"Satire on Lord Bute and his political patronage. A view of a large garden with a tree at its centre at the top of which sits Bute holding two baskets of "golden pippins"; a devil with two serpentine legs sits on a low branch to right, excreting gold coins into the arms of a man with a fox's head (Henry Fox); to left, Princess Augusta climbs a ladder resting against the tree and reaches out to take an apple from the French ambassador, the duc de Nivernois, who sits beside the devil. Cumberland, wielding a large axe, is in the process of chopping down the tree saying "I'll cut you up root and branch". A group of Scots stand behind the tree waiting for fruits to fall, another stoops at the foot of the ladder to pick up an apple and glance up the princess's skirts; two prosperous gentlemen stand to the side holding baskets of fruit. A winged figure of Father Time flies towards the tree from the left while, on the right, a be-wigged devil (Mansfield) flies away squirting liquid from a clyster at a Charles Churchill who sits on the garden wall waving a stick; Temple and Newcastle climb over the wall into the garden and Pitt holding a flaming sword leaps down to attack a group of Scots. On the left of the scene, a cock standing on a dunghill is approached by a monkey (the Duke of Bedford, ambassador to Paris) carrying a paper lettered, "Articles of Agreement between John Bull & Lewis Gallus". Beyond, two further Scots carry off a bulging sack and the Union Flag. "A complicated and fantastic design. The title implies the annual election of East India directors on the second Wednesday in April (11 Apr. in 1827). The Directors, twenty with portrait heads, with one or two shadowy heads behind, have wolves' paws, and wear, below their shoulders, sheeps' fleeces inscribed Golden Fleece or Fleece. In the middle sit the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, two profiles joined Janus-like. One (Lindsay, the Deputy), in profile to the left, says: Adsum qui feci in me convertite ferrum [sic]. The other (Sir G. Robinson, the Chairman), says: Nostrum sex sumus, discedentes lucemus et aucto splendore resurgemus [he is one of the six retiring Directors, to be re-elected after a year]. Before him are a book, Stamp Office Ledger. This could a tale unfold; a print of a man carrying a globe on his back (he was Chairman of the Globe Insurance Office), and papers: Joint Stock Companies and Morning Paper. In another presidential chair (right), at right angles to the Directors, sits a fierce-looking man with bull's horns holding a scourge inscribed The Board of Controul [showing he is Wynn, President of the Board]; he says: These wolves in sheeps cloathing must not take all the prey, give us John Bulls share. Facing him from the extreme left is a man at a slightly lower desk, who says: We care not a jot for the court of Proprietors. In the foreground are the Proprietors, grouped in three categories of animals. A pack of large dogs, 'the requisitionary pack', with human (portrait) heads, runs forward from the right, where there are circular tiers of benches (as used by the Proprietors on Court Days). The foremost is Cato, saying, Chairman you are all out of order, as to your lawyers I put them all at defiance. At his feet are papers: He gave him a Roland for his Oliver; A free Press, and Universal Knowledge. Next is Cæsar, saying, We are allowed in Parliament to ask questions Nemo nos impune lassessit [sic]. Argus [? Hume], with National reform in Church and State at his feet, asks: I am my own dog whose are you?. Cerberus answers: I am the House Dog but to your pack Adieu [perhaps James Rivett Carnac, Director-elect in place of Bosanquet]. Jason [? Capt. W. Maxfield], leaping over a paper inscribed The Bombay Marines Lamentations over their unmerited sufferings, says: I care not a fig for your majorities while truth, reason, and justice are on my side. Mad Tom says: One gymnastic leap would place me within the bar before you could say Jack Robinson. The last dog, P. Pry [see BM Satires 15138], its head obscured, barks at Wynn: Bow, Wow wow! "The Knave of Clubs, 'Pam', sits in state in a ramshackle attic, one foot resting regally on a footstool. He is faint-hearted and melancholy and turns to a dapper little man (Sir Walter Stirling) at his right hand, who is supported by the Devil. He says: "I'm going to Hastings give me some Sterling No Tokens." Stirling, who holds an open book and is prompted by the Devil, says: "Let Us Pray," with a cynical smile. The Devil says: "Honestly if you Can?!!--but get Money." A hideous old woman, grotesque and ragged, offers him a glass, saying, "Try if Brandy won't save you." Behind the Devil, and on the extreme left, stands a burlesqued, knock-kneed lawyer, closing one eye in a cynical grimace; he holds a large pen and a paper headed 'The Last Will & Testement [sic] of Pam'. The room has the signs of squalor characteristic of the period: bricks showing through broken plaster, raftered roof, check bed-curtains, a broken chair, with broken jug and plate on the floor. Ragged stockings and a night-cap, &c. hang from a string across the fireplace (right), and on the mantelshelf are a candle in a bottle, a saucepan, medicine-bottle, teapot, and cup. "The Devil (right), in the foreground and much larger than the other figures, stands Asmodeus-like on a house-top (cf. British Museum Satires No. 16160), overturning with a long pole a dinner-table and upsetting the guests who fall on clouds of Dust. He is a grotesque muscular creature with goat's legs, barbed wings and tail, and looks round with a triumphant grin at the spectator. The guests are also assailed by harpies, little winged men, whose bodies terminate in barbed and scaly tails. One of these (Corder), holding a long bill which rises into the air above him, assails a man (Roach) mounted on a cockroach and holding up a book inscribed Parish Acct; he is The Grand Carver mounted on his Cockroach.; from the cockroach's antennae hang two big keys, and it emits a tail-blast inscribed We are of the Select, against his assailant. The latter holds out a paper inscribed Majority 7 and says am I not the Elect. Another harpy holding out a constable's staff flies menacingly towards the cockroach, saying, By St Thomas I cheque this. Roach exclaims: I tell you it's all a farce so we have taken the liberty to Cribb the Books Keep the Keys tight Cockey. A third harpy threatens the feast with a pair of spurred cavalry boots, saying you will Do-Well to give in, showing he is T. W. Dow (a boot-maker of York Street, Covent Garden. P.O. London Directory, 1822), see British Museum Satires No. 15528. A fourth has seized a paunchy Vestryman by the nose; the victim screams Oh my Nose--Rose Water rose water--oh oh oh-- From the table fall birds, hare, tureen, decanter, pineapple, &c. The dust forms a background, and is inscribed Dust for the Eyes of the Parishioners; looming through it is the façade of St. Paul's, Covent Garden. The bill held by Corder is headed Dinners. "Satire on the jockeying for position of the European powers in early 1740. A race-course on the sea-shore with a variety of animals and riders representing different countries: first comes Cardinal Fleury (France) falling from his fox which has stumbled at the winning post on "[Baron] Sinclair's papers". Behind the fox stands the devil holding a sheet of paper with a picture of five ships, lettered "Baltic Sea", an allusion to the French failure to form an alliance in that region. The devil pulls down one of the scales hanging from the umpire stand; the heavier scale represents the Imperial allies with swords, coins, a picture of the Imperial eagle and a note reading "ballance of power", while the lighter one holds objects connected with France and Spain, a cardinal's hat, mask, fox, and notes of "50,000 livers" and "10,000 pistoles" as well as a paper lettered "Mediation". On the umpire stand, America is in conversation with Africa while Europe embraces Asia for the sake of "Protection [of]Trade". Further to the left stands Captain Jenkins holding out his severed ear. Behind Fleury's fox runs the Spanish wolf, its rider unseated by the British lion's lashing tail, lettered "No Search Free Trade". The Russian bear, ridden by a man with a scimitar, follows; the bear kicks its hind legs at the Turkish elephant that is draped with a cloth lettered "Belgrade" in reference to the recent ceding of that city to Turkey. The sultan stands behind the elephant, offering a bag of money to a Frenchman wearing a bag-wig; a monkey also wearing a bag-wig, representing France, crouches in front of the bear. A Dutchman, smoking a pipe, stands beside a distance post having abandoned the race; his boar is laden with trade goods. Behind, on the left, the devil and a fool lead a group of Roman Catholic bishops, roped together, towards a closed building labelled "Conclave" where they will elect a successor to Pope Clement XII. In front of them seven men representing the European powers are seated at a round table with papers lettered "Alliance" and "Sinclair"; Cardinal Fleury turns aside towards another devil asking, "Extricute me now & I'm yours for ever". Further forward, a British herald, supported by classical female soldiers, blows a trumpet; beside them Fleury raises the front of his robe attempting to catch billowing smoke, lettered "Universal Monarchy". In the foreground, Time sits on his hour-glass holding a paper with a picture of a wolf dressed as a cardinal; rats chew at the bottom of the sheet; Fortune looses her grasp of Theodore of Corsica who throws his orb after his crown as it flies off on outspread wings; a British bulldog savages a Spanish wolf while a French fox runs off behind a bush; Captain Coram shows the plan of the Foundling Hospital to a woman and child seated on the ground; a Catholic ecclesiastic wrings his hands saying, "Ye have taking away my Gods, what have I more"; a man bends down to lift a chest full of "10000 pieces of Eight"; Emperor Charles VI rides on an eagle towards the finishing post, holding a shield with the British coat of arms in front of him while a shield with the fleur-de-lis falls to the ground; he is preceded by Charles Albert of Bavaria, fully armed on horseback, and carrying a shield with the motto, "Never conquered"; in front of him, a French ambassador kneels pleading with the British lion who tramples on a shield with the fleur-de-lis and prepares to fire a cannon. At lower right, Britannia pushes aside France (a woman in classical dress with a helmet, and a cock at her side holding out a paper lettered "Mediation") and points to a map showing the island of Cuba offered by a British herald and a sailor. In the background, to left, is the bay of Cadiz in which the Spanish fleet is shut up, British ships sail freely on the sea; a nymph holding a pennant lettered, "Quatuor Maria Vindico" (I claim the four seas), rides a dolphin; beyond are the island of Cuba and distant mountains.
