"The interior of Dulwich College Chapel. A stout man, probably the Master, wearing a gown, stands in a pulpit or desk (left), a large book before him, his eyes and mouth twisted in a sly leer. Below him (right) the figure of Edward Alleyne has risen from a tombstone and stands (half length) holding up the horizontal stone. He is surrounded by clouds. He wears hat, ruff, and a gown which differs from that of the living man chiefly in being furred. The figure is copied (in reverse) from the whole length portrait of Alleyne at Dulwich College. On the stone, beneath a coat of arms, is the inscription, a strip along the left being cut off by the lower margin of the print: 'Sacred | the Memory of | Edward Alleyne | Founder of this | College | Life Nov 26 | 1626 Æ 63 | Likewise | Joan his Dear | Wife who F | race 28 June 1623.' Copy in reverse of the first state of Plate 5 of Hogarth's 'The Rake's Progress' (Paulson 136): Tom and a wealthy old woman are being married in the dilapidated church of St. Marylebone. The bride has only one eye and growths on her forehead; the IHS on the wall behind her serve as a mock halo. In contrast the old woman is attended by a beautiful young woman who has already caught Tom's eye. In the background on the left, the elderly pew opener pushes Sarah Young, carrying Tom's child in her arms, and Sarah's mother; she shakes her keys in their faces to prevent them from entering the church to stop the marriage. Two dogs in the lower left of the image mirror the courtship of Tom and his bride; the courted dog has only one eye. The clergyman is assisted at the altar by a clerk, and a charity-boy kneels at the bride's feet offering a hassock. The Poor Box on the left is covered with a cobweb; there is a crack down the center of the slab with the Commandments on the wall behind the clergyman

The second print in the series "Four Times of the Day" is set outside St Giles's-in-the-Fields. On the right an elegant crowd leaves the French Huguenot church; they are dressed in the height of French fashion. Two women kiss on the far right in the customary French way. They are contrasted with Londoners on the left. The two groups are separated by a gutter down the middle of the road; a dead cat lies in the gutter foreground. The Londoners stand outside a tavern with the sign of the Good Woman (one without a head); a woman and man in the second-story window look surprised as the contents of her bowl are tossed out the window. In the foreground, left, under a sign with John the Baptist's head on a platter and reading "Good Eating", a black man embraces a servant girl and a small boy (evidently intended by his curly red hair to be identified as one of the Irish inhabitants of the area) cries because he has broken a pie-dish. A little girl squats as she eats the fallen pie off the ground. The clock in the steeple in the background reads 12:30.

Two of them, at the head of the procession, carry a small coffin with a cat's effigy on it. Behind them walks a crying woman with a handkerchief raised to her eyes. "An ancient Gothic church in the middle distance stands on a grassy hill inscribed 'Protestant Ascendency'; under the hill (left) is a cave, 'Cave of Catholic Ascendency', in which are barrels of 'Gun . Pow[der]'. A fat bare-footed friar walks away from the cave towards the picture-plane, carrying a lighted candle, and slyly laying a train of powder on the road to the cave. Standing round the church is a crowd of country people, listening to a parson who holds out to them a 'Petition to Parliament'. They are unconscious, not only that the ground beneath them is mined, but that men (right) are tugging at a rope looped round the steeple, which is about to crash. The rope-pullers are in the foreground (right); at the extreme end is Wellington with his back to the church, straining hard. Next is Peel, wearing an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15690) badly stained by the rope; Brougham, a broom-girl dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 14769, is next, with Mackintosh in Highland costume beside him. In front of them is Burdett, very tall and thin, holding up his hat and shouting 'Down with it--never mind the People' [see British Museum Satires No. 16058]. In front is O'Connell, in wig and gown, shouting, 'By St Patrick I've got the Rope over at Last.' Behind these principals are more men, tugging at a second rope. On a green field topping a cliff behind the church-breakers is Eldon wearing a smock and guiding a plough; he turns to shout to the petitioners by the church, who will be crushed by the falling tower: 'Look to your selves People.' Along the horizon (left) is a Papist procession with lighted tapers, the Host, crosses, a grotesque Pope, and figures under a canopy. It approaches St. Paul's whose dome rises above the sky-line. "The interior of a church (? the Chapel Royal) showing pulpit, side-gallery, and pews beneath the gallery. Wilkes (left) is the preacher, beneath him is his clerk, Pitt. At a right angle to the gallery is the royal pew (right), from which the King looks with earnest attention to the preacher. Queen Charlotte, her fingers to her mouth, also listens attentively. A lady-in-waiting and a courtier with a long wand (Lord Salisbury, the Lord Chamberlain) stand behind. The pew is decorated with the royal arms and has a canopy. In the centre of the gallery sit the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Fitzherbert; he turns away from the preacher, looking at her. Behind him stands George Hanger; behind Mrs. Fitzherbert sits a man looking at Wilkes through a spy-glass. Between him and the royal pew are three men in legal wigs and gowns: Pepper Arden, Dundas, and (?) Kenyon. Between the Prince and the pulpit sit North (asleep) and Burke, looking intently at Wilkes; a lady (? Duchess of Devonshire) attempts to wake North. In the seats under the gallery sit parties of citizens, in general asleep or inattentive. Below the royal pew stands Fox on a low stool as a penitent draped in a sheet; he wears a placard inscribed 'For Playing Cards on the Lord's Day'. A stout lady with an aquiline nose stands near Pitt; with a raised whip she chases a number of dogs out of the church. She has some resemblance to the Duchess of Gordon, a friend of Pitt. Immediately behind Mrs. Fitzherbert and between two Gothic windows is a wall-tablet inscribed: 'This Tablet is erected to the memory of the renowned Plenipotentiary who died by the bow string a short time after his return to Algiers. Two maiden ladies of this Parish who tasted exquisite felicity from his Prowess, dedicate this frail memorial to his loved memory'. Cf. British Museum Satires No. 7935, &c. "Dissenters are engaged in burning churches and attacking the clergy. In the foreground a stout bishop on his knees is being kicked and assailed by men with bludgeons; beside him is a book: 'Refutation of Dr Price'. He exclaims, raising his hands, "Murder, fire, thieves". One of his assailants says, "Make room for the Apostle of Liberty"; the other, "God assisting us nothing is to be feared". Under this group is inscribed: 'And when they had smote the Shepherd, the Sheep were scattered'. Behind (right) a Gothic building, from which extends a sign of the Mitre and Crown, is being demolished. Price sits astride on the beam supporting the sign; in one hand is an open book, 'Love of our Country', in the other is a firebrand inscribed 'The Flame of Liberty'. Beneath, two men in steeple-crowned hats are feeding a fire with faggots, whose flame and smoke, inscribed '39 Articles', ascends in a thick cloud. Next the burning building, and on the extreme right, is a porch (over a doorway) in which stands Fox, blowing a horn and pointing down to a placard over the doorway: 'Places under Government to be disposed of. NB, Several Faro and E.O. Tables in good Condition'. An adjacent placard is: 'day next charity sermon by Revd chas Fox'. A group of eager fanatics with lank hair rushes towards the doorway, holding up to Fox money-bags inscribed '30.000', '10.000' and '20.000.' In the foreground (right) are two fanatics struggling for the bag of the Great Seal; one raises a mace inscribed 'Brotherly Love' to strike his opponent; under his foot is a paper: 'Repeal of the Test Act'. In the background (left) is a group of figures engaged in demolishing a church with pickaxes; a rope pulls over the cross on the steeple.
