"An old sow lies exhausted on a pile of straw outside a sty roofed with dilapidated thatch. She is beset by thirty-two voracious piglets with human heads. [The identifications are those of Miss Banks, confirmed by Lord Holland. The identifications of Wright and Evans are incomplete; Ellenborough is called the Speaker.] John Bull, a clumsy yokel in a smock, holding a pitchfork, looks over the low stone wall surrounding the sty. He exclaims: "O Lord - O Lord! - well! - I never had such a Litter of hungry Pigs in all my life before! - why, they's beyond all count! - where the devil do they think I shall find Wash & Grains for all their Guts? - zookers, why they a drain the poor old Sow to an Otomy! - 'e'cod She'll make but bad Bacon for Boney, when they's all done sucking o' her - !!!' In the centre of the struggling mass of pigs is Fox with Grenville on his left. and Grey on his right. He bestrides the Duke of Clarence, whose hind-quarters only (clad in blue and buff) are visible, and supports his right. hind-leg on the back of the Prince of Wales, who is in back view but wearing a ribbon and unmistakable. Grey also clambers over the Prince. On Grenville's l. is his fat nephew, Lord Temple. The head next Grenville is that of Sidmouth, across whose back Lord Henry Petty scrambles open-mouthed. Above Petty, Sheridan scrambles avidly over the sow; Erskine, in his Chancellor's wig scampers over the sow's hind leg. Lauderdale, whose body is chequered to indicate tartan, is behind Grenville, next him (l.) is Vansittart; on the left of the latter is a group of three plump pigs one with the head concealed, the others smiling with complacent anticipation; they are Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn and his two brothers, see BMSat 9760, &c. Behind them (l.) three pigs scamper towards the sow (l. to r.): Tierney, the Duke of Bedford, and Lord Derby. Behind again, and on the extreme left. are five rather smaller animals: George Walpole, Adair (half cut off by the margin), Burdett, Horne Tooke wearing clerical bands, and Lord Carlisle. On the r. of Grey and the Prince are Lord St. Vincent, with a foreleg on the Prince, Courteney, a foreleg on Grey, Lord Spencer who has secured a teat, and Windham who clambers downwards from the sow's shoulder. Between Courteney and Spencer is a pig whose head is concealed, 'not meant for any body'. "Ministers and others, holding hands, caper in a ring round a pole to which are symmetrically attached the decollated heads of the Cato Street conspirators executed on 1 May, see British Museum Satires No. 13707, &c. Between Sidmouth and the smiling Castlereagh is a man wearing a black mask, and with a blood-stained knife in his mouth, perhaps one of the two who turned King's evidence. On the right, taking Castlereagh's left hand, is the Attorney-General, Gifford, grinning diabolically. Holding Sidmouth's left hand is Vansittart (in his gown). Facing these two are Canning and Chief Justice Abbott in his robes. Four others are poorly characterized. They dance to a fiddle played by Edwards who sits on a grassy mound (right), with an empty gibbet behind his head. "Ministers, much burlesqued, registering terror or anxiety, are grouped on either side of a large bottle of 'Evidence against the Queen' from which rise clouds of smoke, inscribed 'Lies' (four times) and 'Non mi Ricordo' [five times]. On the left sits Liverpool, saying: "We shall be all sent to the Devil." Next him Eldon scowls: "D--n that Non mi Ricordo." Wellington, fiercely anxious, stands behind Liverpool's chair holding a scimitar. Facing Liverpool sits Sidmouth, holding his clyster-pipe to his nostril, and exclaiming: "O! how reviving." "George III, in back view, seated at a writing-table, tries to fend off members of the new Ministry who beset him with conflicting plans and proposals. He exclaims "What, What, What! [his habitual phrase] all Wrong! all Wrong." On his right Fox is seated, but falls back dismayed, his chair collapsing; he holds 'Proposals for a General Peace', saying, "I am certain John Bull will like my plan better than any of them, sign mine." Next him is Ellenborough, in wig and gown, his left hand on the back of Fox's chair, which (perhaps) he is causing to fall; he proffers a 'Plan of a New Mode of Justice', and says: "The only specimen among them of a knowledge of the Subject, Sign this." (The inclusion of the Lord Chief Justice in the Cabinet was much objected to, on constitutional grounds, see 'Ann. Reg.', 1806, pp. 28-33, and BMSat 10563.) Moira, in regimentals, kneeling on a chair on the extreme right., leans forward, one hand on Ellenborough's shoulder, to present a 'Project for improveing of Ordinance'; he says: "By St Patrick now, if you was to put the whole of them together you would not be able to make a bit of sense out of them, this is the only one for John Bull." Windham, next Ellenborough, faces the King, presenting a paper inscribed 'War on the Continent', and saying, "I say nothing more or less than that they are all bad but this". Behind him Tierney stands, profferring a blank paper; he says: "Only look at mine & you'll be convinced its quite the thing." The others are on the King's l. Sheridan, a pendent to Fox, leans forward with his paper: 'Manager of the Finan[ces]'; he says: "Here sign this, this is the only good plan of management, all complete nonsense compared with this" [the hopeless confusion and debt in which the finances of Drury Lane were involved by Sheridan's management are satirized]. He wears, under his laced coat, the chequered waistcoat and breeches of Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. Behind him is Grenville, his partly obscured paper inscribed on the; he says: "This is the only well digested plan pro bona [sic] Publico, you may depend upon it." Petty's paper is blank; he says: "This petty effusion of Ideas you'll find full of weighty argument on every subject I assure you." Erskine (the arch-egotist, see BMSat 9246, &c), in wig and gown, and with the Purse of the Great Seal, leans forward with a blank paper to say: "This is the only learned plan among them, which I have arranged, I' I' I." "On the left. Fox stands at his tavern-door, which is at r. angles to the front of the house (r.), where a large open sash-window faces the spectator. Below the window is a large inscription: 'C. J. F & Co. Dealers Rectifiers and Compounders [the 'nf' of 'confounders' is scored through, and replaced by 'mp'] of foreign Spirits'. Beside the window are chequers, indicating the sale of ale; below them: 'Whitbreads intire' [cf. BMSat 10421]. Over the door is the sign: a crown, and 'The Case is Altered' [cf. BMSat 9714], with a bunch of grapes indicating the sale of wine. Fox, very neat and debonair, with a napkin under his arm, a corkscrew in his coat-pocket, a typical tavern-keeper or head-waiter, smiles at a ragged, Bohemian-looking fellow, who approaches him, with outstretched left hand, a large book under his right. arm inscribed 'Pl[an] of Reform'. The ragged reformer says: "Ah! Citizen, how do you do. I've just finisd my plan of Reform, and as you have no plan we can as well be going on with that as doing nothing." Fox, his hand thrust in his coat-pocket, answers: "Citizen!!! we-go-on-with your plan!!! I dont understand you Oh!. I suppose you mean what I used to gammon my Custommers with when I lived over the way, but that sort of fun wont do now, we are all different people!" Within the open window members of the new Ministry are seated drinking, as if at a tavern-club meeting, with Erskine, wearing a hat and Chancellor's wig and gown, in the chairman's seat, which is surmounted by the Prince of Wales's feathers (see BMSat 10525); he holds the mace. On the left. (or Erskine's r.) are Sheridan (a bottle of 'Sherry' in front of him), Grey, and Lauderdale. "On the r. a rustic fountain gushes from the mouth of Lord Henry Petty, whose head and shoulders emerge from a stone wall or rock surrounded by trees. The water expands and falls by billowing stages into a sea, the horizon (l.) inscribed 'Unfathomable Sea of Taxation'. In this sea 'cormorants', with human heads and huge beaks (projecting from their profiles) and pelican-like pouches, are greedily fishing, while a rowing boat founders, throwing into the water John Bull, who drops an oar inscribed 'William Pitt'; only his head (submerged up to the mouth) and arms emerge. The water from Petty's mouth is inscribed (thrice) 'New Taxes'; the upper level of the fountain: 'New Salt Tax', 'new Coffee Tax', 'new Tea Tax', 'new Hop- Tax', 'new Malt-Tax', 'new Assessed Taxes', 'New Tax on Sugar', 'New Spirit Tax', 'New Tobacco Tax', 'New Candle Tax', 'New Glass Tax'. Beside Grenville stands Fox, equally large, stooping over the water, to receive a dense mass of fish which leap as if by suction into his mouth; other fish swim and leap towards him. Beside Fox is the head and elongated neck of Moira, with a large lobster in his beak. On the extreme left. Windham skims the water, flying towards a number of crabs. Grey (Lord Howick) swims, holding in his beak two eels. A bird in judge's wig has dived head first; its solid shape suggests Ellenborough rather than Erskine. On the r. three birds skim downwards over the rocks towards Sidmouth; they are Bedford followed by Horne Tooke (wearing bands, cf. BMSat 9716, &c.) and Burdett. On the water's edge in the middle distance stands Buckingham, wearing a ribbon and swallowing three large fish. Little Lord Derby beside him stoops for one small fish. In the sky a flight of countless birds makes for the fish. "George III (l.), just risen from the throne, kicks Grenville from the presence, holding him by the pigtail, and raising the sceptre to smite. Other members of the Ministry flee in confusion, their gestures showing that they also have been kicked. The Kings head, as a sign of respect, is hidden by a pillar in heavy shadow which supports the voluminous canopy over the throne, itself in full light. A large label floats from the King: " - what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you! - what you thought I was like little-Boney & would turn Turk, or any thing? - but if You have no Faith or Conscience - I have!! - ay, & a little Old Protestant Spunk too! - So Out with you all!! - out! - with all your Broad-bottom'd- Popish Plots!!! - Out with you - out! - out! - out!" Grenville wears peer's robes, which fly back, exposing his heavy posteriors (cf. BMSat 10530) to the King's toe. He drops a long scroll: 'Catholic Bill - for bringing the Papists into Power & supporting the Broad bottom Jesuits in their Places for securing the Papists in commanding of the Army & Navy & all the Public offices - .' This tears as it floats over the shoulder of Howick, the mover of the Bill. Grenville is propelled against the massive Ellenborough, who hurries forward with a savage backward glare. The spectacled Buckingham looks up at his brother in dismay. Temple, huge and globular, waddles off, feeling his damaged back. In front of him, Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), slinks off stooping low. In the foreground Petty and Erskine lie on their backs, legs in the air, both in their gowns, Erskine having dropped the Purse of the Great Seal. Behind the nearer figures are (l. to r.): Windham, Moira with both arms raised, and Lauderdale, looking to the left.; next, Sidmouth in full flight, and on the extreme right. a head identified by Miss Banks as Fitzpatrick, but resembling Gillray's Adair. On the back of the throne within a wreath: 'G 3d/ R.' On its r., and on the extreme left., is a stool which supports a cushion on which rest a large 'Bible' and a crown. Abstract:
"George III (l.), just risen from the throne, kicks Grenville from the presence, holding him by the pigtail, and raising the sceptre to smite. Other members of the Ministry flee in confusion, their gestures showing that they also have been kicked. The Kings head, as a sign of respect, is hidden by a pillar in heavy shadow which supports the voluminous canopy over the throne, itself in full light. A large label floats from the King: " - what! - what! - bring in the Papists! - O you cunning Jesuits, you! - what you thought I was like little-Boney & would turn Turk, or any thing? - but if You have no Faith or Conscience - I have!! - ay, & a little Old Protestant Spunk too! - So Out with you all!! - out! - with all your Broad-bottom'd- Popish Plots!!! - Out with you - out! - out! - out!" Grenville wears peer's robes, which fly back, exposing his heavy posteriors (cf. BMSat 10530) to the King's toe. He drops a long scroll: 'Catholic Bill - for bringing the Papists into Power & supporting the Broad bottom Jesuits in their Places for securing the Papists in commanding of the Army & Navy & all the Public offices - .' This tears as it floats over the shoulder of Howick, the mover of the Bill. Grenville is propelled against the massive Ellenborough, who hurries forward with a savage backward glare. The spectacled Buckingham looks up at his brother in dismay. Temple, huge and globular, waddles off, feeling his damaged back. In front of him, Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), slinks off stooping low. In the foreground Petty and Erskine lie on their backs, legs in the air, both in their gowns, Erskine having dropped the Purse of the Great Seal. Behind the nearer figures are (l. to r.): Windham, Moira with both arms raised, and Lauderdale, looking to the left.; next, Sidmouth in full flight, and on the extreme right. a head identified by Miss Banks as Fitzpatrick, but resembling Gillray's Adair. On the back of the throne within a wreath: 'G 3d/ R.' On its r., and on the extreme left., is a stool which supports a cushion on which rest a large 'Bible' and a crown. "Heading to a broadside printed in two columns. In a coop (right) are cocks and hens with human heads, the foreign witnesses against Queen Caroline. Sidmouth empties coins from a large green bag into their feeding trough, resting one foot on an apothecary's pestle and mortar. On the extreme left is a countryman in a smock who hands a letter to Castlereagh, saying: "Your Servent Sirs, I be com'd from a great fat Gentleman at W--d--r who wishes to know whether your Foreign Brood feeds well and if they are likely to pay for their keeping and he hopes, you'll keep a strict Eye over 'em and not let 'em take Flight as he understands they are very shy--and he says you shou'd look to their Plumage as he dont know but they may soon be made a Show of." Castlereagh, who holds a scourge, answers: "They thrive so fast they'll soon be fit for use--The Napoleons are more fattening than Caroline Rice but I'm rather afraid of that Rastellian Capon he seems to wish to peck his way out and be off--I'm afraid he's drank too much from the Po-Well as the water at present is rather Stagnated and now he's in good condition the Milan Springs [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.] must be more palatable." Liverpool stands with a hand on Castlereagh's shoulder, silently holding a large purse inscribed 'Treasury Grain'. His back is to Sidmouth, who says: "True good C--r--gh I do declare they have Molted well already what a wonderful change--& if Brougham dont clip their Wings they'll amply repay us for our trouble for they can (according to the Old Proverb) Lie as fast as a Cock pecks Barley." Majocchi looks out through the bars, saying: "I am Cock of the Walk. If you wish more to know I'm the Infamous Segnior Non mi Ri cor do" [see British Museum Satires No. 13827]. Louise Demont looks up pertly: "Once Femme De Chambre To the Queen Now I support Sids Bag of Green [see British Museum Satires No. 13735] Doodle doo." The head of a man crouching in the Bag looks up to say: "Yes I have some choice Tales to communicate what with Bargemen--Chambermaids--W....s and Rogues, whom I have had the honor to associate with. I shall be able to COOK up a high seasoned dish that his M.....y will relish." "Design in an oval, placed on an oblong background representing a stone wall, and thus simulating the projection of a magic lantern. The figures, except Wilberforce, are light against a dark background. Addington, Hawkesbury, and Fox, as the three witches in Macbeth, cook their hell-broth in a cauldron. From this rises a cloud inscribed 'PEACE' which frames a skeleton (of Britannia). Its long hair shows that it is that of a woman; in one hand is a trident, in the other her shield. From the pot issue the tail and one paw of the British lion. His decollated head lies on the ground (right); on it stands a crowing Gallic cock wearing a tiny bonnet rouge. Addington stands on the left ladling into the pot guineas from a sack inscribed: 'To make Gruel Thick & Slab' [Macbeth, iv. i]. He raises his right arm, holding up an olive branch; a serpent twines round arm and branch; its fangs pointing at the word 'Peace'. Hawkesbury crouches on the right, recklessly feeding the fire with papers inscribed: 'Dominion of the Sea', 'Egypt', 'Malta', 'Cape', 'Continental Alliances', 'Honduras', 'Switzerland', 'Brit[isk] Isles'; beside him are others: 'Gibralter' and 'Ireland'. Passing an open door is Caroline, "The brewers wife." On the right are three men, one says, "Be just in all your dealings." "Fox as Abdallah, captain of the thieves, leads his band towards the treasure-cave; he stands in profile to the right., facing the cave where a Chancellor's gown and a Chief Justice's gown are suspended. On a table decorated with the Royal Arms are three coronets; in front of it, two sacks of 'Cash', a mace, large rolls of parchment inscribed 'Places' and 'Pensions'. The thieves all wear jewelled turbans with aigrettes, Turkisn trousers tucked into boots, zouave jackets edged with fur over short sleeves. Each holds a sabre. Fox exclaims "Open Sesame." The thieves are crowded together behind Fox and Sheridan, who points to the cave, turning round to say: "Glorious spoils comrades in this Cavern of Ours, surely there is enoug to satisfy us all, I long to lead a sober steady Life." The other thieves are not characterized, and it is not clear to which speaker the different speeches belong. Behind and between Sheridan and Fox is Sidmouth saying: "Blister me [cf. BMSat 9849] if I dont think my exploits deserve that roll of Parchment." Windham (regarded as a war-monger, cf. BMSat 9871), says: "I should like a little cutting and slashing befor I left off Buisiness!" The Marquis of Buckingham, indicated by spectacles, says: "If the Cady will but make me a Viceroy ill give up this buisiness at once." This speech is also connected with Bedford's profile Next the head of the latter is that of the tall Moira. Erskine (1.) says: "I'll take the black gown trim'd with gold, and the valuble [the mace] that belongs to it. for my share". An unappropriated speech must belong to Ellenborough (not discoverable): "Well I'll take the one with the Fur upon it, and some thing to make up for the want of Gold trimming." Others of the band are little Lord Henry Petty looking up at Sheridan and the bulky Grenville with his sabre resting on his shoulder. "George IV, dressed as Henry VIII and with cavalry boots decorated with rosettes, sits on the throne (right), shrinking angrily from oxen wearing civic gowns who bow, presenting petitions. All the horns of the oxen are tipped with tiny caps resembling caps of Liberty; a slightly larger pair protects the prongs of a fork held up on the extreme left above the massed heads of the beasts. On this a placard is speared: 'Petitions from every Part of the World--(Hole's and Corner's excepted) to Dismiss the Ministers-- signed by upwards of 999,999--Millions of the Brute Creation.' The petitions of the four beasts in the front row are headed: 'Petition of Lord Mayor & Citizens of London to Dismiss Ministers'; 'Petitions from every part of England & Wales to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; '. . . ions from every Part of Scotland to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; 'Petitions from every part of Ireland . . . [ut supra]'. Hooves rise from cattle behind holding more petitions: 'from Europe'; 'From Asia'; 'from Africa'; 'from America'; 'from every Honest Man'. The canopied throne is raised on a dais of three steps, the footstool is a cushion supported on a (carved) elephant; but the King's feet are drawn back. His right hand is on his hip; he holds an oddly shaped sceptre in the left hand. The back of the throne is framed by carved mannikins with shackled hands and feet; a large crown rests on the heads of the two uppermost. The back of the canopy has a pattern of writhing serpents. Ministers, much caricatured, stand on the right and left of the dais. In the foreground (right) and on the King's left, Wellington, with the apron and steel of a butcher (as in British Museum Satires No. 13288), with gauntlet gloves and with a star on his tunic, holds a blood-stained battle-axe. Sidmouth, as Court-fool, sits in profile to the left on an apothecary's mortar, wearing a double-peaked fool's cap and a star, and holding a bladder which is his clyster-pipe. Behind is Eldon, scowling savagely and holding the mace and the Purse of the Great Seal. A bishop holding a crosier stands on either side of the throne, behind the Ministers. A staff supports an emblematical cask which a naked Bacchus bestrides. On the King's right is Liverpool, holding a tall staff to which a green bag is tied (see British Museum Satires No. 13735). Next him is Castlereagh, blandly sinister, holding a scourge, and with a bunch of keys hanging from his belt; he stares at the petitioners. A tiny Vansittart is beside him, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, with an 'X' on his breast above a chequered pattern, hung diamond-wise. Immensely fat and absurd beefeaters stand along the back of the room under quasi-Gothic windows of stained glass. All hold tridents and turn their eyes towards the petitioners, grinning grotesquely. Each window is centred by an escutcheon on which a decanter is the chief object. The upper part of each is filled by a design of three large peacock's feathers (see British Museum Satires No. 13299). King George IV and entourage laden with provisions, about to embark from Brighton in the Royal Yacht; representing the extravagant monarch's distressed retreat from England at the time of the Queen's trial and "George IV leads a procession to the waterside to embark in the royal yacht, preceded by the Attorney-General with a 'Green Bag' [see No. 13735] under each arm, and a bottle of 'Milan Brandy' [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.] in each hand. The latter, much caricatured and with a malevolent countenance, says: "The Tide is against His Ma--je--ty but should He be able to clear Cuckolds Point [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13769] no doubt he will easily weather Cape Horn." The King, wearing sailor's trousers, rollicks along between Lady Hertford and Lady Conyngham (see British Museum Satires No. 13847), arm-in-arm with both and looking towards the latter. He holds in one hand a purse inscribed '2/6', in the other a bottle: 'Decoction of Bergamy', and wears a long watch-ribbon inscribed 'Non mi ricordo' [see British Museum Satires No. 13827]. Both ladies carry reticules inscribed '2/6' [half a crown, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13826]. Lady Hertford: "I hope your Ma--je--ty will not forget your promise (when in Hertford) to take a peep in Y--amouth [sic] Roads--as the Sea breezes might be beneficial." Lady Conyngham: "Don't doubt us your Ma--je--ty we shall never be wanting to lend a Hand to raise the Royal G . . . e." Behind walk Sidmouth and Castlereagh, the latter wearing a triangular hat, holding a scourge and fetters and with a package inscribed 'Irish Wiskey Triangular Proceedings' [see British Museum Satires No. 14135] under his arm. Sidmouth carries a 'Royal Medecine Chest' under his arm, with a clyster-pipe (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849) inscribed 'Portable Soup'; on his head is a commode-pan inscribed 'Stink Pot for the Radicals'. He says: "Take care of the Green Bags, Stow 'em safe-- for should the Sea Water touch them they'll rot sooner than is expected--and his Ma--je--ty would run the chance of loosing half a Crown" [see British Museum Satires No. 13826]. They are followed by Liverpool and Canning, both wearing, like the King, top-hats ornamented with crowns, to show they are the King's servants. Liverpool has a pen behind his ear and carries two bags, one inscribed 'Pursers Profits', the other 'Nip Cheese 75 Per Cent'. He says "one and one makes two. Canning carries a weathercock (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13737) and says: "A fine Breeze and we shall soon be out of the scent of Cotton Yard [see British Museum Satires No. 13824] theres a kind of Vapour gathering in that Quarter that's likely to be very offensive, unless the rubbish is shortly removed!!" In the foreground on the extreme left walks Sir William Curtis, in the sailor's dress of the Walcheren Expedition, see British Museum Satires No. 11353, &c. He has a vast paunch inscribed 'The Orphans Fund' [see British Museum Satires No. 13706] and 'Blubber', and carries a large turtle, a knife, and a long spoon. He says: "Who so blythe so blythe as we to take a voyage a voyage to Sea Along with his great Ma--j--ty." Behind is a man carrying on his head a basket of kitchen 'Stores': gridiron, kettle, &c. "Heading to a lithographed broadside. The interior of a boarded sty in which a great boar, with the head of George IV, lies upon straw, boar and straw being spotted with black. Castlereagh empties a bucket of brandy into an overflowing trough, while Sidmouth leans over the half-door to squirt the animal with his clyster-pipe (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849). The former says: "Friend Sid-- the Augean Stables were nothing to clense, compar'd to this Stye!!!" Sidmouth: "Aye, my worthy Fellow Servant, you will find the Stye, your Masterpiece! and with all my care, I can't make this Beast appear decent, he is so cover'd with filth!!" The first and last of five verses: 'In fam'd Pell-Mell [Carlton House] is kept a Boar, Which no strong tie can bind, No Savage Beast e'er known before, Was like it in its kind: Its breech so large, 'twould fill a barge. "The White Horse of Hanover (the King) kicks violently; he has thrown off members of the Ministry who lie under his heels, while Howick and Grenville are about to fall from the saddle; the reins have broken. On the horse's shoulder is the star of the Garter. Grenville, on the hind-quarters, his peer's robe floating behind him, holds the (torn) 'Catholic Bil[l]', while he clutches the slipping Howick. In the middle distance (l.) John Bull, a yokel in a smock, watches delightedly, saying, "Dang it! he has kicked um off at last zure enough! Aye, Aye, it was that cursed Catholic Bill tickled his rightump and set him a Kicking." Sidmouth lies in front of the animal, holding up his arm; he clutches a clyster-pipe (cf. BMSat 9849). The others (l. to r.) are Petty and Erskine in their gowns; the former clutches Howick's r. ankle, dragging him down; the latter sits on a cushion inscribed '4.000 Pr Anm' [see BMSat 10714.] He says: "I've had a cursed short ride! and if it had not been for this little cushion I should have a confounded thump on my Rump." Ellenborough tries to protect his head from the horse's heels. Sheridan, as Harlequin (see BMSat 9916), sprawls on the ground, bleeding at the nose. Moira runs off, as does Temple, also with a bleeding nose; he says: "Curse that Stone I've broke my Nose against it." Before him is a large piece of 'Portland Stone' [see BMSat 10718, &c]; behind him is his spectacled father, Buckingham. "Addington and Napoleon face each other defiantly across a narrow channel. Addington, the nearer, is the larger, and much the taller. He wears regimentals, cocked hat, and shapeless boots; he stands with arms akimbo, sabre in his hand; from each pocket projects a medicine-bottle, one labelled 'Composing Draft', the other 'Stimulating Draft'. He looks at Napoleon with a chop-fallen stare, saying, "who's afraid? damme? - \ O Lord. O Lord - what a Firey Fellow he is! \ - Who's afraid? damme? \ O dear! what will become of ye Roast Beef? \ damme! who's afraid? \ O dear! O dear." (The lines are alternately in large and tiny letters to distinguish between words spoken aloud and to himself.) He straddles across a steaming sirloin on a dish inscribed: 'O the Roast Beef of Old England'. Napoleon, who straddles even more widely, holds the hilt of his sabre; his head is large, his cocked hat grotesquely huge. He glares at the beef, saying, "Ah! ha, sacrè dieu! vat do I see yonder? \ Dat look so invitinly Red & de Vite? - \ Oh by Gar! I see 'tis de Roast Beef of Londres \ Vich I vill chop up, at von letel bite!" (Cf. BMSat 5790.) Behind Addington is the front bench in the House of Commons. "The King's head, framed in wig and whiskers, appears above a huge green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735) which he is holding up in both hands to shake out the contents, five ragamuffins, who fall out head first. Bag and King are supported by the bent backs of Castlereagh (left) and Sidmouth (right), the King's toe resting on a shoulder of each. The bag is inscribed in large letters: 'Respectable Witnesses for the [a large crown is depicted] against the Q--n.' It is labelled: 'To Dr Circular [see British Museum Satires No. 13282], Ld Triangle [see British Museum Satires No. 14135] & C° London.' The King says: "My hopes and prospects, depend, upon the very doubtful, veracity, of these Six Italians!" Castlereagh: "Friend Sid--we must make Barons of these six Italian Allies to make their evidence, appear stronger!" Sidmouth: "Ah! My worthy Colleague, and your Lordship knows, we must dress them up, at the Public expence, for at present, I never see, such Ragged Rascals!" On the ground by Castlereagh are a scourge, and a document: 'Bill of Pains and Penalties' [see British Museum Satires No. 13825]; other papers: 'Secret Service Money £10.000 for each Witness' and 'Queen's Petition to the Lords'. In the background (left) are the masts and sails of a ship. Below the design: 'Dover, Friday, July 7, 1820. This Morning Six of the Italian Allies arrived. The good people of this town flocked to see them. They were escorted by an Austrian Agent, and a Milan Attorney. Such a set of ragged Rascals never were seen before. Such Wretches as go about with dancing dogs and monkeys, white mice, tame snakes, and land-turtles. The Magistrates got a guard of Constables to protect them, for fear the people should fling them into the sea. They were kept guarded till two coaches were brought to put them into. They were then driven off amidst the hisses, cries, and yells, of the men, women, and chrildren [sic], of this humane, loyal, and public-spirited Town. They seemed frightened out of their wits at this honest expression of the feelings of the People. "The Ministry defend 'The Citadel of Office' behind a high stone wall against different Opposition groups. The chief defence is by the tiny Perceval who fires a cannon from whose muzzle issue three heads intended for Wellesley, Ryder, and Melville. Ten half length caricature portraits arranged in two rows, and, except for the last two, in separate compartments, each illustrating a section of the verse-satire. The date is after Peterloo (16 August 1819), see British Museum Satires No. 13258, and before the King's death (29 Jan. 1820). [1] 'Derry-Down-Triangle', Castlereagh, with ass's ears, his head, adorned by a tiny gibbet, turned in profile to the left, holds up a scourge. On a scroll is the motto 'EIREN·GO·BRAY' (see British Museum Satires No. 13301). [2] 'State Jackal', Canning, directed to the left, holds a pistol in each hand. On his head is a triangle, bells hanging from its apex as from a fool's cap. Behind him is a package inscribed 'Lisbon 20.000 weight'. For his much-attacked mission to Lisbon see British Museum Satires No. 12872, for the duel with Castlereagh, British Museum Satires No. 11370, &c. [3] 'Quack Doctor' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849], Sidmouth, in profile to the left, holds a pike on which is speared a ball inscribed 'Circular Pills' [see British Museum Satires No. 13282, &c.]. On his head is a pestle and mortar inscribed 'Drugs for John Bull'. At his back is a large 'Bible' (like Liverpool he was an Evangelical). [4] 'Chancery Jack', the shoulders of Eldon, who scowls to the right, emerge from a 'Coal Tub' (as son of a Newcastle hoastman or coal-broker). He wears wig and gown, across his forehead is a bandage inscribed 'In Chancery'; from his mouth issues the word 'Equity'. [5] Liverpool, in profile to the left, spoons into his mouth liquid from a bowl of 'Water Gruel for the Poor' held in his left hand. On his head is a round tea-tray inscribed '£4.000'; on this are two cups and an urn inscribed 'Cordial Tea'. [6] 'Croaking-Frog--' Croker sits, pen in hand, in profile to the left; on his head is a frog. At his shoulder is a flag inscribed Dry . Rot . In . Navy' above two broken anchors. He says "Fal de Raltit," and before him is a paper: 'Talavira [sic] Algiers 2000'. He has an oddly shaped seat, resting his arm on a 'Quarterly Review', above a longer (curved) block inscribed 'Couriers'. (He was Secretary to the Admiralty, see British Museum Satires No. 12310, author of 'Talavera', a leading contributor to the 'Quarterly', and (with Arbuthnot) manager of the Press for the Ministry.) [7] 'Dunderass--' Lord Melville (First Lord of the Admiralty), in tartan, is in profile to the left, holding a pinch of snuff. Across his chest is a broad band: 'Pickings of Dad 60.000 [see British Museum Satires No. 10377, &c.] Place 10.000.' He wears a curious head-dress topped by a man-of-war surrounded by smoke. [8] 'Waterloo-Man--' Wellington, so styled by Hone, see British Museum Satires No. 13302, stands in profile to the left, wearing a cocked hat on which stands a cannon. He holds a dagger transfixing a bleeding heart; behind his back is a bundle inscribed 'Iquisition' [sic], across his chest is a placard: 'Coruption [sic] Prize . Money £60.000 Allowances £200.000 &c &c.' Above him flies the head of (?) Fitzpatrick between wings inscribed 'Hedge Lane' and 'Chick-lane' (London slums and resorts of prostitutes). An adjacent aquiline profile resembles George Hanger. "Melville, protected by Justice, stands on the 'Rock of Innocence' (l.) firing two cannon at a man-of-war, 'The Impeachment', which has already foundered on the 'Rocks of Honor and Justice'. In the foreground (l.) a bear, Whitbread (not Fox as Wright and Evans say), stands despairingly in his boat which is about to be swamped. It is in the form of a shallow tub (a brewing utensil), and is 'The Vanity-Cooler'. A pennant, 'Vanity', streams from the mast. The tattered sail is formed of papers patched together and inscribed 'Ist Report' ['. . . 2nd', '3d', &c] to '10th Report'. Whitbread's broken oar, inscribed 'Popular Clamour', falls from his paw. The boat will founder despite the efforts of three winds to fill the sail and take it into calmer water. These are heads with butterfly wings (l.) and are (l. to r.) Stanhope, Wilberforce, and Derby. Melville, in profile to the right., a stalwart figure in Highland dress with thistles in his feathered bonnet, holds a flaming torch in each hand, one 'Truth', the other 'Reason', and puts them to the touch-holes of two cannon, 'Adam' and 'Plomer'. He is lit by rays which descend from behind a swirling cloud, taking the form of wings, from which two arms emerge: in the r. hand is a pair of scales inscribed 'Impartiality'; a paper inscribed 'Integrity' outweighs 'Defamation'; on the left arm is a shield inscribed 'Justice' which is held over Melville. The blasts from the cannon are striking the battered ship; she heels over, still flying a tattered tricolour flag of 'Faction' [repeated thrice]. Two of the crew are in the water: Sidmouth, in the foreground (r.), clings to a 'Broad-Bottomd Goose-Coop' [cf. BMSat 10530], from which three cackling geese thrust their heads; it has a (tricolour) label inscribed (?) 'C. J Fox [scored through] Downing . . . [Street]'. Behind him Lauderdale's head and arms emerge from a wave, desperately trying to reach a floating barrel of 'East India Roupees'. In the foreground the waves are menacing; toward the horizon (r.) the sea is calm. "The 'Broad-Bottom Packet' sails through the mouth of a cave towards the distant shore, where the spirits of the departed stand waving a welcome. Its occupants, the defeated Ministers, are all naked. The torn sail is inscribed 'Catholic Emancipation'. To the top of the mast a cross, inscribed 'Ich dien', is bound with tricolour lashings, and is surmounted by the Prince's feathers, tied on with a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Fitz[herbert]'. Moira stands with one hand on the mast, putting a cross to his lips; his eyes are fixed on the feathers (cf. BMSat 10253, &c.). In the stern (r.) sits St. Vincent, holding the tiller and shouting: "Avast - ! Trim ye Boat! or these damn'd Broad bottom'd Lubbers will overset us all." The boat is low on the port side where are the three vast Grenvilles, with the massive Sheridan beside them. Granule, waving a Cardinal's hat, holds a chalice, and addresses the posterior of his brother, all that appears, as he grovels at the bottom of the boat; this is marked with a cross and inscribed 'Ballast from Stow'. He says: "Courage Brother! - take Extreme Unction! & don't despair." Temple sits on the edge of the boat holding a paper: 'Stationary - Paymasr Office' [see BMSat 10721, &c]; his other papers trail in the water: 'Places', 'Pensions', 'Sinecures'; a bunch of pens floats away, as does a copy of the 'Morning Chronicle', the Whig newspaper. Next him, Erskine leans over the side vomiting 'Catholic Emetic'. In the water an open wig-box is floating inscribed 'Lord Double Bottoms his Wig Kings Bench': Lord Ellenborough's wig, inscribed on one side 'Loyalty', on the other 'Opposition', is falling into the water. Behind Erskine is the tall Howick standing with one foot on the gunwale and using a massive 'Whig Club' as a punt-pole. A cloak is attached to his shoulders by a tricolour ribbon. He says fiercely: "Better to Reign in Hell! - than Serve in Heaven!" In the bows stands little Lord Henry Petty, one simian foot on the gunwale, playing a dancing-master's fiddle or kit; under his foot is a paper, 'Dance Go to the Devil & shake Yourselves' [see BMSat 10589]. Below Howick is his brother-in-law, Whitbread, singing from a book of 'Wesleys Hyms', a frothing tankard of 'Whitbreads Entire' [cf. 10421] in his left hand.
