Abstract:: "A portrait-painter painting a family group of a man and wife and their little boy. The group (right) is raised on a low semicircular platform, the couple sit on a high-backed settee without arms, the little boy on a stool in front of his mother. The child, though in his ordinary clothes, is holding a cupid's bow and a sheaf of arrows (reminiscent of the family portrait in the 'Vicar of Wakefield'); a large quiver holding arrows is slung across his shoulders, a wreath is on his head; he yawns violently. The man, in profile to the left, is obese and wears a short bushy wig, a dove sits on his left wrist; only the toes of his shoes reach the ground. His wife sits on his right holding a dove on her right hand; she turns towards her husband, looking straight forward with a fixed and painful smile; she wears ringlets and a cap of lace and ribbons on her high-dressed hair. The artist (left) stands at his easel which supports a large canvas and is placed close to his sitters. He wears spectacles, a bag-wig, and ruffled shirt, and holds a palette in his left hand. He looks towards his sitters with an insinuating smile, which, together with his attitude and the figure of the man sketched on the canvas, shows that he is intent on flattery. High up on the wall behind him are two oval bust portraits, one (left) of a clergyman, the other of a lady. Behind the sitters is a tall screen of several leaves."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: An ugly man in old-fashioned dress stands full-face, toes turned in, squinting, and looking downwards. An 'Address' is in his right hand, his left hand is in his breeches pocket; a document inscribed 'Observations' protrudes from his coat-pocket. His scanty audience of seven men, most of them sleeping, is behind him, on either side of a fireplace. A broken candle on the mantel drips wax into the mouth of one of the sleeping men (right), much to the amusement of his neighbour on his right. In the doorway on the far-left, one of the men uses a ear-trumpet; one holds a tea cup in his hand, and a third yawns. Over the chimney-piece is a large clock-face, the hands indicating 10:56; above it is a carved owl and the words 'About your business'.

Abstract:: Three men sit by a supper-table, a grandfather-clock behind them points to XI. The man on the left is having his jack-boots pulled off by a small boy; the boy stands astride his right leg pulling hard, his back to the man, who is scowling and pushes his other booted foot against the boy's back; on the floor are a pair of spurs, a pair of slippers, and a boot-jack. A man (right) wearing a night-cap, but otherwise completely dressed and wearing spurred boots, leans one elbow on the table, his face contorted as if in pain, he holds his hand to his thigh. On the table beside him is a small packet inscribed "Diaculum". In the centre, and on the farther side of the table, the third man leans both elbows on the table, his hair is tousled and his eyes are shut. A servant behind, yawning, is carrying off a square box, probably a wig-box, while a maidservant stands on the right, a candle in one hand, a warming-pan in the other, watching with amusement the efforts of the boy to pull off the boot. Three hats hang on the wall; a bottle, a plate, three wine-glasses, and a guttering candle, burnt down to the socket, stand on the table. See related image in the British Museum catalogue

Abstract:: "Dr. Parr stands in a pulpit, preaching, immediately under the sounding-board which is against the upper edge of the design. In his left hand is a pipe from which rises a cloud of smoke inscribed 'Exit in Fumo'; in his right hand is a pipe-stopper. From his mouth descends a billowing cloud of smoke inscribed 'Ex Fumo non dare Lucem'. Below him are the heads of men asleep, or yawning, or disgusted. In the lower right corner a woman puts up an umbrella as protection from the smoke, a man angrily inspects his watch. From a gallery heads, with the lank hair of zealots, look down with angry dismay. In his left hand is a pipe from which rises a cloud of smoke inscribed 'Exit in Fumo'; in his right hand is a pipe-stopper. From his mouth descends a billowing cloud of smoke inscribed 'Ex Fumo non dare Lucem'. Below him are the heads of men asleep, or yawning, or disgusted. In the lower right corner a woman puts up an umbrella as protection from the smoke, a man angrily inspects his watch. From a gallery heads, with the lank hair of zealots, look down with angry dismay. On the wall above his head hangs a broken pair of bellows, emblem of his Borean blast. Burke, (right), very thin, seated on a three-legged stool, is mending the breeches which he has taken off. Behind his head is a spider in the centre of a cobweb. Between and behind them stands Fox, in the attitude of an orator, right arm raised, rehearsing a speech and regarding himself in a cracked mirror (right) which reflects his anxious and gloomy expression.
