"Satire on Napoleon's defeat, abdication and retirement to Elba. in a makeshift-looking room, a huge, hairy devil approaches Napoleon at right, holding a trident and proffering a noose, saying, 'Master Boney the favour of your company is requested -'; Napoleon, at left, hurriedly rising from his 'Camp stool' and pulling on his breeches, replies, 'I'll be with you in a crack'; a skeleton looms up behind him, at the same time holding back Joseph Bonaparte who tries to escape through an open door at left, his crown falling off, the skeleton apprehending him, 'Stop thief'. By the side of Napoleon's throne-like stool, a stoppered bottle labelled 'Composing draught', a glass and a crown, at his feet his hat and sword; on a table beside the devil are other suggested measures for suicide: pistols, a dagger, a smaller demon holding out a cup labelled 'Genuine Jaffa poison', a dish of 'Opium', an axe, a paper lettered 'Perhaps you would prefer drowning'; underneath the table are trunks lettered 'Military chest / Hospital chest / Diamonds'."--British Museum online catalogue

"The Frenchman sits in profile to the left, on the knee of the Devil (right), who kneels on one knee to support him, and steadies him by encircling his body with his right arm. The Devil is nude and muscular, with large feathered wings; he grins delightedly, left arm raised. His protégé, who is ragged but fashionable and not a sans-culotte, though wearing a bonnet-rouge, holds on his knee a frothing chamber-pot, and blows soap-bubbles from a long pipe. Other bubbles of varying sizes float to the left, filled with close ranks of infantry and inscribed with their places of destination. 'Old England' issues from the pipe; the others are: 'Vienne', 'Flanders' (the largest), 'Rome', 'Prussia', 'Hanover', 'Amsterdam', 'Sardinia', 'Petersburg'. Beneath their feet are papers: 'Asignets'. The scene is near the coast; at the water's edge sit three (Dutch) frogs, their backs to the two figures, saying, "Oh Dear what can the matter be. In a room reminiscent of a magician's study, the King, dressed in a cloak as Friar Bacon (a necromancer of popular fable), evokes visions of the royal power while the brazen head speaks. Each vision is represented by a large medallion inscribed, "Constitution," and shows a different balance of power between the king and both houses of Parliament. On the left, Fox, Burke, and North, peek in through an open door, appearing alarmed. On the right, a number of men walk down the "back stairs." The first of them, carrying a conspirator's lantern and led by the devil, is Lord Temple

"Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." Heading to a printed broadside in support of Queen Caroline, with a depiction of the Queen in the upper left, riding in a chariot pulled by a lion under a banner reading "Innocence and Triumph." The Italian witnesses against her are being led in chains to the gallows, the man at the back of the line remaking "This is past a joke O! Majocc"; a hangman smoking a pipe awaits them at the top of a ladder, noose in hand. Three figures with bags over their heads are already hanging, with a fourth hanged figure being fed by a devil with a pitchfork into the flaming mouth of a demon on the right, a "Green Bag" falling into the flames next to him. Another victim is skewered by a second devil standing inside the demon's mouth; the words "Milan Commission Receiving Office" are written amid the flames. A John Bull figure with a walking stick watches the scene from the right, remarking: "Well now if this h'ant a sight that pleases John Bull - Go & be hang'd to ye you Italian scoundels - come to swear an innocent womans life away."
