"Sheridan leads the forces of the professionals against the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society, who are performing on a small, elegant stage, rising (without orchestra) from the boards in the foreground where these enemies advance. He is dressed as Harlequin; the tight chequered dress (slightly torn) accentuates his obesity; an empty purse hangs from his belt; in his left hand is a hat with a tricolour cockade (emblem of Jacobinism). In his right hand he flourishes a large pen whose feather makes wide swirling curves, terminating in firework-stars, and inscribed with the names of newspapers: 'Courier', 'Morning Post', 'Morning Herald', 'Morning Chronicle'. He is masked, to indicate that he has been writing anonymous squibs against the Pic Nics. The swirls of his pen partly obscure a figure of Comedy, meretricious, and half-naked, holding up a mask which decorates the left pilaster of the proscenium. The actors follow in characteristic attitudes. Kemble (as Hamlet) wearing a ribbon, ranting in tragedy, directly behind Sheridan, staggers back with legs astride, both arms raised. On the left is Mrs. Billington, singing as in BMSat 9765, left hand on her breast. Mrs. Siddons (? as Lady Macbeth) clutches a dagger. Behind is the head of Lewis (see BMSat 9915), with a comedian's smile, wearing a cocked hat. Crowds of actors pressing on from behind (left) and in deep shadow, are indicated by arms holding up banners; the chief one with the head of 'Shakespeare', badly torn. Others are 'Otway Rowe'; 'Kotzbue', and 'Schiller', both tricolour (indicating the supposedly revolutionary tendencies of modern German drama, cf. 'The Rovers' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', and BMSat 7054); 'Jonson', 'Congreve', 'Addison'. "A crowded scene, the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society are dressing and rehearsing. The design may derive from Hogarth's 'Actresses dressing in a Barn' (BMSat 2403), Gillray stressing the contrast between his luxurious mise-en-scène and the squalor of Hogarth's players. The centre figure is Lady Buckinghamshire, enormous, florid, and gorgeous, her skirts outspread, standing before a dressing-table, touching one of many patches on her face and holding her part, that of 'Roxana' [in Lee's tragedy, 'The Rival Queens; or the Death of Alexander the Great']. Under her dressing-table is a square bottle of 'Usquebaugh' and a glass. On Roxana's l., with her back to the dressing-table, sits Lady Salisbury, her legs crossed and much exposed, pulling on a laced boot. Her neck is swathed with a spotted cravat as in BMSat 9908. Near her on the floor are the second boot, a pair of breeches, and her part: 'the Part of Squire Groom to be per[formed], by [Lady Salisbu]ry'. She gazes at the huge Lord Cholmondeley who stands in profile to the left., dominating the left. of the design. He is dressed as Cupid; a tunic covered with a design of ring-doves, hearts, arrows, and cross a torches defines a vast paunch across which is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Amor Vincit Omnia'. He has butterfly wings, massive quiver filled with heavy arrows, and holds an arrow in his left hand. He stands impassively, his head wreathed with flowers. In the foreground, in front of Cholmondeley stands the tiny Lord Mount Edgcumbe in a swaggering attitude, studying his part: 'Alexander the Great', as in BMSat 9916. He wears armour, with a swathed cravat and vandyked ruff, and a helmet on which is a dragon spitting fire. Facing Cholmondeley and immediately behind Lady Salisbury is little Lord Derby blowing a French horn. Behind is a group of musicians: Lord Carlisle (l.) blows the bassoon with a melancholy expression, facing Lord Salisbury who pompously plays a small fiddle. Between them is Col. "A reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Fox to various groups of the Opposition, [With one or two exceptions the identifications are those of Miss Banks; the characterization is excellent, and most are unmistakeable.] in which the arrangement has political and social significance. Three Grenvilles bow to the host and hostess; the Marquis of Buckingham, wearing his ribbon, holding hat and gold-headed cane and showing a gouty leg and foot, bends low. Next is Lord Grenville, clasping his hat to his breast, more ingratiating but less obsequious than his brother. Next is the stout Lord Temple, awkwardly imitating his uncle's gesture. Fox, wearing a sword, returns Buckingham's bow, his hand on his heart; on his right. stands the fat Mrs. Fox, curtseying, and ogling Grenville. She holds a fan on which is a profile portrait of 'Napoleone Ist'; from her pocket projects a flask of 'French Brandy', indicative of her antecedents (cf. BMSats 7370, 10589) as well as her sympathies, cf. BMSat 9892). On the extreme right. is the Prince of Wales, in back view, the greater part of his figure cut off by the margin, but unmistakable. From his pocket projects a paper: 'Henry IV. Sc. I [sic] Pr of W -l know you all, & shall . . . while.' A short fat man gazes up at him admiringly, obsequiously amused; he is identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr [i.e. General] Fitzpatrick', but resembles M. A. Taylor. Beside him is a dog, his collar inscribed 'Tommy Tattle' [? Thomas Tyrwhitt]. Mrs. Fitzherbert sits, in semi-state, in the corner of a sofa, holding a fan on which are the Prince's feathers and 'Ich Dien'; she is about to take a ticket, 'Coalition Masquerade', proffered with ingratiating vivacity by Lord Carlisle. Next Carlisle behind the sofa stands the Duke of Clarence, facing the Prince, and cruelly caricatured. Mrs. Jordan takes his right. arm, but is reading Jobson & Nell [characters in 'The Devil to pay] with the Farce of Equality' [see BMSat 7908, &c.]. Behind the pair are Col. McMahon, sly and furtive, and a large man, resembling the Duke of York. [Identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr. Tyrwitt', but Tommy Tyrwhitt was noted for his small size. ] Behind Mrs. Fitzherbert, Erskine, in wig and gown, delightedly holds up a large paper (the words partly obscured): 'Arraignments for the new Broad-Bottom'd Administration [cf. "Gaetan Vestris (right) giving a dancing lesson to a gigantic goose with a human head and long pigtail queue. They face each other in profile. Vestris stands with his legs together, chest thrown out, his arms curved. "Regardez-moi" was his characteristic admonition. On a stool behind the goose is an open book inscribed "Electrical E. E. L."; on the ground at its feet is another inscribed "The Torpedo. Dedicated to Ld------C------. My Lord, I take the Liberty------ The greatness of whose Parts are known. . ." . This indicates that the goose is Lord Cholmondeley (1749-1827), "The Torpedo, a Poem to the Electrical Eel addressed to Mr John Hunter Surgeon" and "Dedicated to . . . Lord Cholmondeley," 4th ed. 1777, was a coarse and scurrilous poem, three lines of which are, "What tho' Lord Ch--lm--d--ly may conceal A most enormous length of Eel Admir'd for Size and bone:"In the wall which forms the background are two sash-windows and a door (left) round which a grinning youth, probably a servant, is looking. On the wall are half length portraits: three in ovals of elderly ladies in profile, one of a clergyman, full-face, wearing a biretta, his left hand on a book. There is also a picture of Fox, with a fox's head, seated opposite Cholmondeley; they are throwing dice. Fox appears satisfied, the other clenches his fist and exclaims in anger. A devil is climbing on the top of the frame and holds out a claw to grab the head of Fox. On the picture are the words "A Nick by God". A satire ridiculing the installation of Lord Grenville as the Chancellor of Oxford University on July 3rd, 1810. The installation followed a divisive election in which Lord Eldon opposed Lord Grenville on political and religious grounds. Opponents like Gillray saw Grenville's installation as a triumph for Catholic Emancipation. Here Grenville rises in balloon over a vast applauding crowd in Oxford. Many of the faces in the crowd are identifiable political figures: Buckingham, Stafford, M.A. Taylor, Erskine, Tierney, Holland, Grey, Sidmouth, Cholmondeley, Whitbread, Watkin Williams-Wynn, Fingall, Sheridan, etc.

"A drunken debauch in the new Union Club, see BMSat 9698. A long table, the cloth removed, one end cut off by the left margin, stretches almost across the design, slanting back slightly from the left, where it is in the foreground, and where Fox, grossly corpulent, sits in an armchair asleep, his feet on the table, a pipe in one hand. Nearly opposite his feet is the chair of state, on the table; on the empty seat is the Prince's cocked hat with triple plume, his motto 'Ich Di[en]' within the crown. The chair is backed by an elaborate architectural canopy with ornate pilasters on which swags of fruit and flowers are carved in relief: (left) grapes and lemons (materials for punch), and (right) roses and shamrocks. Above the seat are figures of Britannia and Erin, kissing, standing on a curved base inscribed 'The Union'. On the back of the chair are two clasped hands, elaborately irradiated. The chair is surrounded by broken wine-bottles; its former occupant, the Prince, lies on his back under the table, one arm flung over Lord Stanhope, who lies unconscious, clasping a bottle. On the Prince's stomach rest two feet in shoes with spiked, upcurved toes. In the foreground, opposite the Prince, Norfolk lies with his head against the seat of his overturned chair, looking very ill. All who are not incapacitated or fighting are toasting the Union (except Lansdowne and Parr, see below). On the table sits Moira, dressed as in BMSat 9386, a glass of wine held high above his head, his right leg thrust forward, while he stretches back to take the hand of Lord Clermont, [This is clear from the resemblance to BMSat 9575, and is supported by the shamrock which he and the other Irishmen wear. It is confirmed by 'London und Paris', vii. 80, where it is said that he and Moira were once bitter enemies. He is identified by Grego as General Manners, see BMSat 9288.] seated next Sheridan on the farther side of the table. Facing Clermont and in back view, Camelford sits erect, wearing a Jean de Bry coat (see BMSat 9425) and small round hat, with cropped hair. [The identification (that of Grego) is confirmed by BMSat 9716, Wright and Evans give Burdett, E. Hawkins 'Mr Manners'.] Beside him (right) two waiters bring in a full tub of Whiskey Punch, which they spill; one treads on the face of the prostrate Nicholls. Near the end of the table (right) sits Derby, his large head and crumpled features grotesquely caricatured. In the foreground on the extreme right Montagu Mathew (as in BMSat 9560) and Skeffington (as in BMSat 9557) advance dancing arm-in-arm, with tipsy grace, the former with a bottle in each hand; one reversed, the other, held above his head, splashes its contents over his partner's uplifted glass.
