At centre left, an old woman with the head of a cat, is being bled by a man with the head of an elephant whose hand is on her left breast, a monkey-headed boy holds a basin to catch the blood spurting from her arm. Behind them a man, with a boar's head wearing a work-apron reads from the Grub Street Journal to a man with the head of an ass and a bell round his neck. In the centre a cat-man sitting on a barrel holding a shaving dish has his whiskers trimmed by a barber with an ape's head on top of which is a flamboyant hat with long feathers. An ape-man behind waits his turn, and a man with two wooden legs and a crutch leaves through an open door. Overhead on the left is a projecting sign from which hangs a board showing an owl beneath which is written "Shave & Bleed for A Peny". Stuffed creatures hang from the ceiling: a grotesque fish, an eel with gaping moth, and an ape. The wall at the rear has been chalked with tallies and three wigs hang from it. A table in the foreground on the right has pulled teeth and various barbers' instruments on it. "A leech with the head and barrister's wig of Leach is coiled round an upright cylindrical document to which is tied with red tape a second bill; these are respectively 'Bill of Pains . . .' [see British Museum Satires No. 13825] and 'Divorce'. Propped against the former are two green bags (see British Museum Satires No. 13735), both closed with a large red seal on which is a 'G.R.' monogram. These are inscribed 'Fill'd with Filth and Lies!!!' and 'Lies . . . [L]ies'. With them are other large documents: 'List of Witness[es] against Q . . . N'; 'Expen[ces] & Bribes at Milan'; 'Protoc[ol]' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13764). The small shambling Wilberforce is being pushed towards the leech by Castlereagh (left), who is a pendant to the more stalwart and bulky Duke of York (right). The Duke wears uniform, holds his unsheathed sword, and has a pyramid of cannon-balls crooked in his left arm. A paper, 'Bp Osnabu[rgh]', is thrust through his sash. He says fiercely: "Rascals! "The interior of a barber's shop. The barber, ranting and gesticulating wildly, holds up the open tragedy of Alexander the Great; in his right hand is a pair of tongs. His hair hangs loose and on his head is his barber's basin. He is fashionably dressed, but wears an apron, which, blowing aside in his violent action, displays a large hole in his breeches. A stool, jug, &c, have been overturned, hair-pins lie on the ground, a cat flees in alarm. His little apprentice (left), holding a wig and a tress of hair, looks on with amusement, as do a man and woman (right) who look over a flight of stairs which ascends from the room. The room is a poor one, with plaster coming from the wall, a broken candle on the chimney-piece, over which is a torn print of a tragedy-king reclining on a couch. "A show-room in which ladies are being fitted with various types of underclothing, specimens of which hang from the walls. An elderly man of quasi-clerical appearance fits a very fat lady with knickerbockers and braces; he looks over his shoulder at the spectator; from his pocket issues a roll of 'Complieations'. She is the central figure and regards herself with admiration in an ornate wall-mirror which reflects her face. Her stockings are held up by cords issuing from a disk on each hip. A lady and little girl (left) walk eagerly into the room. A shopman offers two false breasts to a wizened knock-kneed hag wearing knickerbockers. On the right a complacent lady in knickerbockers is having her suspenders fastened by a kneeling shopman. Another, seated on a chair, pulls on knickerbockers; other bulky garments to tie at the knee hang on the wall (left). On a shelf are wigs on stands (see BMSat 9313, &c), and from it hang garments having some resemblance to the modern brassiere (or soutien-gorge) to which braces are attached. There are also suspenders. Beneath the design: 'Dr Trussup takes the liberty to acquaint the Ladies, that he has by dint of intense Study, Astronomical . . . [&c. &c] Calculations, Discovered an immense variety, of Convenient, Comfortable, and Captivating Articles for the Ladies, first, his warm & well contrived Drawers, which will in all weathers, keep warm . ... in spite of the rage for thin covering, they are made of flannell, Cotton, fleecy hose & various other commodities . . . Dr Trussupp has from much observation and reflection, prepared commodious Spring Garters [ ? suspenders] . . . . without that banefull ligatue above the Knee, which makes the Ancle so inelligantly thick & Clumsy, also his wonder-full Wigs . . . but above all, his favourite & accommodating Circassian Vests, alias Bosom Friends, which permits free respiration, prevents all pressure on the chest, raises the languid Breast to the appearance of a Juvenile heaving Bosom. . . . NB resolves all sorts of lawful & unlawful Questions .... "An elaborate symbolical clock has a dial on which the hands are represented by the arms of the Queen, who kneels within it. Canning stands within the smaller disk of the pendulum. The dial and pendulum hang from a curved bar supported on two uprights, one (left) representing the forces of the Army and Navy, the Crown and the Church, and the other the Radicals and their pikes. A fat and carbuncled John Bull, much larger in scale than the other figures, and wearing a huge judge's wig, sits astride the dial where it is surmounted by a crown; he holds a paper: 'Chief justice Bull--Jurisdiction--ad Infinitum'. On the rim of the dial: (left) 'King', 'Lords', (right) 'Commons'. The Queen kneels in profile to the right, her left arm pointing to the crown, her right towards the 'Commons'. The supports of the dial are (left) a cornucopia filled with sovereigns, and (right) a giant cap of Liberty, shaped like the cornucopia, from which project the heads of men wearing bonnets-rouges. On the cornucopia are Liverpool, holding out the 'Green Bag', see British Museum Satires No. 13735, Eldon, Sidmouth with his clyster-pipe, and a fourth Minister. On the bonnet rouge stand four of the Queen's supporters, one (apparently Wood) holding out to her a cap of Liberty. A small scene is inset below the dial, flanked by cornucopia and cap of Liberty. The Green Bag lies on a table, across which Castlereagh (left) and Brougham (right), both wearing boxing-gloves, are fighting, the former on the defensive. Each has a second, Brougham's is a second barrister (? Denman). Below this appear seven vertical rods to which the disk of the pendulum is attached. The centre one is 'Unhappy Medium'. On the left, held by cross-bands inscribed 'Golden Argument' and 'Valuable ties', are 'Royal Sunshine', 'Sinecure', and 'Tangible etcetrias'. On the right, held by 'Magnanimity' [tricolour], are 'Quixotism', 'Public Champion', and 'Radical Celebrity'. Canning stands within the disk of the pendulum, both hands held up, looking in gloomy perplexity to the left. He hesitates between the contrasted lures of the pendulum bars. He is standing between a crown and a cap of Liberty. On the left a winged infant flies off with a money-bag, inscribed '1000', saying, "Adieu!" A similar infant (right) proffers a cap of Liberty, saying, "See here Glory waits thee." Above the disk: 'The Uncertainty of all Sublunary Honors'. The design is bordered, left and right, by the two supports of the beam. On the left a jovial sailor and a handsome soldier stand on a base formed of a 'Treasury Iron Chest'. The corresponding figures on the right are two ragged ruffians with linked arms, each holding a spiked bludgeon and a dagger, who stand on a similar chest: 'Pandora's Box'. Flags are draped above the heads of both: the Royal Arms and Union Jack with a crown (left), and a tricolour flag and a (piratical) black flag (right). Above these are (left) a mitre resting on a Bible, crossed swords, and bayonets, supporting a block on which is a crown. On the opposite side are three caps of Liberty, crossed bludgeon and dagger, and pikes, supporting a block on which is yet another cap of Liberty."--British Museum online catalogue
