trifle to what has been bestowed by Ministry to stop my Complaints: - O give me opportunity of recanting once more! - Ah! remember me in your Golden Dreams! - great Leviathan of liberty, let me but play & frolick in the Ocean of your royal Bounty, & I will be for ever your Creature; - my Hands, - Brains, - my Soul & Body, - the very Pen through which I have spouted a torrent of Gall against my original Friends, and cover'd you all over with the Spray, every thing of me, & about me, shall be yours - dispence but a little of your Golden store to a desolate Old Man". "Pitt (right) stands stiffly in profile to the left, holding open a large sack-like wallet inscribed 'Requisition Budget'. He addresses John Bull, the central figure, a stout yokel, who holds out his breeches in his left hand to Pitt, while he touches his hat. The budget and the breeches pockets are full of guineas. Pitt says: "More Money, John! - more Money! to defend you from the Bloody, the Cannibal French - They're a coming! - why they'll Strip you to the very Skin - more Money. John! - They're a coming - They're a coming." Dundas, Grenville, and Burke kneel on the right, bending towards the 'Budget', each with his left hand in an opening in a vertical seam, eagerly grabbing guineas. Behind them is the stone archway of the 'Treasury', with its high spiked gate. Dundas, the most prominent, wears Highland dress and holds a Scots cap full of coins. "French troops march with fixed bayonets up St. James's Street, the houses receding in perspective to the gate of the Palace, which is blazing. In the foreground on the left and right are 'White's' and 'Brookes's'. The former is being raided by French troops; the Opposition is in triumphant possession of the latter. In the centre foreground a 'tree of Liberty' (see BMSat 9214, &c.) has been planted: a pole garlanded with flowers and surmounted by a large cap of 'Libertas'. To this pole Pitt, stripped to the waist, is tied, while Fox (left) flogs him ferociously, a birch-rod in each hand. Between Fox's feet lies a headsman's axe, bloodstained; on it stands a perky little chicken with the head of M. A. Taylor (see BMSat 6777). On the right is an ox, his collar, from which a broken cord dangles, inscribed 'Great Bedfordshire Ox' (the duke of Bedford); it is tossing Burke, goaded on by Thelwall, who holds its tail, and flourishes a document inscribed 'Thelwals Lectures' (see BMSat 8685). Burke flies in the air, losing his spectacles, and dropping two pamphlets: 'Letter to the Duke of Bedford', see BMSat 8788, &c, and 'Reflections upon a Regicide Peace', see BMSat 8825. Behind the ox, Lord Stanhope holds up a pole to which is tied, by a ribbon inscribed 'Vive l'Egalite', the beam of a pair of scales; this is balanced by the body of Grenville, suspended by his breeches, and by his head, suspended by the hair; both drip blood. Stanhope, in profile to the left, looks up with a pleased smile; Lauderdale stands facing him, raising his arm to applaud. Behind is an advancing band of British Jacobins waving bonnets-rouges. Sheridan, with furtively triumphant smile, enters the door of Brooks's; a large porter's knot on his head and shoulders supports a sack: 'Remains of the Treasury £'; under his arm is another: 'Requisition from the Bank of England'. Beside the door (right) stands a pestle and mortar inscribed 'J. Hall Apothecary to the New Constitution Long Acre'; the mortar is filled with coronets. On the balcony above the door, Lansdowne, with his enigmatic smile, is working a guillotine; his left hand is on the windlass, in his right he holds up (towards Erskine) Loughborough's elongated wig; the purse of the Great Seal is attached to a post of the guillotine. On the left corner of the balcony rests a dish containing the heads of (left to right) Lord Sydney, Windham, and Pepper Arden, 'Killed off for the Public Good'. Behind stands Erskine, leaning forward and holding up in triumph a firebrand composed of 'Magna Charta', and a 'New Code of Laws'. On the right corner of the balcony four men stand watching the guillotine with quiet satisfaction: Grafton, in profile to the left; Norfolk, clasping his hands, and Derby. Only the hat and eyes of the fourth are visible. In the club windows behind, staring faces are indicated. The lamp beside the door is crowned with a bonnet-rouge. On the door-post a broadside, 'Marsoiles[e] [sic] Hymn', is placed above 'Rule Brit[annia]' (torn). In the street outside and in the foreground (right) is a basket containing the head of Dundas and a set of bagpipes; it is labelled 'To the care of Citizen Horne Tooke'. Beside it lies a bundle of documents labelled 'Waste Paper 2d pr £6'; they are 'Acts of Parliament, Bill of Rights, Statutes.' The left (east) side of the street is filled with goose-stepping republican soldiers, headed by a grotesque and ferocious officer, a drawn sword in his hand, who strides past the decollated head of Richmond, beside which lies a paper: 'Treatise upon Fortifying the Coast' (see BMSat 6921, &c). A grotesque and dwarfish drummer marches in front (left); on his drum is the cap of Liberty and the motto 'Vive la Liberté'. He is immediately outside the door of White's, up the steps of which French officers with fixed bayonets are pressing; one tramples on a prostrate and bleeding body, another transfixes the throat of a member; behind are the hands of members held up to beg for mercy. Other soldiers have reached the balcony and are using daggers; they push over the bleeding body of the Duke of York, indicated by his ribbon and the dice-box and dice which fall from him. The Prince of Wales falls head first, the Duke of Clarence is about to be stabbed. From a projecting lamp-bracket beside the door hang the bodies of Canning and Hawkesbury, tied back to back. Their identity is shown by a placard: 'New March to Paris by Betty Canning (an allusion to Elizabeth Canning, convicted of perjury, cf. BMSat 7982) & Jenny Jenkison'. The (broken) lamp is surmounted by a broken crown. On the club steps and in the street lie a broken 'EO' (roulette) board and playing-cards. "Pitt as Death on the pale Horse rides naked on the White Horse of Hanover, galloping over the prostrate bodies of pigs; other pigs, a multitude extending to the horizon, flee before him. On the horse's fringed saddle-cloth is a crown. Pitt is very emaciated, his flaming hair streams behind him encircled by a fillet inscribed 'Destruction'. In his right hand is a large flaming sword; in his left he holds the thread-like body of a scaly monster with gaping jaws, webbed wings, and serpent's tail. Behind him on the horse's hind quarters sits a naked imp wearing the feathered coronet of the Prince of Wales, with the motto 'Ich di[en]'. He grasps Pitt, and kisses his posterior; in his left hand he holds out a paper: 'Provision for the Millenium £125,000 pr An'. The horse's tail streams out, expanding into clouds, and merging with the flames of Hell which rise from the extreme right. In the tail and flames imps are flying, headed by Dundas holding a pitchfork; he wears a wig and plaid with horns and webbed wings. Behind are three imps: Loughborough, indicated as usual by an elongated judge's wig in back view (cf. BMSat 6796); Burke with webbed wings and serpent's tail; Pepper Arden [Identified by Wright and Evans as Lord Kenyon. The identification in the text is confirmed by Lord Holland.] wearing a large wig. In the foreground (right) Pitt's opponents are being kicked towards Hell by the horse's hind legs. Fox has just been violently struck in the face, and staggers backwards, clutching a paper inscribed 'Peace'. Sheridan lies prone, face downwards, hands raised, as if for mercy. Wilberforce sits on the ground clasping his 'Motion for a Peace' (see BMSat 8637). Behind Fox Lansdowne looks up from the ground, clenching his fists. "Hastings, in oriental dress, rides (right to left) a camel. He and the camel look down with dignified contempt at Burke (left), who fires a blunderbuss point-blank at the 'Shield of Honour' on Hastings's left arm. On the shield is a crown. Behind Hastings are Fox and North (right): Fox raises a dagger with burlesqued gestures and an expression of frenzied rage; North, very short and fat, clutches one of the bags behind Hastings inscribed 'Lacks Rupees added to the Revenue'; this is tied to another inscribed 'Rupees Do'. The three assailants are much caricatured and all wear armour; Burke, grotesquely thin and like some malignant insect, wears a Jesuit's biretta (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6026). He somewhat resembles the Don Quixote of British Museum Satires No. 7678, &c, cf. also British Museum Satires No. 7158; a wallet of 'Charges' is slung across his shoulder, bare feet project from the greaves which cover his legs. North wears his Garter ribbon over his armour, with a feathered helmet and top-boots. The point of a large sabre with a damaged blade projects through the tattered scabbard which is inscribed 'American Subjugation'. Fox wears the cloak of a conspirator over his armour (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6389, &c). Hastings (not caricatured) wears a jewelled turban, floating draperies, trousers, and slippers; his camel is heavily draped. On its back are bags, inscribed 'Saved to the Company' and 'Eastern Gems for the British Crown', with a rolled map, 'Territories acquired by W. Hastings'. "An election riot. In the foreground Sheridan (left) stands over Sir Sampson Wright who kneels on the ground in abject alarm. Sheridan holds him by the collar and shakes his fist in his face; from his pocket protrudes a paper inscribed 'Drury Lane'. On the right is a party of Guards, one pierces with his bayonet Fox's posterior, drawing blood. Fox, the central figure, prances in pain and alarm, his hat falling off. Behind, Townshend (?) and Burke hold up their hands in shocked surprise. One of the Guards deliberately pierces with his bayonet the posterior of his own officer, a lean foppish man resembling the officer in BMSat 7174.
