She wears a nightgown and lace-trimmed cap. Behind her in the shadowed depths of the bed the night-capped head of her elderly and (?) sleeping husband, rests on the pillow. She looks, weeping, towards an open sash-window through which is seen a fleet sailing towards the horizon. In the window (left) is a cushioned window seat on which (besides a stocking) is an open book: 'Studies of Academic Attitudes taken from the Life'; on one page is a nude woman lying in sensual abandonment. On the right against the curtains of the bed is a dressing-table on which, besides toilet-articles, are a flask of 'Maraschino', a 'Composing Draught', and a pot of 'Rouge à la Naples'. On the carpeted floor (right) are objects from Sir W. Hamilton's collection, with an open book: 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Naples Caprea &c. &c.'; on the right page is a satyr chasing a nymph. In the hook which replaces his right hand are cords attached to barbed hooks which transfix the jaws of nine (tricolour) crocodiles. In the foreground crocodiles are contorted in death-agony, one emits tiny crocodiles in a gush of water from its jaws. Two swim off (left). One disappears with tail erect. Behind (right) the jaws of a monster larger than the others gape from the water, emitting a fiery explosion. The crocodiles are tricolour, most shed tears. In the background the Nile winds inland, tiny crocodiles are indicated swimming in its mouth. John, knife in his right hand, about to swallow a French ship speared on his fork, says: "What! more Frigasees? - why you sons o' bitches, you, where do ye think I shall find room to stow all you bring in? - " In the foreground is Nelson, in profile to the left, his face bearing scars; from his pocket hangs a 'List of French Ships Taken Burnt & destroy[ed]'. His dish is 'Fricassée à la Nelson'. Howe, full-face, is the centre of the group with 'Fricando à la Howe'. Warren holds up 'Desert à la Warren'. "The surface of a platform stretches across the design; on this Pitt (right), valiant but anxious, faces the massive Russian bear, Paul, behind whom stands a stout ferocious-looking Russian soldier (like a showman with a performing animal), nearsightedly reading a document: 'Be it known to all men, - that my master, - the most Magnanimous [see BMSat 9415] most puissant, most powerful and most wonderful great Bear of the north - being in his sound and sober senses - Challenges the Whole World to single combat - and commences his first trial of skill, here in Moorfields, after which it is his intention to persue his Travels, and visit every Court in Europe - Asia - Africa - and America'. The bear wears a plumed crown, a collar inscribed 'Paul Bruin', to which are attached the massive links of a chain. His drawn sword is 'Temper'd-á-lá-Suwarrow!' On his shield is a grotesque head with gaping mouth, and the inscription 'Swallow All O.' Pitt wears a plumed helmet and light armour.
