"Long, dressed as a funeral mute or mourner, stands full-face, legs apart, carrying four large boards like a sandwich-man (then "board-man"). Only his draped hat and eyes appear above the central board. In his hand is a staff draped in black which is inscribed 'Killing No Murder' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11371]. At his feet are many ducks, all angrily quacking: 'quack!!'; 'quack!!!'; or (one) 'cruel quack'. He says, quoting a nursery rhyme, 'Come, Dilly, Dilly, Dilly, come and be killed!!!' The principal board is headed 'To the Public', with the Royal Arms. Inscriptions: 'A Receipt of my Grandmothers | Decline Arrested | Consumption prevented | A Cure for all diseases | By The Simple | process of | Skinning Alive | protected by the | NOBILITY | and a House-Full of | Ladies | of the first Distinction | Dr Needy, Harley-Street | NO QUACKERY'. On both flanking boards are a grinning skull and cross-bones inscribed 'momento [sic] mori'; on one (left) are wine-glasses, tankard, and bottle and 'A Short Life and a Merry one'; (right) 'N.B. . Short Accounts make LONG Friends'. Behind is a funeral procession with two coffins, preceded by a duck. This passes the railings of a London square. Behind are houses, on one of which is a hatchment, and a church-steeple on which prances a tiny devil flourishing a trident."--British Museum online catalogue

"From the bustle and life visible on all sides it would seem that the period is fair-time, when the rustics and agricultural population of the vicinity in general flock into the town, holiday-making. A travelling mountebank has established his theatre in the market place; the person of the ingenious charlatan is decked out in a fine court dress, with bag wig, powder, sword, and laced hat complete, the better to excite the respect of his audience; he is holding forth on the marvellous properties ascribed to the nostrums which he is seeking to palm off on the simple villagers as wonder-working elixirs; while his attendants, Merry Andrew and Jack Pudding, are going through their share of the performance. One branch of the mountebank physician's profession was the drawing of teeth; an unfortunate sufferer is submitting himself to the hands of the empiric's assistant. The rural audience is stolidly contemplating the antics of the party, without being particularly moved by Dr. Botherum's imposing eloquence, these vagabond scamps being frequently clever rogues, blessed with an inexhaustible fund of bewildering oratory, and witty repartee at glib command. Leaving the quack, we find plentiful and suggestive materials to employ the humourist's skilful graver scattered around. In the centre, a scene of jealousy is displayed; the beguilements of a portly butcher are prevailing against the assumed privileges of a slip-shod tailor, who is seemingly tempted to have recourse to his sheers, to cut the amorous entanglement summarily asunder. On the left, the promiscuous and greedy feeding associated with 'fairings,' is going busily forward, and on the opposite side are exhibited all the drolleries which can be got out of a Jew pedlar, his pack, the diversified actions of customers he is trying to tempt with his wares, and the bargains for finery into which the fair and softer sex are vainly trying to beguile the cunning Hebrew on their own accounts. It seems probable that Rowlandson in his print of Doctor Botherum may have had a certain Doctor Bossy in his eye, a German practitioner of considerable skill, who enjoyed a comfortable private practice, said to have been the last of the respectable charlatans who exhibited in the British metropolis. This benevolent empiric, as Angelo informs us, dispensed medicines and practised the healing art, publicly and gratuitously on a stage, his booth being erected weekly in the midst of Covent-Garden Market, where the mountebank, handsomely dressed and wearing a gold-laced cocked hat, arrived in his chariot with a liveried servant behind. According to the old custom, the itinerant quack-doctor, with his attendant gang, was as constant a visitor at every market-place as the pedlar with his pack."--Grego

He is finely dressed and holds a cup in one hand. His medicine chest stands open behind him, and his hat hangs inside the hood of the chaise. To the right of the chaise is a hunchbacked (?) man, possibly Rock's assistant, or toady, under whose arm is a package of books lettered "Dr. Rock 52 ways f[ro]m Ratlife" . Among the the crowd gathered around Rock are, on the left, two soldiers, one with a sword and wearing spatterdashes who may be intended as a blind man, has his hand on the shoulder of a bald man who holds his hat in his hand, gazing distractedly at Rock; behind Rock is a man apparently on horseback; on the right, a pregnant gin seller who has a large open basket slung from her waist in which are glasses and wicker bottles, the basket is lettered "S[an]d[y]'s Public spirit" (a reference to the recent Act of Parliament relaxing the law against gin), a another poorly clad woman with a large fish (?) basket resting against her leg, and a man offering a coin to Rock. To the right of the chaise can be seen the pillar with a sun-dial and globe which stood in Covent Garden market. "A quack doctor (right) stands outside his house surrounded by a pyramid of bottles inscribed 'Velnos Syrup', one of which he holds up, demonstrating its virtues with a complacent smile to a band of rival practitioners (left) who are furiously threatening his barricade. Behind his head is inscribed : 'List of Cures \ In 1788,5,000 \ In 1789, 10,000'. The house is at the corner of 'Frith Street'; it has a porch inscribed in large letters 'Mr Swainson N. 21'. A surgeon threatens Swainson with a knife, raising also a leg to kick. A second surgeon kneels on one knee, also holding a knife and glaring ferociously; beside him is a basket of surgeon's instruments. Behind him is a man who directs an enormous syringe at the self-satisfied Swainson. An old man wearing spectacles holds up a 'Pill Box'. These assailants are dominated by a very stout man in the rear who holds up a pestle in one hand, in the other a mortar inscribed 'Mercury the only Specific'. Abstract:
Central scene shows rivalry between doctors and their respective quack remedies. A patient sits helplessly in a chair while proponents of different medicines brawl with each other, overturning tables and chairs. Beneath are a comic strip and a further six comic episodes. The scenes below show 'a few specimens of the public in general!!', while the six scenes at the bottom begin with a fat woman tending pots at a stove, 'Ruling the roost', and end with a black boxer in 'Drama. The miller & his men' and Each scene is subtitled starting top with 'sudden breaking up of a consultation' and ending bottom right with 'Drama. The miller & his men'. There is numerous lettering in the main central scene including top left: 'I say the man is in the last stage of consumption thro' a too frequent supply of Morrison's Pills instead of Leakes sillybrated pills, which would have saved his life'. In response another salesman replies: 'It's false fellow the 'vegetables' rallied him but taking a box of your rubbish afterwards threw him back'. Another vendor exclaims: 'You have completely ruin'd the patient with your vile sovereign remedies in short you've kill'd him - then he can't swallow any more of your patent quack medicines.- You have totally deprived him of his sense of hearing - then he won't hear your gammon in the shape of advice - you have destoryed his olfactory nerves - then he wont be able to smell your horrid physic - you have glinded him with your deadly narcotics - then he can't see any more of your imposing long bills - you have deprived him of his speech - then he can't call you a humbug - in short Dr Long you have destroyed all his organs of sense - then you can no longer play upon his credibility'. Other doctors mentioned in the lettering include 'Dr Jardan and his universal balm' and 'Dr Solomons' (Dr Samuel Solomon, inventor of the Balm of Gilead).

Among the crowd is a carter with his whip, a chimney sweep's boy, and an obese woman. On the platform behind the doctor are several invalids, including a man with a crutch. A sign attached to the platform reads "Doctor Van Cheatall."

"The interior of a poverty-stricken room. An old man (left) seated in a chair is rubbing one foot which rests on a low stool with the contents of a bottle held in his right hand. He wears a night-cap, his hat and wig hang on the back of his chair. A witch-like woman, wearing large spectacles, is seated by the fire, she holds on her lap the bare leg of a young man, and is about to apply to it the contents of a pot which she is stirring on the fire. He is yelling with pain. On the wall is a placard, "Dr Steers Opodeldoc for Chilblains." Poverty is indicated by the untidy bed, a broken casement window, and the character of the chimney-piece, on which is a lighted candle, a tea-pot, and a broken cup. A medicine vendor kneeling and praying. Doctor Rock (Richard Rock 1690-1777) was an itinerant medicine vendor who frequented the London areas of St. Pauls and Covent Garden. He was famous for his "anti-venereal, grand, specifick pill". He was satirised in several caricatures: W. Hogarth represented him in A harlot's progress pl. V; The march to Finchley; and The four times of the day, morning and "A fashionably-dressed man kneels in profile to the left at a large chest of 'Patent Medecines', on which is a duck with the inscription 'Quack. Quack. Quack' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 5766]. A hanging candelabra and a festooned curtain indicate wealth. A burlesque representation of the quack doctor James Graham (1745-94), who opened his 'Temple of Health' in the Adelphi in the autumn of 1779. Graham stands full-face; he holds in his mouth the end of the tail of a monkey which sits on his head. The monkey holds out a duck by one leg, which is saying "Quack Quack". Graham holds out in his right hand a circular box inscribed "Æthereal Pills". A medallion hangs round his neck, on which is a woman's head, inscribed "Female Historian". She is Mrs. Catherine Macaulay (see index) whom he treated at Bath, so gaining his first start. He stands between two gigantic men wearing large laced hats and long coats; one, "Gog" (left), in back view, the other, "Magog" (right), stands full-face holding a paper inscribed "Sketch of the Plan of the Temple of Health". These represent the gigantic footmen or porters who were among the attractions of the 'Temple' and who distributed bills advertising the establishment, see BMSat 6346 and Angelo, 'Reminiscences', 1904, i. 97. Between them, and above Graham's head, the words "Hail Wonderous Combination!" are etched. By the left margin of the print, two men are gazing at the spectacle, one clasps his hands in admiration or supplication. A greedy medical practitioner demanding a leg of bacon for payment from a poor family and "The interior of a room showing no trace of actual poverty. The invalid, a man, fully dressed but wearing a nightcap, sits in an upholstered arm-chair by the fire. A little girl stands at his knee; at his side on a tray or table are two bowls and a medicine bottle labelled 'as before'. The physician, a well-dressed man wearing a bag-wig, is about to leave the room (right); he puts coins into the hand of a young woman holding an infant. The room is papered, a half-tester bed with curtains stands against the wall. A sailor with a bandaged eye consulting a mercenary medical practitioner. The sailor describes his medical history in nautical terms. He refers to a skeleton suspended in a cupboard as the doctor's "messmate". and "Sailor and quack face each other in a consulting room. The sailor (left) has a clumsy bandage over forehead, one eye, and left cheek; he is dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 10894; under his arm is a cudgel, and in his hand a paper headed 'List of Cures'. Behind him (left) is an open cupboard containing a tall skeleton with goggling eye-sockets. With forefinger raised, warily pugnacious, he says: "You must know Doctor I have got a bit of a Confusion on my larboard cheek from a chance shot, and as I dont think it of consequence enough for our Ship's surgeon, I bore down to you, after overhauling a long list of your cures - but I suppose front the messmate in the Cabin there, you dont always make a return of the Killed and Wounded?" The doctor, in old-fashioned dress and wig, leans towards him with extended forefinger, saying, "Sir, my rule of practice is this, there is pen, ink, and paper, - sign a certificate of your cure, and I'll take you in hand immediately on paying down two Guineas!" Abstract:
An operator treating Ann Ford, a society lady, with "Perkins's tractors", for her venomous tongue and "An old maid is tied by arms and ankles to an armchair while an operator applies 'metallic tractors' to her tongue, using both hands. An iron clamp holds her head steady. She wears old-fashioned dress with a laced stomacher. From the doctor's pocket projects a paper: 'Fores [partly obliterated] Operator'. Rays of flame dart from the victim's tongue: 'Half-Hints', 'Innuendoes', 'Hypochrisy', 'Envy', 'Scandal', 'Detraction', 'Malignity'. Three young girls watch from the left: they say: "good Heavens? could you suppos my Aunt had such an envenomed Tongue"; "oh yes my dear there are many more such in our Town, if this good man cures all such Tongues he will deserve a Statue"; "Yes and all our young Friends I am sure will subscribe liberally". The room is that of the patient: on the right is a round table where spectacles have just been laid down; on it are writing materials, a large 'Bible', and a paper: 'Mem - not to forget at Miss Magpy's Tea party the hints respecting the Young Miss Tumid also the round appearance of Mrs Generous who was married last Week. Particulars Insinuate how Miss Lively lives so genteel When we cannot find out what resources she has------to take Care I do for Miss Bold who insolently said she did not believe the story of Miss Virtues Slip.' Beside it an open cupboard, with bunch of keys in the lock, shows decanters of 'Ratafia', 'Peppermint', and 'Caraway', four books: 'Duty of Man', 'Eloise', 'Sermons', 'Glass Cookery', and a large bottle of 'Nig' [gin], a flagon of 'Cherry Brandy', and a glass. A low screen with half-panels has on one leaf a flaming globe inscribed 'Observe the End'; the ray of 'Half-Hints' strikes the flames. On the screen sits a parrot. "A fashionable dentist is extracting the teeth of the poor in order to insert 'live teeth' immediately into the jaws of his patients. In the centre a young chimney-sweep sits in an arm-chair, over the back of which the dentist leans, holding the boy's head, and inserting an instrument into his mouth. Next (left) a lady sits in a similar chair watching the sweep with a pained and angry expression; she holds a smelling-bottle to her nose; she has just endured an extraction and is about to receive a transplantation. On the right a good-looking young lady leans back, her fists clenched in pain, while a spectacled dentist peers closely into her face, placing his instrument in her mouth. Behind her a lean, ugly, and elderly man wearing regimentals stands in profile to the right, holding a mirror in which he inspects his mouth with a dissatisfied expression. On the left a ragged boy and girl are leaving the room, both crying with pain: the girl inspects the coin in her hand. On the door is a placard: 'Most Money Given for live Teeth'. A placard on the wall is headed by a coronet and two ducks, indicating quackery: 'Baron Ron------Dentist to her High Mightiness the Empress of Russia'. Cf.
