Abstract:
"The King steps forward to embrace the Prince of Wales, who throws himself into his father's arms, saying, "against Heaven - and before thee, and am no more worthy------" (the words fade out). George III wears court dress, the Prince's dress is tattered and dishevelled, his pocket hangs inside out, the garter at his knee - 'Honi soit' - is loose. Behind the King stands the Queen on the door-step, half-smiling, her arms outstretched. Two pleased princesses look over her shoulder. Just outside the door stand Pitt and Moira watching the reconciliation, Pitt with a benign expression, Moira more doubtfully; both wear footmen's court-livery, of military cut; Moira wears jack-boots. Pitt holds a paper: 'New Union Act Britains best Hope', implying that he is the author of the 'Union'. Moira holds Pitt's arm. "A sequel to British Museum satire no. 10019. The King and Queen sit on chairs of state intently watching a rectangular tank in which Napoleon as Gulliver sails his little boat, manoeuvring the single sail. Behind the King's chair Lord Salisbury stands stiffly, holding his wand of office; the gold key is attached to his coat-pocket: he has the straight shapeless legs that Gillray always gives him. ... Two princesses sit beside the tank on the Queen's right; like the Queen, each holds up her fan. Two younger princesses stand behind. Two little pages (left) blow violently at the sail to propel the boat, while a third laughs. Two beefeaters (right) grin broadly. See British Museum catalogue., Text following title: Scene "Gulliver manoeuv'ring with his little-boat in the cistern," vide Swifts Gulliver. "I often used to Row for my own diversion, as well as that of the Queen & her Ladies, who thought themselves well entertained with my skill & agility. Sometimes I would put up my Sail and shew my art, by steering starboard & larboard, - However, my attempts produced nothing else besides a loud laughter, which all the respect due to his Majesty from those about him could not make them contain. - This made me reflect, how vain an attempt it is for a man to endeavour to do himself honour among those, who are out of all degree of equality or comparison with him!!! - See, Voyage to Brobdingnag., and Sheet trimmed within plate mark.

"Sheridan, a candle in each hand, shambles before the royal party, ushering them through the theatre and looking over his shoulder with an expression of exasperated anxiety. The King, in back view, turns to the Queen, saying, "I like the Author very much - took him for a Jacobin - no such thing - quite a different man - brim full of loyalty - I'll certainly come again!!" Behind the pair Salisbury, the Lord Chamberlain, walks stiffly, holding his staff and wearing his gold key. He is followed by one of the Princesses (Augusta Sophia), walking with the Prince of Orange, whose portly contour and sulky profile with closed eye appear on the extreme left. Through the door (probably that from the box lobby) Fox is seen holding a constable's staff and saying to the crowd, anxious to see the arrival: "Stand away there, don't stop up the passage you pack of Jacobin Rascals"."--British Museum online catalogue

"The King, Queen, and six Princesses, three quarter length, are seated round a frugal tea-table. The King, in profile to the right, faces his daughters, holding his cup and saucer to his lips, and saying, with a staring eye, "delicious! delicious". The Queen sits in the centre behind the small tea-pot, holding her cup and saucer in bony fingers, and looking with a wide and cunning smile towards the Princesses, saying, "O my dear Creatures, do but Taste it! You can't think how nice it is without Sugar: - and then consider how much Work you'll save the poor Blackeemoors by leaving off the use of it! - and above all, remember how much expence it will save your poor Papa! - O its charming cooling Drink!" The Princess Royal sits at the end of the row, on the extreme right, with four sisters diminishing in age on her right, a sixth just indicated behind the Queen. They hold, but do not drink, cups of tea, with expressions varying from sulky discontent to defiant surprise."--British Museum online catalogue
