- Abstract:
- "A burlesque of Fuseli's well-known picture illustrating 'Macbeth', i. 3. The three witches are Dundas, Pitt, and Thurlow, in profile to the right instead of to the left. Fuseli's drapery is replaced by clouds, and the three gaze with reflective and apprehensive intensity at the moon (right): the Queen's smiling profile in a brightly lit crescent faces them, enclosing the old moon, the darkened head of the King (eclipsed), with closed eyes in profile to the right. Each witch presses the fingers of his left hand (drawn with much expressiveness) to his lips (- 'each at once her choppy finger laying upon her skinny lips'); the outstretched left arm of Fuseli's picture is absent: they appear to be seeking knowledge of the future from the moon, not foretelling it."--British Museum online catalogue

- Two asses on a bare patch of ground, with the first line of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' below. The play begins with three witches in a storm deciding when to meet next ('When the hurlyburly's done, / When the battle's lost and won'). - Abstract:
- "In the foreground are Wellington and Peel as grave-diggers; Eldon, a stout elderly Hamlet wearing a cloak, stands (left) holding a skull, and saying: "Here's fine revolution and [sic] we had the trick to see it." Wellington stands in a grave, in profile to the left, wielding a pickaxe. His shirt-sleeves are rolled up, he wears a small cap; his military coat, cocked hat, and sword lie beside him. He says to Peel: 'Come take off the Orange Peel [see British Museum Satires No. 15683] quickly, I can't get on without you.' Peel, wearing garments of green slashed with orange, is about to take off an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15701). He answers 'I'll change my self before you can say Jack Robinson.' On the extreme right are the posterior and left leg of George IV (as in British Museum Satires No. 12803) who is scurrying off to the right, beside a tombstone which serves as sign-post and is inscribed 'To Hanover' [see British Museum Satires No. 15704]. In the middle distance (right) is the funeral procession, the coffin carried by four bearers with a pall inscribed 'Constitution 1829'. On it stand a large crown and mitre with papers: 'Magna Charta' and 'Bill of Rights'. It is followed by one mourner in cloak and scarf (J. B.), who covers his face with a despairing gesture, exclaiming 'Oh! dear! Oh! dear, what will become of Mrs Bull, & all my little Bulls?-- We shall have nothing but the Popes Bulls. Oh my--' Behind are (left) St. Paul's and (right) York Minster. The pediment of the former is inscribed 'St Pauls now St Patricks' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11898]. On the steps, about to enter, is the Pope, rollicking indecently between a monk (left) and O'Connell (right) in wig and gown. The Pope: 'Och! my darling you have done the job. fal lal la!!' O'Connell: 'Huzza! Huzza! Ould Ireland for ever! Huzza!!!' Behind them (left) capers a ragged Irishman, playing bagpipes and shouting 'St Patrick day in the morning!! Och! my Darlings!' An Irish crowd is indicated in the background. Farther from the spectator is York Minster, blazing furiously, flames and smoke covering the sky; an incendiary with a firebrand (Martin, see British Museum Satires No. 15658) rushes from the building, striding across a paper inscribed 'Blanco [scored through] Black is White'."--British Museum online catalogue

Formerly part of an album (now lost), each on the same size sheet but different colors and attributed to different artists. Annotations in red ink are by the same hand. In this image, a full-length image of Edmund Kean as Othello constructed from parts of a print or prints while his costume and hat and their trimming are cut from satin cloth with additional decorated paper trimming and small metal buttons. - Abstract:
- "George IV sits in an arm-chair, his gouty right leg in a bulky swathing rests on a cushion; the left leg is tightly bound between calf and ankle with a narrow bandage. He wears a loose fur-collared coat or gown over breeches and waistcoat. He leans back reflectively, an open book, Diversions of Purley [by Home Tooke, cf. British Museum Satires No. 9020], in his right hand. Phases of his past life are illustrated in a series of W.L. portraits on the wall behind him. [1] As a handsome young man he stands holding a long-bow, as if at an archery contest. [2] He stands, slightly obese, in his Light Horse uniform, see British Museum Satires No. 8800 (1796). [3] He stands in back view as in BM Satires 12803, facing a wall on which is a portrait of the Hottentot Venus [Saartjie Baartman], see British Museum Satires No. 11577, &c. [4] He stands in hussar uniform, with high curled wig and whiskers. [5] He stands directed to the right in Field Marshal's uniform (as 'especially in 1814). [6] He stands on the deck of a ship in yachting costume wearing loose jacket and trousers, his hands in his coat-pocket. The profile and paunch of Sir William Curtis are behind and on the extreme left. [7] The picture is partly concealed by a curtain, but the King sits near a chamber-pot. [8] He stands in coronation robes holding orb and sceptre (see British Museum Satires No. 14199). [9] He is in Highland costume (see British Museum Satires No. 14386). At the King's left hand is a small cheval-glass topped by a crown. His appearance has changed, he has no whiskers, and has a wig of lightly curled natural hair, parted in the middle, so that in place of the pear- or pineapple-shaped head resulting from a crest of curls and whiskers, as from c. 1811 [In caricature. An engraved H.L. portrait by Schiavonetti after T. Phillips, pub. Cadell & Davis, 11 Oct. 1809, has whiskers and crest of curls], his face seems rounder, and, in many prints, younger. His dress is less formal, and his appearance (confirmed by portraits from 1820) suggests a determination to depart completely from the appearance and costume of caricature."--British Museum online catalogue

- "Heading to a printed broadside, a parody of Hamlet's soliloquy spoken by George IV, beginning 'To be or not to be? and ending 'I'd rather drink and revel here in secret, | Than fly | Where I might meet her face to face'. The King, much burlesqued, stands with legs astride on the boards of a theatre, framed by curtains patterned with grapes, bottles, glasses, crowns, and antlers. On the back-cloth are crude Chinese figures. He has a huge head, with heavy drink-blotched face crowned by the towering curls of his wig, and holds a full goblet and a bottle of Curaco. With an expression of calculating melancholy he meditates suicide, on account of 'The scorns and satire of an injur'd Nation', but fears to meet his wife's ghost."--British Museum online catalogue

- Abstract:
- "Scene in the House of Lords at the Queen's 'trial', showing the throne against the end wall, with the two (temporary) galleries. The Queen exclaims in terror, both arms raised, at the sight of the first witness against her, Majocchi, and of the ghost of Princess Charlotte, who stands, draped in white, beside him, holding her infant, with an arm extended towards the Queen. The latter shrieks: "Theodore!! my Daughter too! ah! what have I done!!! Oh speak." The ghost, garbling Hamlet's words (III. iv, ll. 40-5; 92-4): "Such an Act good Mother, as blurs the / "Grace and Blush of Modesty, calls Virtue Hippocrite / "makes marriage vows as false as Dicers Oaths--Oh / "such a deed! to live in the rank sweat of an / ensemen'd bed stived [sic] in Corruption." Majocchi says: "Non mi Ricardo" [sic]. Beside the Queen, and on the extreme right, are Brougham and Denman, her counsel; they hold documents inscribed 'Defence of the Queen' and 'Queens Defence'. Both register astonished horror: Brougham exclaims (misquoting 'Hamlet', I. ii): "All is not well--I doubt / "some foul play!--for foul / "deeds, will rise--." Denman: "'Tis very strange!" ['Hamlet', I. ii]. The prosecuting counsel (left) are equally disturbed: Gifford, grasping the 'Bill of Pains [and P]enalties', exclaims, misquoting Horatio ['Hamlet', I. i]: "Behold it starteth like / "a guilty thing upon a shamefull "Summons." Copley: "Angels and Ministers / "of Grace defend us" ['Hamlet', I. iv]. A seated judge turns to them, pointing to the Queen, saying: "Look to the Queen!!" ['Hamlet', v. ii]. There is a background of peers, freely indicated, all startled, while spectators watch from the galleries. In the centre foreground a large green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735) stands on the floor, from which clouds of smoke emerge; it has a strap (unbuckled) in the form of a huge Garter, inscribed 'Ho[ni]... Pense'. On the bag is a garbled version of Macbeth's words (I. ii): "Will all great Neptune's Ocean wash this Blood clean from this Bag? No! rather shall this Bag the multitudinous Realm incarnadine making the Green one Red.""--British Museum online catalogue

- Abstract:
- "George IV (right), as Henry VIII (see British Museum Satires No. 13664, &c.), wearing ermine robes and ruff, sits on a dais under a canopy, his eyes turned sideways to the right. In his right hand is a goblet; on a table before him is a decanter of 'Curacoa'. Against this, at a lower level, is a second table on which is the mace; on each side sits a cardinal, gaping in astonishment at Queen Caroline, as Katharine of Aragon; she stands facing the King at the end of the table (left), wearing quasi-Tudor robes. She declaims Queen Catherine's speech, abridged: "Sir, I desire you do me right and justice, And to bestow your pity on me: for I am a most poor woman, and a stranger, Born out of your dominions; -- If, in the course And process of this time, you can report, And perove [sic] it too, against mine honour aught, My bond to wedlock, or my Love and duty Against your sacred person, in Gods name, Turn me away ;-- and so give me up To the sharpest kind of justice." Under Castlereagh's foot lies 'Mag[na] Charta'; his vis-à-vis cardinal is Sidmouth. Next Castlereagh (right) sits a lawyer, writing (? Leach). Beside him is a large bag with its neck encircled by hissing serpents; it is placarded: 'A Green Bag! filled with Spite Envy Malice. Hatred Lies &c &c &c' [see British Museum Satires No. 13735, &c.]. On each side of the King stands a bishop holding a crosier, one the Archbishop of Canterbury, the other probably Pelham of Exeter, see British Museum Satires No. 13946. - "The three witches of Macbeth, hooded and cloaked, each holding a broom, are Liverpool (left), Sidmouth and Castlereagh (right). They surround a huge cauldron inscribed 'Cast--gh & C° Brass Manufacturers Fecit.', each adding something to the flames which tower up from it, surrounded by heavy smoke. A winged Devil at the apex of the design empties into the cauldron the contents of an 'Infernal Green Bag'; from it fall a dagger, a leech, tiny figures, manacles, a razor, an antlered animal's head, many legal papers docketed 'Lies'. Others are contributed by the witches; papers inscribed: 'Divorce', 'Reports', 'Leach', and 'Cooke'. There are also flames under the pot, which, are tended by two naked demons, one with the head of Canning who uses bellows inscribed 'Mother Hunn' [see British Museum Satires No. 13617]; the other with the head of Wellington, who uses a red-hot 'Waterloo Poker'. The Canning-demon sits on the back of a naked female demon (? his mother) who is blowing the flames. On the extreme left and right, each attended by a 'Blue Devil' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14598), stand George IV and the Duke of York. The King, his arms raised, exclaims: "Tell me ye d--n'd infernal Hags of Night, shall Fr--k reign?" [i.e. shall he get a divorce, remarry, and block his brother's succession, see No. 13789]. He stretches across the crown and sceptre which are on the ground. His Blue Devil, touching the George which is suspended from his neck, and his gartered leg ('Honi So[it]'), says: "All hail Macbeth! thou'rt now the cause of Laughter." The Duke of York, in uniform and holding a naked sword inscribed 'the Army', says: "I'll do!--I'll do!--I'll do!--" His attendant Blue Devil: "All hail Macduff!! that shall be K--g hereafter--." The witches chant their parodies. Liverpool: "In the Cauldron first we'll mingle, What shall make great Macbeth single; Oath of an Italian Slave-- Earth of Snuffy [Queen Charlotte] from the grave-- Blood of Radicals--and last In let the Divorce be cast, Hubble, bubble,Toil and trouble, Fire blase and Cauldron bubble!!--" Castlereagh: "Put in C--ke of Lincolns Inn, All that's evil, all that's sin, L--ch's honor--and Britain's shame, Put them in, and fan the flame, Now the broth is good and strong, Macbeth shall again be young." Sidmouth: "Cats, that draw the Soldiers blood, Chains, that bind the brave and good, Tongue of slander, Eye of hate, Mix--and now our charm's complete." - Abstract:
- A set of playing cards, or transformation cards, drawn by an unidentified artist, showing caricatured figures; each vignette incorporates the formation of hearts or diamonds into the scene. Some of the cards are numbered or annotated on the backs while others show drafts of other sketches. The set contains only the red suits, cards numbered from one to ten in each, although some numbers are missing and there are multiples of some numbers. Illustrations are also duplicated while others appear not to have been finished. There are no cards with clubs and spades. A number of the cards center on Shakespearean themes, social history, and street scenes (such as courtroom drama, musicians performing, a man in the stocks and, in a few, card playing itself). Some of the scenes depicted on these cards show more ribald, drawing from Macbeth’s Weird Sisters, Twelfth Night, King John, and The Merry Wives of Windsor; several are annotated on the reverse with lines from the plays. Falstaff is featured on several cards. Many of the cards reflect the mores of the period and the contrast between ruling passions and rules of conduct. In one, two men cast judgment upon a pregnant woman; it is annotated on the reverse with a dialogue between a Constable and a Judge. In "Village School" a schoolteacher manages to simultaneously hold a book and pinch a child's ear (nine of hearts). Other subjects include a game of chess (five of diamonds); drinking and smoking in a pub (seven of diamonds); and "Bunbury’s Country Club" (six of diamonds) in which the artist has kept elements from the print (published circa 1788). On the ten of diamonds the artist depicts a game of whist (annotated on the reverse "Can you one?").

13946. Behind the Queen and on the extreme left stands Wood in his alderman's gown. Beefeaters stand against the wall."--British Museum online catalogue

- Abstract:
- Kean as Richard III, directed to the left, stands on a large volume with the word 'Shakespear' written on the top edge. Resting on his head and humped shoulders is a model of Drury Lane Theatre, a massive block, inscribed 'Whitbreads Intire.' On the roof is poised an ugly figure of Fame, blowing through a trumpet 'Puff Puff Puff', and holding behind her a second trumpet, from which issue the words 'Puff Puff P'. At the entrance to the theatre straddles a tiny Whitbread, his legs and arms projecting from a cask which forms his body; he says: "Now by St Paul the work goes bravely on" (altering Richard's words from 'this news is bad indeed'). Kean stoops, leaning on a cross-hilted sword, inscribed 'A Keen supporter'; he has misshapen bandy legs. He says: "Well, as you guess." He wears an ermine-trimmed cap encircled by a crown, slashed doublet and trunk hose, a sleeveless coat bordered with ermine and embroidered with a (Yorkist) rose, with flapped and spurred boots. (The figure, with the position of the arms altered, is a travesty of J.J. Hall's portrait of Kean interrogating Stanley on the approach of Richmond. The costume is correct.) The stage is indicated by curtains flanking the design. In the background are clouds of smoke.--Adapted from British Museum
