Abstract:
"A satire on prostitution set in a brothel in which all the men have been given the heads of apes and the women those of cats. In the centre of the room a prostitute sits on the knee of an old man who fondles her, her legs splayed; she holds a glass in one hand and a flask in the other. A magistrate wearing a lace edged hat and holding a large candle stands over them. Constables with staves stand in the open door, behind which the prostitute's pimp (referred to as her bully in the verse beneath) is hiding; he is dressed as a grenadier. On the right, the brothel-keeper holds up a tally-board pointing out one of the symbols to three men who are startled at the entry of the constables; one is seated at a table holding a glass, another holds a large candle. On the table is a large flask, another rests on the floor beside a big jug, and another lies broken in pieces. In the background on the right a couple peer from being the curtains of a large bed. "The interior of a coffee-house, the customers, with one exception, deeply interested and dismayed at the news in a 'Gazette Extraordinary', which the title shows is that on the capture of the island of St. Eustatius by Rodney, see British Museum Satires Nos. 5827, 5837, &c, the 'Extraordinary Gazette' being that of 13 Feb. 1781. On each side of the room is an oblong table flanked by wooden settles. Between the tables and in the centre of the design three men stand, one of whom reads from a 'Gazette Extraordinary'. His two companions look at him with scowling attention; one, his hat under his arm, has both hands thrust deep into the pockets of his coat; the other holds his forehead, from which his wig has been pushed back. A dog gazes up at them. At the table on the left a man sits in full face gaping with dismay, his hands rest on the table grasping his knife and fork. Two men sit on opposite sides of the table on the right; one holds a glass in his left hand, while he looks up at the group with the newspaper. His vis-à-vis has turned sideways, his hands on his knees, with an expression of melancholy alarm. Behind him, one hand on the back of the settle, stands John Wilkes, conspicuous by his squint and his characteristic wig; he holds a glass of wine and frowns. At his side is a man leaning back asleep. A cockatoo's cage is hung from the roof, the bird head downwards, as if about to screech. An etching in outline representing the interior of a room, with a door on the left, a circular table on the right. On the table is a dish on which sits a boar's head; a scroll on the table to the left reads "Reprieve for murder." A crutch is propped up against the back of the table. From the ceiling above the middle of the room hangs a birdcage with a yellow bird inside. Under the birdcage sits the singer Miss Anne Ford a guitar in hand; Anne was the daughter of Thomas Ford Clerk of Arraigns, an Old Bailey lawyer. She sings "si tutti de olberi". William, the third Earl of Jersay kneels at her feet and with joined hands says, "Believe my sighs my vows my dear &c" A second crutch lies on the ground beside him; he is much older and suffers from gout. A haggard old woman carelessly mixing a recipe for corns on the fire in her sordid bedroom. As well as being cluttered with potions, the room contains an assortment of squabbling pets; on the wall hangs a painting depicting the attempted seduction of Susanna by the elders. The lettering below image, a recipe in verse, begins: "Take tacamahacca, an ounce & a half, a pound of good suet, from the skin of a calf, 3 barbicued apples, a ha'p'orth of pears, 3 dragon flies pounded, the ear wax of bears, a small peice of cheese, a little gum copal, some putrified salt with some essence of opal ..."

"A crowded interior. An old maid, grotesquely lean, spectacled, and hideous, sits in an arm-chair beside her fire (left) on which a concoction in a saucepan boils over, surrounded by fierce flames. This she stirs with a spoon but turns to the right to pore over the recipe, which is in her left hand. One bare foot with deformed toes rests on a stool beside which are a spike-toed high-heeled shoe and a stocking. A table beside her and the floor below it are crowded with bottles, jars, and medicaments, with a pestle and mortar and a lighted candle. The candle sets fire to her cap, and the flame reaches a little bird-cage hanging from the ceiling. A cat walks under her petticoats; a tiny lap-dog lies in a cushioned band-box lid at her feet. A second cat claws towards a mouse which runs up the pole of a perch on which stands, a draggled and angry cockatoo. A pug-dog also looks up at the bird. Against the wall is a stuffed cat in a glass case; above it is a burlesque picture of Susanna and the Elders. A neat curtained bed is on the right. The chimney-piece is decorated with Diana (burlesqued) urging on the hounds to seize Actæon. On it are three peacock's feathers, bottles, spills, a shell, a Chinese mandarin, &c. In a paneled room hung with mirrors and a clock, the master of the house, in dressing gown and nightcap, puts his hand on the bosom of a maid who serves him biscuits. Next to him a clergyman looks adoringly at the lady of the house on his left. In his hand is an open volume with text "A sermon, I am sick of love." She is dressed in a wrap and cap and, while smiling at the clergyman, surreptitiously takes a letter from a black servant boy who approaches from behind her chair. A parrot in a cage hanging above them sings, "Caesar and Pompey were both of them horned." A squirrel sits on a stool next to the table. In the foreground, a monkey sits on the floor, reading "A dissertation on winding up the clock, by Tristam Shandy." An equestrian print with a portrait of the Duke of Cumberland on horseback hangs above the mantlepiece, and a bird in a cage hangs over the cobbler.
