Abstract:
"Italian witnesses, in a large bare room or warehouse, where three are being washed in a large bath by Castlereagh, Sidmouth, and Liverpool. The bath is inscribed: 'Waters of Oblivion. Non mi Recordo [sic]--Ministerial Washing Tub--!' The three witnesses are villainous-looking, and coloured brown. Castlereagh empties a bucket over the head of one, saying: "Can the Etheopean change his Colour." Sidmouth, plying comb and scrubbing-brush, says: "Or the leper his Spots." Liverpool turns to a lawyer (right) saying: "I never had such a dirty job in my life." The lawyer, Gifford the Attorney-General, answers: "We must have them perfect in their Story before they go." He holds a document inscribed 'Milan' [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.]. A second lawyer sits at his feet, mending a pair of breeches. He says: "They are truely a filthy set, we must clear them of Vermin." The discarded garments of the men in the tub lie on the ground, with combs, a lump of 'Itch Ointment', and a box of 'Sulphor'. There are also two boxes: one (left) of 'Windsor Soap', the other (right), 'New Rigging from Monmouth Street' (where second-hand clothes were sold). Three ragged ruffians wait their turn, seated on the ground. Two play cards; one says: "Quel Maledetto Sacco"; the other responds "Ah! quel Sacco" (the Green Bag, see British Museum Satires No. 13735). On the wall behind them hang 'Italian Masks and Daggers just imported.' A high shelf runs round the room, on which stand a pile of 'Dutch Cheese', bottles of 'Italian Oil' and 'Botled Frogs', casks of 'Shalots and Garlick', 'Sour Grout', 'Portable Soup', 'Salt Herrings', 'Butter', a huge basket of 'Eggs', and three jars of 'Pickle'. Abstract:
"Queen Caroline as Lucifera sits in a coach made up of objects which figured in the evidence against her. The driver is Bergami, whip in hand (thus representing Satan) on a high box seat; he turns to hand a bottle of wine to the Queen who holds a sack inscribed '50,000' [see British Museum Satires No. 14145]. The beam or chassis is a cannon (see British Museum Satires No. 13850), on this rests the body of the open coach, the front part being the prow of a boat (the polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the centre part a tub, representing the bath, see British Museum Satires No. 13819, the back part, half of the body of a travelling-coach, is surmounted by half a conical tent (see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the whole making a canopy over the Queen. On the tub-section a coat-of-arms is represented by a diamond-shape blank (hatchment-wise) with two supporters, Bergami and the Devil. Motto: 'Ama et Aude'. The six animals harnessed single file and their riders are adapted from the 'Faerie Queene', relevant quotations being etched below, in eight compartments. The procession advances from the right, down a slope towards a slough, on the verge of which the leading animal, an ass, has fallen, throwing its rider, Alderman Wood in his livery gown, who has dropped two large stacks of papers: 'Addresses ready made' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14119] and 'Plate Subscription' [see British Museum Satires No. 14196]. Below: 'Ignorance Might seem the Wain was very Evil led, When such an One had guiding of the way, That knew not whether right he went or else astray.--' [I, iv. 19.] [He replaces the 'Idlenesse' of the original.] The next four carry banners, each topped by a bonnet rouge; the leader is Dr. Parr on a large pig, as 'Gluttony the second of the crew'. He smokes his accustomed pipe, holds an open book; on his banner is 'Un-Sunned Snow' [see British Museum Satires No. 13975]. Below: 'And next to him rode loathsome Gluttony, deformed Creature, on a filthy Swine' [ibid. 21]. Next, on a goat, is Lord Grey, holding a banner inscribed 'Purity' and a staff topped by a burning heart. He wears a garland of white roses over his shoulder. Below: '--Sir G Rat-- In a Green Gown he cloathed was full fair, And in his hand a burning heart he bare' [ibid. 25]. (He is the 'lustfull Lechery' of the original.) He is followed by Brougham riding a wolf (fifth in the original), in wig and gown, holding a broom and a banner inscribed 'Innocence'. Below: 'And next to him malicious Envy rode upon a ravenous Wolf .....He doth backbite and spitefull poison spews' [ibid. 30, 32]. Next (last in the original), riding a fierce lion, is Burdett wearing makeshift and partial armour, a small red cap, and a tricolour sash; he holds up a firebrand and a red flag inscribed 'Victory or Death' [cf. Hunt's motto in 1819, see British Museum Satires No. 13279]. Below: 'And him beside ride fierce revenging Wrath, Upon a Lion loath for to be led, And in his hand a burning brand he hath, The which he brandisheth about his head' [ibid. 33]. Last (fourth in the original) a stout man mounted on a camel holds before him a copy of 'The Times', from a stack of the papers on his knee. He wears an apron with rolled-up shirt-sleeves (like a pressman) and top-boots, and is clearly Barnes (a fair portrait). Large saddle-bags are inscribed 'Hush Money, Pub[lic] Money', and '£500 Weekly'. Below: 'And greedy Avarice next him did ride, Upon a Camel, loaded all with Gold For of his wicked Pelf his God he made, And unto Hell himself for money Sold' [ibid. 27]. The last two inscriptions (right) describe Bergami and the Queen: 'And after all upon the waggon beam Rode Satan with a smarting Whip in hand, With which he forward lashed the lazy Team, As oft as Ignorance ['Slowth' in original] in the Mire did stand [ibid. 36]. So forth She comes and to her coach does climb [ibid. 17] The which was drawn by six unequal Beasts, On which her six sage Counsellors did ride' [ibid. 18]. "A balloon about to rise from the ground encircled by three tiers of galleries or narrow platforms, protected by railings. Behind the railings sit the passengers. In the highest tier are three ladies notorious at that time for their amours ...: Grace Elliott or Eliot, née Dalrymple, known as 'Dally the tall', she holds a fan, turning her head in profile to the left, towards Perdita (Mary Robinson), who clasps her hands ecstatically; Lady Worsley sits on the right. In the centre gallery sit ex-ministers: North (left) and Fox (right) in the centre, North's arm on Fox's shoulder; Fox turns his head to North with an expression of satisfaction. Each rests his right hand on the railing in front of him, and these hands hold an inconspicuous thread which is attached to the nose of the Duke of Portland (left), who turns in profile to the right. On the right, a little apart, sits Burke dressed as a Jesuit (see British Museum Satires No. 6205) looking in profile to the right towards the Pope, who stands on the gallery, emerging from behind the curve of the balloon. He wears furred robes and his triple crown; as a pendant to him on the extreme left is the Devil looking towards the ministers with a pleased expression; over his arm he holds a net. In the lowest gallery sit celebrated quacks and other London characters. These are (left to right) "Vestina', the goddess of Health who advertised the virtues of the celestial bed (incorrectly said to have been Lady Hamilton), sits next her employer, Dr. Graham; they look at each other; she holds a sceptre wreathed with a garland. Jeffery Dunstan, Mayor of Garrat, stands, knock-kneed, with his sack over his shoulder in his accustomed attitude when calling 'old wigs'. Sam House sits resting a foaming tankard of porter on the railing in front of him, the tankard inscribed "House Ward[our] Stre[eet]". Katerfelto, turned in profile to the right, gazes up at the moon through his telescope; in his left hand is a paper, "Wonders, Wonders Most Wonderfull Wonders", the usual heading of his advertisements, cf. British Museum Satires No. 6162. His black cat sits on the railing facing him, saying, "are there Mice in the Moon Master". In the upper right corner of the design is the moon, a crescent-shaped profile inset in a circle, looking down at the balloon. The balloon is encircled longitudinally by eight ropes which meet in a knot beneath it and are there attached to four stouter ropes attached to the four corners of a platform which rests on the ground, from which the balloon appears about to ascend. On this platform is a tub inscribed "Vanity", bubbling over with soapsuds inscribed "Froth". Beside the platform (right) stands a Frenchman capering on one leg and flourishing a knife. He says, "Oh Begar dis be von fine Cargo." ... "Robinson, wearing his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, leans forward from the right to place an extinguisher on the head of Fortune who sits in profile to the left, on a small globe, regardless of her fate. He says: Come Madam put on your Night Cap. She is a comely young woman with feathered wings, and a high-waisted dress with classical sandals. Her Wheel of Fortune serves as back to her seat. She holds out a Ticket £20 000 to an eager and indignant crowd; in her left hand is a full purse. At her feet is a box of jewels, behind her a cornucopia from which pour gold coins, with a bag of Filings. At her feet four little blue-coat boys from Christ's Hospital kneel imploringly. Behind them are a brawny washer-woman and a gaily dressed young woman. The former points to tub, Soap, linen, and brush at her feet, and shouts to Robinson: Let her alone take off the Soap Tax. The latter screams Stop let Me get a Prize first. A burly bare-legged cobbler holds up an old shoe, shouting, give us a Lottery and no Leather Tax. A man next him shouts Shut up the Subscription Houses [clubs such as Brooks's]. The two on the extreme left shout No Tax on Tallow and No Horse Racing. A hideous man grovels on the ground behind Robinson to grab coins and two bags, Filings and Gold Dust, and a Prize Bag. He looks up, saying, Persevere and the Saints shall Praise you. Three men stand behind Robinson, watching; two say, with cynical smiles: Hear Hear I knew they'd Grumble and He's only a Young Chancsellor. The third says with a frown: Little Van knew [better] than to Abolish a Voluntary Tax. On Fortune's right is a pillar on which bills are pasted: Races Kings Cup, over which is a playbill: Fudge a Farce; above both is Reform . . . Parliament . . . "A bedroom scene. Joanna Southcott sits in an arm-chair, attended by three women and four doctors. Between her legs is a large tub inscribed 'Living Water', into which water gushes from a tap projecting from under her petticoats. She leans back with extended arms, exclaiming: "Shiloh! let not this groupe dismay thee | Come forth into the World I pray thee!" One doctor, Reece, superintends the flow of water, kneeling in profile to the left on a large volume: '[R]eec's Medical Guide'. In his pocket is a paper: 'Account of Wonderful Pregnancies'. Behind him a second doctor sniffs at a tumbler of water, saying, "This is a very pretty rig! | Nothing but water d .... n my Wig!" Two others talk together on the right, one peers through a microscope into a goblet; the other asks: "What do you see in the water, Doctor!" He answers: "Bubbles Doctr "the earth hath bubbles, as the water hath ['Macbeth' I. iii]". I said it was all my eye." Behind him, on the chimney-piece, are a medicine-bottle and the bust of a lank-haired man wearing clerical bands. Three women stand behind Joanna's chair and in front of the curtains of a bed. One (left) holds out a lace cap, saying, "Doctor here is Shiloh's cap! bless me! why he has got a watery head! The next says: "Pray Doctr take care of the cawl if there is one." The third, offering a steaming bowl, says: "Come my blessed Lady sip some of this heavenly caudle I have made you." In the foreground (left), Tozer, dressed as an artisan, sits on a three-legged stool, corking up bottles of water. He is identified by a paper hanging from his pocket: 'Tozer Preacher to the Virgin Johanna'. In front of him are a basket of corks and a paper: 'Sermon on the Birth of Shiloh', Corked bottles are on the left, uncorked ones on the right."--British Museum online catalogue
