"A travesty of a French print, an apotheosis of Napoleon by Tardieu after Dabos. As in the original, the title is on a piece of fringed drapery between two naturalistic eagles; these flank an arc of the globe, its northern summit, more flattened than in the original. On the globe is a map, with 'France' in the centre, flanked (left) by 'Golfe of Venice' and 'Italy' and (right) 'Espagne' and 'Pologne'. On the north are 'Amsterdam Pres Unie' [sic] and 'Whestphalia'. From the summit of the globe rises a pole supporting the face of Napoleon, copied from the original but with the addition of a melancholy frown and transformed by the pole into a decollated head. It is inscribed 'Polar Star' and enclosed in a circle of writhing serpents which takes the place of a laurel wreath. Rays extend from the circle over the greater part of the design, with inscriptions radiating outwards: 'Assisting in the Assassination of Louis the 16th my Benefactor'; 'Murdering the Citizens of Paris under Roberspierre' [cf. The design is surmounted by the head of the Devil wearing a spiky crown inscribed 'Damnation', between two oval shields: on one a heart, 'Heart of a Tyrant', on the other a 'Vulture'. These emblems replace a crown between two shields, one with the Napoleonic eagle, the other with the Habsburg eagle. From this centre-piece flames and smoke (replacing olive branches) stream left and right, with a scourge and a barbed trident. The lower corners are decorated with trophies slanting outwards from the eagles: spears, eagles, axes, &c., one spear supporting a placard: 'Flags manufactured for the Empress'. [1] In the upper left corner Burdett sits, directed to the right, intently reading the 'Extraordinary Gazette' on 'Nelson's Victory'; his shock of hair covers his eyes, and he says, left hand raised in alarm: "sure I cannot see clear?" On the wall (left) is a print, a profile head of 'Buonaparte'. [2] Jekyll stands beside Lansdowne, who reclines in an arm-chair in dressing-gown and bonnet-rouge, a gouty leg resting on a cushion. "Napoleon, in frenzied passion (cf. BMSat 9998), has risen from his chair at a round breakfast table, overturning it. He has seized the massive urn and is about to bang it on the head of Talleyrand whom he holds by the ear, while kicking him behind. Talleyrand, terrified, drops two papers: 'Defaite de I'Armée Francois en Calabria' and 'la Prise de Buenos-Ayres'. His bag-wig flies off. He wears gown, bands, and rosary over his suit, and has the usual heightened shoe, which indicates his lameness. Napoleon says with savage ferocity: ""Out on ye Owl! - noting but song of Death?" ['Richard III', IV. iv]. The breakfast combines informality with pomp. Napoleon wears a cap and a dressing-gown over his military tunic with slippers and ungartered stockings. His upright chair is close to Josephine's armchair. The small table was covered with (gold) tea and coffee things, a dish of fruit, a dish of boiled eggs, a bottle of wine and one glass, bread and a bread knife; all these slide to the ground, with a newspaper, 'The Moniteur', on which headings are legible: 'Projet pour Subjuger le Monde [cf. BMSats 10558, 10762,10997] - Great Britain - Russia Swed[en] - Turkey - Persia - Chim . . - Cariby [sic] . . .' Boiling water from the urn cascades into Josephine's lap; its lid is an imperial crown which flies off, its body a terrestrial globe. Josephine, much bejewelled, and wearing a crown which falls off, is in déshabillé; she throws up her arms in terror; her tea-cup falls. On the r. are ranks of diplomats or messengers, proffering papers: Holland, a clumsy Dutch burgher, kneeling, holds out 'Holland Starving! - & ripe for a Revolt'. An Austrian officer, also kneeling, holds out 'All Germany Rising, & Arming en Masse'. An erect Swedish officer holds out 'Swedish Defiance - Charles ye XII Redivivus'. An abjectly kneeling Spaniard holds 'Spain in Despair for the loss of her Colonies'. "The stage, flanked by the stage-boxes, extends across the design, the base of which is the orchestra, where the new Ministry perform. George III has stepped on to the stage from the royal box (l.) and confronts Napoleon, who stands arrogantly upon clouds and points to an enormous scroll held up by Talleyrand. This stretches across the cloud to rest on the stage. The Emperor, in uniform, with spurred jackboots and wearing a large, feathered bicorne, holds a sword in his right. hand and says fiercely: "There's my Term's." The King, who wears uniform with a small cocked hat and buckled shoes, holds his sword against his shoulder. He inspects the scroll through his glass, saying: " - Very amusing Terms indeed! - and might do vastly well with some of the new-made little Gingerbread kings [see BMSat 10518] - but WE are not in the habits of giving up either "Ships, or Commerce, or Colonies", merely because little Boney is in a pet to have them!!!" The scroll is inscribed: 'TERMS OF PEACE - Acknowledge me as Emperor - "mantle your Fleet, - Reduce your Army - Abandon Malta & Gibraltar, - Renounce all Continental Connection - Your Colonies I will take at a Valuation, - Engage to pay to the Great-Nation for 7 Years annually £1.000.000. and Pace in my Hands as Hostages the Princess Charlotte of Wales, with Ten of ye late Administration whom I shall name.' Talleyrand kneels on one knee, displaying a deformed l. leg, on a cornupia which rests on the clouds that support Napoleon. He wears a long gown with a rosary (denoting the ex-Bishop of Autun); a pen is behind his ear. From the cornucopia papers, money-bags, and coin pour down on to the stage. The papers are: 'Address to the Papists'; 'Loan to the - ['Prince' implied, cf. BMSat 6945]; 'To the United Irishmen'; 'To the London Corresponding Society'; 'The Press'; 'The Argus'; 'For the Whig Club'; 'To the Army; 'To the Navy', 'To [the] Volunteers'. "Canning, as Phaeton, drives his chariot with four horses abreast on a curving track across the heavens, slanting upwards across the design from left. to r. On this are signs of the zodiac; other constellations of the zodiac are on the darkened sky, above and below the path of Phaeton; all assail him. The base of the design is part of the northern hemisphere, showing the world in flames, and flanked by the ghosts of Pitt and Fox. In the lower left. corner is the ghost of Pitt as Apollo (half length); he weeps, dropping his lyre, and raises his shroud to gaze up at his son, Phaeton. He is surrounded by heavy clouds. In the opposite corner, the head and shoulders of Fox as 'Pluto', holding a pitchfork, emerge from flames: he looks up with sinister anxiety at the conflict in the heavens. Canning's head is the centre of an irradiated sun: 'The Sun of Anti-Jacobinism.' He is heroic, youthful, and naked, except for floating draperies. Above him (l.) is a crescent moon. His horses have human heads set behind equine jaws and nostrils which jet flame. They are (l. to r.): Hawkesbury, Perceval, Castlereagh (with a profile expressive of nobility), Eldon (sub-human). "Britannia, terrified, faint, and dishevelled sits on the ground supported by Addington and Hawkesbury, and defended by Sheridan, a Silenus-like and ragged Harlequin. They are on the coast towards which are advancing many rowing-boats filled with little French soldiers. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the foremost boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body, to show that he is Nobody, as in BMSat 5570, &c. The distant French coast (right) is covered with troops marching towards the shore. Clouds of smoke rise from the beach, which is concealed by the foreground. Britannia, wearing Roman dress with cothurnes, raises her arms, and shrieks (parodying Hamlet): "Doctors & Ministers of dis grace defend me!" The 'dis' is scored through but conspicuously legible. Addington holds a bottle of Gunpowder to her nose, and looks in alarm at the approaching army. He says: "Do not be alarm'd my dear lady! the Buggabo's (the Honest Gentlemen, I mean,) are avowedly directed to Colonial service, - they can have nothing to do Here - my Lady! - nothing to do with Us! - do take a Sniff or two, to raise your Spirits, and try to stand, if it is only upon One Leg!" Hawkesbury looks down with deep melancholy, supporting her (cracked) shield, and holding her (damaged) spear. He says: "Yes my Lady, you must try to Stand up, or we shall never be able to "March to Paris"". Sheridan holds Harlequin's wooden sword of 'Dramatic-Loyalty' in his right hand (cf. BMSat 9916). On his left arm is a shield with Medusa's head, the snaky locks inscribed: 'Abuse', 'Bouncing', 'Puffing', 'Detraction', 'Stolen Jests', 'Malevolence', 'Stale Wit', 'Envy'. He wears a hat turned up in front with a tricolour cockade; its crown is a fool's cap with two ears and a bell. Round his paunch is a tricolour sash through which is thrust a paper: 'Ways and Means to get a Living'. He shouts in defiance at the distant army: "Let 'em come! - dam'me!!! - where are the French Buggabo's? - single handed I'd beat forty of 'em!!! dam'me, I'd pay 'em like Renter Shares, sconce off their half Crowns!!! - mulct them out of their Benefits, & come ye Drury Lane Slang over 'em!" Behind, between Addington and Sheridan, is the head of Fox, holding his hat before his eyes; he says: "Dear me - what can be the reason of the Old Lady being awak'd in such a Fright? - I declare I can't see any thing of the Buggabo's!" "In a goblet-shaped glass vessel on the top of a cylindrical 'German Stove' a little Napoleon is being heated to dissolution point. Two retorts are connected with this vessel inscribed 'Intrigue and Villainy' and 'Ambition and Folly'; four others issue symmetrically from the stove: 'Gasconade and Lies', 'Fire and Sword', 'Arrogance and Atrocity', 'Murder and Plunder'. In the front of the stove is an opening for the fire; this is being stoked by John Bull (left), a fat 'cit' who leans forward, supporting 'Iohn Bulls Coal Tub', and holding out a lump of coal in a pair of tongs. His vis-à-vis is a fat Dutchman (right) who crouches on his knees plying a pair of 'Dutch Bellows'. He wears a cap and is smoking a pipe; beside him is a pot marked 'Gall'. Behind John stand five sovereigns or personifications of their countries: the King of Würtemberg, grotesquely obese, gazes up, pointing a finger as if giving directions; he holds an open book: 'Publishd Wirtemburgh'. Bernadotte, wearing several orders, triumphantly empties into the steaming vessel a bottle labelled 'Sulphat of Swedish Iron'. Behind him are the hussar who stands in these prints for Prussia or Frederick William III, and (?) Francis I. Between Bernadotte and the glass is an older face, perhaps the King of Saxony. All look up exultingly at the tortured Napoleon. Facing this group stands a German officer (right) stretching up to hold a lid which he is about to clap down on the vessel, though this reaches only to below the victim's waist. Napoleon, in profile to the left, puts one hand to his head with a despairing gesture, and flings out his left arm as if to ward off the extinguishing lid; he exclaims: "Oh Spare me till the King of Rome / Is ripe for mischief yet to come." On the extreme right a Spanish don pounds with a pestle in a large mortar inscribed 'Saragossa'. On the left are four men seated close together at a round table where one of them, a large Cossack, is mixing chemicals. He is directed to the left and holds a book while he mixes the contents of a small pot; a pair of scales lies on the table on which are also jars and an hour-glass. The other three watch intently; next him is a man wearing a fur cap inscribed 'Polar Star' (? Sweden or Poland) who also appears in British Museum Satires No. 12117. His neighbour resembles the Emperor of Austria, but he and the man on the extreme left may be the King of Bavaria and the Duke of Baden, princes of the Confederation of the Rhine. On the ground near the table three books are propped up. The largest is open; on the left page but scored through are the words 'Napoleon Protecter of the Rhenish Confederacy'; on the right page: 'Francis Emperor of Germany restored 1813'. The others are 'Liberty of Germany' and 'The Downfall of Boney'. Behind the Cossack, but directed to the right and watching Napoleon, stands the Pope, wearing his tiara and holding a bottle in each hand containing 'Fulminating Powder' and 'Vial of Wrath'. "A pair of breeches, formerly belonging to Fox, much inflated and forming two merging and transparent globes with projecting legs, is poised (at the seat) on three ostrich feathers, erect in a round bed of (ministerial) roses (see BMSat 10558, &c). Within these globes members of the Ministry sit at a round table, devouring loaves and fishes. The nearest ones are in back view, and have the heavy posteriors characteristic of the Grenvilles (cf. BMSat 10530). Lord Grenville, a fish in each hand, with Lord Ellenborough on his right, Buckingham on his left., and, next the latter, Lord Temple. They sit on a cushioned bench like those of Parliament, which follows the curve of the breeches. The others, left to right from Temple, are Spencer, Windham, Erskine, Petty, Lord Holland, [Identified by his own note.] Moira, who sits full face opposite Grenville, Lauderdale, Sheridan, Howick; Sidmouth on Ellenborough's right completes the circle. All are gormandizing on fish in different degrees, except Spencer and Holland who eat normally. Before Grenville is a dish containing two large fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer', see BMSat 10543, &c. A dog, its collar inscribed 'Tierney', puts its forefeet on the bench, yapping at Grenville's back (cf. BMSats 10128, &c., 10603). On the ground beside him are three cats eating fish in a dish inscribed 'Tabbeys'; their collars are inscribed 'Bet Fox', 'Fitz', and 'Jordan'. Rats surround a dish inscribed 'Scribblers' [ministerial journalists and pamphleteers]. "The scene is the throne-room in the Tuileries, indicated by a part of the throne on its dais on the extreme right, on which are the (discarded) throne and sceptre, and by a large whole length portrait of Louis XVIII, scowling and caricatured, inscribed 'Louis le Bien Aimé'. Napoleon as Harlequin (as in British Museum Satires Nos. 10060, 12515), in parti-coloured tights, a dagger in each hand, leaps through an opening cut in the canvas, hounded by the monarchs of Europe. The portrait (right) shows the fat king holding orb and sceptre, with eyes closed or downcast. The canvas from waist to knees of the portrait is cut neatly away, leaving the King's gouty feet resting squarely on a footstool. Just behind Harlequin is the fat King of Würtemberg on his knees (and paunch) firing a pair of pistols at the fugitive. Across his posterior is the word 'Clown'. Beside him Ferdinand of Spain falls backwards, overbalanced by an attempt to kick ; his crown falls off and he flourishes a sword. He is identified by his slashed doublet, cloak, and flapped boots. Behind (left) a fat powerful Cossack, representing Russia, prods Napoleon with his long spear. He wears a fur cap, trousers tucked into his boots, and has a pair of pistols in his belt. Farther back is the Emperor of Austria wearing a wallet inscribed 'Pantaloon'. He is bearded, slippered, spectacled, and lean, wearing a crown and a dressing-gown. He shuffles forward with clenched fists, holding a dagger. On the extreme left is the Pope, wearing a mitre and holding a headsman's axe against his shoulder. Other figures are nearer the wall which forms a background. Foremost of these is the King of Prussia, close behind Napoleon and firing a blunderbuss. Next is the grotesque Dutchman who stands for the new King of Holland, smoking a pipe, and firing a musket with a fiercely intent expression. Three unidentified crowned heads, and a sharp profile ( ? Bernadotte) with bayonets and spear, and an arm holding up a spiked club make up the crowd of attackers. One of the monarchs takes down from the wall (or hangs up) a three-quarter length portrait of 'Columbine', a young woman with a feathered hat and plump arms held akimbo. She is either Marie Louise (as in British Museum Satires No. 12515), or, according to Broadley, the Duchesse d'Angoulême, an identification supported by the position of her portrait in the same room as that of Louis XVIII."--British Museum online catalogue.

From the upper left corner of the design a shaft of light surrounded by clouds descends towards Fox. In this are the winged heads of six members of the Opposition, all wearing bonnets-rouges and looking towards the 'Droit de l'Homme'. In front is Norfolk, next and on the left is Lansdowne with an inscrutable smile. They are followed by Bedford; above him are Tierney and Lauderdale. "A design based on Gillray's 'Maniac Ravings', British Museum Satires No. 9998. Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, but poorly characterized, stands addressing an audience of seated men who listen with varying expressions, the corner of his platform projecting into a sea of heads (left), while on the right a file of soldiers with fixed bayonets or drawn swords is indicated. At his side, the little King of Rome, in officer's uniform, with a plumed bicorne, gapes down at the audience; his over-long sabre trails on the ground, he bestrides a tall military cane; his profile resembles without repeating (as in other prints) that of his father, but remains childish and blank. Napoleon stands in a commanding attitude with his right arm extended, his left hand on the hilt of his sabre, legs apart. He wears military dress with a plumed bicorne in which a tricolour cockade is unusually conspicuous. Behind him (right) his arm-chair, closely copied from the 'Consular Chair' of British Museum Satires No. 9998 and with a similar Medusa head, falls, all its legs in air. Beside it, a damaged terrestrial globe, as in British Museum Satires No. 9998, has fallen, but is directed to the left instead of to the right; it has the inscriptions 'America' and 'Atlantic Ocean'. As before, Napoleon's words radiate from his head as if inscribed on clouds. On the right, reading downward: 'Did I not swear I would destroy Austria? Did I not swear I would destroy Prussia Did I not leave the Russians 1200 pieces of cannon to build a monument of the victory of Moscow Did I not lead 498,000 men to gather fresh Laurels in Russia--Did I not burn Moscow--and leave 400,000 brave soldiers to perish in the snow for the good of the French nation?' On the left: 'Did I not swear I would destroy Sweden Did I not swear "I would have" Colonies & Commerce [see British Museum Satires No. 10439, &c.] Did I not build more ships than you could find Sailors for" Did I not burn all the British produce bought and paid for by my faithful merchants--before their faces, for the good of them and my good people of Paris? Have I not called my troops from Holland--that they might not winter in that foggy climate? [see British Museum Satires No. 12102, &c.] Have I not called my troops from Spain and Portugal to the ruin of the English? Did I not change my religion and turn Turk, for the good of the French Nation [see British Museum Satires No. 9973, &c.]. Have I not blown up [the earliest instance in the 'O.E.D.' of blow up, meaning to scold, is Lytton's 'Pelham', 1827] the Corporal, for blowing up the Bridge [see British Museum Satires No. 12108] Have I not robbed the Churches of twenty flags to send to my Empress, for the loss of my own flags & Eagles? "Napoleon, not caricatured, stands on a balcony, leaning forward to look down at the scene which Death, a skeleton, points out. He wears his petit-chapeau, and his uniform, without orders, is buttoned to the neck. Death is perched on the parapet, turning his head to the left, to stare in Napoleon's face; in his right hand is his javelin; he points with outstretched left hand. His hour-glass stands on the parapet, which is inscribed 'More Horrors' and 'Death and Destruction'. Below (right) are the heads and shoulders of a mob with pikes, bayonets, and imperial eagles. There are two heads on pikes. Behind them are the roofs and towers of a corner of Paris, with a domed church surmounted by a cross. Close behind Napoleon stand four of his marshals or generals, staring down at the scene of bloodshed. Next the Emperor is Ney, his hand on his sword; the others are probably Vandamme, Davout, and Lefebvre, as in British Museum Satires No. 12527. The Devil stands behind, grasping Ney and Napoleon in his hairy arms. His grinning head looks to the left, between those of his victims. "Napoleon, 'Corsican Tiger', with the body of a tiger, and wearing his feathered bicorne, puts his fore-paws on a bunch of four yelping and prostrate dogs, one with a collar inscribed 'Royal Greyhound' (the collars of the others being hidden). He turns his head in profile to the left. to glare savagely at a pack of 'Patriotic Greyhounds'. The two foremost bark fiercely at him, their heads close to his, others are streaking down a steep hill (l.) towards him. Narrow water divides the land on which Napoleon stands from three other projecting pieces of land on the r. In the foreground a 'Dutch Frog' sits smoking a pipe and watching the conflict, saying, "It will be my turn to have a slap at him next." On a cliff behind the frog 'Iohn Bull', a 'cit', stands aiming his musket at the tiger; he says: "There was a little Man, And he had a little gun, And his Bullets were made of lead, D------n me but we'll manage him amongst us. "On a more distant plain a bear on its hind legs faces an eagle with three crowned heads: they are 'Russian Bear & Austrian Eagle', and are linked together by a heavy chain attached to collars on the bear and eagle. "Napoleon (right) lies on his face under the sharp teeth of a harrow; two ropes are attached to it, at each of which representatives of three nations are tugging. In the foreground a British sailor hauls behind him a Spanish don in slashed tunic and breeches, feathered hat, cloak, and ruff. The third is a man of nondescript appearance wearing a cap with a drooping peak, probably intended to represent Sicily, which the British had held as an outpost against Napoleon. On the other rope the chief figure is a Prussian hussar; next him is (?) a Swede in a fur cap, and on the end of the rope a man wearing a cavalry helmet of French type is probably intended for an Austrian. These six fill the left of the design. Russia is represented by a bearded Cossack who stands on the right, prodding at Napoleon with his long spear. On the harrow sits a fat Dutchman, smoking his pipe with a fiercely preoccupied expression, with his left hand in his breeches pockets. Napoleon, much distressed, cries: "Oh this heavy Dutchman.
