"George III, in back view, seated at a writing-table, tries to fend off members of the new Ministry who beset him with conflicting plans and proposals. He exclaims "What, What, What! [his habitual phrase] all Wrong! all Wrong." On his right Fox is seated, but falls back dismayed, his chair collapsing; he holds 'Proposals for a General Peace', saying, "I am certain John Bull will like my plan better than any of them, sign mine." Next him is Ellenborough, in wig and gown, his left hand on the back of Fox's chair, which (perhaps) he is causing to fall; he proffers a 'Plan of a New Mode of Justice', and says: "The only specimen among them of a knowledge of the Subject, Sign this." (The inclusion of the Lord Chief Justice in the Cabinet was much objected to, on constitutional grounds, see 'Ann. Reg.', 1806, pp. 28-33, and BMSat 10563.) Moira, in regimentals, kneeling on a chair on the extreme right., leans forward, one hand on Ellenborough's shoulder, to present a 'Project for improveing of Ordinance'; he says: "By St Patrick now, if you was to put the whole of them together you would not be able to make a bit of sense out of them, this is the only one for John Bull." Windham, next Ellenborough, faces the King, presenting a paper inscribed 'War on the Continent', and saying, "I say nothing more or less than that they are all bad but this". Behind him Tierney stands, profferring a blank paper; he says: "Only look at mine & you'll be convinced its quite the thing." The others are on the King's l. Sheridan, a pendent to Fox, leans forward with his paper: 'Manager of the Finan[ces]'; he says: "Here sign this, this is the only good plan of management, all complete nonsense compared with this" [the hopeless confusion and debt in which the finances of Drury Lane were involved by Sheridan's management are satirized]. He wears, under his laced coat, the chequered waistcoat and breeches of Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. Behind him is Grenville, his partly obscured paper inscribed on the; he says: "This is the only well digested plan pro bona [sic] Publico, you may depend upon it." Petty's paper is blank; he says: "This petty effusion of Ideas you'll find full of weighty argument on every subject I assure you." Erskine (the arch-egotist, see BMSat 9246, &c), in wig and gown, and with the Purse of the Great Seal, leans forward with a blank paper to say: "This is the only learned plan among them, which I have arranged, I' I' I." "George III (l.), just risen from the throne, kicks Grenville from the presence, holding him by the pigtail, and raising the sceptre to smite. Other members of the Ministry flee in confusion, their gestures showing that they also have been kicked. The Kings head, as a sign of respect, is hidden by a pillar in heavy shadow which supports the voluminous canopy over the throne, itself in full light. A large label floats from the King: " - what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you! - what you thought I was like little-Boney & would turn Turk, or any thing? - but if You have no Faith or Conscience - I have!! - ay, & a little Old Protestant Spunk too! - So Out with you all!! - out! - with all your Broad-bottom'd- Popish Plots!!! - Out with you - out! - out! - out!" Grenville wears peer's robes, which fly back, exposing his heavy posteriors (cf. BMSat 10530) to the King's toe. He drops a long scroll: 'Catholic Bill - for bringing the Papists into Power & supporting the Broad bottom Jesuits in their Places for securing the Papists in commanding of the Army & Navy & all the Public offices - .' This tears as it floats over the shoulder of Howick, the mover of the Bill. Grenville is propelled against the massive Ellenborough, who hurries forward with a savage backward glare. The spectacled Buckingham looks up at his brother in dismay. Temple, huge and globular, waddles off, feeling his damaged back. In front of him, Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), slinks off stooping low. In the foreground Petty and Erskine lie on their backs, legs in the air, both in their gowns, Erskine having dropped the Purse of the Great Seal. Behind the nearer figures are (l. to r.): Windham, Moira with both arms raised, and Lauderdale, looking to the left.; next, Sidmouth in full flight, and on the extreme right. a head identified by Miss Banks as Fitzpatrick, but resembling Gillray's Adair. On the back of the throne within a wreath: 'G 3d/ R.' On its r., and on the extreme left., is a stool which supports a cushion on which rest a large 'Bible' and a crown. "From slits in a huge green bag, labelled 'Evidence against the Q...n', peer the heads of five witnesses against the Queen. Round it stand puzzled and apprehensive Ministers discussing their plans. Castlereagh, on the extreme left, faces Sidmouth who stands with flexed knees holding a constable's staff, one hand on the bag. He says: "Well Gentlemen! we are pretty well in for it now--we must lie through thick and thin to do any good, and get as many as we can to do the same, or it is all up with us; what say you Doctor have you any specific for the occasion." Sidmouth: "Friend Derry I could as soon produce the Philosophers stone or Elixir of Life but if your brazen face can't bring us through it is a forlorn hope, however here is some chance in the Bag!" The head of a man crouching in the Bag looks up to say: "Yes I have some choice Tales to communicate what with Bargemen--Chambermaids--W....s and Rogues, whom I have had the honor to associate with. I shall be able to COOK up a high seasoned dish that his M.....y will relish." On the right of the Bag stands Canning, scratching his head with a puzzled expression; he says: "Curse that City Hop Merchant [Wood] he has thrown bitter into this Brewing with a vengeance! I'll try what a dash of my wit will do, or we shall be obliged to swallow it ourselves!" A pretty female head looks up at him from the Bag, to say: "I say Mr. Flashman! don't stand scratching your head in that manner but hear what I have to tell you when a woman is determined on revenge she will stick at nothing to accomplish it--turn me away indeed for a little amusement with Peter, when my husband was out I hate such scrupulous Modesty. I'll swear any thing you wish." Three faces appear at smaller slits, saying respectively: "I'll swear!"; "So will I!"; "So will I to any lie." Eldon (right) in Chancellor's wig and gown, walks off to the right, holding a rolled document: 'Rex [vers]us Regina'. He says with a meditative frown: "Well Gentlemen I shall go home and consult about it. I dont like to decide too hastily Look before you leap ought to be the Motto of my Seal" [cf. "Fox as Abdallah, captain of the thieves, leads his band towards the treasure-cave; he stands in profile to the right., facing the cave where a Chancellor's gown and a Chief Justice's gown are suspended. On a table decorated with the Royal Arms are three coronets; in front of it, two sacks of 'Cash', a mace, large rolls of parchment inscribed 'Places' and 'Pensions'. The thieves all wear jewelled turbans with aigrettes, Turkisn trousers tucked into boots, zouave jackets edged with fur over short sleeves. Each holds a sabre. Fox exclaims "Open Sesame." The thieves are crowded together behind Fox and Sheridan, who points to the cave, turning round to say: "Glorious spoils comrades in this Cavern of Ours, surely there is enoug to satisfy us all, I long to lead a sober steady Life." The other thieves are not characterized, and it is not clear to which speaker the different speeches belong. Behind and between Sheridan and Fox is Sidmouth saying: "Blister me [cf. BMSat 9849] if I dont think my exploits deserve that roll of Parchment." Windham (regarded as a war-monger, cf. BMSat 9871), says: "I should like a little cutting and slashing befor I left off Buisiness!" The Marquis of Buckingham, indicated by spectacles, says: "If the Cady will but make me a Viceroy ill give up this buisiness at once." This speech is also connected with Bedford's profile Next the head of the latter is that of the tall Moira. Erskine (1.) says: "I'll take the black gown trim'd with gold, and the valuble [the mace] that belongs to it. for my share". An unappropriated speech must belong to Ellenborough (not discoverable): "Well I'll take the one with the Fur upon it, and some thing to make up for the want of Gold trimming." Others of the band are little Lord Henry Petty looking up at Sheridan and the bulky Grenville with his sabre resting on his shoulder. "George IV, dressed as Henry VIII and with cavalry boots decorated with rosettes, sits on the throne (right), shrinking angrily from oxen wearing civic gowns who bow, presenting petitions. All the horns of the oxen are tipped with tiny caps resembling caps of Liberty; a slightly larger pair protects the prongs of a fork held up on the extreme left above the massed heads of the beasts. On this a placard is speared: 'Petitions from every Part of the World--(Hole's and Corner's excepted) to Dismiss the Ministers-- signed by upwards of 999,999--Millions of the Brute Creation.' The petitions of the four beasts in the front row are headed: 'Petition of Lord Mayor & Citizens of London to Dismiss Ministers'; 'Petitions from every part of England & Wales to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; '. . . ions from every Part of Scotland to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; 'Petitions from every part of Ireland . . . [ut supra]'. Hooves rise from cattle behind holding more petitions: 'from Europe'; 'From Asia'; 'from Africa'; 'from America'; 'from every Honest Man'. The canopied throne is raised on a dais of three steps, the footstool is a cushion supported on a (carved) elephant; but the King's feet are drawn back. His right hand is on his hip; he holds an oddly shaped sceptre in the left hand. The back of the throne is framed by carved mannikins with shackled hands and feet; a large crown rests on the heads of the two uppermost. The back of the canopy has a pattern of writhing serpents. Ministers, much caricatured, stand on the right and left of the dais. In the foreground (right) and on the King's left, Wellington, with the apron and steel of a butcher (as in British Museum Satires No. 13288), with gauntlet gloves and with a star on his tunic, holds a blood-stained battle-axe. Sidmouth, as Court-fool, sits in profile to the left on an apothecary's mortar, wearing a double-peaked fool's cap and a star, and holding a bladder which is his clyster-pipe. Behind is Eldon, scowling savagely and holding the mace and the Purse of the Great Seal. A bishop holding a crosier stands on either side of the throne, behind the Ministers. A staff supports an emblematical cask which a naked Bacchus bestrides. On the King's right is Liverpool, holding a tall staff to which a green bag is tied (see British Museum Satires No. 13735). Next him is Castlereagh, blandly sinister, holding a scourge, and with a bunch of keys hanging from his belt; he stares at the petitioners. A tiny Vansittart is beside him, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, with an 'X' on his breast above a chequered pattern, hung diamond-wise. Immensely fat and absurd beefeaters stand along the back of the room under quasi-Gothic windows of stained glass. All hold tridents and turn their eyes towards the petitioners, grinning grotesquely. Each window is centred by an escutcheon on which a decanter is the chief object. The upper part of each is filled by a design of three large peacock's feathers (see British Museum Satires No. 13299). "Pitt and Dundas, Fox and Sheridan face each other across a long narrow table, smoking long pipes and puffing clouds of smoke in each other's faces. The gallery of the House of Commons is indicated in the background. At the head of the table (left) in a raised arm-chair (in the manner of the chairman at a tavern-club) sits a man in the hat, wig, and gown of the Speaker (Addington) [Identified by Wright and Evans as Loughborough, 'cogitating' between the parties; this is inconsistent with the House of Commons setting and with Loughborough's appointment (26 Jan. 1793) as Chancellor.] holding the mace, which has been transformed into a crutch-like stick. He puffs smoke at both Treasury and Opposition benches. Pitt, on the Speaker's right, holds a frothing tankard inscribed 'G.R' and directs a cloud of smoke at Fox, who puffs back. Before Fox is a tray of pipes and a paper of tobacco, implying that he excels in abuse. On the extreme right Dundas, a plaid across his coat, puffs at the scowling Sheridan seated close to Fox; he has a punch-bowl inscribed 'G.R' in which he dips a ladle. Small puffs of smoke issue from the pipes, great clouds from the smokers' mouths, as in BMSat 8220. "The White Horse of Hanover (the King) kicks violently; he has thrown off members of the Ministry who lie under his heels, while Howick and Grenville are about to fall from the saddle; the reins have broken. On the horse's shoulder is the star of the Garter. Grenville, on the hind-quarters, his peer's robe floating behind him, holds the (torn) 'Catholic Bil[l]', while he clutches the slipping Howick. In the middle distance (l.) John Bull, a yokel in a smock, watches delightedly, saying, "Dang it! he has kicked um off at last zure enough! Aye, Aye, it was that cursed Catholic Bill tickled his rightump and set him a Kicking." Sidmouth lies in front of the animal, holding up his arm; he clutches a clyster-pipe (cf. BMSat 9849). The others (l. to r.) are Petty and Erskine in their gowns; the former clutches Howick's r. ankle, dragging him down; the latter sits on a cushion inscribed '4.000 Pr Anm' [see BMSat 10714.] He says: "I've had a cursed short ride! and if it had not been for this little cushion I should have a confounded thump on my Rump." Ellenborough tries to protect his head from the horse's heels. Sheridan, as Harlequin (see BMSat 9916), sprawls on the ground, bleeding at the nose. Moira runs off, as does Temple, also with a bleeding nose; he says: "Curse that Stone I've broke my Nose against it." "George III stands on a low rectangular platform placed upon a boarded floor and is approached from all sides by applicants for office. He is in back view, but turns his head in profile to the left, to inspect a group through his spy-glass, saying: Well Gentlemen,--I have taken a peep at you all: but I am afraid that you won't do--for some of you are too Heavy & Broad-Bottom'd for Service; & the rest seem to have no Bottom at all.--So Gentlemen, I think I shall he content with my Old Servants. In the front row (left), bowing low, are three Grenvilles, the Broad-Bottoms par excellence (see No. 10530): Grenville, holding a gold-laced coachman's hat and long whip, says: Does your Honor want a steady Broad-Bottom'd Coachman to drive you; in bowing he has split his tight breeches. His nephew Temple is next him, then the spectacled Buckingham who says: We'll do any Thing; his son (Temple) adds and in any Way! [cf. No. 10721]. Close behind is the emaciated Sidmouth, hat in hand and holding out a bottle labelled Cathartic; he says: Pray your Honor remember Doctor Slop! your Old Apothecary, who Physick'd the French! [see No. 9849]. Next him and nearer the spectator stands Whitbread, dressed as a porter, and mopping his head. His porter's knot is on the ground, inscribed: Saml Froth his Knot--Carries any Weight in any Weather. He supports against his knees a huge rectangular pile of Motions to be brought in the House of Commons. These are inscribed: Motion against Royal Family [cf. No. 11234]; Motion against the Ministry; against the War; against y Judges; against the Church; against Magna Charta; Motion against. He says: If his Honor wants an Honest Porter, I'm his Man! Behind him and on the extreme left Lord Henry Petty capers to a dancing-master's kit which he plays with his fingers; he asks: Does his Honor want a Fidler to play a Jig [see No, 10589]. Behind Petty and Whitbread are two men dressed as chairmen with straps across the shoulder: one is Grattan; the other (?) Ponsonby, asks: Does his Honor want a pair of Irish Chairmen to carry his Honor clean through the Mud? "Addington and Hawkesbury, in the gateway of the Treasury (inscribed 'Granary'), snare three bats with the heads of Grey, Sheridan, and Tierney. Addington kneels on one knee holding out a dark lantern and a hat with a tricolour cockade filled with papers inscribed 'Sinecure', 'Place', 'Annuity', 'Pension', 'Post'. Hawkesbury, standing behind him, holds out a net supported on two sticks in which to catch the creatures which fly, like harpies, straight towards Addington, dazzled by the lantern's rays. Grey's eyes are fixed on the lantern, those of Tierney and Sheridan, the last with an expression of eager greed, on the papers in the hat. Beside Addington is a sack of 'Sterling British Corn', overflowing with guineas. After the title: '"Bat-catching, (says Buffon,) does not require much art, for, flying always in the Night, they are easily attracted by a Dark-Lanthorn & being always hungry, may be easily caught, by a few Cheese-Parings, or Candle Ends; - they are so rapacious, that if they once get into the Granary, they never cease devouring, while there is any thing left." - Vide. "The Ministry defend 'The Citadel of Office' behind a high stone wall against different Opposition groups. The chief defence is by the tiny Perceval who fires a cannon from whose muzzle issue three heads intended for Wellesley, Ryder, and Melville. In the centre the wall is breached, and Eldon looks from the gap, weeping; behind him is the Woolsack, inscribed 'Wool'. Lord Grey, on tiptoe, reaches up to seize his gown, while he flourishes a paper: 'Report of Physicians 1804'. Erskine, quite bald and with his (former) Chancellor's gown over his arm, reaches up to tug at the Chancellor's wig. Seated on the wall at the lowest point of the breach is Yorke in back view; in his pocket is a 'List of my Friends Cambridge' [see No. 11535]. He hands down a large seal bearing an anchor to Whitbread who straddles a cask floating in water which adjoins the 'Citadel' on the right. Whitbread takes this emblem of the Admiralty, flourishing a tankard (cf. No. 10414). On the left of the breach Sir Vicary Gibbs, brandishing a rolled document inscribed 'Law of Libel', defends himself vigorously against Romilly, who drags at his gown and has a similar weapon inscribed 'New Statutes'. In Romilly's pocket is a paper: 'New Bankrupt Laws'. Farther to the left the three Grenvilles, Lord Temple, the Marquis of Buckingham, and Lord Grenville, level a battering-ram against the wall. The ram has a ram's head, as in heraldry, but with a human face, and is intended for Ponsonby, leader of the Opposition in the Commons. On one horn is spiked a paper: 'Catholic Emancipation'. Between them and Romilly, little Lord Lansdowne (Petty) sits on the ground squirting a large syringe over his shoulder at the wall. Next the ram Moira, stiff and aloof, holds up a fox with the head of Lord Holland (nephew and political heir of Fox), whose fore-paws, holding a paper of 'Resolutions', have reached the top of the wall but are caught in a trap. On the extreme left. Tierney bestrides a wooden horse whose hind-legs are broken off; it is inscribed 'Finance'. A bundle inscribed 'New Budget for 1811' is strapped to his back; he fires a pistol inscribed 'Bullion Report', but he is about to be thrown, so that the pistol points backwards over his head. "Fantastic insects (l.), with human heads assail a hive (r.) standing on a low and very solid wooden stand, the 'Treasury-Bench'; ministerial bees emerge to defend it. The apex of the hive is a royal crown from which sprout ears of straw. In the upper left. corner is the grotesque body of Sidmouth terminating in a clyster-pipe inscribed 'Clysteria Ministeria'; the wings are bottles inscribed 'Emetic' and 'Cathartic' [cf. BMSat 9849]. Above him flies the head of (?) Fitzpatrick between wings inscribed 'Hedge Lane' and 'Chick-lane' (London slums and resorts of prostitutes). An adjacent aquiline profile resembles George Hanger. Below, and to the right., is Lauderdale, his wings patterned with tartan. Above (r.) is Erskine, in barrister's wig and bands, both wings inscribed 'Protest'. Next (r.), Moira is supported on ostrich-feather wings, indicating the Prince of Wales (see, e.g., BMSat 10253). "A burlesqued illustration of the quotation from 'Paradise Lost' etched below the design ... In the upper left corner of the design, and in the background, an aged St. Peter holds open a small arched door, putting one of his three massive keys into the lock. The irradiated doorway is 'Popish Supremacy'; through it is seen a table, also irradiated, spread with loaves, fishes (cf. BMSat 10697), and wine. A golden staircase receding in perspective ascends in a curve to the door from the summit of the globe, on which 'Ireland' (the more conspicuous) and 'England' are marked. A procession of petitioners winds up the globe from the lower margin of the design; its leaders have begun to ascend the stairs but have been struck by three mighty blasts of wind. These issue from the mouths of Pitt, Hawkesbury (just below), and Sidmouth (considerably lower) Their profile heads emerge from dark clouds on the extreme left. The blasts have overthrown the leading petitioners: Grenville, in bishop's robes, staggers back with outstretched arms, his crozier and mitre fall, and the Catholic Petition blows from his hands, tattered by the wind, in a stream of 'popish' objects which slants upwards across the design. Immediately behind him, full face, the spectacled Buckingham staggers backward. He is dressed as a monk. In front of the two brothers Moira has fallen on his back on the third stair, kicking wildly, his upright l. leg expressing his characteristic stiff rigidity. He wears a surplice over regimentals and spurred boots, and his sword has broken. He has dropped the halter of the Irish bull on which sits Fox, dressed as a cardinal, the central figure of the design. The bull, snorting flames, rears violently, throwing Fox back into a horizontal position. Round its neck is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Order of St Patrick', from which hangs a medal with a profile of 'Buonaparte'; on its head is a bunch of shamrock. Fox is a Papal Legate; he is about to fall, and drops his triple cross to which is attached a tattered tricolour banner, inscribed 'Catholic Emancipa[tion']. His cardinal's hat flies off; from his left hand blows a document with many seals: 'Hierarchical Powers of ye Legate-Cardinal Volpone'. Mrs. Fitzherbert, a Mother Abbess, has fallen headlong from the stairs on to the globe. "Heading to a printed broadside: ... 'New Version', verses printed in two columns below the (printed) title. The Duke of York, with a gauntleted fist, strikes in the face the startled King, who staggers, decanter in hand, saying, "Theres no dependance on the Army." The Duke answers: "Not for you." A supper-table, with decanters, &c., overturns on the right, the King's chair on the left; the chair is decorated with an irradiated wine-glass flanked by bowing Chinese, and, like the table, is fringed by bells. Behind the King are two bottle-holders, the bottles in the shape of a 'Green Bag' [see British Museum Satires No. 13735], and so inscribed; they are Castlereagh and Liverpool, who are backed by Sidmouth and Canning. They say: "Never fear--we are here," and "Never fear." Behind the Duke is the Queen between two ladies; she says: "Fair play's a Jewell Face to Face Truith [sic] will come out." Four of her supporters watch from the left: Wood in his alderman's gown, and holding a 'City Address', says: "A blow has been Struck who feels it?" Burdett, next Hobhouse, and holding a 'West' [minster Address], says: "When Britons strike they strike home." The fourth is a barrister (one of the Queen's legal advisers, not resembling Brougham). The sixth and seventh of ten verses: Said Ca . . tl . . gh I know the Cause, Y . . k's for your 'R .... l Rib', Sire, Your M .... y shall have New Laws, You know we never gib, Sire. "An imitation of British Museum Satires No. 9012. The profiles of George IV (left) and Queen Caroline (right), replacing those of George III and Pitt, and joined together by the merging of the former's wig and the latter's hair, rest on a dish supported by the King's massive whiskers and heavy jowl. The King is coarse, drink-blotched, melancholy, and larger in scale than the Queen, who is flatteringly depicted. A cherub's head supported on wings (left) blows a blast of 'Public Opinion' against a small crown, driving it from the King's head and breaking it in half. The left half is dim and partly obliterated; the right half, belonging to the Queen, is solid and bright. A ribbon hangs from each half: one, torn into three pieces, is inscribed 'God Sav/e Great G/eor'; the other: 'God Save Queen Caroline'. Towards the cherub is directed a counterblast of 'Persecution and Malice', issuing from a bladder (or clyster-pipe) blown by a saturnine profile (intended for Sidmouth) in the upper right corner, supported on webbed wings."--British Museum online catalogue

"The King and Queen are tied together back to back, by a ribbon inscribed 'The Matrimonial Knot. Keep thee only.. unto her, so long as ye both shall live.' The Queen (left), richly dressed and with three feathers in her hair, stands looking towards Justice, who takes her right hand. She says, her hand on her breast, "Nothing but death shall e'er divorce my dignities" ['Henry VIII', III. i]. Justice stands among clouds; she says: "Your exemplary conduct is worthy imitation, as during your husband's ill treatment every effort you exerted to reclaim him, which failing, the world must approve your seeking refuge in the wholesome and protecting laws of your country.--I will be your guide." Brougham stands on the extreme left, poorly characterized but holding a rolled document inscribed 'To Mr Brougham'; he says: "Let slanderous tounges [sic] say what they will they are "Trifles light as air" ['Othello', III. iii] for "She is every inch a Queen." [Adapted from 'Lear', IV. vi]." The King leans against the bond that joins them, straining hard to break it; he puts his hands on the shoulders of Castlereagh who holds him round the waist, the first of a chain of three who pull hard to help him to break loose. The King: "Heigho! how to get un-married; thats the question! There is but little trouble in tying the knot, but your quizzes of the cloth draw it so d----nd tight, Pull away Derry, Pull away Deary Pull away Doctor." Sidmouth tugs at Lady Hertford (or Conyngham) whose arms are round Castlereagh. Castlereagh answers: "If we could entice that blind Lady from her, we might do some good." "Justice stands on a small rocky plateau surrounded by waves. She holds up a pair of scales; on one scale (left) stands the Queen, noble and dignified, in royal robes, the crown at her feet. She far outweighs the other scale, on which is a huge green bag: 'Ev[ide]nce a[gainst] [t]he [Que]en'; Castlereagh, Sidmouth, and Canning stand round it, with a serpent as pendant to the crown. The Queen holds out a scroll headed 'Righ[t] ... of ... Queen' and an open book: 'Liturgy'. Castlereagh holds out to her a scroll headed '50,000 pr An'; he says: "Another Bag (now almost ready) Will make the Balance firm & steady, And certain other pond'rous stuff Will make the Lady light enough." Sidmouth flourishes a clyster-pipe (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849). Canning stands behind the Bag on the extreme right; he says: "I wish to God that I was out Of this infernal mounting Scale, For plainly I percieve a rout, And that the Lady must prevail." The Queen: "Vipers Go! I can't endure you, You wrong me I assure you, Yet still I spurn the wrong, and view, With calmness all your Bag can do." "George IV (right), as Henry VIII (see British Museum Satires No. 13664, &c.), wearing ermine robes and ruff, sits on a dais under a canopy, his eyes turned sideways to the right. In his right hand is a goblet; on a table before him is a decanter of 'Curacoa'. Against this, at a lower level, is a second table on which is the mace; on each side sits a cardinal, gaping in astonishment at Queen Caroline, as Katharine of Aragon; she stands facing the King at the end of the table (left), wearing quasi-Tudor robes. She declaims Queen Catherine's speech, abridged: "Sir, I desire you do me right and justice, And to bestow your pity on me: for I am a most poor woman, and a stranger, Born out of your dominions; -- If, in the course And process of this time, you can report, And perove [sic] it too, against mine honour aught, My bond to wedlock, or my Love and duty Against your sacred person, in Gods name, Turn me away ;-- and so give me up To the sharpest kind of justice." "Fox, as the Devil, has sprung into the air, supported by small feathered wings inscribed 'Honesty' and 'Humility' and by two stout crutches, which rest upon dark clouds. He has a heavy hairy body with cloven hoofs, and wears a bonnet rouge with tricolour cockade and the triple plume of the Prince of Wales. The two crutches have the heads, respectively, of Sidmouth (left) and Grenville. He wears a long narrow cloak with a tricolour collar; it is inscribed 'Loyalty, Independence & Public-Good'. The end of this is clutched by John Bull, a fat 'cit' (resembling John Gilpin, see BMSat 6886, &c), who is drawn up into the air, losing hat and wig. Fox says, looking over his right shoulder with a sinister grin: "Come along Johnny! - take fast hold of my Cloak, & I'll bring you to the land of Milk & Honey!!!" The terrified John answers: " - O yes, I will try to holdfast! - but I'm damnably afraid that your Cloak may slip off before we get there, & I may chance to break my Neck!" Below John's feet and at the base of the design (left), are the roofs of London, including the top of the gateway of St. James's Palace and the dome of St. Paul's. Fox is flying towards the façade of Carlton House, which emerges from clouds; over its roof rises a sun emitting rays, the disk inscribed 'New Constitution'. Above the colonnade is the inscription 'Carolus. II. Redimmus'. Resting on the clouds below Carlton House are three tiny scenes: 'Liberty': two gamblers throwing dice, one Sheridan the other the Prince; men watch them. 'Chastity', the Prince and Mrs. Fitzherbert, indicated by feathers in her hair, embrace on a sofa. 'Temperance', men carouse at a round table; one sprawls on the floor. Fox, as the Devil (cf. BMSat 6383, &c), under the cloak of patriotism, is carried to power by two props, Sidmouth and Grenville, on whose coalition with the Foxites the new Ministry, see BMSat 10531, &c, is. based. This relies not on St. James's but on Carlton House, the secrets of which, as in Le Sage's story, are revealed in three scenes satirizing the life of the Prince. The allegation that the new Ministry was subservient to Carlton House was natural, see BMSat 10252, &c, and recurs, see (e.g.) BMSats 10530, &c, 10543, 10697, but proved unfounded, see G. M. "The Green Bag, see British Museum Satires No. 13735, &c., is transformed into a hillock covered with grass and foliage, but keeping the contour of a sack; it is inscribed in large letters: 'Commons Green Bag'. On the left it is watched by a group of Ministers, on the right by the Queen and her supporters. The foremost of the latter is Brougham, in wig and gown, who points a rod inscribed 'Queens Attorney General' towards the bag; a mouse crouches in a little hollow at its base. Under his arm is a large document inscribed 'Resolution ..... [Ma]jesty'. The Queen, her hands extended towards him, turns to a second barrister who stands in back-view, saying, "I should make a brave Queen to be frightened at a Mouse." The barrister, Denman, the Queen's Solicitor-General, answers: "A good Conscience is a Wall of Brass, your Majesty will not shrink at a Royal Tiger." On the extreme right, Wood, in an alderman's gown, is speaking to a lady, evidently Lady Ann Hamilton. On the extreme left is a curtain from behind which the King, his head and most of his person being hidden, speaks to Lord Eldon (who like his colleagues is gaping at the bag-mountain): "Why Bags! what's all this!" Eldon, in wig and gown, holding a large document and the Purse of the Great Seal, answers: "The Cat's out of the Bag Sire thats all." Canning exclaims: "Pro-di-gi-ous! as my Friend Domine Sampson [in Scott's 'Guy Mannering', 1815] says!" Castlereagh, very scared, says to Sidmouth: "Doctor could you not prevented [sic] this untimely Birth!" Sidmouth stoops forward, squirting a clyster-pipe at the mouse; in his right hand, like a doctor's gold-headed cane, is a constable's staff. He exclaims: "A Delivery without Nurse or Doctor by Heaven." From his pocket hangs a paper: 'Foreign Circular' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13282]. After the title: 'When mountains cry out, people may well be excused the apprehension of some prodigious Birth, this was the case the Public were all at their wits end, to consider what would be the Issue, and instead of the dreadfull Monster that they expected, out comes at last a contemptible Mouse--The Moral. Much ado about Nothing.-- Reflection. "Members of the new Ministry in a handsome room prepare themselves for office, each intent on his toilet. Both Fox and Grey look into a large pier-glass on the extreme left., whose frame is surmounted by the Royal Arms and Prince's feathers, indicating Carlton House and the Prince's 'ostentatious patronage' of the new Ministry. [W. Fitzpatrick, 'H.M.C., Dropmore MSS.' viii, p. viii.] Fox (Foreign Secretary), wearing a tattered shirt, shaves, holding a small bowl filled with lather. On a chair are the coat (blue with red facings, the Windsor uniform) and feathered cocked hat which he is about to put on; against it leans a sword with a jewelled hilt, while his discarded coat and bonnet rouge with tricolour cockade lie beneath it. Beside him stands the taller Grey, brushing his teeth. He wears naval uniform (as First Lord) Behind him, also in profile to the left., stands Sidmouth (Lord Privy Seal), his head and shoulders the centre of clouds of powder, which Vansittart is puffing at him from a powdering-bag. His Windsor uniform is protected by a long towel; in his coat pocket is a clyster-pipe (see BMSat 9849). In the foreground little Lord Henry Petty struts with pointed toe, delighted at the effect of his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, which trails on the ground behind him, far too long. Windham (Secretary for War and Colonies), behind him, sits full face over a tub, washing his feet; he wears waistcoat and rolled-up shirt-sleeves; his hat and stockings are on the ground. Next is the centre figure, Lord Grenville (First Lord of the Treasury), in shirt and bag-wig, hitching up his breeches, and thus accentuating his heavy posteriors, which gave a second meaning to the term Broad-bottom Ministry (see BMSat 10530). Moira (Master of the Ordnance) stands stiffly with his back to the wall, tying his high black stock. He wears regimentals with boots and cocked hat. The Duke of Bedford, very neat in shirt and breeches, sits on a stool pulling on a top-boot, resting his leg on the left shoulder of Tierney, who sits at his feet, drawing on a Hessian boot. Both are in profile to the right., and are preparing for a journey to Ireland. Beside Bedford are two papers: 'New way of Improving the Irish-Breed of Black Cattle' and 'Road from Wooburn Farm to Ireland' [on this Tierney is sitting]. Behind Bedford, Sheridan struggles into a shirt; on the wall hangs his discarded Harlequin dress with mask and wooden sword (see BMSat 9916). Lord Spencer (Home Secretary), behind and on the r. of Sheridan, in waistcoat and shirt-sleeves, washes his hands in a basin on a table. On the extreme right. is the corner of a dressing-table, in the mirror of which Erskine delightedly adjusts his hat over his Chancellor's wig. He wears an enormously long Chancellor's gown with the Purse of the Great Seal hanging from his arm. Behind him on the wall hangs his discarded barrister's wig. "A companion plate to British Museum Satires No. 13989 by the same artist, and with the same imprint. A Chinese interior resembling that of British Museum Satires No. 13986. George IV as a mandarin, languid and ill, sits cross-legged on a low settee. Peacock's feathers (cf. British Museum Satire No. 13299) decorate his round hat. Sidmouth as a Chinese doctor feels his pulse with concern. At the King's feet is a long rolled document headed 'List of Addresses presented to Caroline Queen of [Engla]nd'. Behind (right), a melancholy Chinese messenger hands Bloomfield (a Chinese wearing a large sword) a paper: 'Bill Thrown Out'. The latter registers dismay with raised arms. There is a slanting cloud of smoke as in British Museum Satires No. 13986. On the wall is a picture of the Queen, with sword and shield, fighting a dragon. "Britannia, terrified, faint, and dishevelled sits on the ground supported by Addington and Hawkesbury, and defended by Sheridan, a Silenus-like and ragged Harlequin. They are on the coast towards which are advancing many rowing-boats filled with little French soldiers. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the foremost boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body, to show that he is Nobody, as in BMSat 5570, &c. The distant French coast (right) is covered with troops marching towards the shore. Clouds of smoke rise from the beach, which is concealed by the foreground. Britannia, wearing Roman dress with cothurnes, raises her arms, and shrieks (parodying Hamlet): "Doctors & Ministers of dis grace defend me!" The 'dis' is scored through but conspicuously legible. Addington holds a bottle of Gunpowder to her nose, and looks in alarm at the approaching army. He says: "Do not be alarm'd my dear lady! the Buggabo's (the Honest Gentlemen, I mean,) are avowedly directed to Colonial service, - they can have nothing to do Here - my Lady! - nothing to do with Us! - do take a Sniff or two, to raise your Spirits, and try to stand, if it is only upon One Leg!" Hawkesbury looks down with deep melancholy, supporting her (cracked) shield, and holding her (damaged) spear. He says: "Yes my Lady, you must try to Stand up, or we shall never be able to "March to Paris"". Sheridan holds Harlequin's wooden sword of 'Dramatic-Loyalty' in his right hand (cf. BMSat 9916). On his left arm is a shield with Medusa's head, the snaky locks inscribed: 'Abuse', 'Bouncing', 'Puffing', 'Detraction', 'Stolen Jests', 'Malevolence', 'Stale Wit', 'Envy'. He wears a hat turned up in front with a tricolour cockade; its crown is a fool's cap with two ears and a bell. Round his paunch is a tricolour sash through which is thrust a paper: 'Ways and Means to get a Living'. He shouts in defiance at the distant army: "Let 'em come! - dam'me!!! - where are the French Buggabo's? - single handed I'd beat forty of 'em!!! dam'me, I'd pay 'em like Renter Shares, sconce off their half Crowns!!! - mulct them out of their Benefits, & come ye Drury Lane Slang over 'em!" Behind, between Addington and Sheridan, is the head of Fox, holding his hat before his eyes; he says: "Dear me - what can be the reason of the Old Lady being awak'd in such a Fright? - I declare I can't see any thing of the Buggabo's!" "A pair of breeches, formerly belonging to Fox, much inflated and forming two merging and transparent globes with projecting legs, is poised (at the seat) on three ostrich feathers, erect in a round bed of (ministerial) roses (see BMSat 10558, &c). Within these globes members of the Ministry sit at a round table, devouring loaves and fishes. The nearest ones are in back view, and have the heavy posteriors characteristic of the Grenvilles (cf. BMSat 10530). Lord Grenville, a fish in each hand, with Lord Ellenborough on his right, Buckingham on his left., and, next the latter, Lord Temple. They sit on a cushioned bench like those of Parliament, which follows the curve of the breeches. The others, left to right from Temple, are Spencer, Windham, Erskine, Petty, Lord Holland, [Identified by his own note.] Moira, who sits full face opposite Grenville, Lauderdale, Sheridan, Howick; Sidmouth on Ellenborough's right completes the circle. All are gormandizing on fish in different degrees, except Spencer and Holland who eat normally. Before Grenville is a dish containing two large fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer', see BMSat 10543, &c. A dog, its collar inscribed 'Tierney', puts its forefeet on the bench, yapping at Grenville's back (cf. BMSats 10128, &c., 10603). On the ground beside him are three cats eating fish in a dish inscribed 'Tabbeys'; their collars are inscribed 'Bet Fox', 'Fitz', and 'Jordan'. Rats surround a dish inscribed 'Scribblers' [ministerial journalists and pamphleteers]. "A view of the House of Commons showing only the Ministerial benches immediately beside and behind the Speaker's Chair, and, on the extreme right, the Speaker and the Clerk with part of the Table. Addington, scarcely caricatured, but wearing gloves, is the principal figure. He stands in profile to the right, right hand extended; in his left is the 'Treaty of Peace with ye Democratick ['Democratic' was then used as an equivalent of Jacobin, cf. BMSat 8310.] Powers'; from his pocket issues a paper: 'List of the new Administration'. On the front bench (left) next Addington's seat, marked by his hat, sits Hawkesbury, nervous and deprecating, legs crossed, crouching forward, holding his chin. Next him is a very fat man with gouty legs, his head concealed behind Addington, identified as Dickinson, see BMSat 9854. Just behind are Nicholls, clutching his cane, and Tierney (not caricatured), both gazing intently at Addington's back. Behind Nicholls is Wilberforce, much caricatured. A fat, youngish man, standing full face (right), resembles Lord Temple. Of the other heads gazing fixedly at Addington only Tyrwhitt Jones (see BMSat 9401 and Index) can be identified: according to 'London und Paris', Jekyll and Whitbread are there. "By the efforts of Pitt, who directs Addington, and of a jester wearing cap and bells, an earthenware jug representing George III is lowered into the sea and fatally damaged by striking a rock inscribed 'Malte'. 'Addington' is a man of straw (his body formed of a bundle of straw), a puppet attached to a pole placarded with his name; Pitt (left) pulls threads attached to the dangling arms and legs, but looks round horrified at the disaster resulting from his machinations. The jester crouches on a rock (right); under his foot is a document: 'Traité d'Amiens' [see British Musueum Satires No. 9852, &c.]; he holds in both hands the rope, lowering the royal pitcher, but the other end of the rope is round Addington's hand and thus is manipulated by Pitt. Malta is a small castellated island with a church and a sharp rock which has gashed the pitcher just where it is decorated with a dog-like lion from whose head a crown falls. "A sequel to No. 11384. A fantastic scene in Oxford representing Grenville's installation as Chancellor, which took place at Commemoration, 3 July 1810. Grenville rises in a balloon above a vast applauding crowd; his inflated and spherical posterior fits into the shallow bowl which forms the car. He wears a papal tiara and his Chancellor's gown; a large cross is on his posterior. He extends his arms horizontally, scattering symbolical objects. These are (left): a Cardinal's hat, a rosary, a mitre set in a ducal coronet, and a book, 'Liber Regis . . . Oxford . . .'; (right): three books: 'Letter to the Earl of Fingal'; 'Irish Mass Book'; 'Liber Valorum'. The spherical gas-bag of the balloon represents an inflated Lord Temple, the crown of the head at the summit, with upturned profile in the arc just below (left); shoes emerge from the opposite pole; from the posterior issues a tail or cloud, streaming upward, inscribed 'Promisses'. The car, decorated with Popish emblems, the Host between winged heads, hangs from cords suspended from a net covering the balloon. Three bishops, seated on asses which crouch in neighing obeisance towards Grenville, reach up eagerly towards the Cardinal's hat, &c. They are in back view, and in the foreground on the extreme left. Behind them is part of the Radcliffe Camera, the greater part being cut off by the left margin. By the door is a placard: 'Order'd That No Doctor of Laws shall be admitted without Bag Wig'. Two men are leaving the building: Lord George Grenville, followed by (?) Thomas Grenville. [Not Windham (as Wright and Evans say) who died in June. Lord Holland says Lord Grenville, but he does not resemble him, and his double appearance is unlikely.] The Marquis of Buckingham looks from the principal window under the dome; Lord Stafford leans from a smaller window below. All four wear bag-wigs and gowns. On a projection above the door stands a chicken with the head of M. A. Taylor (the 'Chick of Law', see No. 6777) puffing a blast up at the balloon. Spectacled and bewigged owls perch on the balustrade surrounding the dome. In the foreground on the right is a large group, many of whom wear doctor's gowns with black masks over their features, tied over bag-wigs that perch awkwardly on their heads. Three of them wave their mortar-board caps towards the balloon: Erskine, Tierney (without a mask and especially deferential), and Lord Holland, his face completely blackened by a mask and wearing a mob-cap. Behind (right) are Lord Grey, Sidmouth holding a clyster-pipe behind his back (cf. No. 9849), Lord Cholmondeley, whose wig is back to front and tilted tipsily over one eye, and Whitbread, who clutches his mortarboard in both hands. In front little Lord Lansdowne capers, holding up the brush and shovel of a chimney-sweep (as Lord Henry Petty he was satirized as an inveterate dancer, cf. No. 10589). Next him, but walking off to the right, is Sheridan, who, unlike the others, does not wear a gown and bag-wig, but is naked except for tattered Harlequin trousers (cf. No. 9916), shoes, and ruffles fastened round his wrists to indicate genteel poverty; he clutches his head with a despairing gesture. In the foreground on the extreme right. Dr. Crowe, the Public Orator, sits on the ground, leaning against a milestone with closed eyes and a contented smile; beside him are an overturned tankard inscribed 'Whitbread Entire' [cf. No. 10421], and papers, 'Oratio Croweiana', which a dog is befouling. The stone is inscribed [blank] 'Miles from Oxford to Rome'. The middle distance is filled with a dense crowd of spectators, receding into a sea of heads. Those in front are doctors in red gowns bowing low as Grenville ascends. In front of the crowd Sir W. W. Wynn and his two brothers (Grenville's nephews), sit together in a little chaise drawn by three galloping Welsh goats (as in No. 9760); they wear bag-wigs and gowns and raise their caps to Grenville. One of the goats gallops over a prostrate man in doctor's wig and gown. A bishop (the Archbishop of York) drives through the crowd (left to right) in an open barouche; he doffs his mitre; the coachman and three fat footmen standing behind wave their cocked hats. The crowd surrounds a wooden booth (left) and a high wagon which serves as platform for a rustic family group to view the display. The booth is placarded: 'Wonder of the World the biggest Flying Elephant in the Whole Fair'. Inside it, tiny figures peer at the posterior of a vast elephant with little wings and the head of Grenville. The background is a fantastic view of Oxford towers, which resembles, and is perhaps based on, a drawing by Rowlandson (reproduced, C. Hobhouse, 'Oxford', 1939, p. 60). The crowd fills a space between the Radcliffe Camera and the wall of All Souls abutting (right) on the west end of the Chapel. Behind (left) is the cupola over the gate of All Souls with (right) Hawkesmoor's twin towers flanking a 'Popish' cross. Tom Tower, Christ Church, much heightened and enlarged (right), behind the chapel, flies a Popish flag decorated with tiara and keys, and is traversed from top to bottom by a great fissure. A satire ridiculing the installation of Lord Grenville as the Chancellor of Oxford University on July 3rd, 1810. The installation followed a divisive election in which Lord Eldon opposed Lord Grenville on political and religious grounds. Opponents like Gillray saw Grenville's installation as a triumph for Catholic Emancipation. Here Grenville rises in balloon over a vast applauding crowd in Oxford. The King looks angrily over his left. shoulder at the old Ministry who are in flight, derisively raising the skirt of his coat. Two labels float from his mouth: 'Approach my Lords & Gentlemen & Kiss my Hand -' and, 'as for You my Lords & Gentlemen you may Kiss - '. Grenville scurries es off stooping, his peer's mantle looped over his arm, leaving coat-tails and posteriors exposed; he says: "This comes of getting into bad Company." Howick, as he hurries off with his Catholic Bill, looks behind him at the King, saying, "I thought we should have cramed it down his throat." Moira, in uniform, stares in consternation. Petty and Erskine, both in their robes, escape together, much alarmed. Behind them, Sheridan slinks off, dressed as Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. The others are Sidmouth, in profile to the left., as is Temple on the extreme right.; between them is the spectacled face of Buckingham, saying, "Aye Aye the Doctor [cf. BMSat 9849] advised him not to swallow it." These fugitives are adapted from BMSat 10709. On the left., behind Portland, (?) Hawkesbury stoops, his lips pursed as if ready to kiss. "Heading to a printed broadside. Four Ministers, summoned by the King, sit at a table bending over a crown broken into two pieces. Sidmouth (right), tilting forward his seat, which is a commode, holds his clyster-pipe; in his pocket is a bottle labelled 'Strong Mixture'. He says: "There seems to have been a flaw in it for some years it only required a slight tap to do all the mischief." Liverpool, next him, says: "Some Foreign Cement or a decoction of steel lozenges [see British Museum Satires No. 13513] properly applied may stick them together for the present, but I'm afraid it won't last long, the parts seem of opposite compositions." Castlereagh says, with a sinister smile: "By the Ghost of my Father I will hold it together by a Tringular [sic] Proceeding. & whip it all round" [see British Museum Satires No. 14135]. Wellington, dressed as a field-marshal, and wearing cavalry boots with huge spurs, sits in a chair decorated with military emblems; he says: "Steel filings and leaded paste is the only Composition to be depended on." At his feet are bayonets and cannon-balls, with (left) a cannon, and a huge ball inscribed 'Bolus'. Behind Sidmouth stands George IV (right) in consultation with Eldon; he weeps, holding his handkerchief to his eye, and says, pointing to his Ministers: "Cant Sid my Tool and L--r--pl, Some how contrive to mend it." Eldon, in Chancellor's wig and gown, holds the lower end of the mace against his chin with a puzzled scowl. He answers: "Dash my Wig if I know what to do! my head's in Chancery." Beside him are two 'Old Green Bags done with' [see British Museum Satires Nos. 13735, 13986]. At the King's feet is a paper: 'Straight Jacket'. By Sidmouth's chair are papers: 'A Blister for the Radicals if they Kick up a Row'; 'A Gagging Bandage', with a pot of 'Poison for the Q . . .' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13868]. Also the words 'Filth', 'Dirt'. On the extreme left, John Bull, a stout and formidable 'cit', is seated on a bale inscribed 'Knowledge is Power' [see British Museum Satires No. 14005]. One hand is on his hip, the other on a bludgeon of 'English Oak'. He says, frowning at the Ministers: "I think the following prescription would be the best Cement, a handful of reformation; a large portion of the abolition of Sinicures [sic], a ladle full of the reduction of Taxes, with a plentiful solution of the Oil of Just Claims, and attention to the wants of an industrious part of the Community, would more safely ensure a permanent union with the separate pieces than all the cement or steel lozengers [sic] in the world." The Queen looks in through a small window, Wood looking over her shoulder; they watch the proceedings, tense and indignant. Above the King's head is a shelf of 'Chinese Toys from Hot Creek': a little pagoda flanked by figures of (left) a fat lady and a thin man (the Conynghams) and (right) a squatting obese man (the King). The last two of seven verses (of a 'New Version'): "She claims a share "To all (I swear!) "That I possess;--but mind her "Good C--tl--gh, "Look sharp--d'y' see "There's Radicals behind her. "The beam of a pair of scales is suspended from a vertical bar terminating in a ring which encircles one of many solid rays from a large sun (l.) surmounted by the Prince of Wales' coronet and feathers. The 'Rising-Sun' (see BMSat 10258) is partly obscured by dark clouds, but its rays extend across the design and illuminate especially Sidmouth and Ellenborough. The former is poised triumphantly on the cross-beam, depressing the r. scale with his foot, while he holds on his shoulders Ellenborough in judge's wig and gown, who manipulates the scale in the same direction. This lower scale contains the 'Broad-Bottomites' ie the Grenvillites, or New Opposition, the other, the 'No-Bottomites', i.e. the Foxites, or Old Opposition. In the latter (l.) the occupants hold the ropes with expressions of anxiety; the inscription suggests that they lack 'bottom' or endurance (a pugilistic phrase). Fox is the most prominent, between Erskine (l.), in Chancellor's wig and gown and with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Grey (r.). Moira, in cocked hat and regimentals, stands stiffly behind. Fox and Grey have bonnets rouges but do not wear them. The other bowl contains Grenville, one hand on his fat nephew Lord Temple; the heavy posteriors for which the family were noted take up much of the bowl. Windham waves his hat triumphantly. Of two other partly obscured occupants one resembles Lord Henry Petty. The scales are suspended above the curve of the globe on which Great Britain and the Continent are indicated. Behind the North Pole (r.) is a setting sun containing a royal crown; its feeble rays are outshone by the heavy beams of the rising sun (or son). "Heading to a broadside printed in two columns. The King, a bloated and whiskered infant, sleeps in a cradle, rocked by Sidmouth (right), a lean old woman wearing a cap and bag-wig, who sits in a rocking-chair, his clyster-pipe (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849) on the ground. The cradle is surmounted by a pagoda with bells, and ornamented by two large crocodiles, representing the Chinese dragons of the Pavilion, cf. British Museum Satires No. 12749. On it are also a sun, with a fool's cap in its disk, between crescent moons. Round the cradle lie toys: soldiers, mounted lancers, &c., on wheels, a cannon, a sceptre, a crown with a toy windmill stuck in it. With these are papers: 'Divorce'; 'Protocal' [sic]; 'Send her to Hell'. The infant holds a coral and bells and a corkscrew. Castlereagh sits over the fire warming a napkin. Canning (see British Museum Satires No. 13737) walks off to the left, disgustedly carrying the pan of a commode decorated with a crown and 'G.R.' On the chimneypiece are pap-boat, bottle of 'Dolby's Carminative, &c'. (Dolby was a radical bookseller, 'Dalby's carminative' a well-known remedy for infants). A large 'Green Bag' hangs on the wall. "Stoddart sits in the centre of the design blowing through a trumpet a blast of abuse towards the newly-arrived Queen (left) while holding out copies of his newspaper towards four ragged little newsboys (right), who also blow their horns with great vigour. Queen Caroline, tall, dignified, and demurely dressed in black, flinches from Stoddart's blast, and is protected by Britannia and Alderman Wood. She says: "Surely thos Fellows will not be suffered to Insult me in this manner? who is it that Sets them on? who encourages them." Britannia, seated on a very angry Lion, extends her arms, saying: "Welcome Beloved of thy People, the Mother of Englands lost -- & ever to be lamented Hope, will ever be dear to the Hearts of every true born Englishman." Wood, wearing an Alderman's gown, tries to protect her with a shield inscribed: 'No more Douglas's an Englishman's Rights, Justice & Truth'. From Stoddart's trumpet issue the words: 'Treason, Crim Con, no Rights, no Claims, no pretensions, no Prerogatives, no Patronage, no Property, no Soul to be Prayed for, no Justice, no Law, no Protection, Woe to them that espouse her Cause, Woe to them that Speak well of her!!!' At his feet lie newspapers: 'New Times', 'Morning Post', 'Courier'. Castlereagh and Sidmouth (right), who extend admonitory fingers, urge him on: the former says: "hit hard--dont spare now Dr Slop here is a fine Oppertunity for you to indulge your Spleen." Sidmouth, larger than life and shockingly malevolent, says: "Blow away my boys, spread it far and near, lay it on thick, do not stand for Trifles!!!" The biggest newsboy has a bill headed 'New Times' in his hat; another holds a bundle of the 'Courier', 'New Times', and '[Morning] Post'. A third has 'News' in his hat. "The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. Both wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks. Next, Erskine and Ellenborough walk together; Erskine claps to his eye his beloved and discarded Chancellor's wig. At the end of the procession and on the extreme left. are Lauderdale and Moira wearing his cocked hat with a mourning scarf and cloak. All weep, registering deep distress. "George IV (three-quarter length), surrounded by admiring Ministers, holds up a big extinguisher made of paper and inscribed 'Speech from the Throne', which he is about to place over a crowd of tiny Jacobins who surround the Queen and Alderman Wood. All these 'Lilliputians' are on a round table, whose top forms the base of the design except on the right. The terrified Jacobins fall on to papers inscribed 'Libels', 'Address' [twice], 'Sedition'. Alderman Wood steps on the back of one in a frantic effort to escape with the Queen whom he holds in his arms. She is a fat virago, holding up a fire-brand (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13895) inscribed 'Sedition', whose smoke rises into the extinguisher, and a large money-bag, '50 000 per Ann', labelled 'Crumbs of Consolation'. Other Jacobins flee to left and right, escaping the extinguisher, but either falling calamitously from the table, or about to be grasped by the hand of Eldon who sits at the table (left). They have banners and caps of Liberty on poles (or pikes). Among the fugitives is a Don Quixote (left) in armour, wearing Mambrino's helmet, galloping off on horseback, holding a banner. A terrified Jacobin (right) drops a 'Tailors Adress'. Ministers watch the approaching extinction with pleasure: Eldon has a grim smile, Sidmouth and Castlereagh behind him register, one eager delight, the other bland satisfaction. Wellington (right), close behind the King, smiles triumphantly, Liverpool beside him, is in profile, surprised, pleased, and imbecile. "The King and Ministers, as domestic servants in déshabille, surround a rush-light, trying, with fierce intentness, to blow it out. The flame of the light encloses the head of Queen Caroline wearing her feathered hat; the rush is supported on a saveall formed of the head of Wood [Brougham, according to Reid, who is incorrect in some of the other identifications], and placed in a kitchen candlestick standing on a rectangular table. The centre figure is Eldon, his Chancellor's wig formed of a pair of breeches. He leans sideways and the King, wearing a night-cap, looks over his shoulder, blowing downwards. Next them is Wellington, whose blast is better directed than that of the others, but all miss the flame by blowing too low. On the left are two old women, Sidmouth, using his (green) clyster-pipe as a squirt, and Liverpool, whose night-cap is a green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735). Facing these are the Duke of York, next Eldon, and the Duke of Clarence on the extreme left, as a hideous black man, whose strong but ill-directed blast is inscribed 'Slander' [see British Museum Satires No. 14031, &c.]. Three other heads are in shadow, like the King; they watch with anxiety, but are not blowing; they are Castlereagh (left) and two women (right). "A lumbering wagon drawn (l. to r.) by eight asses is stuck fast, up to the axles in water; the asses strain hard to drag it up a steep slope to dry land. Its dilapidated tilt is much patched and is labelled 'British State Waggon 1804'. The wagoner, Addington (r.), kneels on an adjacent bank, and shouts to a fat and jovial John Bull, dressed as a volunteer, who stands on the opposite bank of the deeply sunken lane, his bulldog beside him. Addington wears a smock, but his powdered hair is in a black bag. He holds his long whip and his hat in his right. hand, and extends his left. arm, shouting, " - help, Johnny Bull! - help! - my Waggon's stuck fast in the Slough! - help! help." John, who holds his bayoneted musket, looks down at Addington, pointing behind him with outflung r. arm at thirteen horses with human heads above and behind him on rising ground. He answers: " - stuck fast in the Slough! - ay to be sure! - why dost'nt put better Cattle to thy Wain? - look at them there Horses doing o' nothing at all! - what ether they matches in Colour, if they do but drag the Waggon out o' the Mud! - don't ye see how the very thoughts o' being put into Harness makes 'em all love and nubble one another?" The horses, [The identifications (most being self-evident) are those of Miss Banks, the alternatives in brackets being those of E. Hawkins. Wright and Evans arrange them differently and omit Spencer and Lansdowne.] though close together, are in groups. On the extreme left., and rather behind the others, Lord Spencer (or Carlisle) rubs noses with Carlisle (or Lauderdale), Erskine (in wig and bands) with Wilberforce. In front of this group the bulky Lansdowne (or Norfolk) lies on the ground, asleep, his back to the others. Next, Grey turns his head towards the haughty Buckingham, who wears spectacles and a Garter ribbon. Their backs are turned to the main group of four: Fox, with a foreleg placed on Grenville's shoulder looks up affectionately at the latter, who responds with a complacent smile. Pitt watches the pair with haughty benignity; Canning, behind, watches them intently. On the extreme right. Sheridan (a plump piebald), scowling fiercely, kicks up his heels at Windham, who retorts with a blast of excrement, his head turned towards Fox and Grenville. In the foreground (l.) is the stage-wagon (the slowest form of transit), drawn by its eight undifferentiated asses. The tilt is open at the back, showing it crammed with bundles, &c. The centre-piece is a bulging sack: 'Budget for 1804', from which project papers inscribed 'Taxes'. A treasure-chest is inscribed 'Treasury'; coins pour from a hole in its side. It is flanked by two bundles: 'Secret Service Money' and 'Family Pickings'. A bundle of 'Pensions' consists of bulky papers inscribed 'Sinecure'. Large volumes tied together are 'New Acts of Parliament'. Other papers are 'Defence against Invasion'; 'State of Ireland'; 'East Indies'. A bundle of 'Loans for / 84' [sic] contains 'Navy Bills' and 'Exchequer Bills'. There are also three tiny barrels of 'Gun Powder' and a bundle of muskets inscribed 'Volunteers'. "An elaborate symbolical clock has a dial on which the hands are represented by the arms of the Queen, who kneels within it. Canning stands within the smaller disk of the pendulum. The dial and pendulum hang from a curved bar supported on two uprights, one (left) representing the forces of the Army and Navy, the Crown and the Church, and the other the Radicals and their pikes. A fat and carbuncled John Bull, much larger in scale than the other figures, and wearing a huge judge's wig, sits astride the dial where it is surmounted by a crown; he holds a paper: 'Chief justice Bull--Jurisdiction--ad Infinitum'. On the rim of the dial: (left) 'King', 'Lords', (right) 'Commons'. The Queen kneels in profile to the right, her left arm pointing to the crown, her right towards the 'Commons'. The supports of the dial are (left) a cornucopia filled with sovereigns, and (right) a giant cap of Liberty, shaped like the cornucopia, from which project the heads of men wearing bonnets-rouges. On the cornucopia are Liverpool, holding out the 'Green Bag', see British Museum Satires No. 13735, Eldon, Sidmouth with his clyster-pipe, and a fourth Minister. On the bonnet rouge stand four of the Queen's supporters, one (apparently Wood) holding out to her a cap of Liberty. A small scene is inset below the dial, flanked by cornucopia and cap of Liberty. The Green Bag lies on a table, across which Castlereagh (left) and Brougham (right), both wearing boxing-gloves, are fighting, the former on the defensive. Each has a second, Brougham's is a second barrister (? Denman). Below this appear seven vertical rods to which the disk of the pendulum is attached. The centre one is 'Unhappy Medium'. On the left, held by cross-bands inscribed 'Golden Argument' and 'Valuable ties', are 'Royal Sunshine', 'Sinecure', and 'Tangible etcetrias'. On the right, held by 'Magnanimity' [tricolour], are 'Quixotism', 'Public Champion', and 'Radical Celebrity'. Canning stands within the disk of the pendulum, both hands held up, looking in gloomy perplexity to the left. He hesitates between the contrasted lures of the pendulum bars. He is standing between a crown and a cap of Liberty. On the left a winged infant flies off with a money-bag, inscribed '1000', saying, "Adieu!" A similar infant (right) proffers a cap of Liberty, saying, "See here Glory waits thee." Above the disk: 'The Uncertainty of all Sublunary Honors'. The design is bordered, left and right, by the two supports of the beam. On the left a jovial sailor and a handsome soldier stand on a base formed of a 'Treasury Iron Chest'. The corresponding figures on the right are two ragged ruffians with linked arms, each holding a spiked bludgeon and a dagger, who stand on a similar chest: 'Pandora's Box'. Flags are draped above the heads of both: the Royal Arms and Union Jack with a crown (left), and a tricolour flag and a (piratical) black flag (right). Above these are (left) a mitre resting on a Bible, crossed swords, and bayonets, supporting a block on which is a crown. Justice, blindfolded and menacing, stands at her right hand; Truth, irradiated and holding up her mirror so that its rays illuminate the Queen, is on her left hand. A stone slab supporting the throne rests on eight hydra-heads with serpents' masks. The centre head is that of Eldon, with two other judges, one with a leech on the cheek indicating Leach (see British Museum Satires No. 13740). Castlereagh, very Mephistophelian, is on the extreme left, Sidmouth and Liverpool on the right; there are two unidentified heads, one presumably Harrowby. Round Queen, chair, &c. are clouds. "The lion, with the face and wig of Melville, lies gazing up, blood falling on the papers under his paws: 'Plans for Manning tfthe Navy - List of ships built in 1804 ... of ye Line'; 'Abolition of Impress'. He is struck down by the blast from a blunderbuss whose muzzle is a tankard inscribed 'Whitbreads Entire'. This is fired by St. Vincent who crouches (left) behind a withered tree. The blast issues from a circle of froth inscribed 'Report'. Part of it, inscribed 'Condemnation without Trial', passes above the lion and strikes Britannia to the heart. She is leaning against an ancient but flourishing oak on the extreme right. The blast that strikes Melville is inscribed 'Invectives', 'Popular Clamour', 'Envy', 'Disappointed Jacobins', 'Malice'. On the upper part of the withered tree sits a monkey with the head of Wilberforce, holding up an open book: 'Solution of Vital Xianity', but directing at Melville a blast from his posteriors inscribed 'Cant! - Envy! - Abuse! - Hypocrisy! - Cruelty.' Three asses are kicking up their heels at Melville as they scamper off towards the mountainous background. The nearest has the head of Sidmouth, with ass's ears. He is laden with panniers inscribed 'Physick for the Lion.'; these are heaped with medicine-bottles, one labelled 'Emetic for ye Lion'; there are also a 'Clyster for the Lion', and a box of 'opening Pills' (cf. BMSat 9849), The other asses are Hily Addington and Bragge, cf. BMSat 9986. The latter (right) turns his head to say: "Very highly indebted to the Lion, brother Heeley!" His panniers are inscribed 'Provisions for the Doctors Family' and 'Trifles procured thro' the Lions Generosity'; they are piled high with papers: 'Pension to Brother Brag &...'; 'Annuity to all our Cousins'; '£40000 pr Ann'; 'Sinecure'; 'Pension for Aunts'; 'Pension for Brother Hely'; 'Pension'. The other ass (Hiley) answers: "Then give him another kick, Brother Braggey". He is laden with a sack of 'Candid Whorehound'. The lion is also assailed by a fox (Fox) who viciously bites his hindquarters, and by a serpent with the head of Grey (Whitbread's brother-in-law) who bites his neck. Three small rats, wearing legal wigs and bands (right), run viciously toward the lion; they are (left to right): Jekyll (see BMSat 9179), Erskine, and Robert Adair, an ardent Foxite, cf. BMSat 7158. "Fox reclines in an armchair of Gothic shape, his vast swathed legs resting on a cushion, his head against a pillow. He wears a dressing-gown and night-cap. His friends and colleagues stand round him. On his right. is Mrs. Fitzherbert, a meretricious 'Abbess' (cf. BMSat 5181, &c), holding a rosary and placing her hand under his chin; her face and breasts are covered by a large veil of transparent black. On his left. stands a bishop in lawn sleeves and mitre, a rosary hanging from his waist; he puts one hand on Fox's arm, and raises the other in admonition, saying, "O Tempora, O Mores! - Charley! dear Charley! - remember your poor Soul! - & if you're spared this time give us Emancipation - or!!!" His head is concealed, but he is identified by Lord Holland as O'Beirne, Bishop of Meath, educated as a Catholic, and a Whig pamphleteer. Mrs. Fitzherbert says: "Do confess your Sins Charley! do take Advice from an Old Abbess [cf. BMSat 10404] & receive Absolution! - here is Bishop O'Bother, 'twill be quite snug among Friends you know!" Fox says: "I abhor all Communion which debars us the comfort of the Cup! - will no one give me a Cordial?" Facing Fox, and in back view, stands the Prince, holding a handkerchief to his face; he says: "Alas! poor Charley! - do give him a Brimmer of Sack, 'twill do him more good Abbess, than all the Bishop's nostrums!" In his left hand he holds his cocked hat; in a coat-tail pocket is a pamphlet: 'Letter from N. Jeffreys'. Sheridan on the extreme right., furtive and bloated, puts his hand on the bishop's shoulder, saying, "Emancipation! - fudge! - why Dr OBother I thought you knew better!" In his pocket is a paper: 'Scheme for a new Administra[tion]'. Behind him stands Howick, in the extremity of grief, throwing back his head, and holding his handkerchief to his face. Three men stand, on the Prince's l., looking towards Fox, all weeping with raised handkerchiefs. Their heads rise one above and behind the other from the short Petty who wears a laced coat and bag-wig and has a large roll under his arm: 'New Taxes for 1806'. He says "Ah poor me! - If my Dancing-Days are over!" Windham says: "O Lord! what side can I tack round to Now!" The tall Moira says: "I must get back to Ballynahinch! Och! Och." [The allusion is to Moira's Irish estate and to Canning's verses, 'Ballynahinch' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', 9 July 1798, cf. BMSat 9235.] The three '(Ministerial) Grenvilles stand in the doorway (l.) apart from the mourners. Lord Grenville turns to Sidmouth, who is just within the room, putting a hand on his arm, and saying, "Well Doctor, have you done his business? - shall we have the Coast clear, soon?" Sidmouth answers, with sly satisfaction, "We'll see!" He holds a bottle labelled 'Composing Draft' [cf. BMSat 9849]. The spectacled Marquis of Buckingham looks round to say "O! Such a Day as This! so renown'd so Victorious"; his son, Lord Temple, continues: "such a day as This! was never seen!" In the foreground (l.) the fat Mrs. Fox faints in a small ornate chair; under her chair is a square spirits-bottle of 'True Maidstone', with a broken glass beside it. Lord Derby, wearing top-boots, bends over her, holding a bottle to her nose. He says: "My dear old Flame Bet, dont despair! - if Charley is pop'd off - a'nt I left to Comfort you - ?" On a stool at Fox's r. hand is a urinal decorated with Britannia, standing on a scroll: 'Negotiations for Peace between Great Britain & France'. "Fox reclines in an armchair of Gothic shape, his vast swathed legs resting on a cushion, his head against a pillow. He wears a dressing-gown and night-cap. His friends and colleagues stand round him. On his right. is Mrs. Fitzherbert, a meretricious 'Abbess' (cf. BMSat 5181, &c), holding a rosary and placing her hand under his chin; her face and breasts are covered by a large veil of transparent black. On his left. stands a bishop in lawn sleeves and mitre, a rosary hanging from his waist; he puts one hand on Fox's arm, and raises the other in admonition, saying, "O Tempora, O Mores! - Charley! dear Charley! - remember your poor Soul! - & if you're spared this time give us Emancipation - or!!!" His head is concealed, but he is identified by Lord Holland as O'Beirne, Bishop of Meath, educated as a Catholic, and a Whig pamphleteer. Mrs. Fitzherbert says: "Do confess your Sins Charley! do take Advice from an Old Abbess [cf. BMSat 10404] & receive Absolution! - here is Bishop O'Bother, 'twill be quite snug among Friends you know!" Fox says: "I abhor all Communion which debars us the comfort of the Cup! - will no one give me a Cordial?" Facing Fox, and in back view, stands the Prince, holding a handkerchief to his face; he says: "Alas! poor Charley! - do give him a Brimmer of Sack, 'twill do him more good Abbess, than all the Bishop's nostrums!" In his left hand he holds his cocked hat; in a coat-tail pocket is a pamphlet: 'Letter from N. Jeffreys'. Sheridan on the extreme right., furtive and bloated, puts his hand on the bishop's shoulder, saying, "Emancipation! - fudge! - why Dr OBother I thought you knew better!" In his pocket is a paper: 'Scheme for a new Administra[tion]'. Behind him stands Howick, in the extremity of grief, throwing back his head, and holding his handkerchief to his face. Three men stand, on the Prince's l., looking towards Fox, all weeping with raised handkerchiefs. Their heads rise one above and behind the other from the short Petty who wears a laced coat and bag-wig and has a large roll under his arm: 'New Taxes for 1806'. He says "Ah poor me! - If my Dancing-Days are over!" Windham says: "O Lord! what side can I tack round to Now!" The tall Moira says: "I must get back to Ballynahinch! Och! Och." [The allusion is to Moira's Irish estate and to Canning's verses, 'Ballynahinch' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', 9 July 1798, cf. BMSat 9235.] The three '(Ministerial) Grenvilles stand in the doorway (l.) apart from the mourners. Lord Grenville turns to Sidmouth, who is just within the room, putting a hand on his arm, and saying, "Well Doctor, have you done his business? - shall we have the Coast clear, soon?" Sidmouth answers, with sly satisfaction, "We'll see!" He holds a bottle labelled 'Composing Draft' [cf. BMSat 9849]. The spectacled Marquis of Buckingham looks round to say "O! Such a Day as This! so renown'd so Victorious"; his son, Lord Temple, continues: "such a day as This! was never seen!" In the foreground (l.) the fat Mrs. Fox faints in a small ornate chair; under her chair is a square spirits-bottle of 'True Maidstone', with a broken glass beside it. Lord Derby, wearing top-boots, bends over her, holding a bottle to her nose. He says: "My dear old Flame Bet, dont despair! - if Charley is pop'd off - a'nt I left to Comfort you - ?" On a stool at Fox's r. hand is a urinal decorated with Britannia, standing on a scroll: 'Negotiations for Peace between Great Britain & France'. On the ground beside him are a broken dice-box and dice. "A satire on the peace negotiations and on Windham's Training Act. The scene is outside the 'Treasury', the lower part of its façade forming the background. Ministers and their supporters as 'Corporal and Conscripts' obey the orders of their 'Drill-Serjeant' Napoleon, who stands on the extreme left., his jack-boots firmly planted on cannon-balls him height. He extends his sword with an arrogant gesture, and fiercely orders: "Ground - Arms!" Next him, and in back view, but looking up at him, is Fox seated in an invalid's wheeled chair on the back of which are the coronet and feathers of the Prince of Wales. He is 'Grand Double Drums' and is vigorously beating a pair of kettle-drums, one inscribed 'GR' and crown, the other 'N' and crown. He wears a dressing-gown and bonnet rouge, and his enormously distended legs are straddled outside his drums. On Fox's r. is the 'Flugel Man', Grenville, going through the movement as a pattern to the other privates. He kneels on the left knee and grounds his musket, putting up his hand to shield his eyes; his bayonet is broken, as is its sheath. The 'Corporal & Conscripts' drawn up (r.) facing Napoleon attempt the movement with extreme awkwardness and obsequious haste, not excepting Windham the corporal, the end man (r.) of the front rank. Next him is Lord Holland, on both knees, with an amiable smile. Then Sheridan, very bulky and awkward, but unlike the others directing his musket towards Napoleon. Petty, on both knees, flings down his musket with an obsequious gesture. Next him Lord Temple grovels displaying spherical posteriors. Next, at the end of the line, and close to the gate of the Treasury, kneels Erskine, in wig and gown, raising his hat. In the second rank, behind Windham, is Howick, First Lord, deferentially raising a naval cocked hat; Sidmouth staggers back, throwing up his arms and dropping his musket which lands on his face. Next are Spencer, clumsily lifting his musket, and Ellenborough in wig and gown, with a blunderbuss which he seems about to dash violently on the ground. Behind him is Moira, stiff and tall, in uniform with cocked hat, holding up a musket exploding at lock and barrel. Behind and in shadow are (l. to r.) St. Vincent, Hanger, and the Duke of Clarence, all holding up the muskets which the next rank prevents them from grounding. Most of the 'conscripts' wear civilian dress with crossed bandoleers, and are in most unsoldierly confusion. By the Treasury gate and facing Erskine stands the 'Constable of the Corps', Talleyrand, holding a long constable's staff, crowned, his left. arm extended in a gesture of command; one twisted leg is supported by a stilt under the shoe. As ex-Bishop of Autun (see BMSat 8088) he wears a hat whose crown is a mitre, a long gown and bands over his coat, and a rosary. In his mouth is a pen. Above his head a bird with webbed wings and the head of Lauderdale flies towards Fox, clutching a paper: 'Terms of Peace'. In his mouth is a completely are olive branch. The head, with Melville's profile facing his tormentors, is erect; the stem is inscribed 'His radiis rediviva viresco'. These roots or papers are inscribed: 'First Charge Lie Ist'; '2d Charge Lie 2d'; '3d Charge Lie 3d'; '5th Charge Lie 5'; '7th Charge Lie ye 7th'. Clouds of dense smoke issue from these papers and billow to the left. across the upper part of the design, carrying with them the heads of nine of Melville's discomfited assailants whom he regards with a slight smile. By the tub falls a sheaf of bulky papers headed 'Protest'. The heads are (left to right): Erskine (close to a plume of feathers denoting the Prince of Wales), Derby, a judge's wig in back view, [For many years this denoted Lord Loughborough (Rosslyn); he died in 1805.] Fox, Stanhope, Ellenborough (scowling), Howick, Sidmouth, Moira. The thistle is irradiated with rays dispelling the dark smoke and inscribed: 'Judicium Parum', 'Not Guilty', and 'Lex Terrae'. In the foreground is a procession, leaving the platform on which stands the thistle. On the extreme left is the Speaker, partly concealed by the left margin in wig, hat, and gown, but with no body (to indicate that he is nobody, cf.
