A caricature on the prevalence of bribery during elections, most probably that of 1826. The distraught rejected candidate, shown full-length and facing left is red in the face and pulling at his hair. His election placard lies on the floor and two notes are visible on the mantelpiece above a grill with fireplace tools: 'Tavern expenses 500' and 'Bringing voters from London 800'. Through the window on the right, with flags flying, a cheering crowd carries the successful candidate in a chair above their heads

"Mrs. Clarke auctions commissions from a rostrum to a crowd of bidders, while the Duke of York acts as her clerk. All are unconscious of a net in which they are enclosed, and with which the Devil flies off into flames (right). Mrs. Clarke (right), in profile to the left, with raised hammer, holds out a paper headed Commission. She says: Going for no more than £500 a Commission Positively worth 5000. An officer, probably Dowler, see British Museum satires no. 11253, holds out his arms towards her, saying, my dear dear dear Angel Knock it down to me or I am ruin'd. Another says: Let the good Bishop [the Duke, see British Museum satires no. 11227] have the Game & we my Boy will have the Cream. The other applicants are in civilian dress; one says to the bidder: my dear fellow dont be so anxious for depend upon it these tricks will be Found out & all will be Lost. The Duke of York, in uniform, records the bids in a book, his pen resting on the figure 500. He says Thus am I content to record & ratify the Destruction of the Army, my Country & myself, rather than loose my dear DARLING to [cf. British Museum satires no. 11228]. Abstract:
"Heading to etched verses. Mrs. Clarke, seated on a dais, receives applicants for commissions who advance through a doorway (left). She sits on a drum, wearing a cocked hat and military sash over a white dress, and holds up a sword. A short fat soldier holds over her head a Union flag with the white horse of Hanover. Two soldiers stand at attention with fixed bayonets behind her, and a fat trumpeter blows his trumpet. Another Union flag, without the white horse, flies from the corner of the large dais. On the wall hangs a notice: 'Half-pay Commissions at Half Price for Ready Money'. The applicants press forward in a bunch, headed by a fat and gouty 'cit' hobbling on two sticks, behind whom is a chimneysweep. The first of three verses: 'Come all you brave Fellows who wish for Promotion. Wether Captain or Colonel or a General's your notion. A Warehouse I keep for the sale of Commissions, And our Prices you'll find will suit all conditions, You'll be treated with Honor if you secrecy mark Sir For my Master is Noble and I am his Clarke Sir, You'll be treated &c.' The last lines: 'But forget not the ready (Gold or Notes) for pray mark! My Master wants Money, & so does his Clarke. But forget not &c.' Abstract:
"John Bull, blindfold, stands on a massive truncated pillar holding the beam of a pair of scales. In one scale (left), near the ground, Mrs. Clarke sits composedly among a mass of papers, holding one inscribed My dear Dearest Dearest Darling [see British Museum satires no. 11228, &c.]. The others are inscribed: Sandon, Toyne [Tonyn], Dowler, Omeara, Carter, French, Knight, Clavering. In the other scale the Duke of York swings high in the air, and shouts down to three men on the ground: Save me save me Save my Honour [cf. British Museum satires no. 11269]. They haul hard at ropes attached to his scale, which they tilt sideways so that he is in danger of falling out. One, a drink-blotched bishop wearing a mitre, says: Pull away Pull away the Church is in danger; the other two say: Pull away Pull away we lose all our Places, and Pull away pull away we shall lose our Noble Commander. A crowd of people, most wearing Scotch plaid, stand before a mountebank's stage, holding out their hands to the charlatan, a caricature of Lord Bute who holds bags of money. Behind him on the floor of the stage is a chest filled with more bags of money. A woman in a Welsh hat, the Princess of Wales, looks out from the curtains of a bed in the back of the stage and listens with pleasure. A tall quack (T. Smollet) wears a fool's cap, a hornbook hangs from his girdle, and the newspapers The Briton rolled under his arm; at his feet are other copies of The North Briton and The Monitor

In the upper right, beneath the French flag, French troops and Indians attack English settlers and burn their homes as signs of general social and political corruption are illustrated in the foreground; each scene is numbered and explained in the key below the image. In the center a tower covered by a cloud, obscuring all but a crown, orb and scepter. Two counselors with goose heads standing gossiping, and two bishops play backgammon and drink spirits (wine?), one sits on a chair made from a bible and the other sits on am overturned model of a church. Two noblemen rob a countryman as he sleeps in his chair. Two senators count their bribes, one hiding the money in his 'pension'. The decline in manufacturing (trade) is symbolized by the idle loom, covered with cobwebs and labeled "To be sold cheape". A thin, starving seaman begs while behind him two common folk stand idly with their hands in their pockets. Abstract:
"A broadside satirising Robert Walpole with an etching in two parts. In the left-hand scene Frederick, Prince of Wales, stands with the Duke of Argyll and other gentlemen, pointing to the left where George II embraces Britannia. In the foreground, the grotesque figure of Walpole, wearing a coronet, kneels holding in five hands, bags of French and Spanish gold and another lettered, "I am Lord Corruption". Behind him stands his daughter, Lady Mary, toying with a coronet. On the ground beside Walpole, the French cock perches on the back of the exhausted Imperial Eagle, but the British lion watching the conflict growls, "Now I'm rousing". In the background, the white horse of Hanover kicks a man off a high rock; the man cries, "I'm lost"; a ship lies at anchor off Cartagena observed from another high rock to right by Admiral Vernon whose impetus towards the city is restrained by General Wentworth; below these two men sits Admiral Haddock chained to a rock (a reference to the limitation of his resources in dealing with the combined Spanish and French Mediterranean fleets). In the right-hand scene Walpole raises his hands in horror at the appearance in a cloud of smoke of the ghost of Eustace Budgell who holds out a paper described in the verses to left as a "black Account ...Full twenty Winters of Misdeeds"; on the table at which Walpole is sitting is a large candlestick and letters addressed "A son Eminence" (Cardinal Fleury) and "à don [Sebastian] de la Quadra" and a book on "The Art of Bribery". Budgell's ghost raises his hand above his head to point at a scene of a beheading in the background above which flies Time while Justice sits on a column beside the scaffold and a crowd cheers below; over a doorway to right is a portrait of a Cardinal, presumably intended for Wolsey who is mentioned in the verses on the right. In the foreground, the grotesque figure of Walpole, wearing a coronet, kneels holding in five hands, bags of French and Spanish gold and another lettered, "I am Lord Corruption". Behind him stands his daughter, Lady Mary, toying with a coronet. On the ground beside Walpole, the French cock perches on the back of the exhausted Imperial Eagle, but the British lion watching the conflict growls, "Now I'm rousing". In the background, the white horse of Hanover kicks a man off a high rock; the man cries, "I'm lost"; a ship lies at anchor off Cartagena observed from another high rock to right by Admiral Vernon whose impetus towards the city is restrained by General Wentworth; below these two men sits Admiral Haddock chained to a rock (a reference to the limitation of his resources in dealing with the combined Spanish and French Mediterranean fleets). In the right-hand scene Walpole raises his hands in horror at the appearance in a cloud of smoke of the ghost of Eustace Budgell who holds out a paper described in the verses to left as a "black Account ...Full twenty Winters of Misdeeds"; on the table at which Walpole is sitting is a large candlestick and letters addressed "A son Eminence" (Cardinal Fleury) and "à don [Sebastian] de la Quadra" and a book on "The Art of Bribery". Budgell's ghost raises his hand above his head to point at a scene of a beheading in the background above which flies Time while Justice sits on a column beside the scaffold and a crowd cheers below; over a doorway to right is a portrait of a Cardinal, presumably intended for Wolsey who is mentioned in the verses on the right. Abstract:
"Satire on the general election of 1722 showing a grand room with two long windows and a pier glass between; to the left of this is a screen with seven folds. On the right three men, one holding a staff of office, can be discerned behind the screen reflected in the glass. From the left side of the screen an electoral candidate walks towards a voter grasping him by his right hand and with his left slipping a purse into the man's pocket. The voter is identified in the verses as a member of a corporation in a borough where only such members could vote; his leg is shackled by a chain. His wife listens to a clergyman who stands in a doorway assuring her "bribery no sin". The devil hovers over the candidate touching the voter on the shoulder and holding a blank scroll. Two boys in the foreground point to the transaction, one holding a wooden shoe, symbol of the oppressive French regime. The screen itself is adorned with little stars, at the top the years 1715-1722 are marked on the seven folds and the names of various acts passed by the previous government, "Quarantine Act .../South Sea Act/Act to indemnify S.S.
