"Satire on George II's reluctance to accept an inter-party ("Broad-Bottom") government which included Tories suspected of Jacobite sympathies. The king, in the centre. leans across a table crying out, "Hounsfoot me no Stomach him!" as Thomas Pelham, Duke of Newcastle, and his brother Henry prepare to cram the Tory John Hinde Cotton into his mouth; Newcastle remarks, "His Bottom's dam'd Broad". Six other former opposition members hoping for office, including Lords Cobham (saying "I'll Protest no more") and Lyttelton ("You are right Cuz"),and William Pitt ("We drive a fine Trade"), lie on a shelf ready to be treated in the same way as Cotton, one of them saying, "Burn the Yellow List." The kings breeches are lowered and he is evacuating Lord Hobart. Others who have presumably emerged in the same manner leave the scene to left complaining that they have been turned out of office. They include Sir John Rushout saying, "Rusht-out with a Fizzle", and, kneeling in the foreground, Lord Winchelsea who has dropped his spectacles, complaining, "Bes[hi]t without a Job". In the foreground to right, stand two other gentlemen address the oppositiion members, one saying "Consider Your Oaths", and the other, holding a large key, "Remember The Healths"."--British Museum online catalogue

He is led by a lion carrying a coronet in its teeth which says, "Follow me Sr. Blew String", and he holds his hand to his head, saying "I go in hopes to save this & trust to ye Hat". On the left, a group of four members of the Commons, wearing jockey caps and boots, surround Lord Pulteney. "Satire on disagreements within the Pragmatic Army in the aftermath of the battle of Dettingen suggesting that George II as nominal commander had bowed to Hanoverian interests, failing to drive home the victory. The king, having let the sash of "Poor E[n]g[lan]d" fall to the ground, and wearing the Hanoverian sash marked "16 thousand pounds" (suggesting the British subsidy) raises his arm and orders, "Noli Prosequi" in response to the dominant figure of the moustachioed Hanoverian general Baron Ilton who says, "I must preserve ye K[in]gs Troops"; an astonished young officer, to the right, exclaims, "What preserve & Conserve too". To the left of the king, the Earl of Stair, commander of the British troops, complains, "Would to God he had is Desert", the Duke of Arenberg, commander of Austrian troops, asks "Why don't you lead us on?", and another general says, "Damn such Confectioners". On the far left, John Carteret leans through the window of a coach the wheel of which carries a label reading, "I'm in a Cottage near ye field of Battle"; he says, "God be praised a great Victory" and a young black footman, sitting at the back of a coach wearing a slave collar, agrees, "Amen & they were the aggressors". On the right "The Tribe of Benjamin" (Hanoverian troops), labelled "4 Pounds a Man p[er] Month", lounge and eat beside a gun carriage on which is written, "A Considerable Share in the Victory"; one soldier wears an oak leaf in his hat in reference to the incident during the battle when George II is said to have sheltered under an oak after falling from his horse and to have presented an oak leaf to the soldiers who looked after him; a Hanoverian grenadier in the foreground, exclaims, "Plague of all cowards Say I!". "Satire on Robert Walpole at the time of his fall. Extended across a room is a large screen with twenty scenes described metaphorically in the text below. The scenes refer to instances of corruption and maladministration in his career: (1) three soldiers standing outside a prison referring to Walpole's alleged acceptance of a bribe in awarding two forage contracts for the army in Scotland when secretary of war in 1711 for which he was committed to the Tower; (2) a figure stretched across a screen indicating his "screening" of those involved in the South Sea Bubble; (3) a "Strumpet, called Corruption" with mitres and other symbols of office at her feet and Walpole at her side while "Pl[ace]m[e]n and Pensioners" gather around; (4) a snake-haired Fury drives men burdened with "Gin Act Dutys Taxes Debts"; (5) Walpole drives a chaise drawn by men instead of horses referring to the deeply unpopular Excise Scheme of 1733 and the Register Bill proposing the registration of seamen for defence purposes; (6) Walpole cutting in half a child representing the Sinking Fund; (7) Walpole embezzling public funds from chests in a strong room; (8) a hydra-headed Standing Army; (9) Walpole on his knees kissing the bare backside of Cardinal Fleury; (10) the "Mansion House" of the Constitution runs to ruin while (11) Walpole builds the splendid Houghton Hall for himself; (12) with the treaties of Hanover and Seville he inhibits the cause of Maria Theresa to the benefit of France and Spain; (13) "Spanish Depredeantions" of timber and cattle apparently in the Caribbean; (14) the export of "Wool to France"; (15) "Negotiations" with France and Spain in which Walpole frivolously blows bubbles, giving up all demands; (16) the Convention of the Pardo of 1738 which was condemned as making concessions to Spain; (17) the under-resourced War of Jenkins' Ear against Spain; (18) the "Spithead Expedition" of 1740 when the fleet was prevented from leaving port, allegedly by contrary orders rather than by unfavourable winds; (19) "His Flight", i.e. his resignation in February 1742, shown as a colossus cut in two and falling to earth while Walpole throws gold dust in the eyes of pursuers; (20) Walpole's "Trial", then in progress, before a committee of Parliament investigating aspects of his record in office shown here as resulting in his execution and the exposure of his severed head in the manner of a traitor. On either side of the screen large windows reveal a night sky in which, seen on the left, three men fly on a broomstick towards the moon; on the right, four others identify one of them as Walpole, one exclaiming "It must be the Comet", his neighbour, holding a telescope, "No! by Jove, tis Robin Goodfellow from R[i]chm[on]d", the third, "I wish the Telescope was a Gun". The Devil, smiling, peers from behind the screen muttering, "Hah! I shall have business here again." as he observes Walpole advising the king and his supporters, all wearing sashes. The ships at sea in the foreground of the earlier state have been replaced by the naked figure of Maria Theresa (then Queen of Hungary) sitting on a chair, one leg having been amputated and replaced by a wooden stump; a cloth around her hips is lettered, "Hungary & Lindtz". Her clothing has been pulled off by her enemies: Frederick the Great of Prussia pins down her cap, labelled "Silesia", with his halberd; the figure on the ground, previously identified as Theodore of Corsica holds her necklace labelled "Buta" [Buda]; the King of Spain holds a string by which he has pulled off her shift, labelled, "Just Rights"; the word "Doteingness" has been removed from Cardinal Fleury's walking frame and a string attached to his wrist has pulled off the Queen's petticoat, labelled "Austria/Netherlands" which she tries to hold on to; Walpole's paper is now lettered, "Place Bill", he now says "King LOGG listen to the Cardinal" a label at his feet reads, "If I get off now thanks to ye Priest Successor of Richlieu", and his string is now attached to the foot of the City of London alderman, whose label "Sturdy Beggar" has been removed; the Dutchman holds a string to which is attached the Queen's tippet labelled "Munich"(?) and he now says, "But We Design to be on our Guard & remain neuter"; the labels "Bohemia" and "Grand Duke" have been removed from two figures in the background; The figure formerly identified as Austria is now "Bohemia" and holds a string pulling the Queen's robe which is labelled "Prague", "Sultzback" and "Breslau". On the left James II, seated on a throne of "hereditary right" and holding manacles, turns left to shake the hand of a monk who tramples on an open volume labeled "Holy Bible". From under the throne dragons or serpents devour the "Magna Carta", "Toleration Act", "Common and Statute Law" and "Acts of Parliament" while slaves bow before the King and Furries with torches and whips dance before him. On an obelisk is inscribed: "The Foundation of the Roman Hierarchy; implicit faith; apostalical succession; infallibility; pardons and indulgences; decrees of council; massacres; private murders; perjury and the inquisition ..." A large folding screen in the centre stands open showing events from Walpole's career: the South Sea Bubble, the treaties of Hanover and Seville, the "Bank contract" of 1720, Admiral Hosier's expedition to Cartagena, the Excise Scheme (depicted as BM Satires 1918), the War of Jenkins' Ear, the Convention of the Pardo, the English ships held in the port of San Sebastian in 1740 (see BM Satires 2418 and 2440), and a general reference to "Bribery, &c.". A mirror on the left reveal that Walpole is standing behind the screen pulling strings that operate members of parliament assembled in the chamber shown below. Above the screen is a separate scene showing the reconciliation between George II and Frederick, Prince of Wales, early in 1742. To the right stands the Duke of Argyll in Garter robes resting against a lectern and pointing to Wapole's misdeeds as portrayed on the screen; above Argyll's head hangs a picture of Diogenes holding his lamp and a portrait of the "honest man" he sought; beside Argyll is lettered, "Glorious and Brave to shake Corruption's Seat, But much more Glorious is thy brave Retreat". Two columns of letterpress verse below warn "William", i.e. Pulteney, that Walpole continues to influence governement."
