Abstract:: "Blücher stands on the shore, directed to the left, holding out at arm's length, and by the scruff of the neck, an animal (as much like a fox as a dog) with the head of Napoleon. The Emperor, in profile to the left, wears his petit chapeau, and gauntlet gloves, so that he has human hands. In a heap at Blücher's feet lie Napoleon's discarded uniform, crown, sceptre, sword, and an eagle. Along the shore runs an officer shouting in terror, his arms raised above his head. Near him a small boat with sail and oars lies at the edge of the water; a man climbs in with a sack on his shoulder inscribed '20.000 a year'. On the horizon is a small island, 'Island of Elba', above which fly carrion birds. On the right in the middle distance is another scene; a closely packed group of royalists and allied soldiers, in front of which stands Louis XVIII, with clasped hands, while a man places a crown on his head; Talleyrand, wearing a long gown, and with a surgical shoe on his right foot, obsequiously proffers a paper: 'A List of Ministers for your Majesty's Approbation'. Behind Talleyrand is a bishop with a crosier, and wearing a mitre which suggests a papal tiara. A woman holding up a laurel-wreath stands on the right. Behind these figures appear the heads of mounted soldiers and hands waving hats. The whole group is dominated by large white flags, the most prominent covered with fleur-de-lis and inscribed 'Restoration of Louis XVIII'. Abstract:: "Scene in an English court of law. The judge, Blücher, wearing a legal wig with regimentals, stands up with left arm extended, addressing Napoleon, who crouches in the dock (right), handkerchief in hand, pleading for mercy. Beside the judge are the sovereigns of Europe, two on his right, three on his left, all gazing at the prisoner. In the well of the court aged and grotesque counsel, typical of Rowlandson's lawyers, surround the green-covered table. The jury (left) have stupid, morose, or astonished expressions. The usher, with a long rod, seated on a raised chair, faces the jury on the opposite side of the court. Corpulent constables with staves stand beside and in front of the dock. Freely sketched spectators look down from a crowded gallery above the dock. Almost all eyes are on the prisoner, behind whom stand the Devil, with folded arms, fiercely gloating over his victim. Behind the usher is a high white screen on which Napoleon's offences are inscribed: 'NAPOLEAN BONAPARTE The first and last by the Wrath of Heaven Ex Emperor of the Jacobins & head Runner of Runaways [see British Museum Satires No. 12192], Stands indicted 1ts [sic] for the Murder of Captain Wright in the Temple at Paris 2d for the murder of the Duke Dangulem [d'Enghien] Pichegrew & Georges 3 for the Murder of Palm Hoffer &c & 4th for the murder of the 12 inhabitants of Moscow 5th for inumerable Robberies committed on all Nations in Christendom & elsewhere, 6th for Bigamy & lastly for returning from Transportation, and setting the World in an uproar.' Blücher says fiercely: "You Nap Boneparte being found Guilty of all these Crimes it is fell to my lot to pronounce Sentence of Death on You--You are to be hung by the Neck for one hour till you are Dead, Dead, Dead, & your Body to be chained to a Mill Stone & sunk in the Sea at Torbay." Napoleon says: "Oh cruel Blucher, Oh! cruel Wellington it is you that have brought me to this End. Oh Magnanimous Emperors Kings & Princes intercede for me and spare my life; and give me time to attone for all my Sins, My Son Napoleon the Second will reward you for Mercy shewn me." The sovereigns are poorly characterized. On the extreme left is Alexander, next him and on Blücher's right is the Prince Regent. On Blücher's left is Louis XVIII. Next (?) the King of Prussia, then the Emperor of Austria; next, the Pope with clasped hands, wearing his tiara. On the extreme right is (?) Abstract:: "Napoleon is being drummed out of France. His right wrist is tied to the left wrist of Joseph Bonaparte; they are led forward, abjectly crouching, by Blücher, who holds the rope attached to the noose round Napoleon's neck. Napoleon has long ass's ears and wears a fool's cap inscribed 'Transported for Life'; his brother's cocked hat is inscribed 'Coward and Thief'. Both are assailed by serpentine monsters, barbed and scaly, which bite their legs, one inscribed 'Execration', the other 'Detestation'. Both wear uniform with the coats without epaulets and cut off at the waist. Blücher carries against his shoulder a long pole on which is a placard: 'Napolean, Late Emperor of the French, King of Italy Protecter of the Confederation of the Rhine, Grand Arbiter of the fate of Nations &c &c &c but now by the permission of the Allied Sovereigns, Exile in the Isle of Elba an Outcast from Society a fugitive a Vagabond. Yet this is the conceited Mortal who said, I have never been seduced by prosperity Adversity will not be able to overcome me--' Behind (left) the sovereigns of Europe gleefully dance in a ring, holding hands, round two flag-staffs from which float two large flags, the Bourbon flag dotted with fleur-de-lis and inscribed 'Rejoice O ye Kings Vive le Roi'; on the other is a flag with the double-headed eagle of Austria or Russia. The monarchs wear crowns; with them is the Pope, wearing his tiara. Next him is the corpulent Louis XVIII, one arm round the Pope's shoulder. Of the others only William of Holland can be identified with certainty; he wears bulky Dutch breeches with an ermine cloak. There are five others, three must be the Tsar, Emperor of Austria, King of Prussia. The others are probably Ferdinand of Spain and Ferdinand of Sicily. They sing: 'Now we are met a Jolly set in spite of Wind or Weather'. Abstract:: "Louis XVIII, grotesquely obese (left), and the Tsar kiss, their lips touching. Louis, whose head is much the larger, grasps the back of Alexander's head; the Tsar bends from the waist to reach beyond the King's paunch. Louis, with the gouty legs and old-fashioned gold-embroidered coat and waistcoat of English caricature, wears the order of the Saint Esprit. The Tsar, in uniform, has the high pinched waist and bulging breast of the dandy (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13029) with enormous cavalry boots to the thigh, huge epaulets, and a sash, but no sword. He says: "My Dear Legitimate Brother (tho I believe I call Boney the same) I am happy to serve you tho your cursed Country Men almost destroyed my country--" Louis answers: "Ma Chere [sic] Ami, I am so rejoiced at your Brotherly Kindness in putting off our payment & takeing off your Troops that I could Devour you." The embrace is watched by two Frenchmen on the left, and on the right by the King of Prussia, the Emperor of Austria, and a young man (? Napoleon's son). Frederick William wears dandified uniform like that of the Tsar but with long trousers; he supports a large sword hanging from a belt, and holds a huge cocked hat; he watches the embrace with distaste, saying, "I am obliged to follow the Leaders at Present." Francis I says: "I must agree for the moment but I have a Grandson." One Frenchman wears uniform with top-boots; he says: "De Legitimate francais be too much for John Bull de manoeuvre by Gar ve want de Time & we show dem vat ve intend." His companion, an elderly man wearing a court suit with a powdered wig (Richelieu attended the Conference on behalf of France) says delightedly: "Ah-ha he do him vid Compliments & den we do them out of the Money." Abstract:: "Louis XVIII sits squarely in an arm-chair, head turned slightly to the right, with a satisfied and truculent smile. In his left hand he holds a wine-glass in which kneels a tiny screaming Napoleon, submerged to the waist, with both arms raised above his head. His left foot rests regally upon a cushion, but the slashed shoe indicates that this is on account of gout. He wears dress of ancien régime type, with the ribbon and star of St. Louis. Abstract:: "John Bull sits in a double pair of stocks, his ankles heavily shackled. His wrists are linked by a huge padlock inscribed Million £800 000 000 [National Debt]. He sits on bales of Taxes; to his back is tied a huge bundle of Last Wars Taxes. His clothes are tattered; three pockets hang inside out, inscribed To Let. At his side (left), and in profile to the right, kneels a noble Spaniard, in very theatrical dress, with trunk hose, cloak, and ruff. He has a spear from which hangs a pennant inscribed Libertas. He puts his hands together in a gesture of prayer: I come once again, and on my kneens [sic] to implore your Aid, we are indeed grateful for former Services, and beleive that you fought purely for Spain and not for yourselves--Save us from our pretended Friends they are worse then Enemies--Save us, and the World, from the destruction of Liberty--. John bites his thumbs despairingly; he answers: I pity you, but I can only give you advice, when you came to me before, I was a Strong Man, and free, but I am now exhausted in saving you, and destroying your great Enemy--See how I am fetter'd--! My Creditors enchain me--! look at my Debt and pity me!-- At his feet a heavy pair of leg-irons lies across many papers inscribed Debt and Taxes. He sits under an oak-tree; from a partly-withered bough hang his cartouche-box and bayonet-belt. In the middle distance (right) Louis XVIII sits astride a cannon (cf. British Museum Satires No. 12797), on a gun-carriage drawn rapidly up a slope by the Tsar and the Emperor of Austria. Both wear uniform and crowns, that of the latter topped by a fool's cap. Both cry: War! War!! War! and blood!! Alexander holds a sword in one hand, a bayoneted musket in the other; Francis holds a sword and a pistol, against his shoulder is the shaft of a flag inscribed Holy Alliance. Louis XVIII leans back, flannelled legs extended, two pistols in his belt, a sword in one hand, a musket in the other. Before him on the cannon is a bowl of soup, &c. The Pope walks at his right, holding a string attached to his nose. The King: By the Powers I shall fall, and lose my Balance Stop!! Stop! I say don't pull so hard you'll rupture [your scored through] Eu rope, this is not suited to my Taste [scored through] Gout I am already crippled and cannot bear it Stop!!!-- The Pope, who wears his tiara and holds his crosier against his shoulder, answers: Fear not, I'll let you into Heaven, through the back door my dear Son. Keys hang from his neck. Behind the cannon runs the Devil pushing at the King's posterior with a trident; he says: They cannot go on without me so I bring up the rear!! Beside the cannon run tiny frogs in uniform with muskets, &c. A slightly bigger one holding a sword may represent Angoulême. Abstract:: "In a wheeled car, Louis XVIII careers down a wooden track (as on the Montagnes Russes in Paris), laid on a steep grass slope, towards a monster formed of a guillotine, from which diabolical talons extend, ready to clutch him. The car is partly throne, partly bath-chair; the King has the usual swollen flannelled legs and wears an old-fashioned court-suit. He is blindfolded by a fool's cap with a long peak which streams behind him, showing the rapidity of the descent. In his right hand he holds out a spluttering firebrand, or Holy Candle, in the left is a sword with a serrated blade inscribed Sword of Justice, to which heavy fetters are attached. On the right of the track is a wide doorway, inscribed Chamber of Deputies, whence soldiers with fixed bayonets are pouring out. The two foremost drag between them a deputy, Manuel. The King turns his head to the right, shouting: War! War! war! war with Spain is indispensable. We will carry our measures at home & abroad with the point of the Bayonet, The Bourbons must be absolute monarchs, the people must be slaves!! His car is pushed behind by a band of simian Frenchmen, having the legs of apes, in court-dress with orders, wearing fool's caps like that of the King, the two foremost having their faces completely covered with the caps. The first pair, evidently Villèle and Chateaubriand, shout War! war! war! and War! war! Vive l' Roi. Those behind shout Shove away Shattebrain [cf. BM Satires 12614]; this is a Glorious cause. Vive l' Roi. Manuel, dignified and determined, makes a speech: "Let others seek to debase the National character: they have no doubt a guilty interest in doing so: I will do every thing in my power to preserve it's virtue. I do not expect an act of Justice; it is to one of Vengence [sic] that I resign myself. Sent to this Chamber by the will of those who had the right to send me here, I shall only leave it through the Violence of those who have not the right to exclude me; and if this resolution on my part may draw on my head the gravest dangers, I console myself that the field of Liberty has sometimes been fertilized by generous blood." Soldiers (right) watch the ejection, their hands resting on the barrels of their muskets, the butt ends being on the ground. They differ from the ejectors in wearing bearskins in place of cocked hats, gaiters in place of jack-boots, and they have a flag inscribed National Guard. One (Mercier) says: We will not Obey the Order to expel M. Manuel. Comrades, what say you to the Right about? In the foreground (left) two ghosts emerge from clouds, looking up at the madly careering king. Napoleon, a profile bust portrait, says: Silly Bourbon! Remember the Consequences of my interfereing with Spai. Louis XVI, his neck hidden by cloud, holds out his decollated head; he wears a shirt patterned with fleur-de-lis. He says: O! Brother, Brother, be warned by my unhappy fate!! The guillotine-monster is topped by a cap of Liberty with two tricolour cockades for glaring saucer-eyes. The base of the cap forms a gaping mouth; from it issue the words: What are you at!! what are you a'rter!!! I am really surprised at your Blind Stupidity! My appearance Here, I assure you, is with the most friendly intentions, to warn you of your impending danger. But if you are bent upon your own destruction, why come along!! Abstract:: "The base of the design is a dunghill from which rises the head of Napoleon as a young republican officer, not caricatured. His head is covered by a large cup-shaped fungus, decorated with a tricolour cockade and resembling a Cap of Liberty; from its apex ascends a curving stalk, terminating in the large yellow rosette of a sunflower, centred by the head of Napoleon as Emperor, larger than that of the base, and representing an older man; like the lower one it is directed slightly to the right. Below it, leaves project from the stalk, balancing the design. On Napoleon's head is an arrangement of stamens in the form of an imperial crown. These unite to form the long scraggy neck of the third Napoleon, a head in profile to the right, emaciated and desperate. On this head is a larger fungus than that below, projecting like an enormous hat. From it ascend the stems of a bunch of violets, copied from No. 12511, but with the addition of more flowers, and on a larger scale. It contains the profiles of Napoleon, Marie Louise, and the King of Rome, arranged exactly as in British Museum Satires No. 12511. Smaller fungi sprout from the dunghill, some flat and some conical, like caps of Liberty; on the latter tricolour cockades are indicated. Four little figures are on a slope (left) leading towards the dunghill, prepared to clear it away. In front are Blücher and Wellington, running forward, and talking to each other; one holds a spade, the other a broad hoe. Behind them is the Tsar, shouldering a pickaxe. Behind again stands Louis XVIII, with splayed gouty legs, supported on a crutch. He waves his hat to cheer them on."--British Museum online catalogue

The dialogue between K-g Naughty & his Brothers Consors [sic], or, The caracature of all

Abstract:: "An intricate design with small inset scenes, the background being walls of a room covered with free copies of caricatures against George IV, chiefly relating to the Queen. On the extreme left is an open door, showing Napoleon as a tiny colossus on the summit of St. Helena (see British Museum Satires No. 12611, &c.), a steep rock. In the centre George IV, his forehead inscribed '0', stands in deep dejection, looking down; he has ass's ears, and from his fob, in place of seals, hang bottle, corkscrew (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13299), pie, &c. Loops of rope hang from his pockets. He stands on thorn-branches, as do his Ministers and brother-sovereigns, orientals excepted. No. '1' (a small scene in the background). Six Ministers dance round Britannia who is chained to the ground: Castlereagh, Sidmouth, Liverpool, Bathurst, Melville, and Wellington (names from initials); they say: "We have put him in a pretty Situation." Answer: "Laugh & Rejoice I have New Years Gifts for you in my Pockets." (He threatens them with dismissal for their failure to obtain his divorce.)The next are '2, K--g of Pru--a', a very tall officer wearing a mortar-board cap (see British Museum Satires No. 12283) who points derisively at George IV, saying: "Stupid Ass he is right enough to be ashamed of himself"; '3. Em--r of R--a', adapted from British Museum Satires No. 13010, and laughing as in that plate, but wearing a barber's bowl (Mambrino's helmet) inscribed 'New Don' [Quixote]; he says: "It is enough to set one mad"; '4. Em--r of A--a', thin and shrivelled, with his grandson, '18, Napoleon 2', a tiny figure in his pocket who says: "I wish I could move this bowl"; Francis says: "What a face." George IV's answer to the three sovereigns is "Go to School before you laugh at me Small Heads upon Tall Bodies had it not been for me you would have been on the Parish, a long time ago [an allusion to British subsidies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 12875]. Come Come you are as black as myself or our Infernal Brother." He answers 'Napoleon 2': "Be comforted, in a little time you will roll it." '5' and '6', seated together cross-legged in the foreground, are 'Great T--k' and 'Em--r of P--a', who say "Turn Turk then since thy wife no longer pleases thee" and "Prends garde qu'on ne te mette en perce." The King answers them: "For a long time I have had a great mind to do it" and "That is what I Dread." Nos. '7' to '12' are sovereigns standing in a row behind '2' and' 3'. '7 The K--g of S--n' says: "For this long year I pity but cannot help laughing in seeing you"; answer: "We shall see who will laugh the last" (Ferdinand VII since early in 1820 was in the power of revolutionaries); '6. K--g of Na--s', his head a block of 'Naples Soap', says: "My brother in misfortune speeks [sic] the truth." (There was revolution in the Two Sicilies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14132.) Answer: "Nay all the little Dogs will Bark look at this Cake ['cake' (slang) = fool, gull, or blockhead, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10750] of Naples soap you would do better to eat your Macaroni and come and Drink with me to comfort us." '9. K--g of B--a', "It would have been better to have said nothing"; answer: "I confess it would have been better." '10. K--g of W--g'. "Clamour in such cases is wore [sic] than silence"; answer: "Experience has taught it me." '11. K--g of S--x--y.' "I in your case would have taken my wife and lived politically with her"; answer: "It would have been the most advisable Plan." '12. K--g of N--ds.' "Gratitude compels me to pity you" [see British Museum Satires No. 12102, &c.]; answer: "Think rather to preserve the Administration of thy Cheeses" [a remark borne out by the Belgian revolution of 1830]. Even bulkier than George IV is '14. L--s. tout de Suite [XVIII]', who sits on thorns, and has cloven hooves for feet and hands, animal's ears, and a small black cap or tonsure; from his shoulders hangs a long rosary with a dangling cross. Looking up at George IV with a cynical smile he says: "Poor fool"; answer: "At last comes the Kick of the Ass, But I have a Dish ready forhim." Behind Louis is '13. Em--r of Ch--na', saying: "You look a thousand times more like a Chinese than myself in your B--s pavillion"; answer: "Thou art the only one I could not deceive." Standing in the doorway are three well-dressed young men who are 'People', they are 15-17, and look at the King with smiling contempt; the third points to Napoleon. '15.' "You are the laughing stock of your faithful brothers who are no better than yourself"; answer: "It is true when too late I have open'd my eyes, but look at my pockets and you will find Ropes for my M--n--st--rs and my Brothers." '16' "We have found you out at length in spite of your mask do us justice or we shall give you your deserts Whitehall is not gone and there is room for you all" [an allusion to Charles I's fate, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13269]; answer: "Do it yourselves, it will be the shortest way." '17.' "Boney Boney you alone deserve our tears your fall has been as fatal to them as to ourselves your return would save us all." Answer: "He is a Man I must allow it." (For 18 see under 4.) '19' is "Green Bag [see British Museum Satires No. 13735], inscribed Milan Commission [see British Museum Satires No. 13755]; it says: / am cruelly thrown aside and fallen into very bad hands" [see British Museum Satires No. 13986]; answer: "However all my hopes are in the [sic]." Prints (uncoloured), or ad hoc designs, completely cover the walls; only a few can be identified. The lunette under the domed ceiling contains apotheoses of Queen Caroline; these are flanked by designs, both on the vaulted ceiling, depicting the joy of John Bull (left) and Britannia (right) on her return to England, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13743. Below, on the three walls, are thirty-one prints copied or adapted regardless of the size of the originals. The two largest, in the upper left corner, are from British Museum Satires No. 13843 (simplified and perhaps combined with British Museum Satires No. 13764) and British Museum Satires No. 13786. Others are British Museum Satires No. 13210, reversed and simplified; British Museum Satires No. 13998, reversed and altered, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires No. 13830, simplified, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires Nos. 13851, 13901, 14012; the King from British Museum Satires No. 13848 (throwing mud, the Queen not depicted, the right of the plate hidden by George IV). British Museum Satires No. 13508, a small woodcut, appears as a full-sized print; British Museum Satires No. 14029 is simplified and the domes of the Pavilion are introduced. The origins of twenty others have not been traced. On the floor behind Louis XVIII (left) are partly rolled caricatures, and on the right is a print (coloured) of Castlereagh standing behind a huge pie from which he carves portions for four supplicants, evidently the King of Prussia, the Tsar, the Emperor of Austria, and (?) Bernadotte (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13619). As a pendant to this is a battle scene: the statue of Napoleon presides over an empty throne; beside it stands a woman who offers crown and sceptre to a little boy (his son) who runs to take it, holding the hand of a Grenadier, beside whom is another soldier (cf.
