The British officer sings: T'was You Sir-Hew - Twas Hew. that let the French Escape, That makes you look so blue Sir-Hew Sir Hew! He and the Portuguese (perhaps Freire) point minatory hands at Dalrymple, whose face is painted lead colour. "Sheridan leads the forces of the professionals against the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society, who are performing on a small, elegant stage, rising (without orchestra) from the boards in the foreground where these enemies advance. He is dressed as Harlequin; the tight chequered dress (slightly torn) accentuates his obesity; an empty purse hangs from his belt; in his left hand is a hat with a tricolour cockade (emblem of Jacobinism). In his right hand he flourishes a large pen whose feather makes wide swirling curves, terminating in firework-stars, and inscribed with the names of newspapers: 'Courier', 'Morning Post', 'Morning Herald', 'Morning Chronicle'. He is masked, to indicate that he has been writing anonymous squibs against the Pic Nics. The swirls of his pen partly obscure a figure of Comedy, meretricious, and half-naked, holding up a mask which decorates the left pilaster of the proscenium. The actors follow in characteristic attitudes. Kemble (as Hamlet) wearing a ribbon, ranting in tragedy, directly behind Sheridan, staggers back with legs astride, both arms raised. On the left is Mrs. Billington, singing as in BMSat 9765, left hand on her breast. Mrs. Siddons (? as Lady Macbeth) clutches a dagger. Behind is the head of Lewis (see BMSat 9915), with a comedian's smile, wearing a cocked hat. Crowds of actors pressing on from behind (left) and in deep shadow, are indicated by arms holding up banners; the chief one with the head of 'Shakespeare', badly torn. Others are 'Otway Rowe'; 'Kotzbue', and 'Schiller', both tricolour (indicating the supposedly revolutionary tendencies of modern German drama, cf. 'The Rovers' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', and BMSat 7054); 'Jonson', 'Congreve', 'Addison'. Mack throws down his sword and two keys labelled 'Keys of Ulm'; beside him are a standard with the Habsburg eagle, a bundle of muskets, and a paper: 'Articles to be deliver 'd up - I. Field Marshall 8 - Generals in Chief 7 - Lieutn Generals 36 Thousand Soldiers - 80 Pieces of Cannon - 50 Stand of Colours 100000 Pounds of Powder 4000 Cannon Ball.' Napoleon, very small, is perched on a large drum on which is an imperial crown and the letter 'N'. He points with his sabre to Mack, with the left hand to his three Grenadiers, saying, "There's your Price! There's Ten Millions! - Twenty!! - it is not in my Army alone, that my rescources of Conquering consists!! - I hate Victory obtain'd by effusion of Blood!" Mack answers, his eyes on a money-bag, " - and so do I too! - what signifies Fighting when we can settle it in a Safer way!!!" His pigtail flies upwards, showing the violence of his obeisance; so do those of the generals who follow him. Behind them are the towers of a high fortress bristling with guns; their seeming impregnability points the satire. "A scene from Act V of Murphy's play as performed at the private theatre of the Duke of Richmond at Richmond House, on 20 April 1787 and subsequently. Lovemore (Lord Derby) stands between Mrs. Lovemore (Mrs. Damer), who holds his right arm, and the Widow Belmour (the fat Mrs. Hobart). Beside the Widow, and on the extreme right, stands a very thin man dressed with exaggerated foppishness, his hat under his arm; he says, "As the man says in the Play your Lordship is right welcome back to Denmark". He is Sir Brilliant Fashion, played by the Hon. Richard Edgcumbe. Mrs. Damer says, "This is Lord Etheridge Madam", and Mrs. Hobart answers, "No Madam this is Lord Lovemore"; the speeches have been transposed by an engraver's error. In a stage box on the extreme left sit the Duke of Richmond and a lady (the Duchess?) holding an enormous muff, her high coiffure much exaggerated. The box is decorated with a group, two crossed cannon, lying on a plan of a fort, with a kettle-drum, surmounted by a laurel wreath, an allusion to Richmond's unpopular scheme for fortifying Portsmouth and Plymouth, see BMSat 6921, &c. The ladies have tiny faces, framed in elaborately dressed hair, which contrast with Lord Derby's large head.
