On the opposite side of the street is a pawnshop where Melville, in bonnet and plaid, looks out over its half-door. Can are fired from the battlements of the gate at the soldiers, some of whom lie dead or wounded. In the foreground an officer (mounted), in conversation with others, asks: "where is the General"; others say: "go look for the General"; "Find the General"; "why the General is lost". A Highland officer, taking snuff (right), slyly; "I dare say he is varra safe." From the country (left) three mounted men gallop, all saying, "I come for Orders". In the background Whitelocke's head and shoulders are seen peeping over a hillock on the extreme left. He says: "He that fights and runs away, May live to fight another day, But he thats in the Battle slain, Will never live to fight again". Abstract:
"George IV, seated on the throne, watches a display of jovial fraternization between John Bull and Pat, who dance, holding hands, each holding up a hat decorated respectively by rose and shamrock. A lanky garland of (thornless) roses and giant shamrocks drapes the crown on the back of the throne; one end is held up by Wellington (right), on the King's left, the other by Peel on his right, so that the King is framed by it. John Bull is an obese and drink-blotched "cit", with a snuff-box inscribed 'Irish' in his waistcoat pocket. Pat is a ragged Irish peasant, his bare legs swathed by twisted straw; his shillelagh lies on the ground; he looks with a broad but appraising grin at J. B., who sings: "Together reared together grown, Oh! let us now unite in one, Let friendship rivet the decree, Nor bigots sever Pat and Me!!!" Two discomfited 'bigots' depart on the left; one is a gouty parson using a crutch, with a 'Petition against Concession' hanging from his pocket, cf. British Museum Satires No. 15661, &c. The other is a Catholic bishop in robe and mitre. They say: 'It's time for us to be off.' Above their heads flies a figure of Discord, her hair consisting of snakes which spit flame towards J. B. A satire of a Gretna Green marriage, taking place in front of smithy's shop. Erskine, disguised in woman's dress with a huge feathered bonnet over a barrister's wig, holds the right hand of a demure-looking woman, modishly dressed and apparently pregnant. He holds a paper: 'Breach of Promise'. With them are three young children. The smith wears Highland dress; he holds a red-hot bar on the anvil and raises his hammer, saying, "I shall make a good thing of this Piece at last." Erskine says: "I have bother'd the Courts in London many times, I'll now try my hand at the Scotch Bar--as to Miss C-- she may do her worst since I have got my Letters back." The woman says: "Now who dare say, Blacks the White of my Eye." In the background (right) a young woman rushes down a slope towards the smithy, shouting, "Oh Stop Stop Stop, false Man, I will yet seek redress tho you have got back your letters--" Beside her is a sign-post pointing 'To Gretna Green'. A little boy with Erskine's features, wearing tartan trousers, stands on tip-toe to watch the smith; on the ground beside him is a toy (or emblem), a cock on a pair of breeches. A little girl stands by her mother nursing a doll fashionably dressed as a woman, but with Erskine's profile. Another boy with a toy horse on a string stands in back view watching 'Miss C'. Behind the smith is the furnace; on the wall hang many rings: 'Rings to fit all Hands.'

"A huge bull, snorting fire, rushes with lowered head towards a French fort (left) from which cannon-balls descend upon him. Beneath the fort sansculottes on one knee fire at the bull while standing French soldiers, correctly dressed, also fire. On the fortress stand Frenchmen, firing and waving their hats; they shout: "Vive la republic, Blood & plunder, no Quarter to John Bull!" A huge tricolour flag has a staff surmounted by a skull. To the bull's back is strapped a bundle inscribed 'Debt Debt'. One horn has been shot off and lies on the ground. To his left hind leg is chained a heavy weight inscribed 'Subsidies'. Nevertheless, he cries: "Now my brave Allies let us all stand firm together & make a bold push, & I'll be Answerable for the Event." But behind him (right) his allies have all turned their backs and are departing in directions indicated by signposts. A fat Dutchman smoking a pipe goes 'To Amsterdam', saying, "I care not who beats, I'll join the Strongest Party". On the extreme right Francis II and Mack in a two-wheeled gig, on which is the Habsburg eagle, are driving off 'To Vienna'. "Prince Leopold (right), in uniform, puts his head through a glassless aperture in a window in the door of his 'Grecian Establish[ment]--Co[burg]', to look intently at a fat Turk who stands in profile to the right, elaborately dressed and holding a long pipe with smoking bowl. The door, partly cut off by the right margin, is flanked by a Corinthian pillar and set in a wall on which are placards: 'This . Shop!!! will shortly open under entire new Management--Vivant [sic] Rex'; a Union Jack poster (partly covered); the Russian eagle, and a fleur-de-lis, the two last inscribed 'Loan'. "Prince Leopold sits enthroned, flanked by his new subjects; he wears uniform with a crown, and sits on a two-tiered circular dais in a chair of state, the seat of which is covered with giant thorns. Punctured and frightened, he grasps the arms of his chair with crisped fingers; his toes are drawn back, touching the ground, and he looks towards a savage-looking Greek (right) who kneels before him with a long knife held behind his back. A similar ruffian kneels on the left; others approach menacingly from the left, one smoking a long pipe and grasping a knife. They wear Greek costume with embroidered jackets and full white breeches. "A magician stands full face with uplifted sabre held over the heads of two figures from the past whom he has called up, and who stand within a magic circle. He displays them to their modern descendants, a tall stout Frenchman plainly dressed, wearing cocked hat and military boots, who stands with his arm on the shoulder of a thin, wretched, shambling, Englishman, small, ugly, and foppish, his hand thrust through an empty pocket. The magician has a beard, but features, cocked hat, consular dress, and sabre indicate Napoleon. He asks: "Are you satisfied Gentlemen?" The apparitions (left) are a grossly obese Englishman in old-fashioned dress, a cane hanging from his right wrist, and an ugly, tall, cadaverous, and foppish Frenchman holding a snuffbox. They say, respectively: "Is that my Grandson Jack? what a skeleton!!!"; "Ah mon Cousin, vat you eat de Beef & Plum Pudding!!" Their surprised successors exclaim: "Bless me! why I am a mere Stump of a man to him!!! and viable my Cousin look like de Frog & John Bull look like de Ox but Grace a Dieu times are Changed!!" A scene inside an apothecary’s shop, with a surprised looking apothecary standing behind the counter serving a shifty looking male customer wearing a Scottish bonnet cap and tartan trousers. Behind the counter is a labelled drug run (a set of drawers for storing medicinal ingredients) and labelled drug jars (for storing prepared medicines); on and in front of the counter are pestles and mortars. The shop has carboys and drug jars on display in the windows to the right. The apothecary holds a plaster iron in his hand and is in the process mixing a preparation. They have sly, twisted expressions. Melville (left), weeping, clutches the back of the speaker's coat. "A fantastic scene takes place in a cobbled street between two buildings: a large house (left) with the words 'London / Coffee / House' in huge letters above the ground, first, and second floors respectively; and (right) 'The London Tea House' on a façade above the shop-front of the 'Genuine Tea Company' [at 23 Ludgate Hill]. From a centre first-floor window of the latter steps a winged figure resembling Fame, blowing a trumpet from which issue the words 'No Adulteration'. A Chinese, resembling the figures on the trade-cards of tea-dealers, who seems to have walked out of the shop, holds a firebrand inscribed 'Pro Bono Publico' to an open tea-chest inscribed 'Chinese Gunpowder', the contents of which are exploding in flashes inscribed 'Genuine Tea' and terminating in black clouds, so as to tilt over a huge kettle inscribed 'Steam Engine' (which fills the greater part of the design and against which also Fame directs her blast), from which rise clouds of steam surrounding many little men who look out of the (lidless) kettle. The spout is inscribed 'Exchequer' and from it men (tea-dealers) are being poured head first into a china tea-pot (left) on which is a Chinese pattern: a tree with two branches, one inscribed 'To the Ks Bench', the other (in reversed characters) 'To Newgate'. One exclaims: "There was No Tea in the composition!!!!! yet they fined me £2320!!!" Another: "It's never too late to mend." Round the tea-pot lie bundles inscribed respectively: 'Clover & Ash'; 'Sloe leaves'; 'Verdigrease'; 'Potatoe Parings'; 'Dutch Pink'; 'Elder leaves'. Behind the spout is the word 'Bohea'. Other tea-dealers are falling from the kettle; one says: ""I wish to retrieve my Character" / "and I think that it is fair we / should All be Tarred" / with the same Mop.!!" vide report of the Meeting." Another: "We have been togathe [sic] & we'll go togather." In the centre of the tea-dealers emerging from the kettle is one represented by a chair with human head and arms, showing he is their Chairman (one Bedwells) and that a meeting of tea-dealers is represented: he holds out a paper: 'Tea paper Resolved--00000 Resolved--00000'. He says: "Gentlen, Unless we can make our Tea, a little better, depend upon it, we shall all go to pot! I am quite affected by it already-- but I hope I shall go to Bed-well." Beside him is a canister inscribed 'Ludgate Hill Gas'; on this sits a bird, chirping up at him. One of his audience says: "Aye, aye, we shall all be Dished"; another asks: "who calls, me a-ber-y." A man answers: ""I, said the Sparrow" vide Cock Robin." A man with an axe for head (? Axford): "I wish to Ax, if anybody can afford to sell cheaper?" The other speakers appear also to indicate their names: "Sharps the word"; "I'll be Secretary, for I'm the Man for a Brown Study"; "who talks about sloes & black Berries"; "Come down with your Dust: I'm Treasurer"; "This is a bad Day for us--O, it will play the devil with us this Winter"; "Let's Marshall ourselves against this new Tea Compy"; "I lament this exposure, it makes me as melancholy as a Gibbs [the s scored through] Cat." Some look from the right of the kettle towards the new shop: one (? Shaw) says: "who cares a Button?--'Shaw!"; others: "Let's throw as much dirt at Concern [sic] as we can"; "Take care you don't splash your self"; "That's right! [? Wright] pelt away, never mind dirtying ourselves." Other speeches rising in the steam are: "Mr Chair man I consider this a Second Gunpowder plot it is evidently so as they opened on the 5th of November"; "Suppose we meet in Holborn"; "Although the Names of certain persons have been suppressed in the public prints there is no doubt but the Commissioners of Excise will give facility to the exposure of every delinquent coming under thier notice--see report of the Meeting." A little boy stands below looking up at the kettle; he says: "My eye! how the scum bubbles up to the top!" On the ground (right) sits a street-seller with a large bundle of papers under her arm inscribed 'Resolutions of the T. Trade--&c &c.' Beside her are other papers: 'Resolutions, &c.' and 'Tea Paper'. She holds out a straw, saying, "Who'll buy my ha'porth of Straw?-- for my part, if I could get good Tea I should not care a straw who I bought it of!" Customers enter the shop of the 'Genuine Tea Company'. One lady on the pavement meets another, saying, "I am going to mak a purchase of this New tea Company." Her friend answers: "I have just been we may now I think ask each other to a Cup of Tea!" A grotesque dandy, in short loose trousers over high boots, inspects the shop through a glass, saying, "Excellent! establishment pon honor!!", while an old woman in a red cloak hurries in at the door, saying, "Now for a Good Cup of Tea once more." A companion plate to Le Départ (British Museum satire no. 12362), satirizing the haste of the English to visit France in 1814 and their gluttony and bad dressing. The Frenchman who cooks a cat is a subject of English caricatures on the favourite theme of the beggarly Frenchman and well-fed Englishman. In this print. "A lean Englishman strides on to the quayside from an (invisible) gangway leading to the deck of a packet, which is seen below (right), covered with the heads of passengers, looking eagerly upwards. The furled sails and rigging are on the extreme right; a dove holding an olive-branch sits on a spar. A jovial French cook leads the Englishman, who grasps his left wrist; he points to a doorway on the extreme left, below the sign 'Au Bien Venu'. He holds the white cotton night-cap which was the cap of the French cook, but is not foppish as in English caricature, but manly and sturdy. The traveller is a grotesque figure wearing a hat shaped like a flower-pot, [this hat appears in almost all satires on English costumes in Paris, c. 1814; it is worn by a man dressed à l'Anglais in No. 53 of the 'Bon Genre Series' (? 1813): 'Cheveux à Cherubin. Chapeau en pot à fleurs. Redingote en Robe de Chambre'; cf. J.-P. de Bérenger, 'Les Boxeurs', 1814: Quoique leurs chapeaux sont bien laids / Goddam! moi j'aime les Anglais] long tail-coat, wrinkled breeches, and long ill-fitting gaiters on very thin legs. His profile has an absurdly heavy chin (cf. British Museum no. 12364), and he registers eager expectation. On a flap projecting from a window beside the door are peaches, grapes, pears, &c. He is greeted by the smiling inkeeper wearing large wooden shoes stuffed with wool who holds out a menu; beside the innkeeper a positllion holding a whip climbs out of his large boots On the right, a fat servant carries two bottles of wine and four books; behind him another postillion drives the coach with two horses towards the right. In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. An image of a young Bacchus seated on a barrel has been chalked on the wall; a dog jumps up towards it. "A plainly dressed man with lank hair falling on his shoulders, bends over a dog, placing his left hand on the head of the trustful animal. With a large brush he applies a smoking liquid to its side saying, "Come here poor Dog! Thee shalt not say I called thee names, or beat thee, for that would be cruel!! but I will anoint thee with Oil, and moisten thy sides with my pure Linnement." The scene is in a yard with a high paling, outside an open door leading to the dispensing-room of the Quaker, evidently an apothecary. Just within the room is a large smoking jar of 'Oil of Vitriol'; on the door-step is a dish of smoking vitriol. Above are the neatly ranged jars, bottles, and drawers of an apothecary, with a pestle and mortar. "The Prince of Orange (left), dressed like a Dutchman in (English) caricature, kneels with arms extended imploringly at the feet of Princess Charlotte (a good portrait). He wears Apollo's wreath, decorated with small oranges, before him is his clumsy flower-pot hat, containing a paper: 'Rules for the game of ye Dutch Pins' (ninepins); beside this is a Jews' harp, a degraded form of Apollo's lyre. His breeches are enormously bulky, and a tobacco-pipe projects from a pocket. He sings: "Lovely Maid, assuage my Anguish! At your feet your true love sighs; Do not let your Dutchman languish, If you frown, alas he dies!" She answers, pointing to his breeches: "From what I feel, and what I see, There's nought about you that bewitches; Unless indeed a charm may be In a Dutchman's great big breeches!!!" She stands beside a table (right) at which she has been sitting. On this are her painting materials, pencil, brushes, cakes of water-colour, porcelain palette, and jar of water, with an open box. Abstract:
At the Gate of Calais, a fat monk is shown poking a very large side of beef carried by a thin cook; the label indicates that the beef is intended "For Madm Grandsire at Calais." On either side are two French soldiers, one of whom spills his bowl of thin soup as he gazes in amazement at the beef. In the foreground on the left, three market women with crosses hanging from their necks admire a skate in a basket of fish; on the right, two ragged men carry a large pot of soup while another drinks from a bowl, and a Scottish soldier cowers beneath an archway; in the middle distance, to left, Hogarth himself is seen sketching at the moment when a soldier's hand takes him by the shoulder; beyond, through the gate, is a religious procession

"Perceval, as Don Quixote, stands in front of the Treasury, giving his orders for the forthcoming session. Facing him, Ministerial members (right) stand at attention, clasping rolled documents, all inscribed 'Ministerial Military Exercise Aye & No', as if they were muskets; one is in Highland dress. A further phalanx in the background is on Perceval's left. He wears armour, with Mambrino's helmet (the barber's basin) and holds erect a tilting-lance, which serves as staff for the Royal Standard. His left hand, holding a 'Muster Roll', rests on his hip. Behind him, pen in hand, and with a pen behind the ear, the two Treasury Secretaries stand stiffly, each with a large book, one 'Names of Staunch Men', the other 'Names of Deserters'. On the extreme left and in the foreground George Rose stoops over a large 'Military Chest', filled with bank-notes, which he holds out towards the Ministerial troops. On the ground beside him lies a rose labelled 'A Rose in January'. Behind him, lurking in a gateway, is Melville, in Highland dress, with two similarly clad Scots peering over his shoulder. He says: "An Ye should want a set of braw fellows fit for ony service, I ha them here ready for ye". On Perceval's left is a mounted officer (Montrose) holding a paper inscribed 'Treaty for an Armistice for 14 days if Necessary'. Beside him is a mounted trumpeter. Perceval says: "Now my Lads lets see if you are perfect in your Exercise!!! You will stick close right or wrong". All answer "Aye. Nor refuse a good place when it is offered". All answer "No. Of course all I say is truth". All answer "Aye, Nor you wont let the Enemy Contradit me". All answer "No". "A grossly obese John Bull and his lean and ugly wife, both wearing hats, sit on upright chairs, gormandizing. The man holds a whole chicken to his mouth, taking a huge bite. The woman (left) faces him, biting a large melon which she holds with both hands to an enormous mouth. He is morosely savage, she is melancholy; both are gap-toothed. On the ground (right) by the man's chair are collected a ham or gigot, a large irregular (?) galantine, a raised pie: 'pâté de périgueux', a huge jar of 'vin de lafitte' round which four bottles are grouped: 'frontignac', 'Clos de Vouge[ot]', and '. . . seac'. Beside the woman are a basket and tray filled with grapes, peaches, and pears. Through a wide doorway (left) the street is seen with a seated fruit-seller who serves three grotesquely hideous Englishwomen. Two are lank and emaciated, one tries to stuff a big peach into an immense mouth, holding an armful of grapes and peaches; the other gnaws at a bunch of grapes held in both hands. The third, also with bulging cheeks, bites a peach. The fruit-seller's tray is empty; she holds out her last peach.
