Abstract:: "In a plainly furnished room a whole family suffers. An elderly 'cit' and a skinny old woman register acute discomfort. Between their chairs is a round table on which is a dish of cherries and currants. A stout maidservant (left) drinks from a bottle she has taken from a store-cupboard. A little boy, a cat, and a dog are afflicted. A door opens into a bedroom (right) where a little girl relieves herself; another tries to kick her from her seat. On the wall are three shelves of books, among them 'Family Bible' and 'Family Phisician'. A magpie is in a wicker cage."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "A satire on prostitution set in a brothel in which all the men have been given the heads of apes and the women those of cats. In the centre of the room a prostitute sits on the knee of an old man who fondles her, her legs splayed; she holds a glass in one hand and a flask in the other. A magistrate wearing a lace edged hat and holding a large candle stands over them. Constables with staves stand in the open door, behind which the prostitute's pimp (referred to as her bully in the verse beneath) is hiding; he is dressed as a grenadier. On the right, the brothel-keeper holds up a tally-board pointing out one of the symbols to three men who are startled at the entry of the constables; one is seated at a table holding a glass, another holds a large candle. On the table is a large flask, another rests on the floor beside a big jug, and another lies broken in pieces. In the background on the right a couple peer from being the curtains of a large bed. Abstract:: "An untidy shock-headed footman stands letting a tureen slide on to the table so that its contents pour out; in his Ieft hand is a dish containing a leg of mutton, held so that joint and gravy fall to the floor. He stands between a hideous old woman at the head of the table (right) and a comely young one on her right. A fat maidservant follows the footman, holding a dish. Behind the man hangs an elaborately framed bust portrait of a grim-looking man wearing an early eighteenth-century wig. A cockatoo screams from a cage (left). A dog sits behind the old woman's chair, a cat puts its fore-paws on the table to lap the spilt soup. Below the title: 'Take off the largest dishes, and set them on with one hand, to shew the ladies your vigour and strength of back, but always do it between two ladies, that if the dish happens to slip, the soup or sauce may fall on their cloaths, and not daub the floor, by this practice, two of our brethren, my worthy friends, got considerable fortunes. . . . When you carry up a dish of meat, dip your fingers in the sauce, or lick it with your tongue, to try whether it be good, and fit for your masters table - .'
