"Broadside with four columns of prose and three woodcuts, one along the top with a line of 19 hanged persons, and in the centre two scenes, one of a man slitting the throat of a boy, the other of a man in prison surrounded by his weeping family."--British Museum online catalogue and "The text describes 14 different cases heard in April 1827, that resulted in the hanging of the person found guilty. With two large woodcuts beneath the title illustrating the murder and the discovery of the body. A third, smaller woodcut depicting the burial of the victim appears in the lower right, above a poem with the heading "A copy of verses": A horrid deed I will relate, but newly brought to light, a deed so foul and barbarous, you've seldom heard the like ..., The Radlett murder, also know as the Elstree murder. "Illustration to a song engraved in three columns below the title: A scene on the shore, with a frigate in the offing. A grotesque naval officer, with wooden leg and black patch over one eye, takes the wrist of a young sailor of feminine appearance who holds a pistol. In the background (right) a dead sailor lies across the body of a woman. The song relates that Billy Taylor was taken by a press-gang; his sweetheart dressed as a sailor to follow him, but discovered his inconstancy with 'a lady gay', and shot him With his fair one in his hand. The last verse:'When the Captain com'd for to hear on't He werry much applauded her for what she'd done, And quickly he made her the first Lieutenant, Of the Gallant - Thunder Bomb.'"--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
A scene from Horace Walpole's Gothic novel The castle of Otranto, with the characters Matilda and Theodore shown at center talking in a church, one on either side of the statue marking the tomb of Alphonso; Theodore wears full armor and Matilda wears an orange gown.
