"Fox and Sheridan (left) sit together at the head of a rectangular table on which is a punch-bowl, &c, looking with dismay at whigs (right), who advance to hurl their wigs at a large pile of wigs on the left (inscribed 'The Heads having Scratched out of the Club'), or retire, having already done so. Fox and Sheridan wear enormous wigs, the former says, "Brother: Brother: we are all in the wrong" ... Before Fox is a list with names scored through. Sheridan grasps a bottle of 'Sherry'. A couple advance together, in the act of hurling their large wigs at the pile; one says, "I will Scratch out my Name in hopes of getting in for the City" (probably Nathaniel Newnham, returned for the City 1784, but defeated in 1790, cf. British Museum satires no. 7162). The other is perhaps Windham. The only one of the retiring wigless Whigs who is characterized is Burke. All say: "We have erased our Names for ever from the Club, when the Artful & Ambitious designs of a Faction are carried on under a Mask of Prudential Reform & when the leading Members are Notoriously known to Carry on a secret Correspondence with the Avowed Enemies of the Constitution they Affect to Support & Defend it is high time for all prudent & real friends to that Constitution to leave them to their Just Punishment, the Contemp of all true Friends to their King and Constitution."--British Museum online catalogue

"Naval mutineers, seated and standing at a long table, glare ferociously at Admiral Buckner, who stands (left) calmly, hat in hand, in profile to the right at the foot of the table. The man at the head of the table, seated in a chair which is higher than the others, holds a blunderbuss and wears a hat. He must be Richard Parker, but does not resemble him. At his elbow and on the extreme right stands Thelwall filling a glass from a 'Grog' can; he says "Tell him we intend to be Masters, I'll read him a Lecture"; from his pocket hangs a paper: 'Thellwals Lecture' (see British Museum Satires No. 8685). One man only is seated on the president's left and on the near side of the table. He places a fist on a long paper headed 'Resolutions'. Under the table in the foreground, lifting up the tablecloth, five secret instigators are (left to right): Lauderdale, holding a paper: 'Letter from Sheerness to Ld L------le'; Horne Tooke, Stanhope, Grey, Fox, the most prominent, saying, "Aye, Aye, we are at the bottom of it", and Sheridan. All have satisfied smiles. Four ruffians are seated at the farther side of the table, others stand behind them; one aims a pistol over the admiral's head, one man smokes, another chews tobacco, taking a quid from his box. Weapons lie on the table. On the wall behind them are a print of Britannia head downwards, and two torn ballads: 'True Blue an old Song' and 'Hearts of Oak are our Ships Jolly Tars are our men We alway are Ready', the last word scored through. "Fox reclines in an armchair of Gothic shape, his vast swathed legs resting on a cushion, his head against a pillow. He wears a dressing-gown and night-cap. His friends and colleagues stand round him. On his right. is Mrs. Fitzherbert, a meretricious 'Abbess' (cf. BMSat 5181, &c), holding a rosary and placing her hand under his chin; her face and breasts are covered by a large veil of transparent black. On his left. stands a bishop in lawn sleeves and mitre, a rosary hanging from his waist; he puts one hand on Fox's arm, and raises the other in admonition, saying, "O Tempora, O Mores! - Charley! dear Charley! - remember your poor Soul! - & if you're spared this time give us Emancipation - or!!!" His head is concealed, but he is identified by Lord Holland as O'Beirne, Bishop of Meath, educated as a Catholic, and a Whig pamphleteer. Mrs. Fitzherbert says: "Do confess your Sins Charley! do take Advice from an Old Abbess [cf. BMSat 10404] & receive Absolution! - here is Bishop O'Bother, 'twill be quite snug among Friends you know!" Fox says: "I abhor all Communion which debars us the comfort of the Cup! - will no one give me a Cordial?" Facing Fox, and in back view, stands the Prince, holding a handkerchief to his face; he says: "Alas! poor Charley! - do give him a Brimmer of Sack, 'twill do him more good Abbess, than all the Bishop's nostrums!" In his left hand he holds his cocked hat; in a coat-tail pocket is a pamphlet: 'Letter from N. Jeffreys'. Sheridan on the extreme right., furtive and bloated, puts his hand on the bishop's shoulder, saying, "Emancipation! - fudge! - why Dr OBother I thought you knew better!" In his pocket is a paper: 'Scheme for a new Administra[tion]'. Behind him stands Howick, in the extremity of grief, throwing back his head, and holding his handkerchief to his face. Three men stand, on the Prince's l., looking towards Fox, all weeping with raised handkerchiefs. Their heads rise one above and behind the other from the short Petty who wears a laced coat and bag-wig and has a large roll under his arm: 'New Taxes for 1806'. He says "Ah poor me! - If my Dancing-Days are over!" Windham says: "O Lord! what side can I tack round to Now!" The tall Moira says: "I must get back to Ballynahinch! Och! Och." [The allusion is to Moira's Irish estate and to Canning's verses, 'Ballynahinch' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', 9 July 1798, cf. BMSat 9235.] The three '(Ministerial) Grenvilles stand in the doorway (l.) apart from the mourners. Lord Grenville turns to Sidmouth, who is just within the room, putting a hand on his arm, and saying, "Well Doctor, have you done his business? - shall we have the Coast clear, soon?" Sidmouth answers, with sly satisfaction, "We'll see!" He holds a bottle labelled 'Composing Draft' [cf. BMSat 9849]. The spectacled Marquis of Buckingham looks round to say "O! Such a Day as This! so renown'd so Victorious"; his son, Lord Temple, continues: "such a day as This! was never seen!" In the foreground (l.) the fat Mrs. Fox faints in a small ornate chair; under her chair is a square spirits-bottle of 'True Maidstone', with a broken glass beside it. Lord Derby, wearing top-boots, bends over her, holding a bottle to her nose. He says: "My dear old Flame Bet, dont despair! - if Charley is pop'd off - a'nt I left to Comfort you - ?" On a stool at Fox's r. hand is a urinal decorated with Britannia, standing on a scroll: 'Negotiations for Peace between Great Britain & France'. "Plate to the 'Scourge', iv, before p. 349. An illustration to 'Elections in the Isle of Borneo', pp. 349-55, relating a dream in which the Prince chooses his Ministers and Household officers according to their proficiency in adultery. A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 11899. The Regent is enthroned under a canopy in the centre of a long platform backed by the pillars of Carlton House. Below is the cobbled street, with passers-by and spectators whose heads are just below the platform, so that the figures are arranged in two tiers. The Regent's throne is on a triple dais; he puts one arm round the waist of Lady Hertford who sits on his knee, holding at arms' length a brimming goblet. She puts her right arm round his neck, and also supports herself by placing a finger on the branching antlers of her husband, who stands in his chamberlain's robes, and holding his wand of office, beside the dais, at which he points with a complacent grin. He says: "My gracious Master is personelly acquainted with my merits, they live in his bosom, & he will reward me, according to my Deserts." Lady Hertford wears a spiky crown, and her vast spherical breasts are divided by a jewel in the form of the Prince's feathers with his motto 'Ich Dien.' The drapery over the throne is centred by the crowned skull of a stag, with wide antlers; in its nostrils is a ring from which a birch-rod hangs above the Prince's head. A grinning demon, standing on the antlers, straddles across the crown, holding up the drapery. On the left of the throne the Duke of York, in uniform with cavalry boots, his hand on his sword, stands swaggeringly. A woman clutches his arm and whispers in his ear; beside them is a basket containing three infants and inscribed 'Mother Careys Chickin' [see British Museum Satires No. 11050]. He says: "I was turned out of the Office I now solicit because I was too fond of a married Woman [Mrs. Clarke, see British Museum Satires No. 11216, &c.] & could not live without commiting Adultery I claim therefore to be once more elevated to the Office of Commander in Cheif." Behind Lord Hertford (and a pendant to Mrs. Carey) stands an elderly posturing peer, wearing a star, his hands deprecatingly extended. He says: "As for business I never had a Headfor't but I have laid the Country under a Massy load of Obligations in other respects Adultery is my Motto so give me ******ship of the H-." Next (right) is a group of three: the Duke of Cumberland in outlandish Death's Head Hussar uniform holding a sabre with a notched blade and seemingly dripping blood, though not so coloured. He stands between two young women; one, holding his arm, brandishes a razor over her head, the other holds a paper called 'Nugent'. The Duke says: "Considering my Exploits you cannot do less than make me a Field Marshal." On the extreme right is the Duke of Clarence in admiral's uniform with trousers, pointing to a broken chamber-pot ('Jordan') decorated with a crown and containing seven children, two in uniform. Mrs. Jordan takes him affectionately by the arm. He points downwards, saying, "I have lived in Adultery with an actress 25 years & have a pretty Number of illegetimate Children. I hope you will make me an Admiral of the Fleets." On the extreme left McMahon, dwarfish and ugly, stoops over the edge of the platform, pouring coins from a bag marked 'P P' [reversed letters], for Privy Purse (or Pimp), into the apron of a hideous bawd who grins up at him. He says: "Let her be forty at least, plump & Sprightly." Next stands Lord Yarmouth, wearing a star, his hands in his pockets, scowling at a young woman who puts her hands on his shoulders; he says: "Confound my Wishers if Venus alias Fanny Anny [Fagniani] may not go to Juno----I'm Vice all over. Let me con tinue so." Next is a tall man wearing a long driving-coat with a star and a small rakish top-hat (? Lord Melbourne); one leg terminates in a cloven hoof. He stands between two disreputable women of the lowest St. Giles type, ragged and hideous, an arm across the shoulders of each; both offer him drink, one takes him by the chin. A third and younger woman sits on the ground at his feet, drinking from a bottle. He says: "As for me my Name is sufficient, I am known as the Paragon of Debauchery and I only claim to be the-s [Regent's] Confidential Friend." On the ground (left to right) are the bawd receiving money from McMahon, a ragged dustman with the curved shin-bones then known as 'cheese-cutters', a result of rickets; George Hanger, with his bludgeon under his arm (cf. British Museum Satires No. 8889, &c.), saying, "Hang her She's quite Drunk"; Augustus Barry, grotesquely thin and very rakish, with long coat, standing with widely splayed-out feet. These three stare up at the throne, Barry looking through an eye-glass. A ragged, sub-human creature picks Barry's pocket, taking a paper: 'A Sermon to be Preached at Cripple gate by Revd Honble A Newgate'. A blind beggar (? a sailor) walks with a stick, and a dog on a string, holding out his tattered hat. A Quaker-like figure stares up at the platform where the legs of the seated prostitute hang over its edge, as does a beggar boy with badly twisted legs. Next, a fashionably dressed man and woman shake hands, bending to stare into each other's face. He takes her left hand. His dress resembles that of the dandy of a few years later: shock of hair, exaggerated neck-cloth, hussar-pattern trousers, and long tail-coat. The centre figure in this lower row is John Bull looking up angrily over his shoulder at the prostitute, and pushing away to the right three young girls; he says to them: "Get away get away, if you go near the Platform you'll be ruined." His bull-dog looks pugnaciously up at the platform. A tall emaciated cavalry soldier speaks to a woman in a poke-bonnet, while a little ragged boy clasps the long horse-tail which hangs from his helmet. On the extreme right is Sheridan in (ragged) Harlequin's dress (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9916), moribund or drunk, supported between two top-booted bailiffs; one holds a writ and says "Poor fellow his Magic wand is broken." "The Regent, as Macheath, wearing military uniform and heavily shackled, stands between Mrs. Fitzherbert, who kneels at his feet (left) removing his leg-irons, and Lady Hertford (right), who stands beside him taking the fetters from his wrists (inscribed 'Restri[ctions]'), He sings "How happy could I be with either." Mrs. Fitzherbert, a long rosary dangling from her waist, says: "The Benediction of His Holiness light on the Defender of Our Faith." Lady Hertford, sultana-like in a jewelled turban, says: "You heard of the Row & the Rowly Powly Song before Our house the Other Night?!!" Behind and on the right Eldon stands full-face between Perceval and McMahon, who face each other in profile. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, and holding a brief-bag, says: "The Greys won't move without their own Coachman tho the Brewer [Whitbread] has offerd his black to do the dirty Work." Eldon, in a huge wig, holds the Purse of the Great Seal; he says: "We must hire Jobs for the Night Work but we are Pro' Rogued." McMahon, in military uniform, has a number of ribbons and stars hanging over his arm; he says: "These Garters & Ribbonds are all returned." On the wall are two pictures: George Hanger, bestriding his pony (as in No. 8889) with a burly bailiff seated behind him, rides in the direction of a sign-post, with a noose hanging from it, pointing 'To the Kings Bench'. This is 'George & his Hanger On, takeing a ride together to a Lodging in Surry'. The other is Sheridan as Bacchus, but dressed as Harlequin (cf. A satire on a 6 May 1791 scene between Fox and Burke in the House of Commons which resulted in their permanent estangement. Fox stands weeping as a boy kneels at his feet filling a bucket, the tears are so copious. Burke, turns back to look at him, clenching in his one hand "French Constitution and in the other "treason conspiracy, poor old England" as he trodes on a piece of paper "Canada Bill." Other Members of the House cluster on either side of the Speaker's chair shouting support for one or the other

"Mrs. Billington, enormously fat, sits in an arm-chair, her arms flung over its arms, opening her mouth for a spoonful of guineas, administered by W. T. Lewis (right), who bends over her. On her other side stands Sheridan, round-shouldered, stooping, and agitated. He holds out a money-bag, saying, "O Dear O Dear - if the dear Creature has lost her Notes - what will become of us - my dear friend spare no Cost to make up the deficiency, give her another spoonfull, I have plenty more in the bag - all the true Pizarro-coinage." Lewis, smiling, answers: "Dont be alarmed she takes the Boluses very kindly - and I have every reason to hope a speedy recovery." Mrs. Billington is dressed as Clara, in quasi-Spanish costume, almost as in British Museum Satires No. 9914; a checked scarf lies across her lap. On the right are two amoretti; one stands looking up at the other, who flies above his head holding out a scroll; both hold handkerchiefs to their eyes; the one below has butterfly wings and a wreath of roses, the other has feathered wings. "Two adjacent designs: on the left Sheridan drink-sodden and blear-eyed, stoops obsequiously, right hand on heart, hat held low, directed to the right. He says, slyly, "Gentlemen, it is with the most unfeigned submission I present myself to Your Notice, most Humbly requesting your kind suffrages to return me (although unworthy) one of Your representatives for the great City of Westminster, and when I consider whom I succeed, I cannot but sincerly [sic] deplore his loss, but much more so my inadequacy to fill his place, and can only most solemnly promise to exert the utmost of my poor abilities to keep my place." "An altered copy of British Museum Satires No. 10389. The two principal figures are substantially the same, but Mrs. Fitzherbert's expression is less subtle; she looks down at her charge with an exulting smile. The feathers in her hair are set in a fillet inscribed 'Ich Dien', her breasts are almost bare, her drapery is more swirling. Her pouch is inscribed 'Amusements for Young Minds', its contents differ, and her book is a 'Missal'. Above them (left) ls inscribed: 'Angels ever bright and fair" Take, Oh Take me to thy Care,"'. The altar is larger and closer to the ascending figures. In place of the Virgin, the Prince of Wales (half length) stands behind it, looking down at the 'Guardian-Angel'. On the altar, which is inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctorum' is an irradiated chalice. The attendant cherubs are (left) Derby, (?) Grey, Grenville; and (right) Norfolk, Burdett, and Windham. Two cherubs have descended from the circle (right) and look fixedly at close range towards the child; they are Fox and Sheridan. The rays are inscribed: 'Bulls', 'Dispensations', 'Indulgences', 'Luxuries', 'Consecrations', 'Cannonizations', 'Remissions', 'Pardons', 'Beatifications', 'Permissions'. "Sheridan, a candle in each hand, shambles before the royal party, ushering them through the theatre and looking over his shoulder with an expression of exasperated anxiety. The King, in back view, turns to the Queen, saying, "I like the Author very much - took him for a Jacobin - no such thing - quite a different man - brim full of loyalty - I'll certainly come again!!" Behind the pair Salisbury, the Lord Chamberlain, walks stiffly, holding his staff and wearing his gold key. He is followed by one of the Princesses (Augusta Sophia), walking with the Prince of Orange, whose portly contour and sulky profile with closed eye appear on the extreme left. Through the door (probably that from the box lobby) Fox is seen holding a constable's staff and saying to the crowd, anxious to see the arrival: "Stand away there, don't stop up the passage you pack of Jacobin Rascals"."--British Museum online catalogue

"The Prince of Wales and his adherents are travestied as negroes; the Prince stands in a doorway inscribed 'Brookes Rectifier of Spirits', which is represented as a debtor's prison: the heads of George Hanger and Burke are seen through a barred window on the left outside which hangs a basket inscribed 'Pray Remember us Poor Blacks'. Both are naked, except for Hanger's accustomed cocked hat (cf. BMSat 6924), and Burke's biretta (cf. BMSat 6026). The Prince wears a girdle of leaves, a helmet feathered like the head-dress of a Red Indian, but decorated with the triple ostrich plume, and his ribbon and star. He holds out his hands in consternation at the approach of Fox and North (as a woman), their arms interlaced, their faces contorted with grief (cf. BMSat 6193, &c). Fox's hat is inscribed 'Carlo Crusoe'; on his breast is a placard: 'We were unfortunately cast away in the British Channel on board the Portland East Indiaman' (an allusion to the defeat of the Coalition on Fox's India Bill, and probably an imitation of the placards of begging seamen). Their scanty garments are ragged; from North's Garter ribbon hangs a placard: 'Ruined by the American War'. Behind them is another couple with arms interlaced: Lord George Gordon (not a negro) with a black man who carries a primitive stringed instrument, his cap inscribed 'Man Friday'. He is perhaps intended for Sheridan. Gordon flourishes a paper inscribed 'Defence of the Blacks by Lo[rd] G------G------' and says "By all the glories of mischief they have no right to send us to Africa". At the end of the procession Thurlow with a raised stick chases a negro wearing a cap inscribed 'Purveyor', who resembles Weltje, except that he is short and fat, and says, with clasped hands, "O! "The Prince of Wales reclines on a sofa, half-sitting, half-lying, and leaning against Mrs. Fitzherbert. He is intent on a circular box or 'bandelure' at the end of a string which he holds round the second finger of his raised right hand, playing with the toy revived in the twentieth century as Yo-yo. Sheridan leans over the back of the sofa, embracing Mrs. Fitzherbert and thrusting his hand inside her decolletage. She puts her left hand on Sheridan's cheek, her right arm is round the Prince. The expressions of all three excellently indicate their preoccupations. On the left a fire blazes in the grate; above it is a decorative panel of a horse-race. On the shelf above is a bust of 'Claudius Rom: Imp:', a dice-box and dice, and the figure of an infant Bacchus, astride a cask and holding up a glass. On the wall behind Sheridan's head is a picture of 'Joseph & Potiphers Wife'. Behind him and on the extreme right is an open door showing a staircase. The Prince is stouter than in earlier prints; he wears his star, but his wrinkled stockings and slippers, like his pose, suggest indolence and domesticity. The fat Empress sits with her hands on her hips; she wears a crown, in her right hand is a sceptre, in her left a paper inscribed 'New Russian Conquests'. "A carriage (right) drives at a gallop towards the gateway of St. James's Palace; Lord Lansdowne, in peer's robes, puts his head out of the window to call to the coachman, who is lashing the pair of horses: "Drive you dog! drive! - now, or never! - aha the Coast is clearing!------drive! drive! you dog!" He has a sly smile. The carriage is decorated with coronets, and on the door is the beehive crest of Lord Lansdowne and the motto 'Ut Ap[es] Geometriam'. The coachman and three footmen who stand behind have enormous feather-trimmed cocked hats in the French fashion, with bag-wigs. Running behind the carriage with outstretched arms are: Fox, saying, "Stop! stop! - & take me in, - Stop!"; Sheridan saying, "And me too! stop", and (very small) M. A. Taylor, saying, "And me". In the background a similar carriage is driving yet more rapidly out of the Palace gateway; the tiny figures are recognizable: Dundas, the coachman, has dropped the reins, the horses are running away; Pitt, terror-stricken, puts his arms through the windows. Both look up at a dove with an olive-branch which flies over their heads towards the gateway. "A burlesqued illustration of the quotation from 'Paradise Lost' etched below the design ... In the upper left corner of the design, and in the background, an aged St. Peter holds open a small arched door, putting one of his three massive keys into the lock. The irradiated doorway is 'Popish Supremacy'; through it is seen a table, also irradiated, spread with loaves, fishes (cf. BMSat 10697), and wine. A golden staircase receding in perspective ascends in a curve to the door from the summit of the globe, on which 'Ireland' (the more conspicuous) and 'England' are marked. A procession of petitioners winds up the globe from the lower margin of the design; its leaders have begun to ascend the stairs but have been struck by three mighty blasts of wind. These issue from the mouths of Pitt, Hawkesbury (just below), and Sidmouth (considerably lower) Their profile heads emerge from dark clouds on the extreme left. The blasts have overthrown the leading petitioners: Grenville, in bishop's robes, staggers back with outstretched arms, his crozier and mitre fall, and the Catholic Petition blows from his hands, tattered by the wind, in a stream of 'popish' objects which slants upwards across the design. Immediately behind him, full face, the spectacled Buckingham staggers backward. He is dressed as a monk. In front of the two brothers Moira has fallen on his back on the third stair, kicking wildly, his upright l. leg expressing his characteristic stiff rigidity. He wears a surplice over regimentals and spurred boots, and his sword has broken. He has dropped the halter of the Irish bull on which sits Fox, dressed as a cardinal, the central figure of the design. The bull, snorting flames, rears violently, throwing Fox back into a horizontal position. Round its neck is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Order of St Patrick', from which hangs a medal with a profile of 'Buonaparte'; on its head is a bunch of shamrock. Fox is a Papal Legate; he is about to fall, and drops his triple cross to which is attached a tattered tricolour banner, inscribed 'Catholic Emancipa[tion']. His cardinal's hat flies off; from his left hand blows a document with many seals: 'Hierarchical Powers of ye Legate-Cardinal Volpone'. Mrs. Fitzherbert, a Mother Abbess, has fallen headlong from the stairs on to the globe. Her r. hand is on Ireland, resting on an open book: ' . . by the Brighton Abbess System of Education for the benefit of Protestant Children'; her left wrist is on England. "The Prince of Wales lies in bed asleep, clasping a pillow with a rapt expression, his closed eyes directed towards a vision of the Princess Caroline who leans towards him floating on clouds, a radiant beauty with outstretched arms. A winged figure with the torch of Hymen (right) holds up her draperies, while a cupid with bow and arrows flying above the Princess's head holds up the heavy curtains of the four-post bed. On the left, also emerging from clouds, the King and Queen, caricatured, crouch over the Prince's bed. The former, a grotesque figure, holds out a large money-bag inscribed '£150000 Pr Annm'. The Queen holds out a book: 'The Art of getting Pretty Children'. Both have expressions of avid delight. On the left and among clouds persons flee in alarm at the approach of the bride: Fox scattering dice from a dice-box, Sheridan as a bearded Jew wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Above them are three women: the most prominent, Mrs. Fitzherbert, with clasped hands; next (?) Lady Jersey, and between and behind them a young woman wearing a cap (cf. BMSat 8611). Above their heads two tiny jockeys gallop off, indicating that the Prince will give up the turf (cf. BMSat 7918, &c). From the foot of the bed (left), which extends diagonally across the design from right to left, rolls a cask of 'Port' on which an infant Bacchus with the head and clumsy figure of Lord Derby is seated astride; he is about to fall, dropping his glass. "Britannia (left) grovels before a monster (right) representing the French Republic. Behind her stand Fox, Sheridan, and Stanhope, as sansculottes, joyfully hailing the apparition. Britannia on her knees, and bending forward, holds out her arms in a gesture of abject submission, pointing to her shield and spear, the crown and sceptre, and 'Magna Charta' which lie on the ground before her. She is on the edge of a cliff. The monster is supported on dark clouds; he is a man seated with arms and legs akimbo, one jack-boot is planted on the sun, a face in its disk looking from the corners of the eyes at Britannia with a dismayed expression; the other is on a crescent enclosing the old moon. His seat is the point of a huge bomb-shaped cap of 'Li-ber-tas'. His head is a black cloud on which grotesquely fierce features are indicated. Above his head rises a guillotine emitting rays of light. His dress is that of a ragged sansculotte with a dagger thrust in his belt. The British sansculottes are also bare-legged and wear belts in which a dagger is thrust; but they have nothing of the fierce arrogance of France. Fox, his stockings ungartered, and Sheridan, shambling forward with propitiatory gestures, remove their bonnets-rouges. Fox holds out two large keys labelled 'Keys of the Bank of England'; Sheridan proffers a document: 'We Promise the Surrender of the Navy of Great Brita[in] - of Corsica [see BMSat 8516] - of the East & West Indias [see BMSat 8599] - & to abolish the Worship of a God' [cf. "John Palmer (left), striding across a miniature circular tower surrounded by a moat, falls back under the attacks of two men on the other side of the moat. He wears pseudo-Elizabethan dress, with a cloak; his feathered hat falls off. On his arm, in place of a shield, is a document inscribed 'Licence . . . Wild-moat'; he drops from his right hand a paper inscribed 'Tower Privilege'. Cornwallis, saying, "I am down again". Miniature cannon are firing from the tower. Facing him, one foot on an upturned tub inscribed 'For the Use of Cov: Gar. Wardrobe', is a man wearing nightcap, dressing-gown, and slippers, with an apron, who is about to hurl a bar inscribed 'Castile Soap', saying, "I am a Gentleman, you Vagabond"; on his left arm, in place of a shield, is a paper inscribed 'An Act for regulating the Stage'. He is probably George Colman. Beside him, his left arm in a sling, a young man (? Colman the younger) discharges at Palmer a blast from a pistol inscribed 'Breach of Articles'. Three spectators stand close together on the right, saying, "Mr Palmer, we must oppose: we told you so at Christmas!" They are Sheridan and probably his partners, Linley and Dr. Ford. In the background (right) is a building inscribed 'Circus', in front of which a man stands on one toe on the back of a galloping horse, while a monkey stands on its head on the back of a pig; the pig's saddle is inscribed 'Jacko'; from its mouth issues 'ABC', representing Astley's, General Jacko, and the Learned Pig (see BMSat 6715, &c); a scroll issuing in a curve from Astley and Jacko is inscribed 'We shall all Play'. "Hastings stands in a two-wheeled cart under a gibbet. Fox places the rope round his neck; Burke also stands in the cart dressed as a parson, in a long gown and bands, holding an open book. Sheridan (right) pushes the cart from behind, looking at North (left) who holds the horse's head. Large scrolls issue from the mouths of all five and are an important part of the design: Hastings says, "Walpole said every Man had his Price but Alass! I never could find out any of your Prices." Burke says "A Poor Atonement this for Millions &c." Fox says "A Poor Atonement do you call it Ned! Egad it would have been adevil of a Job for me, if my F------r had made such an atonement for------Unaccounted Millions." "Hastings stands holding one end of a large pie in his left hand; in his right he raises a knife to cut the pie. On the left are Managers of his impeachment; on the right are Thurlow and the Devil: both drag at Hastings and at the pie, but the latter party appear to be gaining. Small demons or imps emerge from the pie which personifies Impey. Burke clutches Hastings's coat and right arm; a scroll issuing from his mouth extends above his assistants and is inscribed 'For the sake of Injured Millions, I and my worthy Friends and Colleagues demand these Wretches as Victims to Publick Justice'. Fox clutches Burke, another man (? Sheridan) clutches Fox, his arm being linked in that of the man (? Windham) on the extreme left. A fifth man in back view clutches with both hands at the pie; a paper protrudes from his pocket inscribed 'Sr Elijah's Impeachment', showing that he is Sir Gilbert Elliot who was entrusted with the case against Impey. Thurlow drags at Hastings's left arm and clutches two large money-bags; a scroll issues from his mouth, forming a pendant to that of Burke: 'And - for the sake of Consigned Millions, I - with the assistance of my old Friend and Colleague here am resolved to protect these worthy Gentlemen'. He wears his Chancellor's wig and gown; one hairy leg terminates in a cloven hoof. "A pack of hounds is in full cry after an animal with the head of Hastings which runs through the gate of St. James's Palace (right). He wears a turban; a collar round his neck is inscribed 'Hyana', and a large bag inscribed 'Diamonds & Rupees' is tied to his tail. The hounds are being whipped back by Thurlow (left) who rides an ass with the head of the King, shouting "Back! Back!" He wears a hunting-cap and boots with monstrous spurs, with his Chancellor's wig and gown. He is riding over the hounds who have the heads of the leading Managers of Hastings's impeachment. North (not a Manager) lies prostrate and apparently dead under the ass's heels. Burke is being crushed under the animal's off foreleg, while the other kicks Fox. The foremost of the pack is Sheridan, his collar inscribed 'Drury Lane'. Behind him are Fox, a dog whose collar is inscribed 'Francis' (not a Manager, see BMSat 7268), and Michael Angelo Taylor, his collar inscribed 'Law-Chick', see BMSat 6777. The King's head is in profile to the right, his saddle is ornamented with a crown and a jewel is suspended from his neck, probably the famous diamond, see BMSat 6966, &c. Two sentries stand at the gate of the Palace with pens in their caps, probably indicating that they are the two Secretaries of State, [In Wright and Evans they are identified as Sydney and Pitt. "An elderly Indian princess, seated on a stool in profile to the left, her hands deprecatingly extended, receives the obeisance of Burke, Fox, and Sheridan. She says, "dear Gentlemen this is too much now you really distress me exceedingly" ... Burke kneels at her feet, head bent down, supporting himself on his left hand; his right hand is on his breast; he frowns, his spectacles are on his forehead. He is between Sheridan and Fox. Fox stands full-face, holding his hat to his breast; his bow is less low. On the right seven bag-wigs are in positions corresponding to those that they would take if on the heads of persons making low bows to the Begum. Below them are three swords whose hilts are decorated with large ribbon bows or favours, also as if worn by invisible persons doing homage to the Begum. Sheridan wears a similar sword. Both wigs and swords are inscribed 'et cætera.' Under the Begum's seat appear the head and arms of Francis as if emerging from the ground; he fixes Burke and the others with a conspiratorial stare, his finger across his lips, saying, "I am at the Bottom of it." Behind and above the Begum's head is a picture of a row of conical mountains ; a mouse issues from a hole in the nearest mountain. "The cattle-pens (right) of Smithfield Market are filled with cattle with the faces of peers and draped with ermine-trimmed robes. [The ermine is apparent only in the coloured impression] Thurlow, dressed as a farmer, the owner of the cattle, stands on guard with his back to the pens; he wears his Chancellor's wig and uses the mace as a walking-stick. He clutches a full purse in his right hand and looks fiercely at a smaller number of cattle who are being driven from the left towards the pens. One of these, with the head of Lord Derby, stands on his hind legs, saying, "I move an adjournment till after the next Newmarket Meeting". The cattle in the pens (right) have the heads of peers who were believed favourable to Hastings. In the front row are (left to right) Lord Sydney, the Duke of Grafton, and (between two unidentified peers) Lord Bathurst. An ox with the head of Lord Lansdowne, his horns tipped to prevent mischief, stands (right) outside the pen which he tries to enter, his eyes slyly fixed on Thurlow (cf. BMSat 7311). Others cannot be identified. The Opposition peers include the Duke of Portland (who glares fiercely at Sydney), the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Carlisle, and Lord Stormont. They are being driven by a fierce-looking drover (left); a dog wearing a peer's robe, his collar inscribed 'Mountford', barks at them. On the extreme left Hastings, dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding (right to left) a miserable horse fit only for the knacker (the horse of Hanover), carries off a calf with the profile of George III, its forelegs tied together. He whips his horse ferociously. Behind him is a pawnbroker's shop-window, with three balls and the sign 'Money Lent'. In the middle of the cattle-pens (right) is a bell (that of the Market) on a post, a man (? George Rose) wearing a bag-wig pulls the bell-rope, looking round with a cynical smile. Undifferentiated ministerial cattle at the back of the pens push with their horns at a watchman's box which they are overturning. Three men dressed as watchmen, seated on the roof (which they have climbed to escape the cattle), drop staff, lantern, and rattle and are about to fall off; they are Fox, Burke, and Sheridan. The background is formed by buildings; the pawnshop (left) adjoins a large inn behind the cattle, a house at the corner of 'Smithfield' and 'Cow Lane', which diverges on the right. It is the sign of the Crown; in a balcony over the large gateway which leads to the courtyard sit Dundas (left) and Pitt (right), much at their ease, facing each other in profile, regardless of the turmoil below. They are smoking and have foaming tankards marked with a crown; Dundas is in Highland dress, Pitt is dressed as an English farmer or drover. On the balcony is: 'Good Entertainment for Man and Beast'. "Pitt, Hastings, and Thurlow, the State Jugglers, are on a platform outside the gate of St. James's Palace. Above the gate projects the sign of the Crown inn, across which rests a plank forming a see-saw; on this the King (right) as Punch sits facing Queen Charlotte, dressed as Judy or Mother Shipton; she takes a pinch of snuff, the King holds out his hands as if in disapproval. A crowd of suppliants surrounds the platform. Pitt, bending towards them, pulls ribbons from his mouth; three men on the extreme left hold out their arms eagerly: one is a naval officer, a 'Log Book' under his arm shows that he is Sir Alexander Hood, see BMSat 5536, K.B. elect, see BMSat 7318. The second is Wilkes; the third cannot be identified. Hastings kneels between Pitt and Thurlow, his hands crossed humbly on his breast, a copious stream of coins issues from his mouth. Dundas, Lansdowne, Sydney, a bishop, and a fifth suppliant hold out their hats eagerly to catch the coins. Thurlow stands erect, his hands on his hips, flames and smoke issuing from his mouth inscribed "Hell-Fire, my Soul, Dam, Blast, Eyes, Heaven, Curse, Limbs, Blood". A little chimney-sweep [The sweep is said to represent Frederick Montagu, one of the Commissioners in Fox's India Bill. Wright and Evans.] and a ragged fishwife, a basket of fish on her head, stand gazing at him with wonder and admiration. On the extreme right, at the side of the platform, Fox, supported on the shoulders of Burke, slyly holds out his hat behind Thurlow; Sheridan (?) "A stage-coach drives (right to left) through water; the four horses have human heads. A signpost on the extreme right points 'To the Slough of Despond'. The driver is Burke; he lashes the horses furiously. On the box under his legs are the (broken) scales and sword of Justice and a laurel wreath. Fox sits on the roof as the guard, holding a blunderbuss. He and Burke watch with alarm the horses who are advancing into deeper water. The heads of the horses are in profile; Derby is the off leader, Sheridan the near wheeler. The near leader may be Windham. The heads of four passengers (members of the Opposition), with anxious or despairing expressions, are visible through the window. The middle of the three facing the horses resembles Portland, the man on his right Stormont. The man on his left is Francis (as in BMSat 7330). Their 'vis-à-vis' may be Lord Carlisle. On the side of the coach, which is 'Licens'd by Act of Parliament', is a crest: a bull (for John Bull) with the motto 'Pro Bono Publico'. The basket at the back is filled with documents inscribed 'Bill of Rights', 'Magna Charta', 'Impeachment of W. Hastings'. Beneath the design is etched: 'O Liberty! O Virtue! O my Country!' "An election riot. In the foreground Sheridan (left) stands over Sir Sampson Wright who kneels on the ground in abject alarm. Sheridan holds him by the collar and shakes his fist in his face; from his pocket protrudes a paper inscribed 'Drury Lane'. On the right is a party of Guards, one pierces with his bayonet Fox's posterior, drawing blood. Fox, the central figure, prances in pain and alarm, his hat falling off. "An election mob in which Townshend and his supporters, as butchers, are violently attacking the populace with cleavers and marrow-bones. They wear aprons with butchers' steels dangling from the waist. George Hanger (right), his hat decorated with three ostrich feathers and the coronet of the Prince of Wales, raises a cleaver in both hands and threatens two constables with staves who fall backwards, wounded or terrified. He is in violent action, one foot rests on the unconscious body of a sailor whose face is gashed and bleeding. In the sailor's hand is a flag with a ship and the words 'Royal Navy'; on this Townshend, who uses his marrow-bone and cleaver as a musical instrument, not as weapons, is trampling. Behind Hanger, Fox, climbing above the crowd, is violently smashing the sign of 'The King's Head' (a bust portrait of the King) which is over a door inscribed 'Martin'. In the foreground a woman half-lying on the ground tries to protect her screaming infant from a cleaver and bone brandished by Sheridan. On the extreme left Lord Derby attacks a kneeling sailor with a wooden leg. "The Prince of Wales in a drunken frolic enters the King's bedroom, followed by Hanger and Sheridan. The King (right) lies under a tent-shaped canopy with curtains; he turns his head from his son, looking down with an expression of misery; his right arm is outstretched as if to ward off the intruders. By his bedside, between the Prince and the King, sits an elderly bishop, exclaiming in horror; in his hand is a paper inscribed 'A Prayer Restoration of Health Amen'. The Prince has overturned a circular table, a Communion cup lies on the ground. He reels drunkenly with folded arms, saying, '"Damme, come along, I'll see if the Old Fellow's------or not" --'. Hanger and Sheridan are dancing with glee. Hanger, wearing his hat, holds a bottle in both hands; Sheridan waves his hat. "The Prince and Britannia stand on each side of the Coronation Chair as in BMSat 7386. Its Gothic carvings are altered to satyrs' heads. On the back of the Chair is a small money-bag inscribed Virtue. The Prince and Britannia stand as before, but the foot which she places on the step inscribed 'The Voice of the People' is a cloven hoof. The next step, 'Publick Safety', is badly cracked; the other steps are blank. No words come from Britannia's mouth; the Prince says, "I woud do the best to please my People". Liberty and Justice are transformed into Sheridan and Fox. Sheridan, wearing ragged clothes, holds the cap of 'Liberty' on a broom; he puts one hand on the Prince's shoulder while he steals a handkerchief from his coat-pocket. Fox, in place of Justice's sword, holds a bludgeon in the head of which is an eye which drips blood (in the coloured version); he holds up an evenly-balanced pair of scales, formed of two dice-boxes. His eye-bandage is pushed up on his forehead and he says, "I have the Voice of the People in my Eye". 'Commerce' is transformed from a comely young woman into a drunken hag who holds up a glass of gin. The Mayor says, "We have not been taxed this twelvemonth". Pitt, instead of being the colleague of the Furies, attacks them: in his left hand he holds up a large conical extinguisher with which he is about to put out the torch of 'Rebellion'. He says, "I could soon extinguish these Puppet Shew Vapours if properly supported". The Fury holds up two torches, one of 'Rebellion', the other 'Puppet Shew'. He puts his left foot on the prostrate head of 'Envy', who is holding up a fire-brand. The third fury (Falsehood) has disappeared. "Half length portraits of Dr. Willis and Sheridan in close proximity, repeated twice, the doctor being on the extreme left and right, the two Sheridans in the middle. One couple (left) is inscribed 'Sunday', the other (right) 'Saturday'. The doctor in both cases answers a question in a label which projects into the design from an unseen inquirer: 'Doctor, how is your Patient to Day'. On the left he answers with a contented expression: "Better thank God"; his neighbour angrily shouts "Damnation". On the right he has an expression of melancholy anxiety, the head of his cane held to his lip; he answers: "Rather worse - Sir - ". The procession is preceded on the extreme right by Hall the apothecary, one of Fox's chief supporters in Westminster, who holds the abortive 'Regency Bill'. A medical instrument protrudes from his coat-pocket; he is 'Apozem, Clerk, & Apothecary'. ... After him in priest's robes and wearing a Jesuit's biretta walks Burke, 'Ignatius Loyola' (cf. BMSat 6026), holding an 'Ode upon his Majesty Recovery'. ... The coffin is carried on the shoulders of six men with bulls' heads, hoofs, and tails, wearing coronets and shedding tears; three only are depicted, though the hoofs of the three on the left side of the coffin are indicated; it is 'The Body of the deceased supported by six Irish Bulls'. On the left is Sheridan in profile, his face disfigured by drink, puffing angrily; next is Fox facing three-quarter length to the right, with a fierce expression. Behind him Sheridan, with ass's ears and "School for Scandal" written across his head cover, watches the Duke of Portland count out money to Lord Carlisle. "On the right is 'The old Building', an inn of old-fashioned construction with a projecting upper story and attic, representing Great Britain or the Constitution. On the left is the king, apparently asleep, driving off to Hanover in a coach with a crown on its roof. Two men and a barefooted woman who holds up two naked infants kneel beside the coach in attitudes of despairing entreaty. In the upper left corner of the print, above the coach, an eye looks towards the 'Old House' labelled, 'Turn out those Robbers and repair the House'. The robbers in possession are members of the Coalition. The lowest story, stone-built and solid but sinking beneath the weight of the upper floors, is inscribed 'Public Credit', a large padlocked gate being inscribed 'Funds'. Outside it sits Fox, in the form of a fox, on a stone inscribed 'Protector'; he points towards the padlock. A chain attached to his waist is attached to a curving pillar, inscribed 'Coalition', which is the bending support of a balcony. Beside him, seated on a turnstile, is North saying, "Give me my Ease And do as you Please". On the other side of the gateway the crown stands on a block inscribed 'To be Sold'. The first floor is supported by two massive beams or props, one, 'The Lords', being intact (indicating the part taken by the Lords in rejecting the India Bill), the other, 'Prerogative of the Crown', is almost chopped through by one of two lawyers in a first-floor window inscribed 'ye two Lawyers'; he sits with one leg over the sill wielding an axe. Beside him projects from a beam the sign of the house, 'Magna Charta', a torn document with a pendant seal; the signboard is dropping down. He is Lee the Attorney-General, pilloried for his speech on the East India Company's Charter, see British Museum Satires No. 6364, &c. Next him is another lawyer, who shakes his clenched fist towards 'Magna Charta'. He is perhaps James Mansfield (1733-1821) who succeeded Lee as Solicitor-General (Nov. 19) on the death of Wallace. The first-floor balcony, an excrescence on the original structure supported by the pillar Coalition, extends round the corner of the house above Fox and North. It is filled with revellers: a harlequin leans over it, next him is Burke, who blows a long trumpet from which issue the words 'Sheridan Sheridan Sheridan dan Sheridan', pointing towards a group on his left which includes a man (Sheridan?) flourishing a bottle and dressed as a clown or zany (cf. On the rails of the balcony is a placard 'Here's the Whore of Babylon the Devil and the Pope'. The wall behind is inscribed 'The old Building'. The projecting windowless attic or cornice is divided, in front of the house into partitions numbered from 1 to 10. Round the corner (right) the wall is inscribed 'The accursed 10 years American War fomented by opposition and misconducted by a timid Minister'. The roof is composed of stones or large irregular slates, on each of which is the word 'Tax', showing that the security of the house is endangered by the weight of taxes. "The Ministry defend 'The Citadel of Office' behind a high stone wall against different Opposition groups. The chief defence is by the tiny Perceval who fires a cannon from whose muzzle issue three heads intended for Wellesley, Ryder, and Melville. In the centre the wall is breached, and Eldon looks from the gap, weeping; behind him is the Woolsack, inscribed 'Wool'. Lord Grey, on tiptoe, reaches up to seize his gown, while he flourishes a paper: 'Report of Physicians 1804'. Erskine, quite bald and with his (former) Chancellor's gown over his arm, reaches up to tug at the Chancellor's wig. Seated on the wall at the lowest point of the breach is Yorke in back view; in his pocket is a 'List of my Friends Cambridge' [see No. 11535]. He hands down a large seal bearing an anchor to Whitbread who straddles a cask floating in water which adjoins the 'Citadel' on the right. Whitbread takes this emblem of the Admiralty, flourishing a tankard (cf. No. 10414). On the left of the breach Sir Vicary Gibbs, brandishing a rolled document inscribed 'Law of Libel', defends himself vigorously against Romilly, who drags at his gown and has a similar weapon inscribed 'New Statutes'. In Romilly's pocket is a paper: 'New Bankrupt Laws'. Farther to the left the three Grenvilles, Lord Temple, the Marquis of Buckingham, and Lord Grenville, level a battering-ram against the wall. The ram has a ram's head, as in heraldry, but with a human face, and is intended for Ponsonby, leader of the Opposition in the Commons. On one horn is spiked a paper: 'Catholic Emancipation'. Between them and Romilly, little Lord Lansdowne (Petty) sits on the ground squirting a large syringe over his shoulder at the wall. Next the ram Moira, stiff and aloof, holds up a fox with the head of Lord Holland (nephew and political heir of Fox), whose fore-paws, holding a paper of 'Resolutions', have reached the top of the wall but are caught in a trap. On the extreme left. Tierney bestrides a wooden horse whose hind-legs are broken off; it is inscribed 'Finance'. A bundle inscribed 'New Budget for 1811' is strapped to his back; he fires a pistol inscribed 'Bullion Report', but he is about to be thrown, so that the pistol points backwards over his head. Between Tierney and the wall are Burdett and Wardle. The former is flinging mud at the defenders, at Moira, and at Tierney. ..."--British Museum online catalogue

"A satire on Drury Lane Theatre. The Board consists of three men at a table, almost covered by four large dishes, each containing an article of food with a portrait head. On the farther side sits Sheridan, ladling guineas towards his grinning and avid mouth. Facing him is Tom Sheridan, identified by a pamphlet, 'Caractacus', in his coat-pocket, and, opposite him, the President of the Board, .... These two turn towards the foremost of a number of hungry dogs with human heads; the latter beckons to him, while Tom feeds him with a cheque or note of 100£. Another dog, its collar inscribed 'John Bull' [1803], showing that he is Colman, turns away, but looks distrustfully over his shoulder at the pair. There are six others. T. Sheridan draws furtively from the pocket in the tail of his coat a purse, for which a (normal) dog begs, seated on an open book, 'The World' [first played at Drury Lane 31 Mar. 1808], showing that he is James Kenney. Beside the book are scattered papers inscribed 'Rejected Plays &c.', at which two dogs with human heads sniff and paw. One has a collar inscribed 'Carlo' [from 'The Caravan', see No. 10172, &c.], and is probably F. Reynolds. A man, resembling Wroughton in No. 11079, approaches the table, a napkin under his arm, carrying a large tureen inscribed 'Water Grue and containing plays: 'World!' [Kenney], 'Siege of St Quintin' [by T. Hook, first played Drury Lane 10 Nov. 1808], 'Travellers' [by Andrew Cherry, music by Corri, first played Drury Lane, 14 Jan. 1806], 'Venoni' ['or, The Novice of St. Mark's'] (by M. G. Lewis, first played Drury Lane, 1 Dec. 1808). The dishes on the table are 'Toad in a Hole, Turtle, Calfs Head Surprse [sic]', and 'Barbicued Pig'. Under the table (right) is a pile of papers, or books in shadow at which mice or rats are nibbling. "George III stands on a low rectangular platform placed upon a boarded floor and is approached from all sides by applicants for office. He is in back view, but turns his head in profile to the left, to inspect a group through his spy-glass, saying: Well Gentlemen,--I have taken a peep at you all: but I am afraid that you won't do--for some of you are too Heavy & Broad-Bottom'd for Service; & the rest seem to have no Bottom at all.--So Gentlemen, I think I shall he content with my Old Servants. In the front row (left), bowing low, are three Grenvilles, the Broad-Bottoms par excellence (see No. 10530): Grenville, holding a gold-laced coachman's hat and long whip, says: Does your Honor want a steady Broad-Bottom'd Coachman to drive you; in bowing he has split his tight breeches. His nephew Temple is next him, then the spectacled Buckingham who says: We'll do any Thing; his son (Temple) adds and in any Way! [cf. No. 10721]. Close behind is the emaciated Sidmouth, hat in hand and holding out a bottle labelled Cathartic; he says: Pray your Honor remember Doctor Slop! your Old Apothecary, who Physick'd the French! [see No. 9849]. Next him and nearer the spectator stands Whitbread, dressed as a porter, and mopping his head. His porter's knot is on the ground, inscribed: Saml Froth his Knot--Carries any Weight in any Weather. He supports against his knees a huge rectangular pile of Motions to be brought in the House of Commons. These are inscribed: Motion against Royal Family [cf. No. 11234]; Motion against the Ministry; against the War; against y Judges; against the Church; against Magna Charta; Motion against. He says: If his Honor wants an Honest Porter, I'm his Man! Behind him and on the extreme left Lord Henry Petty capers to a dancing-master's kit which he plays with his fingers; he asks: Does his Honor want a Fidler to play a Jig [see No, 10589]. Behind Petty and Whitbread are two men dressed as chairmen with straps across the shoulder: one is Grattan; the other (?) Ponsonby, asks: Does his Honor want a pair of Irish Chairmen to carry his Honor clean through the Mud? Behind these and in the doorway (left) is a group of three: Cobbett, holding up his hat and a sheaf of Cobbett Political Register, says: Does his Honor want a Patriotic Reformer? Burdett asks: Does his Honor want a Partner in Business!--ask him Townsend. Townsend, the Bow Street officer, holding up his constable's staff, faces the group, saying sternly: Out with you & be damn'd; from the back of his head a label floats towards the Grenvilles: Take care of your Pockets--Gentlemen Broad bottoms. "The Regent, scarcely caricatured, rides (right to left) a white horse with the (bloated) head of Sheridan, the flank being branded 'P R'. The horse walks along a cobbled street which is strewn with large stones on each of which is the head of a member of the Opposition. Sheridan says: "Never fear, my dear Master, I will carry you through this ugly road in safety--I'll hick all the vile stones aside that would impede your way, and your old Hack, Sherry, you will find able to support you to the last." On the stone under his hoof is the head of Grenville. Two others have already been kicked aside: (?) Holland, and, in the foreground, the Duke of Norfolk. Others (left to right) are: Buckingham (in spectacles) and Whitbread, Grey, Lord Temple, Moira, and Erskine. Others are not characterized.
