"A satire on the peace negotiations and on Windham's Training Act. The scene is outside the 'Treasury', the lower part of its façade forming the background. Ministers and their supporters as 'Corporal and Conscripts' obey the orders of their 'Drill-Serjeant' Napoleon, who stands on the extreme left., his jack-boots firmly planted on cannon-balls him height. He extends his sword with an arrogant gesture, and fiercely orders: "Ground - Arms!" Next him, and in back view, but looking up at him, is Fox seated in an invalid's wheeled chair on the back of which are the coronet and feathers of the Prince of Wales. He is 'Grand Double Drums' and is vigorously beating a pair of kettle-drums, one inscribed 'GR' and crown, the other 'N' and crown. He wears a dressing-gown and bonnet rouge, and his enormously distended legs are straddled outside his drums. On Fox's r. is the 'Flugel Man', Grenville, going through the movement as a pattern to the other privates. He kneels on the left knee and grounds his musket, putting up his hand to shield his eyes; his bayonet is broken, as is its sheath. The 'Corporal & Conscripts' drawn up (r.) facing Napoleon attempt the movement with extreme awkwardness and obsequious haste, not excepting Windham the corporal, the end man (r.) of the front rank. Next him is Lord Holland, on both knees, with an amiable smile. Then Sheridan, very bulky and awkward, but unlike the others directing his musket towards Napoleon. Petty, on both knees, flings down his musket with an obsequious gesture. Next him Lord Temple grovels displaying spherical posteriors. Next, at the end of the line, and close to the gate of the Treasury, kneels Erskine, in wig and gown, raising his hat. In the second rank, behind Windham, is Howick, First Lord, deferentially raising a naval cocked hat; Sidmouth staggers back, throwing up his arms and dropping his musket which lands on his face. Next are Spencer, clumsily lifting his musket, and Ellenborough in wig and gown, with a blunderbuss which he seems about to dash violently on the ground. Behind him is Moira, stiff and tall, in uniform with cocked hat, holding up a musket exploding at lock and barrel. Behind and in shadow are (l. to r.) St. Vincent, Hanger, and the Duke of Clarence, all holding up the muskets which the next rank prevents them from grounding. Most of the 'conscripts' wear civilian dress with crossed bandoleers, and are in most unsoldierly confusion. By the Treasury gate and facing Erskine stands the 'Constable of the Corps', Talleyrand, holding a long constable's staff, crowned, his left. arm extended in a gesture of command; one twisted leg is supported by a stilt under the shoe. As ex-Bishop of Autun (see BMSat 8088) he wears a hat whose crown is a mitre, a long gown and bands over his coat, and a rosary. In his mouth is a pen. "The lion, with the face and wig of Melville, lies gazing up, blood falling on the papers under his paws: 'Plans for Manning tfthe Navy - List of ships built in 1804 ... of ye Line'; 'Abolition of Impress'. He is struck down by the blast from a blunderbuss whose muzzle is a tankard inscribed 'Whitbreads Entire'. This is fired by St. Vincent who crouches (left) behind a withered tree. The blast issues from a circle of froth inscribed 'Report'. Part of it, inscribed 'Condemnation without Trial', passes above the lion and strikes Britannia to the heart. She is leaning against an ancient but flourishing oak on the extreme right. The blast that strikes Melville is inscribed 'Invectives', 'Popular Clamour', 'Envy', 'Disappointed Jacobins', 'Malice'. On the upper part of the withered tree sits a monkey with the head of Wilberforce, holding up an open book: 'Solution of Vital Xianity', but directing at Melville a blast from his posteriors inscribed 'Cant! - Envy! - Abuse! - Hypocrisy! - Cruelty.' Three asses are kicking up their heels at Melville as they scamper off towards the mountainous background. The nearest has the head of Sidmouth, with ass's ears. He is laden with panniers inscribed 'Physick for the Lion.'; these are heaped with medicine-bottles, one labelled 'Emetic for ye Lion'; there are also a 'Clyster for the Lion', and a box of 'opening Pills' (cf. BMSat 9849), The other asses are Hily Addington and Bragge, cf. BMSat 9986. The latter (right) turns his head to say: "Very highly indebted to the Lion, brother Heeley!" His panniers are inscribed 'Provisions for the Doctors Family' and 'Trifles procured thro' the Lions Generosity'; they are piled high with papers: 'Pension to Brother Brag &...'; 'Annuity to all our Cousins'; '£40000 pr Ann'; 'Sinecure'; 'Pension for Aunts'; 'Pension for Brother Hely'; 'Pension'. "A lumbering wagon drawn (l. to r.) by eight asses is stuck fast, up to the axles in water; the asses strain hard to drag it up a steep slope to dry land. Its dilapidated tilt is much patched and is labelled 'British State Waggon 1804'. The wagoner, Addington (r.), kneels on an adjacent bank, and shouts to a fat and jovial John Bull, dressed as a volunteer, who stands on the opposite bank of the deeply sunken lane, his bulldog beside him. Addington wears a smock, but his powdered hair is in a black bag. He holds his long whip and his hat in his right. hand, and extends his left. arm, shouting, " - help, Johnny Bull! - help! - my Waggon's stuck fast in the Slough! - help! help." John, who holds his bayoneted musket, looks down at Addington, pointing behind him with outflung r. arm at thirteen horses with human heads above and behind him on rising ground. He answers: " - stuck fast in the Slough! - ay to be sure! - why dost'nt put better Cattle to thy Wain? - look at them there Horses doing o' nothing at all! - what ether they matches in Colour, if they do but drag the Waggon out o' the Mud! - don't ye see how the very thoughts o' being put into Harness makes 'em all love and nubble one another?" The horses, [The identifications (most being self-evident) are those of Miss Banks, the alternatives in brackets being those of E. Hawkins. Wright and Evans arrange them differently and omit Spencer and Lansdowne.] though close together, are in groups. On the extreme left., and rather behind the others, Lord Spencer (or Carlisle) rubs noses with Carlisle (or Lauderdale), Erskine (in wig and bands) with Wilberforce. In front of this group the bulky Lansdowne (or Norfolk) lies on the ground, asleep, his back to the others. Next, Grey turns his head towards the haughty Buckingham, who wears spectacles and a Garter ribbon. Their backs are turned to the main group of four: Fox, with a foreleg placed on Grenville's shoulder looks up affectionately at the latter, who responds with a complacent smile. Pitt watches the pair with haughty benignity; Canning, behind, watches them intently. On the extreme right. Sheridan (a plump piebald), scowling fiercely, kicks up his heels at Windham, who retorts with a blast of excrement, his head turned towards Fox and Grenville. In the foreground (l.) is the stage-wagon (the slowest form of transit), drawn by its eight undifferentiated asses. The tilt is open at the back, showing it crammed with bundles, &c. The centre-piece is a bulging sack: 'Budget for 1804', from which project papers inscribed 'Taxes'. A treasure-chest is inscribed 'Treasury'; coins pour from a hole in its side. It is flanked by two bundles: 'Secret Service Money' and 'Family Pickings'. A bundle of 'Pensions' consists of bulky papers inscribed 'Sinecure'. "The King and Ministers, as domestic servants in déshabille, surround a rush-light, trying, with fierce intentness, to blow it out. The flame of the light encloses the head of Queen Caroline wearing her feathered hat; the rush is supported on a saveall formed of the head of Wood [Brougham, according to Reid, who is incorrect in some of the other identifications], and placed in a kitchen candlestick standing on a rectangular table. The centre figure is Eldon, his Chancellor's wig formed of a pair of breeches. He leans sideways and the King, wearing a night-cap, looks over his shoulder, blowing downwards. Next them is Wellington, whose blast is better directed than that of the others, but all miss the flame by blowing too low. On the left are two old women, Sidmouth, using his (green) clyster-pipe as a squirt, and Liverpool, whose night-cap is a green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735). Facing these are the Duke of York, next Eldon, and the Duke of Clarence on the extreme left, as a hideous black man, whose strong but ill-directed blast is inscribed 'Slander' [see British Museum Satires No. 14031, &c.]. Three other heads are in shadow, like the King; they watch with anxiety, but are not blowing; they are Castlereagh (left) and two women (right). "George IV (three-quarter length), surrounded by admiring Ministers, holds up a big extinguisher made of paper and inscribed 'Speech from the Throne', which he is about to place over a crowd of tiny Jacobins who surround the Queen and Alderman Wood. All these 'Lilliputians' are on a round table, whose top forms the base of the design except on the right. The terrified Jacobins fall on to papers inscribed 'Libels', 'Address' [twice], 'Sedition'. Alderman Wood steps on the back of one in a frantic effort to escape with the Queen whom he holds in his arms. She is a fat virago, holding up a fire-brand (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13895) inscribed 'Sedition', whose smoke rises into the extinguisher, and a large money-bag, '50 000 per Ann', labelled 'Crumbs of Consolation'. Other Jacobins flee to left and right, escaping the extinguisher, but either falling calamitously from the table, or about to be grasped by the hand of Eldon who sits at the table (left). They have banners and caps of Liberty on poles (or pikes). Among the fugitives is a Don Quixote (left) in armour, wearing Mambrino's helmet, galloping off on horseback, holding a banner. A terrified Jacobin (right) drops a 'Tailors Adress'. Ministers watch the approaching extinction with pleasure: Eldon has a grim smile, Sidmouth and Castlereagh behind him register, one eager delight, the other bland satisfaction. Wellington (right), close behind the King, smiles triumphantly, Liverpool beside him, is in profile, surprised, pleased, and imbecile. The King, three-quarter length, is a cynical Adonis, in military uniform. He is surrounded by Ministers. Sidmouth, holding a doctor's gold-headed cane, feels his pulse, saying: "Dredful sympton's [sic] a raging Pulse." A bottle labelled 'Dolbys Carminative' (as in British Museum Satires No. 13764) projects from his pocket. Liverpool, with pap-boat and spoon, says: "I thought how it would be, that Foriegn Emetick has been too strong for his weak Nerves." Castlereagh, standing between two lawyers, puts a hand on the Babe's forehead, saying: "how hot his poor dear head feels." One lawyer (? Copley) tries to push back a leg within the cot, saying: "If he could but stand on his Legs once more we might have hopes, but I'm afraid he has Caught the Rickets--" The other (? "The King stands waist-deep in a broad-based Green Bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735), holding up his arms, and exclaiming: "A Rat! A Rat! my Kingdom for a Rat!!!" Huge rats climb up the bag and nibble at it, others run towards it, or emerge from holes. Ministers are imprisoned in the bag with the King, and struggle to get out. Near the base (left) emerge the head and arms of Castlereagh; he says: "Knaw away my fine fellows and extricate me." Above him is Sidmouth, crying: "I wish I could find some hole large enough to creep out at." Eldon's head and hands emerge from three holes; he asks: "Was the Pillory ever made for me? will no Rat assist me? let me out to consider of it." Above him is Liverpool, saying: "We shall certainly be all smother'd in this Infernal Bag." The Devil is between Castlereagh and Eldon, shovel in hand; he says: "I can make a hole for myself to creep out at." The King wears coronation robes, his crown rises from his head. The Queen says with a commanding gesture: "That Cap becomes you not alone [sic] Off with the Bauble tread it under foot! ['Taming of the Shrew', V. ii] tis not the time for Pageantry & Waste, while thousands starve for Want? & while your Royal Mistress suffer [sic] Scorn, Reproach & Persecution, from the Dastard Hands of Secret Enemies." "A big cauldron rests on the bent backs of Wellington (left), supporting himself on his sword, Sidmouth, knock-kneed and holding a clyster-pipe, and Castlereagh (right), dandified and bland. From their mouths floats a scroll inscribed: "O is not this a Dainty Dish to set before a King." They are on a much smaller scale than the cooks, who stand one on each side, stirring the brew. One (left) is fashionably dressed, and stalwart, with brown complexion and negroid hair. He holds a green bag inscribed 'Rakings of Italy' and uses a spoon. A winged demon whispers in his ear: "Never mind the dirty work my boy it won't spoil your Complexion." He says: "It wants more seasoning master Cook." The other, pale and emaciated, and wearing barrister's wig and bands, stands on a large dispatch-box in order to reach the pot; this is inscribed 'G.R Milan Commission'. He stirs with a rolled document, and answers: "Indeed Mungo it must be warmer to be relished." Behind him and clutching his shoulder stands a large Devil, who says: "This beats the black Broth of Satan." "The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. Both wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks. Next, Erskine and Ellenborough walk together; Erskine claps to his eye his beloved and discarded Chancellor's wig. At the end of the procession and on the extreme left. are Lauderdale and Moira wearing his cocked hat with a mourning scarf and cloak. All weep, registering deep distress. "Stoddart sits in the centre of the design blowing through a trumpet a blast of abuse towards the newly-arrived Queen (left) while holding out copies of his newspaper towards four ragged little newsboys (right), who also blow their horns with great vigour. Queen Caroline, tall, dignified, and demurely dressed in black, flinches from Stoddart's blast, and is protected by Britannia and Alderman Wood. She says: "Surely thos Fellows will not be suffered to Insult me in this manner? who is it that Sets them on? who encourages them." Britannia, seated on a very angry Lion, extends her arms, saying: "Welcome Beloved of thy People, the Mother of Englands lost -- & ever to be lamented Hope, will ever be dear to the Hearts of every true born Englishman." Wood, wearing an Alderman's gown, tries to protect her with a shield inscribed: 'No more Douglas's an Englishman's Rights, Justice & Truth'. "An intricate design with small inset scenes, the background being walls of a room covered with free copies of caricatures against George IV, chiefly relating to the Queen. On the extreme left is an open door, showing Napoleon as a tiny colossus on the summit of St. Helena (see British Museum Satires No. 12611, &c.), a steep rock. In the centre George IV, his forehead inscribed '0', stands in deep dejection, looking down; he has ass's ears, and from his fob, in place of seals, hang bottle, corkscrew (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13299), pie, &c. Loops of rope hang from his pockets. He stands on thorn-branches, as do his Ministers and brother-sovereigns, orientals excepted. No. '1' (a small scene in the background). Six Ministers dance round Britannia who is chained to the ground: Castlereagh, Sidmouth, Liverpool, Bathurst, Melville, and Wellington (names from initials); they say: "We have put him in a pretty Situation." Answer: "Laugh & Rejoice I have New Years Gifts for you in my Pockets." (He threatens them with dismissal for their failure to obtain his divorce.)The next are '2, K--g of Pru--a', a very tall officer wearing a mortar-board cap (see British Museum Satires No. 12283) who points derisively at George IV, saying: "Stupid Ass he is right enough to be ashamed of himself"; '3. Em--r of R--a', adapted from British Museum Satires No. 13010, and laughing as in that plate, but wearing a barber's bowl (Mambrino's helmet) inscribed 'New Don' [Quixote]; he says: "It is enough to set one mad"; '4. Em--r of A--a', thin and shrivelled, with his grandson, '18, Napoleon 2', a tiny figure in his pocket who says: "I wish I could move this bowl"; Francis says: "What a face." George IV's answer to the three sovereigns is "Go to School before you laugh at me Small Heads upon Tall Bodies had it not been for me you would have been on the Parish, a long time ago [an allusion to British subsidies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 12875]. Come Come you are as black as myself or our Infernal Brother." He answers 'Napoleon 2': "Be comforted, in a little time you will roll it." '5' and '6', seated together cross-legged in the foreground, are 'Great T--k' and 'Em--r of P--a', who say "Turn Turk then since thy wife no longer pleases thee" and "Prends garde qu'on ne te mette en perce." The King answers them: "For a long time I have had a great mind to do it" and "That is what I Dread." Nos. '7' to '12' are sovereigns standing in a row behind '2' and' 3'. '7 The K--g of S--n' says: "For this long year I pity but cannot help laughing in seeing you"; answer: "We shall see who will laugh the last" (Ferdinand VII since early in 1820 was in the power of revolutionaries); '6. K--g of Na--s', his head a block of 'Naples Soap', says: "My brother in misfortune speeks [sic] the truth." (There was revolution in the Two Sicilies, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14132.) Answer: "Nay all the little Dogs will Bark look at this Cake ['cake' (slang) = fool, gull, or blockhead, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10750] of Naples soap you would do better to eat your Macaroni and come and Drink with me to comfort us." '9. K--g of B--a', "It would have been better to have said nothing"; answer: "I confess it would have been better." '10. K--g of W--g'. "Clamour in such cases is wore [sic] than silence"; answer: "Experience has taught it me." '11. K--g of S--x--y.' "I in your case would have taken my wife and lived politically with her"; answer: "It would have been the most advisable Plan." '12. K--g of N--ds.' "Gratitude compels me to pity you" [see British Museum Satires No. 12102, &c.]; answer: "Think rather to preserve the Administration of thy Cheeses" [a remark borne out by the Belgian revolution of 1830]. Even bulkier than George IV is '14. L--s. tout de Suite [XVIII]', who sits on thorns, and has cloven hooves for feet and hands, animal's ears, and a small black cap or tonsure; from his shoulders hangs a long rosary with a dangling cross. Looking up at George IV with a cynical smile he says: "Poor fool"; answer: "At last comes the Kick of the Ass, But I have a Dish ready forhim." Behind Louis is '13. Em--r of Ch--na', saying: "You look a thousand times more like a Chinese than myself in your B--s pavillion"; answer: "Thou art the only one I could not deceive." Standing in the doorway are three well-dressed young men who are 'People', they are 15-17, and look at the King with smiling contempt; the third points to Napoleon. '15.' "You are the laughing stock of your faithful brothers who are no better than yourself"; answer: "It is true when too late I have open'd my eyes, but look at my pockets and you will find Ropes for my M--n--st--rs and my Brothers." '16' "We have found you out at length in spite of your mask do us justice or we shall give you your deserts Whitehall is not gone and there is room for you all" [an allusion to Charles I's fate, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13269]; answer: "Do it yourselves, it will be the shortest way." '17.' "Boney Boney you alone deserve our tears your fall has been as fatal to them as to ourselves your return would save us all." Answer: "He is a Man I must allow it." (For 18 see under 4.) '19' is "Green Bag [see British Museum Satires No. 13735], inscribed Milan Commission [see British Museum Satires No. 13755]; it says: / am cruelly thrown aside and fallen into very bad hands" [see British Museum Satires No. 13986]; answer: "However all my hopes are in the [sic]." Prints (uncoloured), or ad hoc designs, completely cover the walls; only a few can be identified. The lunette under the domed ceiling contains apotheoses of Queen Caroline; these are flanked by designs, both on the vaulted ceiling, depicting the joy of John Bull (left) and Britannia (right) on her return to England, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13743. Below, on the three walls, are thirty-one prints copied or adapted regardless of the size of the originals. The two largest, in the upper left corner, are from British Museum Satires No. 13843 (simplified and perhaps combined with British Museum Satires No. 13764) and British Museum Satires No. 13786. Others are British Museum Satires No. 13210, reversed and simplified; British Museum Satires No. 13998, reversed and altered, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires No. 13830, simplified, or a similar plate; British Museum Satires Nos. 13851, 13901, 14012; the King from British Museum Satires No. 13848 (throwing mud, the Queen not depicted, the right of the plate hidden by George IV). British Museum Satires No. 13508, a small woodcut, appears as a full-sized print; British Museum Satires No. 14029 is simplified and the domes of the Pavilion are introduced. The origins of twenty others have not been traced. On the floor behind Louis XVIII (left) are partly rolled caricatures, and on the right is a print (coloured) of Castlereagh standing behind a huge pie from which he carves portions for four supplicants, evidently the King of Prussia, the Tsar, the Emperor of Austria, and (?) Bernadotte (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13619). As a pendant to this is a battle scene: the statue of Napoleon presides over an empty throne; beside it stands a woman who offers crown and sceptre to a little boy (his son) who runs to take it, holding the hand of a Grenadier, beside whom is another soldier (cf. "The three witches of Macbeth, hooded and cloaked, each holding a broom, are Liverpool (left), Sidmouth and Castlereagh (right). They surround a huge cauldron inscribed 'Cast--gh & C° Brass Manufacturers Fecit.', each adding something to the flames which tower up from it, surrounded by heavy smoke. A winged Devil at the apex of the design empties into the cauldron the contents of an 'Infernal Green Bag'; from it fall a dagger, a leech, tiny figures, manacles, a razor, an antlered animal's head, many legal papers docketed 'Lies'. Others are contributed by the witches; papers inscribed: 'Divorce', 'Reports', 'Leach', and 'Cooke'. There are also flames under the pot, which, are tended by two naked demons, one with the head of Canning who uses bellows inscribed 'Mother Hunn' [see British Museum Satires No. 13617]; the other with the head of Wellington, who uses a red-hot 'Waterloo Poker'. The Canning-demon sits on the back of a naked female demon (? his mother) who is blowing the flames. On the extreme left and right, each attended by a 'Blue Devil' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14598), stand George IV and the Duke of York. The King, his arms raised, exclaims: "Tell me ye d--n'd infernal Hags of Night, shall Fr--k reign?" [i.e. shall he get a divorce, remarry, and block his brother's succession, see No. 13789]. He stretches across the crown and sceptre which are on the ground. His Blue Devil, touching the George which is suspended from his neck, and his gartered leg ('Honi So[it]'), says: "All hail Macbeth! thou'rt now the cause of Laughter." The Duke of York, in uniform and holding a naked sword inscribed 'the Army', says: "I'll do!--I'll do!--I'll do!--" His attendant Blue Devil: "All hail Macduff!! that shall be K--g hereafter--." The witches chant their parodies. Liverpool: "In the Cauldron first we'll mingle, What shall make great Macbeth single; Oath of an Italian Slave-- Earth of Snuffy [Queen Charlotte] from the grave-- Blood of Radicals--and last In let the Divorce be cast, Hubble, bubble,Toil and trouble, Fire blase and Cauldron bubble!!--" Castlereagh: "Put in C--ke of Lincolns Inn, All that's evil, all that's sin, L--ch's honor--and Britain's shame, Put them in, and fan the flame, Now the broth is good and strong, Macbeth shall again be young." Sidmouth: "Cats, that draw the Soldiers blood, Chains, that bind the brave and good, Tongue of slander, Eye of hate, Mix--and now our charm's complete." "The beam of a pair of scales is suspended from a vertical bar terminating in a ring which encircles one of many solid rays from a large sun (l.) surmounted by the Prince of Wales' coronet and feathers. The 'Rising-Sun' (see BMSat 10258) is partly obscured by dark clouds, but its rays extend across the design and illuminate especially Sidmouth and Ellenborough. The former is poised triumphantly on the cross-beam, depressing the r. scale with his foot, while he holds on his shoulders Ellenborough in judge's wig and gown, who manipulates the scale in the same direction. This lower scale contains the 'Broad-Bottomites' ie the Grenvillites, or New Opposition, the other, the 'No-Bottomites', i.e. the Foxites, or Old Opposition. In the latter (l.) the occupants hold the ropes with expressions of anxiety; the inscription suggests that they lack 'bottom' or endurance (a pugilistic phrase). Fox is the most prominent, between Erskine (l.), in Chancellor's wig and gown and with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Grey (r.). Moira, in cocked hat and regimentals, stands stiffly behind. Fox and Grey have bonnets rouges but do not wear them. The other bowl contains Grenville, one hand on his fat nephew Lord Temple; the heavy posteriors for which the family were noted take up much of the bowl. Windham waves his hat triumphantly. Of two other partly obscured occupants one resembles Lord Henry Petty. The scales are suspended above the curve of the globe on which Great Britain and the Continent are indicated. Behind the North Pole (r.) is a setting sun containing a royal crown; its feeble rays are outshone by the heavy beams of the rising sun (or son).
