Abstract:
The papers consist of material created and compiled by Caryl Liddell Hargreaves that is related to Alice Liddell Hargreaves' life and various events surrounding the 1932 centenary celebrations of the author Lewis Carroll (1832-1898). Much of the collection documents the visit Alice Hargreaves and her son Caryl made to New York in the spring of 1932, so that she could receive an honorary degree from Columbia University and attend various Carroll centenary events. Box 1 holds a manuscript diary by Caryl Hargreaves covering his mother's trip to America, and three folders of manuscript and printed writings by him about her; photographs of Alice Hargreaves; her passport, ephemera and printed memorabilia from Columbia University; and two small scrapbooks with press cuttings about Alice Hargreaves and Lewis Carroll. One of the scrapbooks was created by Maud Standen Ffooks, a personal friend of Charles Dodgson, and given to Caryl Hargreaves.

Abstract:
Autograph manuscript notebook documenting Arnold's tour of France, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland from March through August of 1859. Arnold traveled as Foreign Assistant Commissioner to the Newcastle Commission on Elementary Education, and many of the entries record official meetings connected with the commission's business, as well as Arnold's own observations on Continental educational systems, particularly those of France. In addition, Arnold notes his meetings with French authors and critics, including Sainte-Beuve, Villemain, Guizot, Mérimée, and Montalembert. Later entries consist almost entirely of quotations from Arnold's reading, particularly of French authors.

Other items in the collection include one autograph letter, signed, from Percy Bysshe Shelley to "S. Turner" (February 26, 1816) concerning Shelley's grandfather's estate, two autograph orders, signed, to Messrs. Brookes & Co., London, to pay Charles Clairmont (April 9, 1815) and "Mr. Sutton" (February 21, 1818), and an engraved bank check, signed by Shelley and payable to himself (February 16, 1818). Also present is one autograph letter, signed, from Percy Florence Shelley to Edith Nicolls Clark (October 4, 1873) regarding the papers of Percy Bysshe Shelley. and The collection consists of letters and documents regarding Percy Bysshe Shelley that primarily relate to Shelley's finances. The bulk of the collection is held in one bound volume containing fifteen autograph letters, signed, by Shelley's father Timothy Shelley in 1811: one to his son Percy Bysshe Shelley, one to his brother-in-law Captain John Pilfold, and thirteen to London solicitor William Whitton; at the front of the volume are two legal documents signed by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Timothy Shelley, William Whitton, and solicitor P. W. Longdill in 1815. The material concerns Percy Bysshe Shelley's expulsion from the University of Oxford, his debts, and his financial arrangements with his father.
