Abstract:
"Plate to the 'Scourge', iv, before p. 349. An illustration to 'Elections in the Isle of Borneo', pp. 349-55, relating a dream in which the Prince chooses his Ministers and Household officers according to their proficiency in adultery. A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 11899. The Regent is enthroned under a canopy in the centre of a long platform backed by the pillars of Carlton House. Below is the cobbled street, with passers-by and spectators whose heads are just below the platform, so that the figures are arranged in two tiers. The Regent's throne is on a triple dais; he puts one arm round the waist of Lady Hertford who sits on his knee, holding at arms' length a brimming goblet. She puts her right arm round his neck, and also supports herself by placing a finger on the branching antlers of her husband, who stands in his chamberlain's robes, and holding his wand of office, beside the dais, at which he points with a complacent grin. He says: "My gracious Master is personelly acquainted with my merits, they live in his bosom, & he will reward me, according to my Deserts." Lady Hertford wears a spiky crown, and her vast spherical breasts are divided by a jewel in the form of the Prince's feathers with his motto 'Ich Dien.' The drapery over the throne is centred by the crowned skull of a stag, with wide antlers; in its nostrils is a ring from which a birch-rod hangs above the Prince's head. A grinning demon, standing on the antlers, straddles across the crown, holding up the drapery. On the left of the throne the Duke of York, in uniform with cavalry boots, his hand on his sword, stands swaggeringly. A woman clutches his arm and whispers in his ear; beside them is a basket containing three infants and inscribed 'Mother Careys Chickin' [see British Museum Satires No. 11050]. He says: "I was turned out of the Office I now solicit because I was too fond of a married Woman [Mrs. Clarke, see British Museum Satires No. 11216, &c.] & could not live without commiting Adultery I claim therefore to be once more elevated to the Office of Commander in Cheif." Behind Lord Hertford (and a pendant to Mrs. Carey) stands an elderly posturing peer, wearing a star, his hands deprecatingly extended. He says: "As for business I never had a Headfor't but I have laid the Country under a Massy load of Obligations in other respects Adultery is my Motto so give me ******ship of the H-." Next (right) is a group of three: the Duke of Cumberland in outlandish Death's Head Hussar uniform holding a sabre with a notched blade and seemingly dripping blood, though not so coloured. He stands between two young women; one, holding his arm, brandishes a razor over her head, the other holds a paper called 'Nugent'. The Duke says: "Considering my Exploits you cannot do less than make me a Field Marshal." On the extreme right is the Duke of Clarence in admiral's uniform with trousers, pointing to a broken chamber-pot ('Jordan') decorated with a crown and containing seven children, two in uniform. Mrs. Jordan takes him affectionately by the arm. He points downwards, saying, "I have lived in Adultery with an actress 25 years & have a pretty Number of illegetimate Children. I hope you will make me an Admiral of the Fleets." On the extreme left McMahon, dwarfish and ugly, stoops over the edge of the platform, pouring coins from a bag marked 'P P' [reversed letters], for Privy Purse (or Pimp), into the apron of a hideous bawd who grins up at him. He says: "Let her be forty at least, plump & Sprightly." Next stands Lord Yarmouth, wearing a star, his hands in his pockets, scowling at a young woman who puts her hands on his shoulders; he says: "Confound my Wishers if Venus alias Fanny Anny [Fagniani] may not go to Juno----I'm Vice all over. Let me con tinue so." Next is a tall man wearing a long driving-coat with a star and a small rakish top-hat (? Lord Melbourne); one leg terminates in a cloven hoof. He stands between two disreputable women of the lowest St. Giles type, ragged and hideous, an arm across the shoulders of each; both offer him drink, one takes him by the chin. A third and younger woman sits on the ground at his feet, drinking from a bottle. He says: "As for me my Name is sufficient, I am known as the Paragon of Debauchery and I only claim to be the-s [Regent's] Confidential Friend." On the ground (left to right) are the bawd receiving money from McMahon, a ragged dustman with the curved shin-bones then known as 'cheese-cutters', a result of rickets; George Hanger, with his bludgeon under his arm (cf. British Museum Satires No. 8889, &c.), saying, "Hang her She's quite Drunk"; Augustus Barry, grotesquely thin and very rakish, with long coat, standing with widely splayed-out feet. These three stare up at the throne, Barry looking through an eye-glass. A ragged, sub-human creature picks Barry's pocket, taking a paper: 'A Sermon to be Preached at Cripple gate by Revd Honble A Newgate'. A blind beggar (? a sailor) walks with a stick, and a dog on a string, holding out his tattered hat. A Quaker-like figure stares up at the platform where the legs of the seated prostitute hang over its edge, as does a beggar boy with badly twisted legs. Next, a fashionably dressed man and woman shake hands, bending to stare into each other's face. He takes her left hand. His dress resembles that of the dandy of a few years later: shock of hair, exaggerated neck-cloth, hussar-pattern trousers, and long tail-coat. The centre figure in this lower row is John Bull looking up angrily over his shoulder at the prostitute, and pushing away to the right three young girls; he says to them: "Get away get away, if you go near the Platform you'll be ruined." His bull-dog looks pugnaciously up at the platform. A tall emaciated cavalry soldier speaks to a woman in a poke-bonnet, while a little ragged boy clasps the long horse-tail which hangs from his helmet. On the extreme right is Sheridan in (ragged) Harlequin's dress (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9916), moribund or drunk, supported between two top-booted bailiffs; one holds a writ and says "Poor fellow his Magic wand is broken." On the ground lies his wooden sword in two pieces, one inscribed 'M', the other 'P'; at his feet is a paper: 'Princely Promises'."--British Museum online catalogue

"George IV sits on a sofa holding the plump and pretty 'Mrs Q' (see British Museum Satires No. 13889) on his knee; they kiss each other. Objects of burlesqued chinoiserie surround them. Above his head, in a frame decorated with dragons, pagodas, and mandarins, is a view of the Pavilion: 'The Palace of Fum'. [See Moore's 'Morning Chronicle' verses 'Fum and Hum, the two birds of Royalty', reprinted 'Fudge Family', 1818.] An obese mandarin wearing a hat topped with antlers, and with half a crown (see British Museum Satires No. 13826) depicted on his paunch, is 'The great Fum', i.e. the King. This figure rests on the head of an obese dragon. Another figure of a squatting mandarin is on the floor."--British Museum online catalogue

"A fashionably dressed man rides a stag with the head and bust of a pretty young woman with dark ringlets and roses in her hair. A lean German runs after him, holding out a pair of large antlers, saying, O, ho! my-lor, here de Horn my-lor--she friget [sic] de horn, take dem, A, ha! par-blue, by Gar I vil have de damage. The rider, turning his head in profile, and warding off the gift, answers: No. No. Baron, you may keep them yourself, and welcome, the horns become you; my dear can do without them. The German wears flat fur cap with peak, tight fur-bordered coat. The other wears bell-shaped top-hat, blue frogged coat, and white trousers. His rein is a scarf inscribed £2,500 round his mount's chest. The animal, its hind-legs splashing the German with mud, reaches a high wall fringed with spikes, inscribed Bancus Regis, resembling that of the King's Bench prison, but here indicating the Court of King's Bench. On it, below a large inscription: Hunts Matchless Blacking [see British Museum Satires No. 15150] are many bills: [1] Coy of Sussex stolen or strayed a handsome Doe of the Roebuck breed, with black hair and scut, is supposed to be stolen by some poacher. Her owner a poor foreigner says her value is £10.000--. [2] Just Published--Crim Cram. [3] The Prodigal a New farce. [4] --Theatre, Chip of the Old Block or the Amours of one of the Peers. [5] Richmond Steam Boat the Venus with excellent accomodation & a high Poop:-- 16 Horse power. [6] Astley's, The Dejected Baron after which Mr Ducrow will manage His Celebrated Horse Pegassus. [7] Try Dr Eady [a notorious quack]. [8] Sermons By the Revd Mr Irvine. "A stuffed figure of George IV, heavy, inert, and puppet-like, wearing royal robes and with massive antlers on his forehead, is supported by his three chief Ministers. Under his legs are two prostrate men; his left foot is planted on the face of one who wears the remains of a tattered shoe. Sidmouth takes his right leg and holds it out towards the Queen, who escapes to the left. She is protected by John Bull, a stout countryman, who smashes the King's extended leg with a cudgel of 'oak', breaking off the foot. John, with clenched fist, says: "Dom thee, what Kick a defenceless Woman 'the Cowardly Rascal!" Castlereagh and Liverpool (right) support the King's shoulders. Behind (right) is a copy of British Museum Satires No. 13765: the King sleeps in a cradle (as in British Museum Satire No. 13764, &c.) rocked by Lady Conyngham, who sings: "hush my babe lie still & slumber 'tis Eliza guards thy Bed." The cradle is decorated with a pagoda, the Royal Arms, and a nude obese squatting Chinese, symbolizing the King. The Queen, looking behind her vengefully, escapes towards a Chinese doorway. "A fashionably dressed man, walking in (?) Hyde Park, draws back in astonishment on meeting Lord Conyngham, riding a spirited horse and wearing a marquess's coronet, surmounted by antlers with bells. The former says: "Why my Lord I never saw you so Gracefully set off in my Life before, where the Devil did you get that beautiful Charger." Conyngham: "It was a present from the - to my Wife & a rare Stallion it is, he has also presented my Daughter with a similar Poney." Answer: "Indeed!!! "In the foreground John Bull, a drink-blotched 'cit', and George IV tug at a large pair of antlers. The King (right): "I tell you Bull I will wear them--I know they will become me--what am I allways to be disappointed." John wears a large white favour in his hat inscribed 'The Queen'; he says: "I'll be D--n'd if you do wear them yet, however much you may deserve them so it is useless contending G--e." At his feet is a large bludgeon: 'John Bull's Oke'. Behind them, a woman, apparently Mrs. Bull, strikes Majocchi, so that his nose gushes blood, saying: "You're one of the Villians from Cotton Garden" [see British Museum Satires No. 13824, &c.]. He falls backwards, saying: "Non mi Ricordo" [see British Museum Satires No. 13827]. In the middle distance behind John (left), stands a woman arm-in-arm with a sailor, who is next a soldier; she waves her handkerchief, saying; "The Queen for ever"; the other two wave their hats, shouting: "Go it John we'll stand by You." Abstract:
"An adaptation of British Museum Satires No. 11904 (1812), by Cruikshank, reversed, with Lady Conyngham replacing Lady Hertford. The open barouche, with four galloping horses and the Cupid postilion, is closely copied. Behind the carriage, as footman, General Bloomfield replaces McMahon. Conyngham replaces Hertford on the donkey, with the antlers, dress, and (incorrectly) the staff of office of his predecessor. He says: "How fortunate am I to have a Handsome and Cunning wife or I should not wear those marks of Distinction!" Lady Conyngham repeats Lady Hertford's words: "We have had a glorious ride my Love! It is worth Half a Crown" [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13826]. George IV: "My Cunning-one I have not Half a Crown to give thee, Would that I had." The Devil drives, as before, but sits alone, instead of beside Lord Yarmouth; a long barbed tail has been added. The 'Female Asylum' (for discarded mistresses) is similarly drawn but less ramshackle; the women looking from the windows are altered; Lady Hertford replaces Mrs. Fitzherbert: the words are as before, but '. . . his Poor F' becomes 'his Poor H'. On the roof, in place of two cats as supporters of the inverted feathers and coronet, are three cats with a (heraldic) scroll and a chamber-pot. The tail of the procession (Sheridan and the wagon 'For Yarmouth . . .') is omitted. "George IV, dressed as a monk, stoops over Lady Conyngham (right), placing a hand on her breast. He is clean-shaven, his whiskers, inscribed 'Transferred Whiskers', form a border to a bald head, giving the effect of a tonsure. She is décolletée, dressed in white, with white drapery from her head, suggesting a travesty of a nun (cf. British Museum Satires No. 5177). He says: "Speak freely thou Cunning-one, and by St George, I will give thee Absolution--(let me see) a Faux-Pas, is no deadly sin, and loving other men, it is our duty to love each other." She says: "Since my Conversion (Holy Father) I feel much lighter you have put a new conscience into me." They are large half length figures, hiding much of the background. Behind the King (left) on a table are wine-bottle of 'Holy Water', goblet, open book, and crucifix. Above this is a picture of asses at table, drinking wine: 'Feast of Asses in honour of Balaam's a[ss]'. Behind Lady Conyngham (right) is a picture of a monk birching the bare back of her husband, who kneels, holding up a cross; on his forehead are large antlers: 'St Francis Doing Penance', placarded 'NB The origin of this Picture may be seen at Hamilton Place' [see British Museum Satires No. 13848]."--British Museum online catalogue
