Abstract:
In a cobbler's workshop a shoemaker has seized his wife by the arm and is about to beat her with a leather strap. Her partly laced stays are being tightened by the weight of the cobblers hammer. She wears her hair in the monumental fashion, and her high heels are visible beneath the hem of a quilted skirt. To the left is a chair beneath a casement window, while a bird in a cage is suspended from the ceiling on the right

A small-waisted lady with towering coiffure topped by a beribboned hat stands in her boudoir holding onto post of canopy bed, as her footman, bracing his foot on her rump, tightens her stays. A decorative carpet is visible underfoot, and her dressing table may be seen to the left

"Margery in stays and petticoat seated before her dressing-table holds the monstrous erection on her head. Her father, Inkle, seated on a chair (right), watches in astonishment. A maid stands by an open door (left) holding the cock which has been robbed of its tail-feathers, some of which lie on the ground, others adorn Margery's head-dress. "A man (right) in shirt and breeches is being laced into stays by a shorter man who stands behind him. The taller man is knock-kneed and has some resemblance to the Duke of Grafton. On the ground is a chased goblet to which a label is attached, "Duplicate 5. 5. 0." The valet or stay-maker is dressed in the prevailing macaroni manner."--British Museum online catalogue
